RUNNING COMMENTARY Well, here it is-- my last commentary of 2018. Have you got chills? I have chills… And the theme from Doogie Howser ear-worming around my noggin.

With the holidays, we’ve been consistently putting together two issues in the time usually reserved for one. And by “we” (channeling Gary Oldman in The Professional), I mean EVERYONE! Tiny staff at the 11th Hour and The Creek. Everyone does multiple jobs. S--t, sometimes I get home, and my daughter’s taller than when I left. This issue was supposed to be a simple retrospective. Reprint some interviews, maybe some Required Listenings, fill it up with some “Best of ’s”. It was gonna be easy, laid-back, time for Christmas vacation, hot chocolate, rum, and jolly ‘ole elves. But when I actually sat down to do all those things, I was struck with the fact that it wasn’t entertaining. Not for me. And if I’m not diggin’ it, how could I expect you to?

This has been a 1000-car-Blues-Brothers-finale-pile-up of a year, and I’ll be damned if I’m gonna leave this crappy 365 with a “look back” issue! What you’ve got in your hot little hands is, in my not-so-humble opinion, one of our best yet. By deciding to not “phone it in”, I was able to talk to one of my rock n’ roll heroes (who also did not half-ass it). I was also able to print an interview that you should’ve had the opportunity to read last summer! Top 5’s are a personal passion o’ mine and have we got ‘em? Abso-friggin’-lutely! If I could buy the world a Coke, I’d start with everyone that’s kept this magazine alive for 401 issues. But I can’t-- so I hope you’ll accept this particular issue and my fondest wishes. None of us know what’s going to happen in 2019, but I hope you get to read about it in the 11th Hour.

Finally, I’d like to thank the people who’ve helped make this position and publication my dream job. Los Jefes: Tony Doolin, Rob Evans, Wes Griffith-- thanks, boys, for not tossin’ me out on my butt just yet. Where do you start with Drivin N Cryin? How about with right now? Coming up on 34 years, the Georgia Music Hall of Famers are set to release a new album in 2019 that should only add to the phenomenal catalog of work receiving fresh vinyl presses. I caught bassist and founding DnC member Tim Nielson on the road to a gig, but he was cool enough to answer 11 Questions-- and fuel my anticipation of the show here in Macon on December 29th at the Hargray Capitol Theatre. Drivin N Cryin and Homemade Sin? Meet ya there, kids.

Q: It's been awesome having Drivin N Cryin albums back on vinyl. This past summer, New West Records put out Too Late To Turn Back. Originally, y'all release that in 1997, and it's got some Byrds-esque guitars on it, some savage '70s rhythms-but it also, I think, features some of your best songs that have more than a dash of 21st Century pop punk. Do you think that album was ahead of its time?

interviews done and... the direction he went with it, I was fine with it because I thought it was going to be entertaining and something that was gonna draw in the viewers to not change the channel and keep watching. So it was cool.

Q: Kevin [Kinney] does a solo thing from time to time. What other projects are you involved in?

A: I guess so. I mean, I think in a lot of ways, Drivin N Cryin playing different kinds of music from the get-go was kind of ahead of its time... Even though, you know, the Rolling Stones and Led Zeppelin had acoustic guitars and mandolins on their records-and Zeppelin was considered heavy metal.

But then you got groups like Jason Isbell doin' singer-songwriter stuff mixed with rock n' roll... but yeah, kinda! We're all punk rockers... and it's just where we were at after our stint with major labels and making a record as a three-piece. That's where we were at in 1996, '97.

A: Well, I’m not really involved in any projects, per se, right now. I do some stuff with Mark Bryan (Hootie and the Blowfish) every now and then for charity. We have a house band, and we bring in a bunch of stars to come and sing songs, we do golf tournaments and whatever... But I'm managing the band full time now when I'm not playing in the band-and Drivin N Cryin has been a full-time deal for the last couple of years for sure. So Kevin's not doing very much solo stuff at all. Right now that's where I'm at, managing the band-and we just finished recording a new album.

It's going to be coming out in the spring. I'm very excited about that.

Q: Yeah! Let's talk about that. Who's on there, and what can we expect out of this brand new record?

Q: Wow, I did not know that Tasjan was actually producing! Over the years you've had so many great musicians stop in, have a cup of coffee, do a tour, record with the band. So what do you think draws guys like Aaron Lee Tasjan, guys like Sadler Vader, guys like Warner Hodges and Peter Buck to [Drivin N Cryin]?

A: Well, all different things. Sadler had just broke up his band in Charleston, and I'd just moved to Charleston... He joined our band for a minute and then got picked up by Jason Isbell. We borrowed Aaron Lee Tasjan as our lead guitar player for about a year-- and then we were able to get Warner Hodges, who split time between us and Dan Baird. Then finding Laur Joamets after his fantastic tenure with Sturgill Simpson was just a complete a stroke of luck!

Q: So after 34 years in a rock n' roll band, what have you learned?

A: Continue to learn. Just make music for the sake of making music, being part of a musical community and having these fantastic artists that we to run into on the road and hang out with...It's kind of cool, but we're proud of what we've done, and next year is going to be a crazy year because we've got this new record coming out, and I think everybody's going to be kind of surprised.

continued from page 15 It's really a Drivin N Cryin record. It's got some new sounds on it, but it's got a lot of familiar sounds on it, and it's a good collection of songs. So what have I learned in 34 years? I don't know. There's challenges every day continuing, but I feel like the way we're running our business right now, as far as like managing ourselves and DIY and just having a really personal connection with our fan base seems to be working for us. I don't expect any big millions, billions selling band and their management team to ever step up and do us a favor, but every once in a while, something cool happens-- like Darius Rucker records one of your songs!

Q: A few years ago you were inducted into the Georgia Music Hall of Fame-- what's it feel like to be a Hall of Famer?

A: That was a great night. That was a really great night. It was a great honor to be recognized by the state of Georgia and their music community. That was definitely the pinnacle of our career.

Q: Do you have any pre-show rituals or superstitions? Anything to get ready for the show? Or is it just, "All hands on deck and let's blow it out of the water?"

A: No, I wouldn't say that we have any preshow rituals. Our shows are all different times

of the evening-- sometimes they're at 7:00, sometimes they're at 11:00, sometimes 12:00 Central time, which is tomorrow, wherever.

So there's no ritual per se... I like it when the four of us get together and have a drink right before we go on stage, but that doesn't always happen. Sometimes people are just rollin' in from the hotel... It's always different. So the answer to your question is no ritual.

Q: Who makes the set list? Do ya'll still do notes from the audience?

A: We don't do set lists. There's a basic theme to whatever the structure of our set will be from month to month, year to year, but we don't do a setlist. There's always going to be surprises for everyone.

Q: On December 29th, you'll be here at the Hargray Capitol Theatre. What are the chances that we'll get to witness the whole gang getting together? I'm talking about DnC and Homemade Sin throwin' down together in Macon?

A: I think there's definitely going to be some end-of-the-night jam sessions because of our kinship with the Georgia Satellites and Jason & The Scorchers-- and Warner, Dan, and Mauro. There's gonna be some cool s--t.

Q: For all the gearheads out there, tell me what your preferred bass and rig is. Do you have any instruments that have any kind of special pedigree?

A: You know, I think I'm always going to be a Fender Precision guy. I was an Ampeg SVT guy for most of my life and got tired of carrying that thing around. So now I have what's called a Markbass Minimark. It’s got a tube in it, and I play through an Ampeg cabinet, and I think it sounds just fine. I'm not really a big gear head. I know up until we got our trailer stolen, whatever it was 10

Ladies Love Outlaws, and boy, did the ladies love Waylon! I never met Waylon in any kind of traditional way just hangin’ out with them road boys-- kind of “meetin'” Paycheck, Haggard, Willie, Hank Jr or any of them. It was always loose as hell, so ya just hung out and got to feelin’ like one of them before it's over for the night. It was my favorite kind of show to shoot: Rowdy country music bordering on a rock show!

Lots of great memories and friends along the way. I miss all those nights. Sure glad I had the chance to live that life...

And get out alive... Bonus!!!

THE INTERVIEW PART II BY AARON IRONS

Jesse Dayton came to Macon back in June of this year, and despite the tornadoes building outside, he put on a helluva rock n’ roll show! If you were there (remember that open invitation Jesse gave us? Shhh, it’s our lil’ secret...) then I don’t need to rhapsodize on the sheer wizardry that Jesse exhibits with a guitar. But for those of you that missed it or stayed home due to inclement weather, well, here’s just a bit of background. Jesse Dayton’s been a fixture on the Texas music scene nearly his entire life. As teenager in Beaumont, Texas, Jesse got his first guitar and began sneakin’ into the honky tonks and bayou juke joints to learn from the natural masters. His skills took him throughout the Lonestar State and on to Nashville where a chance appearance on television led to a phone call from none other than Waylon Jennings who put Jesse to work immediately.

Jesse’s solo career started in the mid 1990’s and today, he’s known as much for his mastery with a guitar as he is for his film career. He’s also developed a strong writing style that evokes his Texas singer-songwriter heroes while counting on a unique sense of humor and connection to the music. His latest album, The Outsider, is twangy, crunchy, and a perfect follow up to the lauded and applauded 2016 album, The Revealer. When I interviewed Jesse last summer, I had no idea we’d talk for the better part of an hour. We covered his early years and influences, his legendary love for George Jones, his time with Waylon, Johnny Cash. I’d actually caught him during a rare week off at home, and he seemed perfectly willing to let the “tape” roll as long as I had questions to ask. But… All good things have to come to an end. Originally, the 11th Hour only ran the first part of Jesse’s interview, and I’d always wished we’d been able to include the whole dang enchilada! Here’s hopin’ Jesse comes back to see us in 2019!

So for those in the know and those who need to (and because I can), I present Jesse Dayton, The Interview Part Two! AI: When did you start getting into film work?

JD: Man, I tell you, that was so weird... In '07, I got this phone call from Rob Zombie saying, "Hey, we're making the ultimate white trash horror movie called The Devil's Rejects, and we think your music would be perfect."

And had you met Rob at this point?

No, no, I hadn't met him! A friend of mine gave him my number. He just cold-called me, and I was like, wow. Okay. So he flew me out to LA, and I was put up at the Chateau Marmont there on Sunset Boulevard...

Legendary hotel!

Yeah! I was in the same suite where Mr. Belushi had his “accident”! I thought my ship had come in and I was like, "Wow, you know, even a blind pig finds an acorn sometimes. So maybe this will be my big deal, you know!" So it ended up doing really well for me. I wrote this whole soundtrack called Banjo and Sullivan, which are two characters from the movie...

The great Geoffrey Lewis, who I love! And I happened to be a fan of those movies. I didn't realize to the extent... how far y'all took that making the whole album.

Yeah. Well, the guy that played opposite of Geoffrey was a guy named Lew Temple who I grew up with and is my best friend to this day! Like if I get thrown in jail in Bangkok, I'm calling Lou Temple. So he's my buddy. We've known each other since we were kids, and he's the one who introduced me to Rob. He's been in a bunch of Rob's movie, so I went on to do three more movies with Rob and was actually in Halloween-- which is still a trip because I can be trying to find some deodorant at Randall's grocery store and some little kid will come up to me and go, "Excuse me, are you Captain Clegg?"

(Laughing) To which you reply?

I say, "Yes, I am, son." But it's amazing because people who aren't into horror movies have no idea how big that franchise, Halloween, is. I mean it's huuuge! It's like a worldwide phenomenon. And Lew went on to be Axel on The Walking Dead...

Oh, yeah!

Who got shot in the head out in the prison yard! Shocking! Shocked everybody, everybody talked about it for months. So me and Lew are from the same neck of the woods. He's a Cajun guy. We grew up together.

I want to talk about The Revealer... About two years ago, I did a show with The Living Deads. And Randy from that outfit was telling me he had just got done playing with this fire-breathin' dragon of a guitar player. He'd just played with Jesse Dayton. I said, "Daddy Was a Badass?" He said, "Yes. The very same." He gave me a copy of The Revealer and...

That was nice of him!

Oh yeah, he was real cool, real cool outfit. But he gave me a copy of the record. I was listening to it, man. I'm a big rockabilly fan and that record really does satisfy that part of me. But I would be remiss if I didn't talk about the songs. You really joined the legacy of great Texas singer-songwriters. I know you've done a tribute to Kinky Friedman, and I know you hold him in high esteem...

I do.

continued from page 21 Townes Van Zandt, Guy Clark... in that realm as a songwriter. You're not just peeling off riffs. Were you “the revealer” of that record? Was that you bringin' all of Jesse Dayton out to play?

Zandt constantly. All day long. Those songs are everything. You can be a killer guitar player, man, but it doesn't really matter if you're not playing over some great song.

So you had that itch, you had that urge to get back out on the road, to It really was. I'd been away doing these movies, and I was just playing The Broken start writing. You made The Revealer, wonderful record. Now, you've Spoke in Austin, which is this legendary honky tonk where Willie [Nelson] and all got The Outsider due out... these people started out... and Ernest Tubb! My grandfather used to dance to Ernest Tubb at The Broken Spoke, and it holds about a thousand people. I would play there I'll tell you, another thing that helped me tremendously was a... John Doe is a singer every week, and the place would be packed-- and it's a mile and a half from my house. for the LA punk band X, and we made a movie together (Zombex). He called me.

So we made a joke about it. We called it The Velvet Coffin because we were making He goes, "Hey man, I'm doin' Letterman. He's fixing to be over. It's almost like it was some good bank and having a blast and all these people, actors and musicians would one of the last shows that Letterman did--and we went on David Letterman together drop by. We had Robert Plant and Vince Vaughn and all these people drop by... I just and then he took me on tour-- and then I never stopped touring! I left that gig at the said, "Hey, I could just make movies and do this the rest of my life, you know?" But Spoke. So I've been on tour... I haven't taken more than two weeks off in four years.

I just started writing songs in the meantime, and I realized that, you know, I wasn't happy doing that. I needed to go out on tour, and I needed to go play Des Moines, Iowa You cut all these new songs basically on the road? on a Monday night. I needed to get out to the people. I just said, "You know what? I'm gonna make a record, and I'm just going to use my own money-- 'cause I'm doing okay Yeah, I did. I cut all the new record while I was on tour because a lot of the records now. I bought a house, got some movie money put away. I don't have to run out and that I love, especially like the classic rock stuff... If you look at Allman Brothers or sign a record label and have them tell me what they want me to do. So I just went into Zeppelin or any of that kind of stuff, they would cut on the road because they were on tour all the time. They weren't... Everybody thinks that this legendary studio (Sugar Hill) in Houston where they cut all the brothers were just held up in Miami partying for six this stuff with a buddy of mine, John Evans, and we made that months, but they weren’t. And they would cut three songs record The Revealer. And then this label in Los Angeles (Blue in Nashville and three songs in LA, four songs in New York Elan) said, "Hey, we'll put it out as is. We love it." All of the songs City... So I kind of did that with this one and then I got this came from about four years of just kinda... me recharging. I got kind of mastermind guy named Vance Powell. He worked a bunch more of 'em! You know some of the other ones ended with Sturgill Simpson and Chris Stapleton and Jack White. up on the new record-- but some of them I wrote with friends of I LIKE ALL KINDS OF He mixed the record after I cut it in all these studios. mine. I wrote "Possum Ran Over My Grave" about George Jones STUFF, MAN. I LOVE with a buddy of mine… It's all the stuff that I love, man. MISSISSIPPI STUFF. Well, you know, I got a bunch o' guitars-- and I've always had a bunch because I do different gigs. Sometimes I'm I LIKE WESTERN That's what I like about it. I always wonder, and I making it squonk over in the corner and sometimes I'm asked this question a lot...Our radio station here, SWING AND STUFF playing some kind of countrypolitan hillbilly stuff that we are formally an Americana format radio station.

LIKE THAT, AND I LIKE needs to be super clean. But with this band, I've been usin' However, Americana? That's a big catch-all. It can ROCK N' ROLL MUSIC a 1965 Blackface Super Reverb. encompass so many different things. How do you describe what you do? Because you can't call it country. 'Cause there's no way you would want to put yourself into the same category as some of the things that are coming out Top 40-wise in Nashville-but you get to do the country music when you want to. So what do you call what you do?

FROM MEMPHIS. ALL THAT STUFF MEANS A LOT TO ME.

Well, I call it American music. That's what I tell people. Ask me, "What kind of music you do?" I go, "American." And they're like, "Really? But you're from Texas!"

You know us Texans, we kind of get full of ourselves.

Stylistically, you could say, "I play Texas music", and I believe anybody you said that to would probably understand.

Yeah, they would-- but there's a lot more to it. I mean, I love that folk-blues pickin' style from Georgia, you know? I like all kinds of stuff, man. I love Chicago blues, I don't love just Mississippi stuff. I like Western Swing and stuff like that, and I like rock n' roll music from Memphis. All that stuff means a lot to me. I think what the problem with that music is, there's a lot of people who just kind of recreate it and then there's people like me, I think, who were not only born into it, but we're telling real stories that have happened. So those story songs... You can get a room full of awesome musicians, man-and they don't have a good song between them? It doesn't matter how great they are.

At the end of the day, it all goes back to the song.

It really does! And you know, I can remember living in a garage apartment in Houston for a couple of years. I think I paid $150 a month for it, and I had a '49 Ford and a Gretsch guitar... But I remember every day on the-- this is kind of before the Americana thing was called Americana-- but they played Guy Clark and Townes Van

That's my favorite.

So many of my favorite records were cut with that! And I got some smaller ones that I'll use too, I'll bring out a Princeton-- or I got a couple of Blues Juniors that I use sometimes for like in-stores. But my guitars... I've always been a tele guy, and I got a bunch of teles. And I usually carry a couple of teles on tour with me-- but I got this one guitar that I played in this Rob Zombie movie 'cause Rob goes, "Hey man, we should make a really evil guitar for you.” And I was like, "Well, if you want to pay for it, if you're gonna write the check, I'll make it evil! It'll blow your mind!" So I called this buddy of mine who's a guitar maker in California, and he made this thing that looks like a Trini Lopez on crack! Everybody looks at, and they're like, "Oh, that's a weird Gretsch!" But it's not. It's one of a kind.

Is that the one that looks like it's got horns?

Horns! Yeah, it's got TV Jones pickups and a Bigsby, and it doesn't go out of tune! I can just spank it to death, and it won't go out of tune. So I use that a lot, man, because I travel with a three-piece, so it's all about changing guitar sounds and styles. That's a big part of it. But I've got a really hot band that's been with me for about the last four years. In fact, my drummer lives in Tucker, Georgia! His name's Kevin Charney. I tell people all the time, he can do the two things I love. He can play that little boot-scootin'-let's-makesome-little-redneck-babies shuffle, or he can melt your face! And he sings like he's an Everly brother! He's been working with me... I found him in Atlanta, and I was like, "Hey man, you know the band's doing pretty good now. You're making good money. If you want to move to Austin, it's awesome here! He's like, "Nah, that's all right, brother.

I'm going to stay in Tucker, Georgia." So we kid him all the time, and I always introduce him, "The man from Tucker, Georgia who won't move!"

DEVON ALLMAN New Year’s Eve in Macon, GA is poised to be a memorable one when The Allman Betts Band descends upon The Grand Opera House. You know there will be classic songs, definitely some new material from Devon Allman, Duane Betts, and Berry Oakley Jr, and I’d wager money on a guest appearance or two (I tried to get him to spill, kids, but Devon’s too cool). With an album scheduled to drop just in time for the 50th Anniversary of the Allman Brothers Band, expect ‘19 to be a new era for one of rock n’ rolls most celebrated legacies.

AI: You've had Duane Betts out with your band for a while now. What was the point where you guys decided, "Okay, it's time to make this official." And when did Berry Oakley Jr get involved?

DA: Duane and I have known each other since the Dreams tour in '89, and it just made sense, you know? I think with his father retired, and my father passed away, we'd seen each other quite a bit lately-and it's like, "Man, let's go tour together." He has a great new EP out, and it gave him a chance to kind of get in front of my audience and play. And then we got to play together and play some of your dad's songs. The timing was perfect, and then once we were out on the road a few months, we were like, "Well, let's see if we can write some tunes together!" We wrote some really great tunes, and it's the 50th Anniversary of the Allman Brothers next year-- so it made sense to bring Brother Barry along, you know? We've known him forever too.

AI: You are planning a new album in 2019. Have you started that production yet?

DA: It's done. It's in the can. We're really excited about it. We just did it at Muscle Shoals. We were the first band to make a record there since the Black Keys did it-- like six years ago? They're mostly a museum, but it's still a functioning studio. We did it all to two-inch analog tape instead of any kind of digital recording. So it's going to sound old, man, in a good way.

AI: You did the majority of the writing together with Duane on that one?

DA: Yes, and a cat out of LA by the name of Stoll Vaughan. He wrote with Mellencamp and stuff. He was kind of a mediator for a us.

Proved to be really cool. It was a really good partner ship.

AI: You've got the big New Year's Eve concert at the Grand Opera House coming up here. Have you got any special guests coming with you or any secrets you can share at this point?

DA: Oh, I would never give that up! But there's some major... A good magician never gives away his tricks. You're not gettin' 'em out of me, but I will tell you, there's going to be some major guests that night.

Absolutely.

AI: You've been performing in Macon a long time. Has this city changed for you or does it feel different since your father's passing?

DA: No. Macon will always have that special spot for my family. Always.

AI: I don't know if you've been keeping up with the progress, but big things are coming with the renovation and expansion of Capricorn Studios in Macon.

DA: Super cool.

AI: Can we expect to see the Allman Betts take up residence for a project there? Is that something you would want to do?

DA: You never know. I would keep that in mind for sure.

AI: Anybody, in particular, you'd like to work with? If you could put that together?

DA: Oh man, that list is probably... You got about a week here, bro? There's a lot, a lot of cats. We have a lot of friends. We just got done doing a big show at The Fillmore in San Francisco. That was Samantha Fish, and G. Love, and Robert Randolph, and Cody and Luther Dickinson, and Jimmy Hall... There's a lot of friends in the biz. But I don't know, man. I'm really having fun making music with Duane and Berry right now. We'll see where it goes.

AI: I know that you've been doing this a long time, but I got to ask you-- does all of that ever feel just a little bit surreal?

DA: Sometimes it is surreal for sure. Yeah. Because, you know, I grew up in Corpus Christi, Texas with not a lot, and I fell in love with music at a very, very young age. I really never thought I'd be living my dreams like this. It's pretty amazing.

FEELS LIKE LOCAL

BY SCOTT MITCHELL If you have taken a walk in Downtown Macon lately, you have probably noticed that Macon’s cool factor has risen a couple of degrees thanks to the recent installation of four original sculptures. The Macon Sculpture Walk is the brain child of Mary Johnson, the Creative Services Director at WGXA and the Downtown Macon Community Association. As the president of the DMCA, I applied for and received a Downtown Challenge Grant from the Community Association of Central Georgia to create Downtown Macon’s inaugural sculpture walk. We held an open call for sculptures and many were submitted from all over the United States. In the end, four sculptures were chosen from three different sculptors.

Greg Mendez created Elli3 which is displayed in front of The Dempsey Hotel at the corner of Cherry Street and Third Street. Greg was raised in the rural town of Decatur, Indiana and studied at the University of St. Francis School of Creative Arts in Ft. Wayne, IN, graduating with a B.F.A. in sculpture.

Greg’s sculptures have been included in many juried public displays throughout the United States, and he has been the recipient of numerous awards. Greg’s brother, Alex Mendez created Peace-- in front of Michael’s on Mulberry at the corner of Mulberry Street and Second Street-- and Come Together-located at the corner of Poplar Street and Third Street. Alex studied music in college and his love of music can be seen in his sculptures. When he’s not in the workshop creating art, you can most likely find him with his guitar.

Our final sculptor for the exhibit, Nathan Pierce, is the son of a stone-mason. His father taught him the value of craftmanship. The abstract contemporary forms of Nathan Pierce's public art installations are softly rooted in the notion of technology and communication and the role that it plays in everyday life. Nathan’s sculpture, Orange Pop, is installed in Turpin Park near Plum Street on Third Street. These sculptures are available for purchase and will be on display for the next year. There was an Artist’s Party on November 29th to welcome all the sculptors to Macon. Alex Mendez said, “The welcome here has just been overwhelming”. And from the selfies on social media, we can tell the sculptures have been embraced by the community.

The Downtown Macon Community Association also recently received another Downtown Challenge Grant to install a Freenotes Harmony Sculpture Garden in the park on Third Street between Poplar and Plum Street. This park will be filled with functional musical sculptures for generations to enjoy.

Well, we made it. A pat on the back and a celebratory dab (either kind) are in order. It’s been a tough one, to be sure. In my column alone, I have shared the trials and tribulations of owning a ravenous snail eating betta fish, dealing with people being rude about our children at restaurants, shopping cart struggles, understanding the Fortnite phenomenon, navigating (not surviving) the impending zombie apocalypse, even more shopping cart struggles, the chronicles of my failed attempts to quit smoking cigarettes, “Tip Top Tips” for both dealing with the constant barrage of awful news stories as well as advice on keeping a youthful appearance. It has been a joy to share these hurdles with you, and I hope you’ve learned something along the way.

I know I have.

At the same time, it hasn’t been all bad. Hell, the Nintendo Switch alone is responsible for countless hours of joyful nostalgia this year. The Legend of Zelda, Super Mario Odyssey, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, a new Mario Party and a new Smash Brothers? I mean really, what year was this again??

There was a new Predator movie, a new Halloween movie, a new Incredibles movie, and another entry into the Jurassic Park franchise. Steve Perry, Ice Cube, David Byrne, En Vogue, and Cypress Hill all released new albums this year-- bizarre facts I knew it without having to look them up. I’m also looking forward to that new Tears for Fears album next year. That’s a real thing that is actually happening.

Here at the end of the year, my browser history is riddled with Snopes pages and Urban Dictionary references. My children are getting older. They ask more questions, and I am forced to look up-- or make up-- more answers. Next year, we will begin to see people who were born after the attacks on September 11th earn the right to vote and join the military. That last bit isn’t supposed to be funny, but it makes me feel old, and it also blows my mind a little bit.

These things barely scratch the tip of the iceberg. We’ve covered a lot of ground together, yet there is still so much I have to share. I never got around to my column on why 80’s New Wave synth pop is the most influential genre in decades and should be respected as such, nor did I finish my think-piece on the parallels between building Gundam robot model kits and the fight to get my children to eat anything other than chicken nuggets.

I never even started the ill-advised column on the effects of a month-long all wheat, barley, and rye diet. I was gonna call it Gluten Size Me. There’s just so much to look forward to in 2019, and I can’t wait to tell you all about it. Happy New Year, everyone!

LABORIOUS WORK: STEP 1 OF PROCESSING COFFEE BEANS

While we are always looking for the most efficient, productive ways to build our businesses or professional lives, crops do not respond well to this same type of attitude. No matter the crop, mass, streamlined production sacrifices quality in some way. Do the tomatoes out of your friend's small garden always taste better? The same holds true for a coffee plant.

We have seen this first hand in Ecuador. Because the farms are small and intermixed with other crops, the resulting canopy over top of the coffee plants creates shade. This shade prompts a slow, steady maturation process that eventually creates a superior coffee bean. Many other factors play into a coffee plant's quality, but quality control in agriculture will always be more efficient on a smaller scale. But where is that line drawn? This article discusses the first stage of processing coffee. Here we will detail the process from coffee cherry to dried husk through the point of view of a hard-working Ecuadorian.

It's 6:00 in the morning, and the sun is rising. I take my first step out the door. Five miles up the road, the coffee plantation of Milton Rivadeneira waits for me.

After a little over an hour of walking, I arrive. Milton hands me an empty sack and a bucket with a rope attached. I put the rope around my neck. The bucket hangs in front of me. I head over to the edge of the plantation, gazing over the field. Where did I leave off yesterday? That's it. I find my spot and walk over.

I begin picking. One by one, I find the ripest coffee cherries. I place each one in the bucket. After 30 minutes, I've filled up my one gallon bucket. I dump them in the sack. After 4 and a half hours, I decide to take a break. One sack is full, and it's time for lunch.

I walk back up to the plantation. I chat with my friends as they finish up their work at the drying station. They are taking yesterday's thoroughly washed coffee husks and scattering them out on the table. After scattering, they rapidly pick out the defected beans and toss them in a bucket. Once they finish, we walk into the small cafeteria for lunch. The plantation owners will provide you with lunch if you would like for them to. They just take a small portion out of your pay at the end of the week.

Thirty minutes later, lunch ends. I grab another empty sack and head back out to work. I've already picked over 50 coffee plants-- it's prime harvesting season, so we won't have too many more days of this.

Four hours in, I've finished my second sack. I'm tired, and anyway, it's about time to weigh in. So I call for the truck. I walk both of my bags up to the closest dirt road and wait there. Shortly thereafter, the truck arrives. I toss my bags in the back and jump in. Finally, the day has come to a close. We all sit in the back of the truck, look at each other's work for the day, and head back to the plantation.

When we arrive, some of the younger men are waiting on us. They get our bags out of the truck and walk them over to the scales. There, Milton is waiting on us. We put each of our bags on the scale, and Mil-

ton writes down our weight. Milton actually pays us based on how many coffee cherries we pick. After weigh-in, we toss our cherries in the big washing tub.

Here, we fill up the tub with water, soak the cherries, then run the cherries through the pulp removing machine. The pulp remover creates a pile of coffee cherries, which we use as fertilization, and a pile of husks.

The husks are transferred to a second tub where they are washed thoroughly. My friends remove the viscous substance from the husk, then lay them out on drying tables.

The coffee husks will remain on drying tables for multiple weeks. Once the husks reach 15% humidity, they are moved to another drying table where they dry until they reach 11% humidity. Once they reach 11%, they are bagged up and stored, waiting to be sold. Once the tub is filled with water, I can head back home. Thankfully, Milton doesn't make us all walk. He takes us all in his truck and drops us off. It sure makes a hard day's work a little sweeter.

DAN BAIRD THE INTERVIEW BY AARON IRONS

I don’t care who ya’ are, when “Keep Your Hands to Yourself ” rolls around on your radio or preferred streaming platform, the air guitar and toe-tappin’ abound. The Georgia Satellites hit it big with that single back in 19 n’ 86. The song is immortal, destined to be revived for television, film, and your local watering hole for epochs-- but if that’s the end of your experience with that outfit and Dan Baird… shame on you! I can sit and debate the definition and philosophy of rock n’ roll ad nauseam (lean my head over the rail, hurl, and get right back to the topic at hand), love to do it in fact. One thing I’ve learned during my life-long musical catechism is that Dan Baird is the rocker equivalent of the secret handshake-- know it and you’re in the club. Dan’s a tireless songwriter and performer. After leaving the Satellites, Dan released Love Songs for the Hearing Impaired in 1992. Since then there’s barely been a year that didn’t see him recording and touring solo with multiple entities in The Yayhoos and The Bluefields or playing guitar and producing for artists like Chris Knight, Will Hoge, Stacie Collins, Hayes Carll, the X-Rated Cowboys… In 2008, Homemade Sin became Dan’s main core of co-conspirators. Today, the band features fellow Satellite Mauro Magellan and Scorcher Warner Hodges with bassist Sean Savacool augmenting the sound. Last year saw the release of Solow, a lone wolf project for Baird, as well as Rollercoaster. For me, it’s not the fact that Dan Baird is still active and making records; it’s the fact that he’s still writing songs and making rock n’ roll music that defies age and era. Need a recommendation of where to start?

How ‘bout DB&HS’s new album, Screamer? It’s everything true rock n’ roll music should be-- real, live, and bleeding. You can expect a mix of old and new from the band when they join Drivin-N-Cryin at the Hargray Capitol Theatre on December 29-- but you can bet on possibly the last great rock n’ roll show of 2018!

AI: I thought the SoLow album was amazing (it made my Top 5 of 2017, for what that's worth)-- but you released that sans Homemade Sin. What was behind that decision?

DB: Well, thanks. Two factors at play... I've wondered what it would sound like if I did go and make one by myself, at least until we get to drums-- which I really can't do. And background voices-- which I like another voice. Two of me singing is kinda grating. It didn't cost anything as I had a recording rig in the basement and some songs that for one reason or another didn't work well with Homemade Sin and a couple of new ones. Plus I wanted to be the solo guitarist. I mean, Warner's gonna play circles around me, and if he's involved, I don't get to be "the guy". I enjoy playing bass, I could put too much fake B3 on, too many acoustics and see how much trouble I could get in. Lots! Very fun to do.

And then you and Homemade Sin released Rollercoaster directly after SoLow... I hear that album, and it's as mean and angsty as anything a garage band full of twenty-somethings has written this century. How do you stay rock n' roll in a world that clearly wants to bend towards pop music?

Thanks again. Actually, it's pretty easy for me. I just try to play what my body likes, bring the mind in when I have to-- but body/spirit intelligence is way smarter than the brain. I value intuition and physical truth above anything else. You KNOW when you're really there, first-person, and everything else is second place. If I get stuck, I'll ask the brain to help, but I prefer the trance when I write. That said, the brain is nice to be Mr. Editor, Mr. Finish-thelast-verse-asshat, Mr. Did-you-steal-that-lock-stock-and-barrel-from-NickLowe? I love pop music, I can't make it. When I say "pop", I'm talking ABBA, The Monkees, BeeGees. I love that stuff. I turned off my radio in 1996, so pop music is frozen in time for me. I've always, always been attracted to playing music with some ass in it. I think the last band to hit me where I live was The Replacements, so that was mid-80's. Paul's [Westerberg] got a wonderful sense of drive, melody, that angst, and it was just his version of mashing everything he liked and could do into music. Which is what I still try to do.

Hard to find that in new music and have me understand it at the same time.

You gave us all a pretty good scare when you revealed your diagnosis of chronic lymphocytic leukemia last year.

I'm sure you're tired of answering the, "How're you feelin'" questions-- but how are you feelin'? And what were you binge-watching during your recovery?

Well, I look and feel pretty damn good for a dead guy. I've been in remission since January. It's holding so far. That's the best a cancer survivor can actually hope for. Might come back, who knows? But once you've had it you're more likely to have it pop back up again. Right now, it's in a locked cage in the corner with a blanket over it, and I do hope it stays there. FOOTBALL! I was in treatment September through January. If I had to be laid up, no better time for me. I also wrote a lot of songs. Wasn't too sick 10-11 days in my every 2-week chemo cycle. Most of Screamer was written then.

Legend has it that you never, ever use a set list. How do you balance a live show with new material and fan favorites? Or do you?

I saw NRBQ do the "no set list" thing in ‘80 or ‘81. Admired it so much, so when I got a band good enough to "just f'n go!" I gave it a shot. Now, if I do have less than 90 [minutes], and we're trying to make a statement, like at a festival, I'll have a list, but it ain't the same. Safe sex. Opening for DnC, I'm not gonna use one. Tear it up for an hour, try and remember the huggy kissy song. If I do a new song, I like to follow it up with an older song, but that's not a hard and fast rule. I've been telling audiences lately that I know most of them came to hear old familiar songs, and we want to play nothing but new ones, so let's meet in the middle. When I'm picking tunes well, it can get an alchemy going that's pretty easy to convey to the audience.

Within a show, you mix it up with songs you've recorded solo, with various bands, and some choice covers. What's the weirdest segue or combination of songs you've ever performed live?

Oh man, I can't judge that! When we play “Dang Me” by Roger Miller, it always lights up the band and crowd, so whatever comes before and after have a way different feeling to them. I try real hard to keep Warner, Mauro and Sean a little off kilter, so they might find something new to play inside the song I just called out, even though they played it last night or last week.

It's really fun to pull out some tunes once a month, listen to us remember it and go after it hard.

About 13 years ago, I busted an eardrum at an Olympic Ass-Kickin' show. I was terrified of seeing the Yayhoos live because ya'll were known for being... well, LOUD! Having said that, what are the odds of a Yayhoos show coming back around for some live dates? Or maybe an album?

Better than they were. Yayhoos are gonna play a bar we opened in North Carolina 20 years ago this spring. Just sounded like fun. No other plans right now. Sorry ‘bout your ears!

If there's a story, I haven't heard it-- but is there tale behind that top hat? And do you use it for any kind of storage?

Ok, my wife bought it for me for Christmas 4-5 years ago, and I realized it was a good idea to wear it in the Bluefields while playing bass. I CAN play bass, but it takes every ounce of concentration to do so. I really can't even move much while I'm doing it. So the hat became my persona. I then realized it was a really good looking headband. I could go on stage with that hat, old boots, jeans, and a t-shirt and look ok. I pack it in the suitcase filled with socks, so it doesn't get crushed.

What's the strangest billing you've ever shared with another artist or band? Did it work?

Sats days. David Bowie (Glass Spider tour), Duran Duran, the Satellites opening. It did work on two of the three dates.

You just released Screamer (which will make my 2018 Top 5 in this issue)-- and that's what it is, a rock n' roller that exceeds expectations. Did you have any reservations about making a new album and jumping back on the road?

Making the record, no, I was so ready for that. End of February the chemo fog lifted, so when the end of March hit, I was chompin’ at the bit to start making these songs go to work. It was the first time I was really playing with Sean. Both a little nervous but made it through fine. Warner and Mauro took Joe Blanton, our buddy and producer, out as vocalist/guitarist for Homemade Sin (I wouldn't have given my blessing to it with anyone else). Our old bassist, Micke Björk, HAD to bail. Family stuff, and it was real, so we had to get a new guy. Made a bunch of calls, nope. Then I asked Brad Pemberton (Bluefields drummer) who he thought would fit. Sean Savacool was his answer. He said yes, and got thrown in the fire with Joe to fulfill our shows while I recovered. Warner and Mauro loved him. Touring, I was a little worried at first. I was rusty as hell. Nine months off. Second week I was fine. Took a little while to get hand strength back. You just don't play the same way at home. We called it "getting back in football shape". Practice just ain't the same.

If you could go back in time and see one live performance from any other artist or era-- who would it be?

Otis Redding. I could care less what show.

Other than Homemade Sin, what projects are you involved with going into 2019? Any producer roles? Films? Any new artists getting the "Dan Baird Stamp of Approval?"

Well, I'm playing on a new Chris Knight record in December right before Christmas. Producing isn't gonna happen much anymore. For the price of a producer, you can buy your own recording rig and DIY, and figure it out. Studio time price was the driving force behind hiring a producer. You couldn't afford to waste it. You can waste all the time you want in your basement. I know. There's some great s--t coming out of Nashville these days. Aaron Lee Tasjan & Jon Latham come to mind. There's a whole cool scene working there. Guys in their 20's and 30's doing solid work. Makes me hopeful.

Scrape away the assaults, deadly storms, political dissonance, protests, shootings, war, and wildfires of 2018, and we had a… year. So there’s nowhere to go but… 2019!

ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD

With a plethora of movies coming out next year including more Marvel blockbusters and several Disney live-action remakes (see above) there’s plenty to be excited about-- but one of the films I’m looking forward to most is Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. Quentin Tarantino’s first new film in four years should be one of the 2019’s best. Well, I say that hoping it will be. Unpopular opinion alert: His last film, The Hateful Eight, was one of his worst to date. Centered around the Manson Family murders in 1969 Los Angeles and two fictional characters’ involvement, it’s sure to be interesting. There’s a star-studded cast (as always) that includes Leonardo DiCaprio as a fading actor and Brad Pitt as his stunt double embarking on some type of way back into the spotlight. These characters are surrounded by fictional representations of classic Hollywood elite of the era including Sharon Tate (Margot Robbie), Steve McQueen (Damian Lewis), George Spahn (played by Bruce Dern, Spahn allowed the Manson family to reside on his property), and oh-so-many more! Not a lot of details have been released about the specifics of the story-- but knowing how Tarantino likes to interpret history, it should be wild.

I am also taking out a small loan because this is the year I will spend in the movie theatre. two years, I’ve been campaigning to find a tour date that would place Reckless Kelly onstage at the Hargray Capitol Theatre. Finally, like a Christmas miracle, it has happened. I’m reasonably sure Hubble Beasley, who manages the venue, is really Santa Claus. On Saturday, March 30th, Reckless Kelly will finally play a Macon show! Not only are they making an appearance, but it’s also a monster double bill with Paul Thorn! This is a must-see concert. REQUIRED LISTENING In my world, alt-country is still a thing, and it’s exactly what the name implies-- the alternative to the piss-poor facsimile being Frankenstein-ed and foisted upon North America. First up, Corb Lund is rumored to have not one but two new albums in the works for 2019! One of them would be his tenth studio album while the other could be an EP of covers. Lund has a punk rock heart to match his cowboy pedigree, so that could prove an eclectic stew. Next up, Zephaniah Ohora is currently crowdfunding his new album (yes, I have secured my copy). This Highway snuck up on me last year, and after seein’ Zeph and the 18 Wheelers on the Creek Stage (twice), he’s got me ready for the sophomore effort and another live show. The thing that’s got me most excited is the confirmation of Chris Knight’s new album-- you know, the one we’ve been waitin’ on for nearly 6 years?

Thanks, Dan Baird, for sharing that piece o’ information! Watching the trends in Americana bending towards the rockin’ country sound has got me champin’ at the bit. So come on ‘19! My pearls are snapped and my J-45 is just enough in tune for one more ride!

RECKLESS KELLY AT THE HARGRAY CAPITOL THEATRE

It’s not a secret that I’m a HUGE fan of Reckless Kelly. Raised in Idaho, Cody and Willie Braun cut their teeth on the road touring with their father’s Texas Swing outfit, Muzzie Braun and The Boys. They relocated to Austin, Texas in 1996 and formed Reckless Kelly, while younger brothers, Micky and Gary, became Micky and The Motorcars. Reckless Kelly’s massive appeal on the Texas Red Dirt music scene meant the Brauns rarely had to tour outside of their home base to make a comfortable living. It’s a special occasion to catch them east of the Mississippi River. For the last

Oh, the musical rabbit holes that open up around the Creek studios and drag you in like Sarlacc tentacles. It’s amazing any real work gets done at all. “Did you ever listen to any of Linda Perry’s solo stuff?”, David Higdon asked me one day. Did I? I was working in the electronics section of a Walmart in 1996 when Perry’s In Flight debuted.

It seemed terribly out of place with the regular delivery of Jock Jams, Shania Twain, and “Macarena” singles. Perry had been the frontwoman for the 4 Non Blondes, and even though (like a fair number of Earthlings) I was worn out with “What’s Up”, I still thought ‘92’s Bigger, Better, Faster, More was a cool album. I took In Flight home (yes, I paid for it… I think), and was blown away. I’d heard “Knock Me Out” on The Crow: City of Angels soundtrack (the only redeeming factor of that p.o.s.) that arrived over the summer. The duet with Grace Slick gave me chills then and seemed to gain power in its natural habitat. I spent years trying to work up my own version of “Fill Me Up”. Listen to Perry’s vocal acrobatics on In Flight, and you’ll understand why I threw in the towel. The album was produced by Bill Bottrell who’d earned Grammys for his work with Michael Jackson, Madonna, and Sheryl Crow (Tuesday Night Music Club, another excellent album), but there’s more than a little of Linda at the helm. Perry went on to produce hits for Christina Aguilera, Pink, and Gwen Stefani to name a few… and while that doesn’t really impress me (shock, awe, and surprise?), In Flight did and still does. It’s warm, well-written and represents the mid-1990’s rock sound while still sounding relevant today.

TONY DOOLIN (CREEKSIDE MORNINGS) 1- Free Yourself Up, Lake Street Dive This album has held my number one slot since it was released. Over time, it has only gotten better. See them at The Hargray Capitol Theatre on January 14th.

2- A Star Is Born Original Soundtrack The movie will make you cry. The soundtrack will only serve as a reminder that the movie made you cry. With writing credits from Jason Isbell, Lukas Nelson, Lady Gaga, Brandi Carlile, and Lori McKenna, the soundtrack is a winner. I’m crying right now.

3- Lonesome As A Shadow, Charley Crockett Charley has been cranking out albums with frightening speed, and they just keep getting better. Apparently, he has a number of albums already in the can, ready for release. He is the Prince of American Roots music.

4- The Tree Of Forgiveness, John Prine If Jason Isbell is the Lebron James of songwriting, John Prine is the Michael Jordan. With a swift stroke of the pen, the 71-year-old Prine’s latest effort is a slam dunk.

5- Gran Pavo Real, Great Peacock My first time seeing Great Peacock live was during Bragg Jam 2017 at Grant’s Lounge. I became an instant fan, and this album features solid production and songwriting top to bottom. Plus, Blount wears serapes.

HONORABLE MENTIONS: Healing Tide, The War and Treaty A great record, but compared to their debut EP, some of the songs felt rushed. Still great but not a Top 5.

Live At The Ryman, Jason Isbell The album is perfect if you’ve never seen Isbell play one of his legendary live shows at The Ryman in Nashville. I’ve seen one, so it didn’t crack my Top 5.

DAVID HIGDON (COWPUNK RODEO, CREEKSIDE MORNINGS) 1- Hell On, Neko Case It had been five years since Neko’s last album, but the wait provided her with a canon of material from which to pull from. What makes Neko’s enigmatic songwriting and structure so sonically rich? The fact that she is not trying to get any radio play-- she makes the album that she wants to make. The songs are full of animal metaphors and perfect lyrical delivery. The duet with Eric Bachman on the Crooked Fingers’ “Sleep All Summer” is hauntingly terrific.

2- Good to Go, Glen Matlock This album was a welcome surprise by a musical legend. Glen seems to be very comfortable in his current time and space without any need to revisit his ‘70s heyday. The album has a classic rock formula born from the ‘50s. This makes sense in that Slim Jim Phantom from the Stray Cats plays drums and guitarist Earl Slick plays along fittingly. Some tracks sound as though they could have been written by the Heartbreakers and others by Screamin’ Jay Hawkins. Definitely worth a listen.

3- Pressure and Time, The Delta Bombers Rock n’ Roll that is dirty, raunchy, and wild.

Rockabilly with a purpose and an edge. The Vegas-based Bombers return with their fourth studio album. The rowdiness is apparent on the chugging rhythm of “Jump Back Baby” while “Sorrow and Pain” slows the tempo and highlights the band’s deeper songwriting abilities.

4- II, Lucifer What if Stevie Nicks had fronted Black Sabbath? Ever wondered about the raw force that would’ve been Pat Benatar backed by Dio’s band? Lucifer is the key to the heaviest blues

3- Black Velvet, Charles Bradley Classic Soul/R&B lost two of its greatest ambassadors with last year’s passing of Sharon Jones and Charles Bradley. We should all be thankful for this final posthumous release from the Screamin’ Eagle of Soul.

4- Wide Awake, Rayland Baxter This felt like a major breakthrough for Rayland Baxter. He holed up in an abandoned rubber factory and found his muse to deliver an amazing set of pop/rock originals that somehow feel like solo Lennon, solo McCartney, and Beach Boys all at once.

rock out now. II is full of dark bass riffs, driving guitars, and the ‘70s vocal stylings of Johanna Sadonis. Turn this one way up to be thrown back in time to a sound that is powered by a Trans Am and your favorite leather jacket.

5- Rainier Fog, Alice in Chains Being the third album put out by the band featuring singer William DuVall, Alice in Chains has now put out as many albums as they did with original singer Layne Staley. The material is as dark, moody, and brilliant as it ever was. Sludgy menace that features the signature vocal harmonizing between DuVall and guitarist Jerry Cantrell. Will the band ever reach the attention of the masses as they did during their ‘90s rise to fame? No, but they have kept true to their sound, material, and fans.

This album will sound as distinct in 2018 as it will when played in 2028.

HONORABLE MENTION: Tokyo Bay/Crying Inside EP, Nick Lowe If only it had been a full album. Nick rocks harder on this album than he has in over a decade. The cover of The Bee Gees’ “Heartbreaker” is an example of how to update a song by accentuating verse over chorus.

There is a sound there that is reminiscent of Johnny Cash’s covers in his later days. Musical masked marauders Los Straitjackets provide the backing band for Lowe.

WES GRIFFITH (THE MID-MORNING RAMBLE) 1-Free Yourself Up, Lake Street Dive This may be the best band in the land right now.

These classically-trained musicians, led by powerhouse vocalist Rachel Price, deliver their tightest collection of songs to date. Their incredibly-difficult-to-describe style delivers retro R&B/Soul/ Funk with a pop sensibility and jazz-inspired song structure.

2- Mr. Jukebox, Joshua Hedley We finally got the long-awaited album from Nashville songwriter Joshua Hedley, and the wait was worth it. An amazing collection of classic country originals that would feel right at home in the late 50’s and early 60’s.

2- Other Arrangements, Parker Milsap Americana’s Leonardo DiCaprio delivers a homerun of a record with the follow up to The Very Last Day. In just a matter of a few years, 25-year-old Milsap has put his stamp on Americana in a big way. Strong, powerful guitar licks, lyrics, and charisma will have you singing his songs for a long time.

3- Providence Canyon, Brent Cobb Funk country with a hint of Southern Rock that kicks you right in the mouth.

4- Sunlight Tonight, Parker Gispert Damn...two Parkers on my list. Didn’t expect this one, but it came on strong. Parker Gispert (of The Whigs) released his first solo album in November 2018. Filled with perfect pop-rock melodies and beautiful string arrangements, Sunlight Tonight is an ethereal blend of lo-fi rock sounds from the past 20 years.

5- Karma for Cheap, Aaron Lee Tasjan Sur f/Pun k/Amer ic ana/Psyche delic/B e ach Boys-esque… Hell, who knows what we’ll get next?

But I’m ready. Tasjan does a little bit of it all, and he never does it half-assed. That’s what makes it great.

Karma for Cheap is a thrill and a chill all in one.

5- Lonesome as a Shadow and Lil G.L.’s Blue Bonanza, Charley Crockett The hardest working man in Americana rounds out the list with 2 fantastic albums in 2018. Lonesome as a Shadow showcases Charley’s growing confidence as a songwriter and Lil G.L.’s Blue Bonanza gives you a little peek at how he honed his chops-- playing classic honky tonk music in Texas.

I can’t stop listening to “Good Time Charley’s got the Blues.”

AARON IRONS (8 ‘TIL LATE, HONKY TONK HELL) 1- Tokyo Bay/Crying Inside, Nick Lowe & Los Straitjackets Absolutely, categorically, emphatically, positively, my #1 record of 2018. I’d like to complain that Lowe only released four tracks, but I can listen to every one 10x in a row and hit repeat. No it’s not an album, but it’s too good not to include!

2- Screamer, Dan Baird There is no substitute for Baird and his brand of rock n’ roll. If you’re lookin’ for me, I’ll be at the Capitol on December 29th.

3- Things Change, American Aquarium Okay, so I’m a little bit biased… BJ Barham (the actual “Hardest Workin’ Man in Americana”) gave me one of my best interviews this year. But he gave us all a helluva a record. New incarnation, same uncompromising vision. Things do indeed change-- and for AA, they’ve only gotten better.

4- The Outsider- Jesse Dayton Jesse Dayton is the livin’, fire-breathin’ link to honky tonk’s history, Americana’s present, and rock n’ roll’s future. Toss in that hillbilly humor and a horror film or two and you’ve got an icon.

He slew the Creek Stage last summer-- here’s hopin’ for a return engagement!

5- Years, Sarah Shook & The Disarmers Lonesome, ornery, and just plain ole’ mean. What country music shouldn’t be missing.

It moves me in ways that no other album can. It brings out the best of me and the worst of me. Love, hate, tears…

2- A Star is Born Original Soundtrack Two words: LADY GAGA. This is an ALL-STAR soundtrack from performances to the songwriting. Lukas Nelson, Jason Isbell, Mark Ronson, Dave Cobb, Brandi Carlile, Hillary Lindsey, Natalie Hemby… The movie is amazing, the music is BRILLIANT. Gaga is raw, stunning, and showcas-

es her full, ginormous range. It’s heart-wrenching and haunting, and I can’t stop listening.

3- Interstate Gospel, Pistol Annies Proves that the Annies are a force to be reckoned with. These ladies preach the truth through their lyrics and harmonies. These songs make you think that the three ladies are your best friends-- the ones you call to help dispose of a body. The record is poignant, painting the perfect picture of women that hurt, struggle, and persevere.

4- Free Yourself Up, Lake Street Dive A blend of neo-soul, jazz, folk, funk, and rock. It’s all folded together so carefully that you can pick apart the layers and appreciate them all. From start to finish, this entire record is amazing. “Dude”, “Red Light Kisses”, “I Can Change”, “Good Kisser”... There are too many to name that are just awesome!

5- Tree of Forgiveness, John Prine A reminder of why we love and can’t live without this man. It’s been 13 years since we’ve had an album, so it’s safe to say it was damn time! Prine is a poet. A lyricist. A troubadour.

He’s everyone’s favorite granddad that always has the best stories to tell. I adore track 10, “When I Get to Heaven”… I feel like after listening to this record, that I need to bake him a pie or refill his sweet tea.

HONORABLE MENTION: Wouldn’t It Be Great, Lorett Lynn Produced by her daughter, Patsy Lynn Russell and John Carter Cash. The title track was the last song she wrote for her late husband, Doo. It was so personal that she couldn’t ever sing it around him. After postponing the release due to a stroke, this album just proves that Loretta can still write better than 99% of Nashville-- and performs better than most of them too.
