Aapeli arrived in Jyväskylä with Jaakko Rusanen. In a town known for its teacher

education, they built the first harmoniums with their own hands and came up with the idea of starting a factory. As Aapeli wrote to his brother Antti:

education for our nation. It educates teachers for our schools, and we will send harmoniums to those schools – harmoniums with a sound as pure as the water in Lake Päijänne. Soon, children in schools across Finland will be singing in voices as bright as those of the birds in the sky.”

Harmonium Factory from where our story begins.

Ma ster builde

Aapeli Halonen Hello, my name is Aapeli Halonen. You are warmly welcome to tune up for your Jyväskylä dinner with me. In my time, I established a harmonium factory here in Jyväskylä. It was located opposite the railway station, right there. Today, the building houses Restaurant Harmooni, which looks after the history of my times. You will have dinner there later today – and it will not be just any old dinner. I will first lead you on a walk, during which we will tune up for your dinner by experiencing the influences of light and the history of Jyväskylä. We will be visiting four sites to tune up for your starter, middle course, main course and dessert. In addition, we will be making four choices that set the mood and tone for your dinner. The tour will end at Restaurant Harmooni.

Born 5 October 1863 in Lapinlahti, died 27 July 1928 in Jyväskylä

At the moment, we are in Church Park, the first site on your tour. Located in the middle of the park, the Jyväskylä City Church was completed in 1880. It was the first church where “Hoosianna”, a popular hymn, was sung in Finnish. At the time, the official language of Finland was Swedish, as a result of the history that the two countries share. The church was built in the middle of a marketplace, and the park continues to be a popular meeting place – which brings us back to the present moment: it is time for you to tune up for the first part of your dinner. Take a walk around the park, sit down on a bench for a moment and choose one of the following three moods – the one that speaks to you most strongly.

Which mood would you like to tune up your starter with? a) Beautiful harmonium music b) Spring in Church Park c) A romantic meeting in the park

always pleased with that particular requirement; in fact, I used to sing in a choir myself. The work of Cygnaeus to create educational opportunities for women in Finland was significant. It is also one of the reasons why our country has been a pioneer in equality. The first teacher training college in the country was the reason why my friend Jaakko Rusanen and I started our harmonium factory in Jyväskylä, which at the time was a small town of wooden houses. Not all of our harmoniums stayed here, however – we delivered them to schools around the country. I wonder how many morning assemblies at schools were

3. Kuokkala Bridge The next site on our tour is Kuokkala Bridge. It was not here in my time. When Finland began to industrialise in the second half of the 19th century, Jyväskylä continued to be a rural town, with some handicrafts and small-scale industry. Jyväskylä was industrialised in the early 20th century. For example, the Schauman plywood factory was founded in 1912. Our harmonium factory was established in 1910. And this beautifully lit Kuokkala Bridge was completed much later, in the late 1980s. From here, you have a view over Jyväsjärvi lake. You can also see Rantaraitti, a walking and cycle route that circles Jyväsjärvi lake. With its total length of 14 kilometers, it provides good exercise. Jyväsjärvi lake is a popular recreational area in the winter and has a long tour skating track, among other activities. My son Seppo and I liked fishing. We gave our catch to the employees. Fishing used to be my favourite hobby, offering peaceful moments in the busy life of a harmonium manufacturer. The peace and quiet of nature are important to us Finns, and the country has plenty of lakes. In fact, it is called the Land of the Thousand Lakes, as you may already have heard. Take a little walk by the shore. Have a closer look at the bridge, and listen to the lake. Finally, take a closer look at the statue of the man on the swing under the bridge, in the middle of it all. What is he telling you? It is time to tune up for

4. Lutakko Park It is time to come back from historical times to today. We are now in Lutakko Park in the Lutakko district. When Jyväskylä was founded in 1837, this peninsula was considerably smaller than it is today. Almost the whole of Lutakko was created when Jyväsjärvi lake was being filled. In fact, the word lutakko means muddy wetlands near a lake. Its meaning has provoked discussion from time to time, but I think it is perfectly appropriate for the area: the old wetlands have turned into the newest, most modern residential area in Jyväskylä – and lutakko refers to both of these. The story also has a midpoint, the era of Lutakko as a wood industry area. It was replaced by new residential buildings, and the area also has business premises, office buildings and cultural facilities as well as culturally and historically significant buildings. In addition, Lutakko still has buildings or parts of buildings that used to belong to plywood factories – as a memory of Ph
