ugusta is about to become the coroner capitol of the world, at least temporarily. One week from today (January 25), more than 100 coroners, deputy coroners and other law enforcement officials from around the southeast will convene at “Georgia Health Sciences Medical Center....at Georgia Regents University,” according to a January 10 GRU/GHSU press release. If that seems a little confusing, it’s not your imagination. Just think MCG. Although the symposium is not open to the public, it does stand to benefit each and every person in the Augusta area and beyond. For starters, says Augusta Richmond County Chief Deputy Coroner Mark Bowen, “We need to continually train, and this symposium is a great opportunity for that.” Bowen’s pre-forensic science background as a police officer is a huge asset when it comes to solving crimes. Although we would never want to be, someday you or I might be the unfortunate beneficiary of training like this symposium offers. As the District 2 director for the Georgia Coroners Association (GCA), Bowen provides training and support for coroners and deputy coroners in 32 counties. Additionally, GHSU’s Tissue Donor Services is co-hosting the event along with the GCA for a very simple reason: The symposium will help raise awareness about organ and tissue donations. “One tissue donor can enhance the lives of more than 50 people,” said Carl Eubanks, Director of Tissue Donor Services at GHS Medical Center. “Coroners work with families who’ve lost loved ones. If they can broach the subject of organ donation with the families they encounter, perhaps these families will choose to give the gift of life to another, and maybe experience a touch of hope during their loss.” Other presenters include Eric Emery, Medicolegal Operations Consultant for the National Transportation Safety Board, who will speak on mass fatalities and disaster victim recovery, marking the first time the NTSB has ever presented coroner training in Georgia; Joseph Scott Morgan, author of Blood Beneath My Feet: The Journey of a Southern Death Investigator. Morgan is also a criminal justice & forensics instructor at North Georgia College and State University and is regarded as one of the leading experts on coroner training in America; also, Dan Hillman, executive director of Child Enrichment, Inc., who will discuss how to recognize maltreatment of children; and Rev. Brennan Francois, a chaplain at Georgia Health Sciences Medical Center and a motivational speaker, who will talk about making a difference in the midst of tragedy. +
