The Medical College of Wisconsin is currently developing a Master of Science - Physician Associate (PA) program. The PA program has both clinical and didactic components and will focus on training academically minded PAs whose personal experience and attributes will enrich service to patients throughout the diverse communities we serve. The MCW PA program seeks individuals with strong critical thinking and professionalism skills who are committed to working as part of a healthcare team in a range of settings in Wisconsin’s communities and beyond. The program will offer an educational experience that will incorporate self-directed and case-based learning with small group work and simulations. Students will learn alongside medical, pharmacy and other future healthcare professionals and will be exposed early to clinical mentors and healthcare experiences.
According to 2022 salary data from the American Academy of Physician Associates (AAPA), PAs who graduated in the last three years obtained a median annual base salary of $119,000 or $65.88/hr, and often found careers quickly upon graduation. PAs can practice in every specialty area in any location and do not need additional certifications or degrees to change specialties, like nurses or doctors. Most PAs find work/life balance in that they can provide healthcare and be part of a team without being consistently on-call.
Master of Science in Anesthesia Program
The Master of Science in Anesthesia (MSA) program is the first and only program of its kind in Wisconsin that provides the education and training necessary for you to become a Certified Anesthesiologist Assistant (CAA). The 28-month program provides a high-quality experience through an interprofessional-focused curriculum and comprehensive clinical teaching. This approach, along with a small class size and low faculty-to-student ratio, supports you through all phases of development, from novice to expert.
Role of the CAA
Under the direction of an anesthesiologist physician, a CAA administers anesthesia in a supporting role similar to a Physician Associate. The demand for CAAs is ever-increasing due to a nationwide physician shortage. In addition, more and more states are passing legislation that allows licensed CAAs to practice as vital members of multidisciplinary healthcare teams.

MCW’s Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP) was created to address the national shortage of physician-scientists who can care for patients and conduct state-of-the-art health research. As an MD/PhD student, you will focus much of your effort pursuing new knowledge about the evidence-based delivery of patient care by conducting independent scientific investigation.
Each year, approximately ten students are enrolled in the program, and students typically complete the dual degree program within eight years. Since 2010, our MSTP has been continually funded by the National Institute of General Medical Sciences.
