Medical Student Section News Medical students: Back to school By Jenny Young, Engagement Manager

The Medical Student Section (MSS) has had a busy and exciting summer! After months of planning, the events for the academic year have begun. The Medical Society of Virginia (MSV) has student chapters at Eastern Virginia Medical School (EVMS), University of Virginia School of Medicine (UVA), Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine (VCU) and Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine (VTC). Each chapter has a leadership team comprised of students elected by their peers. The chapter leadership teams at each school have been hard at work planning recruitment and community building social events. They have worked diligently to increase students’ awareness of MSV from their first day of medical school in the hopes that they will become active and engaged members of MSV. Since the beginning of August, MSV MSS has held the following events to introduce Virginia’s newest medical students to MSV: • MSV had a presence at the UVA, VCU and EVMS student activity fairs (the VTC activity fair will occur in October) • Engagement Manager Jenny Young spoke during lunch lectures to the VCU, UVA and EVMS first year students during their orientation weeks • Cynthia Romero, M.D. spoke to the EVMS first year students during a lunch lecture • The VTC student chapter held a barbeque social event with Dean Cynda Johnson, M.D. as speaker • The VCU student chapter held a donut and coffee social for first year students • The UVA student chapter held a brewery social at Three Notch’d Brewery in Charlottesville • The VCU student chapter held a brewery social at Triple Crossing Brewery in Richmond following the first exam of the academic year

The events have led to conversations that have given our current student leaders the opportunity to share their personal experiences and passion for the organization to their peers. Sentiments such as: “MSV gave me the opportunity to have my voice heard. My student membership in MSV equipped me with the tools I need to successfully advocate for my profession and future patients.” —Monica Melmer (UVA) “MSV has enhanced my medical school experience by allowing me to meet a number of physicians who would have otherwise seemed unreachable. These physician leaders have subsequently become mentors and friends.” —Lee Ouyang (EVMS) “Looking back on my time with the MSV, I’ve realized more than ever that we are more than just classmates, more than just medical students in Virginia. We’re a family, which has grown both in size and in solidarity, and one that I am proud to be a part of.” —Chris Li (VTC) “While advocacy is a major part of MSV and AMA, networking, educational, social, and community service events enhance the experience and makes joining the organizations an invaluable opportunity.” —Matt Wallace (VCU) The MSS’ fall membership drive runs through the end of October and the MSV chapter leaders have many more events planned to prove the importance of membership and educate their peers about why membership matters. By Nov. 1, each chapter has a goal of recruiting 70 percent of their first year class to join MSV. With how efforts are going, it is expected that multiple chapters will surpass the 70 percent recruitment goal. With the MSS’ continued growth and increased engagement, we are always seeking physicians to become involved within the section. Some opportunities for engagement include speaking to students during lunch lectures and attending local student chapter events. Should you be interested in becoming involved within the section, please reach out to Jenny Young at jyoung@msv.org.

Advocacy Champion Spotlight: Virginia Chapter, American Academy of Pediatrics

By Lindsay Larkin, Government Affairs & Political Advocacy Manager

For many years, the Medical Society of Virginia (MSV) has enjoyed a close working relationship with Virginia Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics (VA-AAP) members, staff and lobbyists. With more than 1,200 members including pediatricians and pediatric associates, the VA-AAP’s vision is to be the leading authority, advocate and voice for the health of Virginia’s children and for the profession of pediatrics. The Virginia Chapter works hard to bring together pediatricians in practice, pediatricians in academics, pediatric residents, medical students, law students, lawyers, and social workers for this important advocacy work. The VA-AAP has a strong presence at all MSV functions, including the annual White Coats on Call lobby days where they are essential partners in advocacy at the General Assembly. During the most recent Session, MSV and VA-AAP worked together to encourage the legislature to pass legislation banning smoking in cars with children under eight years old.

“I think the most important piece about AAP’s advocacy has been its unwavering attention in advocacy on making the lives of children better. Whether it was requiring child safety seats in cars until age 8, or working on banning smoking in restaurants, or fighting a veto of physical education requirements in schools, they always want to do what’s best for children, even if it’s hard as hell and they are the only ones out front! It’s sometimes challenging and can be disappointing, but they always keep at it and always with a positive attitude. It doesn’t really get more “white hat” than what the pediatricians advocate for!” —Aimee Perron Seibert, VA-AAP lobbyist MSVPAC and the government affairs team extend its gratitude to VA-AAP for all of their hard work, support, and partnership. Join them at White Coats on Call in 2017! Visit www.msv.org/wcoc for more information. Also, if you haven’t made your 2016 MSVPAC contribution it’s not too late! You can contribute online at http://mx.msv.org/MSVPACContributionsForm.aspx or via check - payable to MSVPAC and mail to MSVPAC, 2924 Emerywood Pkwy, Suite 300, Richmond, VA 23294.

Advocate for My Profession The most important White Coats on Call is right around the corner! By Lindsay Larkin, Government Affairs & Political Advocacy Manager

The Medical Society of Virginia’s (MSV) White Coats on Call is just around the corner. The 2016 edition of White Coats on Call was among the most successful yet. Not only did physicians flood the General Assembly halls and make their presence felt among key influencers, they also once again met with legislators to educate them on the impact various bills could have on medicine in Virginia.

What’s new for White Coats on Call 2017? • The days have been condensed to increase participation and cross-specialty collaboration. There will be two “All Call” days for physicians, with certain specialties highlighted on each day. There will also be a dedicated Physician Assistant day for all professional physician assistants and students • MSV will provide a robust program with guided bill updates, guest speakers, updates on MSV opportunities and more. What isn’t new? As in the past, a filling breakfast and lunch will be provided to all attendees.

The following days are currently scheduled: • Tuesday, January 24 - All Call Day • Monday, January 30 - All Call Day • Monday, February 6 - Physician Assistant Day Multiple issues were carried over to the 2017 Session, which means your attendance at the 2017 White Coats on Call lobby days is more essential than ever. MSV needs to have a strong advocacy presence at the General Assembly, and once again invites you to take part. E-mail GovtAffairs@msv.org to be added to the official White Coats on Call mailing list. The legislation at stake makes the 2017 White Coats on Call one of the most important yet. Be there to make sure your voice is heard. With your help, MSV will continue to make Virginia the best place in which to practice medicine and receive health care.

Manage My Practice Virginia Drug Card: Addressing drug spending increases By John Cenerazzo, Virginia Drug Card

A recent article by Pharmacy Times states prescription drug costs are projected to increase between 11 to 13 percent in 2016, a recent analysis found. Researchers from the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Pharmacy (UIC COP) used the IMS Health National Sales Perspectives (NSP) database to review recent cost changes and future factors likely to influence spending trends. In doing so, they projected that drug spending will increase by 15 to 17 percent in clinics, and 10 to 12 percent in hospital settings. The Virginia Drug Card is a free option to lower out-of-pocket prescription costs. If you have a high deductible, or take a medication not covered by insurance, or have no prescription coverage, the Virginia Drug Card can save you up to 75 percent. Log on to www.VirginiaDrugCard.com to print a free card. You can walk in to any CVS/Pharmacy and request to use the Virginia Drug Card. MSV News Academic deans focus on outcomes, not metrics By Jeff Linka, Project Manager

The Medical Society of Virginia’s (MSV) Academic Deans’ Forum took place on July 18 at the MSV headquarters in Richmond, Virginia. More than a dozen academic health system leaders were invited to discuss common issues such as associate physician legislation and graduated medical education (GME) funding. Attendees included:

The morning session focused on utilizing newly allocated funding that will partially subsidize 25 residency slots across the Commonwealth. MSV fought for this funding in the 2016 General Assembly session to expand the pipeline of primary care physicians and high-need specialties. The group discussed implementation challenges and ways to partner together to retain high-quality residency candidates.

Dr. Eric Gish Liberty University College of Osteopathic Medicine

The afternoon session emphasized the importance of high-quality residency programs as a pathway to licensure. Attendees discussed their opposition to the associate physician legislation and how it would undermine the current path for physician education, training and ultimately patient safety. Leaders shared how their individual institutions prepare medical students to be successful for residency and the different support structures to ensure medical graduates are ready for the next phase of their careers.

In the end, it was Richard Homan, M.D., who nicely summed up the need for continuing dialogue, stating that “the quality of undergraduate and graduate medical education in the United States continues to be regarded the best in the world. We, as stewards of the profession of medicine, have an obligation to maintain the highest level of training and credentialing to preserve the standards and reputation of medicine in order to provide the best possible care for our patients.” MSV plans to reconvene the forum again in the fall.

MSV News MSV shares expertise at national conference By Jeff Linka, Project Manager

This summer, the American Association of Medical Society Executives (AAMSE) held its annual conference in Baltimore. Executives and thought leaders from across the country delivered presentations on topics ranging from media strategy to payment models to member engagement. During the conference, there was a good chance that attendees took part in a featured breakout session that featured a Medical Society of Virginia (MSV) staff person. Four sessions at the nationally noted conference featured a MSV staff person. • Executive Vice President Melina Davis-Martin made a high profile appearance to present her groundbreaking work on Board of Directors development. • Senior Director of Government Affairs Ralston King delivered 2016 Session updates and “next steps” to an audience well aware of the national implications at stake in MSV’s efforts regarding prior authorization reform. • Lynne Hughes, Director of Development for MSV’s Foundation, lead a breakout session detailing methods on achieving work-life balance and how to avoid physician burnout. • IT Director Margaret Harris demonstrated MSV’s techniques for efficient use of technology an ever-changing corporate medical landscape. As MSV advances its national influence, a strong presence at conferences such as AAMSE’s will be vital in introducing MSV’s methods and thought leadership across multiple facets that allow for progress in practicing medicine and receiving quality care.

MSV News More on community health center physicians By Jenny Young, Engagement Manager

The Medical Society of Virginia (MSV) has partnered with the Virginia Community Healthcare Association (VCHA), the Virginia Department of Health (VDH) and the Virginia Workforce Development Authority (VWDA) to highlight physicians in Virginia practicing in community health centers. The organizations will be hosting a job fair, Community Health Connection, on Nov. 5 at the Westerre Conference Center in Richmond. It will give providers the opportunity to speak with representatives about employment opportunities at Virginia’s safety net hospitals and community health clinics. Working at these facilities provide excellent benefits such as loan repayment and work/life balance. Click here for more information on the event or please direct any questions to VCHA at recruitment@ vacommunityhealth.org. Meet a physician who has experience working at a community health center (CHC), Randall Bashore, M.D.

Randall Bashore, M.D. Randall Bashore, M.D. is a legend in the community health world and a poster child for the National Health Service Corps (NHSC). He has been with Central Virginia Health Services (CVHS) since 1985, starting straight out of his residency with MCV (now VCU). Serving as the Medical Director since 1987 and as the Clinical Director since 1995, he was both an NHSC Scholar and an NHSC Loan Repayment Program recipient.

committees as well as serving as the team physician for the local high school. Living in Fluvanna County, he loves rural life and all its outdoor amenities, particularly biking, hiking and golf, as well as living in the community where he serves. Dr. Bashore notes, “It’s both a big draw as well as a big commitment to care for your neighbors.” Dr. Bashore describes the CVHS organization as always willing to go the extra mile for people. He believes it has a caring culture and is comprised of a team that shares the desire to help others receive the best possible care. He said, “The community is so appreciative of all we do. It’s a win-win situation for all involved – the clinicians and the patients.” Dr. Bashore worries about the dwindling supply of primary care physicians, particularly those drawn to working in a rural setting. He thinks medical schools should emphasize developing and drawing students from rural areas, emphasizing the financial incentive opportunities available through NHS. He also believes in encouraging students to work in a CHC as part of their training. Training programs should give students the opportunity to see how they can make a difference and see how they can help a community in a comprehensive way. Once exposed to a CHC, he says students will see what he has learned: “It’s absolutely the perfect place to practice medicine.”

“CVHS was doing a lot of innovative things,” Dr. Bashore shared. “Such as developing a hospital practice in conjunction with the University of Virginia, which provided a more complete health care program and a full range of care for patients that was unique to community health. Between the financial incentives from NHSC, the full service approach to care and the diversity and variety of patients and health care issues, community health provided a very unique offering and a very attractive and compelling set of reasons to stay.” Dr. Bashore initially pursued internal medicine as his specialty, later adding certification in Gerontology as he saw an increasing geriatric population in his community. He is a leader in many ways in that community, sitting on several boards and advisory

MSV News MSV Marketplace success stories By Hedi Cho, Communications Manager

The Medical Society of Virginia’s (MSV) Marketplace vendors already have success stories to share from working with our physicians to help make their lives easier. Total Merchant Services (TMS), a silver level Marketplace vendor, already has rave reviews from several physician organizations that started to use its smartcard terminals and technology to help move their organizations forward. “With all the talk about the new smart cards being issued by the credit card companies I began to do a little research. When I called TMS, I was so impressed with the patience Susan Bobo had with me as I asked a million and one questions over and over and over again. Susan was so good at explaining how the credit card discounts and processing fees worked that, by the time we signed an agreement, I felt confident that we chose the best merchant services company to handle our credit card processing. I was so excited about the customer service Susan offered, not to mention the great rate plans. From signing the agreement to setting up the credit card machines I couldn’t ask for a more supportive service.” —Cindy Mattioli, Virginia Physicians, Inc. “Tuckahoe Orthopaedics has been in business many years. During the last ten years we used one credit card processing company that met our requirements and gave us a low rate. After considering several other processing companies we decided to work with TMS. Susan Bobo promised she would beat our previous rate and also provide free EMV equipment, something our former processing company would not do even though we had been a loyal customer. We have used TMS for a year now and have found Susan Bobo to be very responsive. They have saved us costs on our EMV equipment and have met their promise of keeping our rate lower than it had been and at the rate that they promised since we started with them. They have also provided reimbursement for our doctors’ MSV dues—another great savings! We would recommend this company and Susan Bobo to any of our colleagues.” —Suzanne Fenlon, Tuckahoe Orthopaedics

Have you found a way to securely process the new Visa, Master Card and Discover smart cards? If not, consider signing up with TMS through its partnership with the MSV Marketplace. When you do, you will also enjoy additional benefits like: • TMS will reimburse $125.00 of your MSV annual dues each year • Guaranteed lowest rate—TMS will lower your current (or existing) rates a minimum of 10 percent • No equipment cost ($795.00 value). TMS will pay up to $300.00 toward any termination fee with current providers • TMS does not require any type of monthly, annual or multi-year contract • Terminals operate using high speed or dial up, are secure and smart card ready • Turn-key: installation, training and excellent, ongoing customer support! Visit www.msv.org/marketplace for more information. If you have any questions about the MSV Marketplace, please contact Dustin Beekman at dbeekman@msvia.org or 804 | 422-3100, x1006.
