Standard Precautions For Infection Control

Standard Precautions are used for all patients. They’re based on risk assessment and make use of common sense practices and personal protective equipment use to protect Dental Healthcare Professionals (DHCP) from infection and prevent the spread of infection from patient to patient.

1. Hand Hygiene Hand hygiene is the most important measure to prevent the spread of infections among patients and DHCP. Education and training programs should thoroughly address indications and techniques for hand hygiene practices before performing routine and oral surgical procedures.

2. Use of Personal Protection Equipment Personal protective equipment (PPE) refers to wearable equipment that is designed to protect DHCP from exposure to or contact with infectious agents. PPE that is appropriate for various types of patient interactions and effectively covers personal clothing and skin likely to be soiled with blood, saliva, or other potentially infectious materials should be available.

3. Respiratory Hygiene/Cough Etiquette Respiratory hygiene/cough etiquette infection prevention measures are designed to limit the transmission of respiratory pathogens spread by droplet or airborne routes.

4. Sharps Safety Most percutaneous injuries (e.g., needlestick, cut with a sharp object) among DHCP involve burs, needles, and other sharp instruments. Most exposures in dentistry are preventable; therefore, each dental practice should have policies and procedures available addressing sharps safety.

5. Safe Injection Practices Safe injection practices are intended to prevent transmission of infectious diseases between one patient and another, or between a patient and DHCP during preparation and administration of parenteral (e.g., intravenous or intramuscular injection) medications.

6. Sterile Instruments & Devices Instrument processing requires multiple steps using specialised equipment. Each dental practice should have policies and procedures in place for containing, transporting, and handling instruments and equipment that may be contaminated with blood or body fluids.

7. Clean & Disinfected Environmental Surfaces Policies and procedures for routine cleaning and disinfection of environmental surfaces should be included as part of the infection prevention plan. Cleaning removes large numbers of microorganisms from surfaces and should always precede disinfection. Disinfection is generally a less lethal process of microbial inactivation (compared with sterilisation) that eliminates virtually all recognised pathogenic microorganisms but not necessarily all microbial forms (e.g., bacterial spores).

Choose the correct cleanser based on the procedure (non-antimicrobial vs antimicrobial) START

MICROSHIELD 5 Chlorhexidine Concerntrate Concentrate antiseptic solution 5% Chlorhexidine Gluconate. When diluted can be used as a pre- and post-operative skin preparation.

Concentrate must be diluted. Add 100ml of product to 150ml of distilled water and make up to IL with ethanol (96%). Once diluted wet swab and apply to affected area for 2 minutes. Allow to dry.

Antiseptic solutions should be freshly prepared and discarded after use.

Doffing PPE

Sequence for taking OFF Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) There are a variety of ways to safely remove PPE without contaminating your clothing, skin or mucous membranes with potentially infectious materials. Here is one example. Remove all PPE before exiting the patient room except for your Mask or Respirator. Remove the mask or respirator after leaving the patient room and closing the door.

Remove Gloves 4 Outside of gloves are contaminated!

4 Grasp outside of glove with opposite gloved hand; peel off.

4 Hold removed glove in gloved hand.

4 Slide fingers of ungloved hand under remaining glove at wrist.

4 Peel glove off over first glove.

4 Discard gloves in a waste container.

Perform Hand Hygiene Wash Hands or use an alcohol based hand rub immediately after removing gloves

Remove Protective Eye Wear or Face Shield 4 Outside of protective eye wear or face shield is contaminated – DO NOT TOUCH 4 Remove protective eye wear or face shield from the back (if has elastic band) or by the side arms without touching the front of the protective eye wear or face shield.

4 If disposable place into a waste container, if non-disposable place in designated receptacle for reprocessing

4 Turn gown inside out.

4 Fold or roll into a bundle and discard.

How to Don and Doff Face Masks Follow the Steps to Properly put on a Surgical Mask 1

Clean your Hands

Check the Mask

Before touching a clean medical mask, wash you hands thorougly with soap and water for at least 20 seconds and dry hand with paper towel.

Always check your new mask to ensure it has no defects, tears, holes and is dry. If any defects present throw it away and take another one.

Find the Top Side of the Mask

4.1 Place Earloop Mask on Face

The top side of the mask with have a bendable edge that can be moulded around your nose, check that the pleats point down and coloured side it out.

Adjust the Nose Piece to Fit your Nose

Pick up mask by earloops and place one earloop around one ear and then put the other loop around the other ear.

Place Tie-on Mask on Face

Pick up mask by upper ties, place the ties around the back of your head and tie the top band first before tying the bottom band.

6 Fit the Mask to your Face and Under the Chin

Pinch the bendable portion of the mask around the bridge of your nose and readjust mask ties when necessary to ensure a snug fit.

7 Adjust the Mask

Once the mask is completely secured, adjust it to ensure it covers you mouth, nose and chin.

Adjust the mask to you face without leaving gaps on the sides.

Remove the mask carefully Do not touch the front portion of the mask which may be contaminated.

Medical masks are designed to only be used once.

Therefore when you take the mask off, place it into a closed rubbish bin immediately.

Once you’ve disposed of the mask safely, wash you hands once more to ensure they are clean

WARNING FOR WEARING A MASK Do not touch the mask once you have it on, as it contains gems. If you touch the mask you must clean your hands.

• Change the Sharps Collector as soon as the contents reach the fill line.

• When removing a Sharps Collector always use the handles provided.

• Secure the lid to the Sharps Collector base correctly, an audible click will be heard once the lid is in place.

• Do not dispose of non-sharps waste in Sharps Collectors as this adds unnecessary cost to your waste disposal fees.

• Always remember to aim for Point of Use positioning.

• When placing a sharp into a Sharps Collector, place the sharp end in first. If using a Counter Balance or Next Generation Sharps Collector, you will still place the sharp end in first, but on a horizontal angle.

• Do not recap needles.

• Do not de-notch needles off syringes.

• If you see that a collector has been positioned unsafely please alert the relevant person in your department.
