crowns Crowns – The currency of Taste of New Zealand Crowns are the official currency of Taste of New Zealand and are used to buy dishes from the restaurants and drinks from the various vendors. One Crown is worth $1. Please note that restaurants and bars will not accept cash for tasting dishes or for drinks consumed at the event (with the exception of the VIP lounge). However, if you are purchasing products to be enjoyed at home you can use either Crowns or NZ dollars. Where do I get Crowns? Crowns are available for purchase direct from the Taste Bank or watch out for one of our roving Crown Sellers dressed in hot pink. How are Crowns purchased? Crowns are purchased in pouches of $10 or $20. Crowns may be bought with eftpos, credit card or cash. Crowns What if I have left over Crowns? Crowns cannot be redeemed for cash at the end of the event. Should you have any spare Crowns, use these to purchase goods to take home from one of the Exhibitors, pass on to friends who may be taking part in another Taste Session in 2011. A note on Alcohol: Drinks for consumption at the festival are sold by the glass only. Please do not open a bottle of alcohol at the festival as this conflicts with our arrangement with the Auckland District Police. You will be required to leave if found with an open bottle.

Meet the Chefs Over the next few pages we pay homage to the restaurants and chefs of the festival – and tell you a little about them... Rick Stein Rick Stein runs four restaurants in Padstow, UK including his famous Seafood Restaurant. He has written 11 cook-books, and is respected the world over for his TV series and documentaries. Famous for his love of fresh seafood, Rick joins us to share another passion of his, Malaysian cuisine, and is mixing this with great NZ produce at Taste of New Zealand.

Chef – Gary Rhodes Rhodes W1 Gary Rhodes is one of the superstars of British Cuisine. A total of 6 Michelin Stars, Gary’s restaurants include Rhodes 24 in London, Arcadian Rhodes on the P&O superliner, Cumberland Rhodes and Rhodes Calabash in Grenada. His TV appearances have been equally as successful with slots hosting MasterChef UK, appearances on Hell’s Kitchen, the Great British Menu and his own globe-trotting shows which started with Rhodes Around Britain and have taken him to India, China, the Carribean and Italy. Gary has regularly appeared at the Taste of London festival and we are delighted to host him as our special guest at Taste of New Zealand.

Chef – Ben Bayly The Grove Following jobs in Michelin starred restaurants in Europe Ben returned to New Zealand and now joins Michael Dearth at the Grove. Bayly is young, hungry and has experienced an illustrious career to date, giving him the confidence to not only carry on the esteemed reputation of The Grove, but to stamp his own unique food signature on its menu, picking up Metro’s Audi Restaurant of the Year Award two years running!

Chef – Justin Rimmer The Wharf Over the last twenty years Justin has worked in a number of Auckland’s Top establishments including: The Heritage Hotel, Pontoon Restaurant & Opium restaurant, One Tree Grill, Halo the Hilton Hotel. Rimmer now runs The Wharf Friday degustation evenings as well as various other high profile functions around the country.

Chef – Sid Saharawat Sidart Sid Sahrawat is one of New Zealand’s most exciting chefs, revered within the industry for his innovative and inspirational cooking. He has won a number of Lewisham Awards, including Most Innovative Chef and Outstanding Chef. At SIDART, Sid uses his famously precise technique to create delightfully edible art on a plate.

Chef – Mark Gregory Dine Aid World renowned kiwi chef Mark Gregory has been interested in food since the day he left school. His impressive, award-winning international cooking career has seen him at some of the world’s finest restaurants including One Aldwych Hotel in central London and he has been awarded with the title Meilleur Ouvrier – achieving French Master Chef status. Mark is also founder of the Dine Aid charity in New Zealand.

SHOW CHEFS Chef – Josh Emett Brought up on a farm in Hamilton, Josh discovered his passion for cooking as a child. He spent much of his time working on the farm and began cooking out of necessity. After much hard work Josh joined Gordon Ramsey in the three Michelin starred Restaurant Gordon Ramsay in Chelsea, he then spent the next 10 years working side-by-side with the world famous celebrity chef. Emett is now well known to most New Zealanders as judge on MasterChef New Zealand alongside Simon Gault and Ray McVinnie.

Chef – Warren Turnbull district dining New Zealand born, Warren Turnbull had his career epiphany the first time he walked into a kitchen, realizing he had at long last found his comfort zone. Two years on, Warren moved to London to further his knowledge and learn firsthand what he had so often heard about. He is now the owner and executive chef of award winning restaurants, Assiette, and District Dining in Sydney, Warren has recently opened a second District Dining in Britomart, Auckland.

Chef – Sergio Maglione Toto’ restaurant Sergio arrived in New Zealand 15 years ago with a background of cooking in seafood and pizza restaurants in Naples, Italy. Sergio bought Toto Italian Restaurant from his uncle in 2006. Under Sergio’s guidance Toto’ has become an Auckland institution.

Chef – Nick Honeyman Cru at Sale St Honeyman’s experience comes from his previous role at The French Café and European summer seasons cooking in France. Under his guidance the Dallows Restaurant at Sale St gained great critical acclaim. The new Cru Restaurant at Sale St will carry more of Honeyman’s flair in its cuisine – his restaurant launches straight after the Taste of New Zealand Festival.

Chef – Sanjeev Kumar Monsoon Poon Sanjeev’s career began at Claridges Hotel in New Delhi, before he worked in Dublin, then moved to New Zealand joining the original team at Monsoon Poon Wellington. SHOW CHEFS Chef – Nici Wickes Viva Food Critic & TV Chef Nici Wickes is a trained chef but she attributes her extensive knowledge of cooking and food to the tastes and experiences she has gained from her extensive worldwide travels. Nici is currently the presenter of food-travel series World Kitchen, and Viva’s eating out editor.

Chef – Michael Meredith Merediths Michael Meredith worked in some of Auckland’s most esteemed kitchens – Antoines, Vinnies and The Grove before opening his own establishment, Merediths, on Dominion Rd. Merediths is now constantly referred to as one of the top NZ fine dining restaurants where every detail is performed under the top chef’s guidance.

Chef – Makoto Tokuyama Cocoro Makoto Tokuyama has been executive chef of the award winning SOTO kitchen since it opened in 2004. He was trained at Nobu in London and while working at SOTO, his new style of Japanese cuisine has gained him an extensive following. Annabel Langbein The Free Range Cook Annabel Langbein is one of New Zealand’s most creative culinary figures. Since 1984, Annabel has worked as a food writer, presenter and consultant. Nadia Lim NZ MasterChef Cooking has always come naturally for Nadia and is where she loves to show her creativity. She is a registered dietician. Since winning NZ’s MasterChef she is now concentrating on writing her first cook book as well as doing cooking demonstrations and charity events.

Brett McGregor NZ MasterChef After successfully winning NZ MasterChef in 2010 Brett has been in a whirlwind of food demonstrations, TV gigs with Countdown supermarkets, writing a food column for New Idea and launching his first cook book Taste of a Traveller.

Chef – Jonny Schwass Restaurant Schwass Jonny Schwass takes a no-nonsense approach to cooking which has made him a big hit in the world of cuisine, overseas and at home. Chef – Tim Pickering The Farm at Cape Kidnapers New Zealander Tim Pickering only started cooking at age 23, but once he started there was no stopping. Working in both Japan and Canada Tim returned to work at The Farm. In his time as Head Chef at The Farm at Cape Kidnappers, the Relais & Chateaux lodge was named in the Conde Nast Traveler HOT LIST 2010 as Best for Food.

Chef – Sachie Sachie’s Kitchen Sachie is from Aichi, Japan but has been a Kiwi for well over a decade and believes that great food can instantly change our feelings for the better. Sachie is the mentor at Auckland-based cookery school Sachie’s Kitchen.

Chef – Michael Van de Elzen Molten Founder and Head Chef of Molten Restaurant, Michael is more recently known as driver and food innovator behind the popular TV series The Food Truck. Michael has picked up many awards for his efforts and is the author of the recently published The Molten Cookbook.
