asana athletes: positive examples for others I’m always impressed with ASANA’s continued growth and the diverse athletes it attracts. As an organization, you originally decided to go your own way; to do your own thing that was more than just softball. In the past several years you’ve added football and a 5K run to your well-established ASANA World Series. Doing your own thing has also included a generous spirit. In 2015 your Peanut Foundation was formed to help ASANA members with scholarships, grants and expenses for other activities the foundation board members deemed necessary. That generosity of spirit also extends beyond your members. Just this year proceeds from your 5K run will be donated to Athlete Ally to supports its education and advocacy work promoting equality in sports. This year’s featured athlete, Nikol Piñon-Salvador is a true inspiration for those who occasionally feel like life has given them more than they can handle. An amputee at age 18, she has created a wonderfully rich life for herself by never giving up and never offering excuses as to why she can’t do something. Just last year I would have said that the organization is filled with strong, powerful and determined women like Nikol. But since your decision to update your documents to promote gender inclusion, I want to honor your power to say exactly how you want to be identified and addressed. I will use words that don’t continue to force you into an old paradigm. The competition at your World Series tournaments reveals you as fierce competitors. As a group you are strong, powerful and determined individuals, positive examples to others of who they can become and what they can accomplish. And for that, we are all grateful!
