Community Council board seeks new member
Ranch News is a non-for-profit newspaper published monthly by the DC Ranch Community Council to share timely and relevant information with residents. The publication seeks to build community by connecting neighbors through stories and pictures and to offer a product valuable to advertisers. Ranch News celebrates and perpetuates the values of the DC Ranch community. Every fall, the Community Council Board of Directors begins its search for passionate volunteers who would like to serve as a director. This year, Rich Puricelli is stepping down from the board after serving two years as treasurer and one as president. We thank him for his service and leadership over the past three years. The board is now searching for a resident to fill this vacancy on the seven-member board, beginning January 2014. The Community Councilʼs mission is to facilitate a connected and welcoming community that instills pride and a sense of belonging in every DC Ranch resident. The Community Council also sponsors and promotes programs and events that enable civic, cultural, educational, social, philanthropic, and recreational opportunities. It also operates the Desert Camp Community Center and The Homestead Community Center, publishes Ranch News, and manages DCRanch.com. Maintenance of DC Ranchʼs path and trail system also falls under the Community Council umbrella. The Community Council board members set and uphold the vision that guides all Community Council decisions, monitors the financial performance, adopts an annual budget, and hires and monitors performance of an executive director. The board holds six regular meetings a year and provides opportunities for additional subcommittee work. Each board member is asked to serve a three-year term. Interested candidates are invited to submit an application to Community Council Executive Director Chris Irish. Applications can be found on DCRanch. com. Fiber optics lines installed in several neighborhoods
Spotlight on Ranch Association
Century Link is replacing underground copper lines with fiber optics throughout DC Ranch. This project will provide residents with greater Internet and entertainment capabilities. The first stage of the project began in the northern sections of County Club village along Desert Camp Drive. The construction will take place in the rightof-ways so crews can dig around existing junction boxes. Once the fiber is connected in these locations, Century Link representatives will reach out to individual residents to explain fiber optic solutions that are now available. The Ranch Association will provide more information about the project to all residents within the construction areas as it becomes available.
Several residents were elected as NVMs last fall. Some positions will need to be filled as their one-year term comes up for renewal.
Neighborhood month lauds a successful year of resident involvement The Ranch Association is grateful for the dozens of residents throughout DC Ranch who serve as Neighborhood Voting Members (NVMs). For the first time in DC Ranch history, all 43 neighborhoods were represented this year by residents who stepped up to give their time on behalf of their neighborhood. What’s more, the 2013-2014 Ranch Association Board of Directors was elected with 100 percent participation by the NVMs. As the fall season approaches, the Ranch Association is preparing for the annual NVM elections. This group of well-informed residents serves a one-year term and provides feedback to the Ranch Association on behalf of the neighborhood in which they live. NVMs are vital to the success of DC Ranch. The Ranch Association wants to ensure it maintains a high standard of living and provides quality customer service for each resident. NVMs help accomplish that goal by informing the board and staff about issues or concerns that pertain to their specific neighborhood. These leaders also serve as resident delegates to elect the board of directors and decide other community
matters requiring a vote of resident membership. NVMs receive training from the Ranch Association to effectively execute their roles and responsibilities throughout their term. The Ranch Association welcomed Tom Wright to the position of community inspector. Wright will work directly with residents and vendors on the modification process and be responsible for transfer and Tom Wright, disclosure inspections. Wright Community Inspector previously worked with the Covenant Commission in a similar capacity. The community inspector’s goals are to maintain DC Ranch’s esteemed architectural lineage and preserve the unique desert surroundings.
Labor Day office hours for DC Ranch facilities
In observance of Labor Day on Monday, Sept. 2, The Ranch Offices on Market Street and The Homestead Community Center will be closed. Desert Camp Community Center will be open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. that day. Residents will have key-fob access to the restrooms at The Homestead. Regular business hours will resume on Tuesday, Sept. 3.
Overseeding planned for September, October
The lawns at Desert Camp and The Homestead Community Centers will be overseeded Sept. The Homestead Community Center 23-Oct. 25. Residents are asked to keep off the grass during these dates to allow for successful germination.
Yard maintenance tips from Landscape Manager Gary Whitener, II
Though the weather is still very warm in September, it is a good time to start preparing your yard for the fall growing season. Reduce mowing heights and watering days for the lawn as you get closer to the end of the month to prepare for overseeding. Refrain from fertilizing the grass except in areas that summer grass has not grown. August rains are likely to promote weed growth which should be pulled when they are small to prevent spreading. Finally, begin planting trees and shrubs at the end of September.

The golden arches join DC Ranch Crossing
After opening several McDonald’s restaurants around the Valley, north Scottsdale residents Dorothy Stingley and husband Wayne are excited to showcase their newest location. With architectural elements matching the style of DC Ranch Crossing, the new restaurant will blend nicely into the community. Dorothy tells Ranch News about her plans for the eatery that’s expected to open on Oct. 31.
Q: Welcome to the neighborhood, Dorothy. We understand that you and your husband have a legacy with McDonald’s that spans decades. Can you elaborate? A: We opened our first McDonald’s restaurant in Wayne’s hometown of Chicago in 1981, and operated restaurants there until our move to the Valley in 1993. We’ve grown our business from four to 12 restaurants in the past 20 years. Most of all, we are extremely proud of our work with the Ronald McDonald House and its Scholarship Programs. Q: What inspired you to open your next McDonald’s location in DC Ranch? A: Opening this new restaurant right in our neighborhood is a dream come true. We have lived in Pinnacle Peak since 1994. We live, shop, eat, worship, and have raised our children in north Scottsdale. Now I’ll be able to meet my friends for a bite in less than five minutes from my home and office. Q: Can you share the amenities you have planned for DC Ranch Crossing? A: We’ve designed a modern, bistro-style setting, featuring a double drive-through (two lanes for faster service), with a dining room, patio seating, and state-of-the-art food prep and service areas. Q: Where will the new location fit in DC Ranch Crossing? How will this affect drive thru traffic? A: The new location will face the south side of the shopping center with a separate pad, across from Pulse Fitness and Luster Nail & Spa. Drive-thru traffic will exit on Pima Road or Trailside View.
Q: What’s new at McDonald’s? A: If you haven’t been in a while, there are several new healthy options. For starters, the Egg White Delight is made with freshly grilled egg whites and extra lean Canadian bacon. Another healthy indulgence is the McCafe Blueberry Pomegranate Smoothie made with fresh berries and low-fat yogurt. Q: What is your all-time favorite item on the menu? A: Wayne loves hotcakes and sausage or a spicy McChicken sandwich with fries or side salad (must have croutons). I prefer an Egg White Delight McMuffin and coffee, or a cheeseburger, fries and Diet Coke. Q: Dorothy, can you share plans for your grand opening celebration? A: It’s going to be a lot of fun. In 1996, DMB Associates, Inc. broke ground with the vision of DC Ranch as a “living community.” What makes the community “alive” is the thoughtful planning and careful consideration of how the elements of design merge to create a neighborhood that fits together. As Vernon Swaback, apprentice to Frank Lloyd Wright and master planner of the community noted, “A living community is never finished.” One home builder has taken that vision to heart. Anthony Salcito, co-owner of Salcito Custom Homes, has literally watched the concept of DC Ranch take shape to become the thriving community that it is today.

“The neighborhood gets better with the inclusion and addition of marquee buildings and businesses, mature landscaping and trees, and the community’s commitment to maintaining the path and trail system,” said Salcito, whose father began the architectural company in 1978. Salcito has built houses in DC Ranch since the community broke ground. He and his family have also called it their home for the past 15 years. “It’s a safe, practical, and enjoyable place to raise my family and run my business,” said Salcito. Sixteen years ago, however, Salcito remembers DC Ranch as a dusty landscape where the budding community was substantially different than today. “Back when DC Ranch was first being built, the area was less populated and felt more spread out,” Salcito recalled. “As more neighborhoods were developed, the sense of connectivity grew. Now DC Ranch feels fully integrated between the homes, community centers, and commercial districts.” It is evident that Swaback and Salcito have a common architectural philosophy: to maintain history after creating it. “There isn’t much more to develop in DC Ranch,” Salcito said. “At this stage, I think the focus of the community is the comradery and connectivity to what is here. And that will become stronger with the addition of more residents. I’m sure it will endure over the next 16 years.” —Brighid Tomasik

Ballet Arizona’s 34th season highlighted by classics, innovations, and a new home
Artistic Director Ib Andersen announces Ballet Arizona’s 2013-2014 season presenting six remarkable programs, including full-length favorites and Arizona premieres. The season will open in October with the highly anticipated return of the storybook tale of “Cinderella” which premiered to sold-out audiences in 2011. Performed at Symphony Hall with The Phoenix Symphony, “Cinderella” embodies an ultra-lush score in the retelling of this popular fairytale. In addition, Ballet Arizona will unveil its new home, Dorrance Theatre, with a celebratory grand opening including a gala and free community day. The $10 million facility, which is more than ten times the size of Ballet Arizona’s former home, is designed to be the center for dance in Phoenix. The holiday season begins in December with the return of Arizona’s biggest holiday event, “The Nutcracker” at Symphony Hall with The Phoenix Symphony for 19 performances. It is a fun-filled, magical adventure for the whole family. The highlight of the performance season is the world premiere of “La Bayadère,” a classic newly-staged by Andersen and set in royal India of the past. “La Bayadère” is a dramatic ballet of eternal love, mystery, fate, vengeance, and justice. Around Scottsdale The Scottsdale City Council recently approved a test period, from Sept. 1 to May 31, for motorized tour companies to offer guided jeep rides along a 3.6 mile route near Granite Mountain. No provision exists for these motorized tours to be permitted beyond this nine-month trial period. The city purchased the Granite Mountain land from the state, which allowed motorized vehicles. “My favorite memories of the parties are just seeing everyone and their children getting together and reconnecting,” said Walberg. But it’s not just twice a year that the neighbors come together. On any given evening, the Park and Manor Homes neighborhood is alive with families enjoying their parks in the center of the community. “I see many of my neighbors outside at least four to five times per week. We usually meet in the park in our neighborhood and just chat and catch up,” she said. Walberg takes her two Westies on regular walks that often turn into social outings for the dogs, too. “If someone is at the park on a regular basis I have met them,” she said. “And I also know their dogs.” Getting to know her neighbors was one of Walberg’s main priorities when she moved to DC Ranch in 2006. Desert Parks neighborhoods were still under development which made it easy to connect with the first few residents. “A small group of us found ourselves trying to put forth our best efforts as the builder was winding down and the parcel finished completion,” said Walberg. “That’s when I got involved with the NVM program and decided to apply.”

The family-friendly community within Desert Parks village is known for two great traditions– the chili cookout in the spring and the Halloween party in the fall. “Our neighborhood is very social,” said Marla Walberg, a Neighborhood Voting Member (NVM) who has lived in the community for seven years. Like many of the residents, Walberg looks forward to the festive yearly gatherings that fill the main neighborhood park with residents. Everyone brings their favorite dish to the potluck style celebrations that sometimes last all evening.

Ready, set, treasure hunt! In anticipation of Neighborhood Day on Saturday, Sept. 21, the Community Council is hosting a community-wide treasure hunt. Each week, from now until Neighborhood Day, a clue will be revealed through “This Week on The Ranch,” the weekly email to residents and mailbox posting that will lead to a specific location in DC Ranch. Residents must take a photo of that spot and show it to the team at Desert Camp Community Center in exchange for a special token. Please limit one token per family for each clue. On Neighborhood Day, residents will bring their tokens in exchange for keys, but only one person will hold the golden key that opens up the grand prize. “We hope residents will discover new and interesting areas of the community that they may have never seen. This includes the commercial districts, too,” said Event and Program Manager Gabi Enriquez. So put those detective caps on and keep an eye out for the four clues.
