Cesare Brandi considered Apulia a marvellous archaic place. Every traveller feels how rich is its antiquity, walking through the alleys of historic centres, and keeping in his memory colours never seen so intense before: the deep blue of the sea, the green of olive trees and vineyards, the ruby red of ripe tomatoes, the gold of wheat, the pure white of milk. Yet, it is not just nature to hit the imagination of those who explore these places. Maybe the great cathedrals or the shining silvers inside churches or even the red and black ceramics of Magna Greece and their stories or even the legends that tie this corner of the South to heroes and gods. The discovery of Apulia starts from the Sacred Mountain, the Gargano.

At Monte Sant’Angelo everything develops around the archangel Michael in a sanctuary with mystical atmospheres. In the cathedrals of Lucera and of Troia (the only in the world to have a rose window with eleven petals) the astonishment before human genius prevails.

Apulia is rich of beautiful places, such as Castel del Monte. The construction, commissioned

by Frederick II, overlooks an upland shrouded in mystery and can be numbered among the Norman-Swabian-Aragonese castles arranged along the Adriatic coast, such as those in Barletta, Mola di Bari and Monopoli. Along the sea, there are cathedrals dedicated to saints who came from afar as that in Trani, the ancient Duomo in Molfetta and the Basilica of St Nicholas in Bari. Bitonto represents the flow of time, with ancient evidences of the Peucetii civilisation, until the more recent expression of Romanesque with its majestic cathedral.

The journey goes on towards the Trulli of Alberobello, passing through the modern ceramics of Grottaglie and the ancient ones kept in Taranto, at the National Archaeological Museum. Eventually, the traveller finds the Salento, dominated by Lecce, embellished

A14, or on the more spectacular Strada Statale ‘Adriatica’, towards Bitonto from North or South, will cherish the unique panorama of the intense green of the olive tree groves and the white reflection of the stone standing out against the intense blue of the sky over the changing blue of the sea.

The beauty of this city and its territory, its enviable geographic position, a connection between the coast and the hills of the hinterland have made it, since Neolithic, a privileged place for the settlement of a cabin village that can be discovered through the remains of the necropolis and of the relics, evidence of a complex and well-organised civilisation, dedicated to agriculture. If you want to travel back in time, you will easily recognise Medieval features in the monumental Romanesque Cathedral and in the labyrinth of alleys of the historical centre full of arches, hidden towers, palaces and churches built over the span of centuries.

Historical events affected the urban development and the local citizens’ life, alike to peoples of the Land of Bari, with wars, foreign dominations, revolutions and wise governments. Memories of stone and colours The historic centre of Bitonto is a labyrinth of history, tastes and tradition, whose discovery is a real dive into the past, which from Piazza Cavour to Via Rogadeo twists and turns until the Cathedral, wonderful example of Apulian Romanesque style, revealing anecdotes and stories.

P

orta Baresana is the main access door to the ancient city, included into the long defensive wall demolished over the time. On its architrave, a copy of a wooden table (predella) is placed, depicting the twelve patron saints of the city. On a higher level, the statue of the Patroness, the Madonna Immaculate, dominates the top of the monument. On the right side, a slab reports the pastoral visit of Pope John Paul II, on 26th of February 1984. Next to Porta Baresana, the impressive Angevin Tower stands impressive. The Tower, or Maschio Angioino, is one of the surviving examples of the city’s defensive system, originally formed by a defensive wall with 28 towers and five city accesses doors. Its construction, realised by the Angevin dinasty, dates back to the second half of the XIV century. Over the centuries, the Tower was chaired by the castellan and the garrison troops. It was used as prison and,

since 1828, as an olive oil mill. The building has a circular plan, with a diameter of 16 meters and a height of 24 meters. Today the Tower, after a significant restoration, houses the Civic Gallery of Contemporary Art. Once crossed Porta Baresana, you will be in Piazza Cavour, dominated by Palazzo Sylos Calò. It was built starting from 1529, commissioned by the noble Giovanni Sylos. People are fascinated by the Renaissance loggia of the first floor, marvellous background of the square. Today the building houses the National Gallery of Puglia ‘Girolamo and Rosaria Devanna’. The Gallery is full of numerous works by the great Neapolitan and southern artists, such as Pietro Negroni, the ‘Maestro dell’Annuncio ai Pastori’ (Master of the Annunciation to the Shepherds), Vaccaro, Giaquinto, Bardellino, Solimena and Luca Giordano.

Fracanzano, Poussin, Giaquinto, De Nittis, Stella and Speranza stand out.

est pieces from Bologna, Genoa, Marche, Veneto, Rome and by artists as Lanfranco, Maratta, Baciccio, Beinaschi and Mario de’ Fiori. The collection constitutes, especially for the seventeenth and the eighteenth century, a remarkable anthology and an important tool to study Italian art.

You can also admire works by artists such as Poussin, François Verdier, van Swanewelt and, entering the twentieth century, by Beatrice Wood and Joseph Stella, which lend the collection an international resonance.

Proceeding along Via Gian Donato Rogadeo, you will find the Church of S. Maria del Suffragio, better known as Chiesa del Purgatorio. Erected in the XVII cen., the church deserves a stop in order to admire its façade enriched with a gloomy decoration with skulls, human skeletons and purgative souls, with clear references to death. Finally, the walk through alleys and archways leads you to the city’s most valuable treasure: the Cathedral. The Cathedral is the cultural, social and religious centre of the city, whose foundation is attested in 1080. Several noteworthy elements can be retrieved on the side facing the square, such as the esaforato (a corridor with a series of six-light windows), supported by capitals ‘a stampella’ (typical Romanesque capital with a trapezoidal shape). Each capital is decorated with an animal or a plant, imaginary or real, whose symbolism can be found in medieval bestiaries.

Standing on the square you can see the Gloria dell’Immacolata, a column built to thank the Virgin Mary for having rescued the city from an earthquake in 1731. On the main portal of the Cathedral you can see scenes of the Nativity and the Descent of Jesus to the Limbo. In the upper part you will admire the majestic rose window. The interior of the Cathedral is structured into three naves, whose central one is larger than the aisles. The most valuable work is the Ambo, realised in 1229 by Nicola,

priest and master, and used to read the Scriptures. On the ambo the evangelists’ symbols are shown and at its back a slab is visible, depicting four characters, most notably the emperor Frederick II of Swabia.

During the excavations in the late Nineties of the XX century, the monumental early Pre-Christian Basilica came to light. The central nave’s floor dates back to VI cen. and shows peacocks, symbols of immortality. The excavation works unearthed rests of Greek-Roman house masonry, prior to the basilica. The nave ends with the mosaic of the Griffin, realised in the XI century with polychrome tiles and representing the allegory of Christ’s dual nature, true man and true God. The walk leads you, for a change of route, outside the ancient city. Returning to piazza Cavour and proceeding along via Matteotti, you will reach the Archaeological Museum of via Mazzini. The numerous funeral items showed are rich in pottery and metals, which allow us to trace the economic and social development of the Peucetii civilization and to know their traditions and customs. In the first room, objects are arranged chronologically, permitting to reconstruct the evolution and influence of Greek civilization on the local crafts.

We then shift from objects with geometric decoration, distinctive of the Peucetii production, to black-glazed pottery with red figures, typical of the Magna-Graecia civilization. In the second room, the showcases keep belts, scrapers and mortars, as a proof of the Peucetii warrior culture.

In the third room there are jewelleries, necklaces, loom weights and large amphorae decorated with women bodies dressed in chitons (a traditional ancient Greek clothing) found in a single semi-chamber tomb belonging to a rich matron. The Museum is enriched with a collection of paintings of the XX century, most notably the works by Nicola Tullo.

CATHEDRAL ARCHAEOLOGICAL EXCAVATIONS OF THE CATHEDRAL Under the majestic Romanesque cathedral, there is a whole early Christian basilica.

ARCHAEOLOGICAL MUSEUM It is composed by two floors. The ground floor houses the Archaeological Museum and the preunification Archive. On the first floor there is the post-unification Archive and the Ninive Art Gallery, opened in 2005 and containing forty paintings

From cloister to cloister Just walking around, you will easily recognise Renaissance palaces and patios, realised starting from the XV century, which distinguish the unique aspect of this city full of history.

S

tarting from via Giandonato Rogadeo, previously called dei Mercanti (merchants) because of the presence of several shops up to ten years ago, you can find Palazzo Rogadeo, built by the namesake family at the beginning of the XIV century. The palace is one of the symbols of the city, since it includes the church of Sant’Anna, also called Sedile, the place where the nobles met for important issues, starting from 1551. In this same year, the people of Bitonto, with the help of the bishop Cornelio Musso, managed to ransom the city from feudalism with the payment of 66.000 ducats, a rare case in the feudal Europe of the time. Today the palace houses the city library “Eustachio Rogadeo”. Its rooms conserve the collection ‘Cuonzo-Sivilli’, consisting of XIX and XX century paintings, and the collection of photographs by Luigi Ghirri. The library has about 60.000 volumes, including an-

cient parchments, Cinquecentine and Seicentine (books printed during the centuries 1500 and 1600), and an extraordinary illuminated Evangeliary of the XIII century. The library today is a hi-tech open space, with scheduled events, presentations of books, workshops for children and training courses. The library is at the centre of a urban space where you can stop for a culinary break in various restaurants around Piazza Cattedrale and eat traditional local products. Proceeding on via Gian Donato Rogadeo, taking via Planelli on the right and going toward via Ambrosi, you will find the church of San Domenico. Whereas, on the left, descending on via Planelli, you can see the noble Palazzo Sylos-Vulpano, an admirable example of a fifteenth century civil construction. The church of San Domenico was built starting from 1258, when the Dominican Bishop Gerio Pancrazio wanted the foundation of a convent of his reli10

gious order. The portal imitates the Romanesque style. During the Baroque period the church was decorated with stuccoes. The chapel, dedicated to San Domenico in Soriano, has a rich cheering symbolism. The altar dazzles with his virtuosity of colours, pictures, stuccoes and decorations made by local craftsmen. Here, you can admire the seventeenth-century statues called Misteri, taken into procession on the morning of Good Friday. In 1809, the city hall entrusted the church to the Brotherhood of the Holy Rosary, while the convent was assigned a civil use as town hall. Today its cloister, after a project of redevelopment, houses the ‘Galleria del Gusto’, a cafeteria with a take-away formula, that welcomes you with local products and traditional dishes. An important construction of the Apulian Renaissance architectural panorama is the Palazzo Sylos-Vulpano, dating back to 1445. Its portal, of clear Catalan inspiration, was thought as a real triumph arch, rich and sober at the same time. As you cross it, the squared courtyard will leave you breathless with the sumptuous loggia decorated according to the Florentine Renaissance taste and perceived as a great allegory. The intention was to glorify civic and moral virtues of Vulpanos, comparing their progenitors to Roman heroes (Scipio, Hannibal, Antoninus Pius, Nero), to gods (Neptune, Mars, Apollo) and to Greek myths (Orpheus). Recently, a portion of a Roman road surface was discovered, as well as a chamber magnificently frescoed

with allegories on the different types of love, which will fascinate you like a Catullus’s poem. From via Planelli, the inebriating scent of focaccia di patate (a traditional recipe of focaccia with the addition of potatoes in the dough) and taralli leads you to piazza Minerva, where you can find the most ancient wood-burning masonry oven of the city and the church of San Francesco la Scarpa. The church stands on the former acropolis used first by Peuceti and then by Romans. The new complex was built at the expenses of Sergio Bove, an aristocrat of Bitonto, during the first decade of the XVI cen. Since then, it has undergone a lot of changes. Only the chorus and the main façade keep their structure in AngevinGothic style. The high churchyard and a majestic staircase precede the rectangular portal with an elegant Gothic triple lancet windows above it, one of the few examples in Apulia. The façade is flanked by a seventeenth century belfry with three orders and with an onion bulb towering on the top, as if it was a minaret visible from all points of the city. The church is rich of precious sixteenth-century altars and baroque sculptures. The apse is very fascinating with a visible fresco showing San Francesco d’Assisi receiving stigmata. Next to the entrance of the church, there are the roof gardens (Giardini Pensili), charming places for resting and meditation. During the summer season they are used as outdoor theatre, with a striking panorama of Lama Balice, old riverbed of the stream Tifris.

exhibitions, book presentations, guided tours and small concerts.

itonto’s gastronomy strives for the conservation of the flavours of the past. It results from the combination of a cuisine that values the features of the surrounding territory and exalts the flavours and colours typical of the Mediterranean. The traditional Apulian dishes worthy to be remembered are: favette e cicorie (a pureé of fava beans with chicories), riso, patate e cozze (rice, potatoes and mussels), orecchiette e cime di rape (pasta and a local variety of turnips), calzone di cipolla (onions or leeks pie), friselle (a hard bread) and cartellate (pastries fried and soaked in cooked grapes must). However, the element that ties these dishes and enhances their flavour is the Extra Virgin Olive Oil. A real Yellow Gold and the pride of this Apulian town. Its value gave the name to a variety of olive worldwide known as Cima di Bitonto. Produced as indicated by Mother Earth, blonde juice of the most an-

cient fruit, it was used in the past to tone athletes’ bodies and to anoint kings. Often it was thought to possess miraculous powers and was used during sacred functions.

Olive oil will guide you along the way to Bitonto’s countryside. Leaving Bitonto toward Palombaio and Mariotto (fractions far respectively 7 and 11 km from the town) you can visit the oil mills of Azienda Agricola Cuonzo and Feudo di Verità and taste the amazing oil with a spicy scent, typical quality of the variety Cima di Bitonto. Before returning to the city, we suggest you to stop at Cantina Vini San Barbato, a wine company in Mariotto on via Traetta n°50, where precious grapes are worked to produce an excellent wine, inspired to the tradition.

Once back in Bitonto, you can have the opportunity to visit the Antico frantoio oleario Mancazzo overlooking the Lama Balice, along the defensive walls, and to admire the place where olive oil is produced next 14

BOCCONOTTO Bocconotto is a typical sweet of Bitonto stuffed with ricotta and a little sugared dough. It has been for centuries the sweet of the peasants who, forced to live in tight and narrow spaces, adapted their

culinary needs to their own situation.

The small size of bocconotto, the possibility be stored for many days, as well as its high nutritional degree, made it a typical product of poor cooking.

MUSEUM OF AGRICULTURAL CIVILIZATION “SPAZI DELLA MEMORIA�

The museum, set in the Church of San Giorgio, houses a collection of thousands of object built during the XIX and XX centuries.

These objects were of everyday usage and symbolise a simple society which marked 15

the time through the tillage of soil and simple things. The collection shows the cycles of oil, wine, wheat and the ancient crafts.

to a huge sedimentary boulder. You just have to immerse yourself in the Ancient Centre and visit the countless masonry ovens, some dating back to Middle Ages, characterized by the traditional wood-burning cooking with olive trunks, where you can taste excellent bread, tasty focaccia or crispy taralli made with extra virgin olive oil. You can choose the Antico Forno Carlucci at piazza Minerva, near the church of San Francesco La Scarpa, the Forno di San Giovanni on via Corte Martino n° 10 or the Forno di Sant’Andrea on via Saponieri. You can combine these culinary delicacies with a good glass of handmade beer, sampling the beers produced in some breweries of the city. The brewery ‘I Peuceti’, on VIII Trav.

Vico Durazzo n° 2/4, whose production of its brands is based on taste, olfaction and sight. The brewery ‹Cavour›, resulted from an idea of three beer-lovers boys, set on via Publio Virgilio Marone, next to the marvellous Ancient Centre.

Finally, on the ancient via Cela, just outside the city, there is Borgo Bontà, a social farm where everything is produced following a short production chain, such as their handmade beer ‘Na Beer’. What’s better than a sweet moment, enjoying the famous Bocconotti? Bocconotto is a circular sweet,

with a little sugar dough and filled with ricotta cheese. The story tells that bocconotto has been invented by the Benedictine nuns of the monastery of Santa Maria delle Vergini.

Their small size, the possibility to store them for many days and their high nutritional level, have made bocconotti one of the flagships of the Southern culinary tradition for centuries.

You can enjoy it in all the pastry shops of Bitonto, but surely you will find it on via Sedile n° 7, near the Angevin Tower, in the pastry shop Boccabò, which also prepares pizza di ricotta (a sweet pie made with ricotta) and cannoli. Or, you can rediscover all the authentic taste of a secret recipe handed down from generation to generation at the bakery Bocconotto on via Perrese, outside the Ancient Centre. As already mentioned, you can find bocconotto in every pastry shops’ window, sometimes with other traditional sweets, like the Sospiro. You can find all these at the pastry shop Salierno on via Dante, close to the city park. For lunch or dinner there are many restaurants, trattoria and pizzerias, waiting for inebriating you with a path of genuine aromas and flavours in beautiful places, especially in the Ancient Centre.

itonto’s Wood is an example of conifer reforestation on the Murgia’s plateau. From the 1920s, numerous Murgia’s areas, such as the Foresta Mercadante in Cassano Murge, have undergone a process to prevent the soil erosion and restore substances - nitrogen in primis – to foster the rebirth of downy oaks. This sensation of wellness and freedom will lead you to live a moment suspended between nature and rural architecture.

Bitonto’s Wood, about 20 km far from the urban centre, can be reached taking the S.P. 89. After Mariotto, at the km 17,00, you have to follow the signs ‘Bosco’ or ‘Lamione’ and then proceed until the access area to the wood. It dates back to the 1950s and has an extention of 50 hectares. The pines stand out on a land crossed by a crack called Lama della Città, the same name of a close farm house of the end of 1800s.

In the wide countryside, the numerous agricultural and agro-tourist companies, involved in the circuit of educational farm houses, will lead you through a ‘hedonist’ itinerary made of traditional wine and food and absolute relax, particularly suitable after a restful walk in the nature. Many Apulian agricultural companies cultivate and treat various local products, producing delicacies for all the tastes. The ancient farm houses and the experiences of the past, which in them can be re-experienced, will connect you back to the land and to yourself, through the revalue of knowledge and flavours. Rare experiences can be lived in these farm houses. oing along the Poligonale of Bitonto (a perfect ring visible from the satellite which seems to have inspired the designers of the Grande Raccordo Anulare in Rome) you will be surrounded by nature. You can follow this route by foot or by bike arriving at via Burrone, a section of Lama Balice. Along the pleasant descent you will observe characteristic Apulian anthropic signs, such as hay barns, dry stone walls, sighting towers and caves. In the surrounding nature, you will also notice spontaneous vegetation (holm oaks, Macedonian oaks, strawberry trees, mastic) and traces of the common agricultural landscape (olive trees, vines, almond trees). A part of the wide countryside of Bitonto is included in the National Park of Alta Murgia, established in 2004. The Murgia area maintains traces of transhumance, wide areas deprived from woods and marked by countless stone

structures. For instance, in the area of Villa Rogadeo, an example is the farm house complex of Pietre Tagliate (lit. trans. Cut Stones), so called for the presence of huge rocks ‘cut’ by meteoric waters according to a chemical process defined karstification.

Along the path leading to Villa Rogadeo, you will find the suggestive Jazzo delle Ficocche, a real natural amphitheatre made of jazzi (a typical uncovered fold used by shepherds during transhumance) and of other shapes of eroded karstic rocks.

It will not be strange to hear the call of a Lesser Kestrel or of a Common Kestrel, animals dear to the emperor Frederick II of Swabia. From Pietre Tagliate, the path leads to an embankment which covers the channel of Acquedotto Pugliese, a huge public waterworks system built between 1906 and 1915, the biggest in Europe. On this expanse you can see a house built in 1222 by Pietro Castanea and succeeded 20

REGIONAL PARK “LAMA BALICE” It is the first natural park that can be called “urban” for its proximity to the city centres of Bari and Bitonto. With an extension of 495 hectares, and a length of about 37 kilometres, the park of Lama Balice

stands in continuity with the National Park of “Alta Murgia”.

CHURCH OF THE “ANNUNZIATA” The church, example of religious rural architecture, dates back to the Middle Ages and has undergone numerous renovation works until the whole XIX century. Inside, you can find important late-renaissance frescoes with devotional and popular themes: the Nativity, the Cross and the Last Judgement.

reproduced on the façade. Villa Cuonzo is a typical example of simple structure used as a pied à terre by farmers and breeders.

Today, it is an agricultural company where you can take a lunch break and taste the famous oil of the city.

Our agreeable countryside was anciently inhabited until the Saracens’ raids during the XI century. Then, our farmhouses disappeared, leaving as only proof of their existance the small out-buildings of worship: rural churches. Some of these buildings

can be seen along the way of Lama Balice.

For example, on the road that leads to the airport, you may run into the well preserved church of the Annunziata. Inside the church, you can admire a rich cycle of frescoes dating to the seventeenth century, made by local artists. Your stroll in the green will take you to Torre Santa Croce, not far from the crack of the Lama, a medieval rural church dated between the tenth and eleventh centuries, made of dry limestone in a very similar technique used 23

for the construction of trulli. The church is flanked by a massive square tower that is part of the defensive system of lookouts widespread on the territory. A building wrapped in a halo of mystery is the church of Torre San Eustachio, at the border between Bitonto and Giovinazzo. Inside the church, most of the frescoes are ruined, but your attention will be drawn by Greek letters and by the outline of a ship. Journey from Mother Earth? Esoteric symbols?

The Holy Week At Easter, emotions, traditions, tales, for an experience interwoven, since ancient times, in a historical and cultural itinerary to make you live moments rich of pathos.

n the Good Friday, preceding the Holy Week and the Palm Sunday, the procession of Desolata starts from the churchyard of our Cathedral.

The nineteenth-century statue of the Virgin Mary with her black dress, her heart pierced by a dress sword, her face full of grief, emblem of a mother looking for her son, proceeds among the crowd. The candid voices of primary school children sing in background, with heartfelt participation and slow pace, the song A Maria Desolata. People swarm throughout the Ancient Centre on the Maundy Thursday in an incessant pilgrimage to various churches. After the Mass of the Lord’s Supper and the Stripping of the altars, the sacred places fall in darkness and silence and the Altars of Repose, commonly called Sepulchres, are prepared. During the whole night, between Thursday and Friday, funeral marches performed by local bands break the si-

lence of the houses and the sleep of people with mournful melodies. As the Holy Friday dawns, the procession of the Mysteries starts from the church and former convent of San Domenico, arranged for three centuries by the Archconfraternity of the Holy Rosary. In a slow pace among the silent streets, the members of brotherhoods take into procession the eight wooden images of various periods (from 1600 to 1900) supported on the shoulders of carriers dressed with stiffelio, a particular black tailcoat.

The solemn procession is accompanied by the traditional funeral marches played by city bands and resulting from the excellent scores written by Bitonto’s musicians and orchestra leaders: Bellezza, Carelli and Delle Cese, to name but a few. On the evening of the Holy Friday, the so-called Processione di Gala (procession of gala), with an ancient taste dating back to the Counter-Reformation period and arranged 24

by the archconfraternity of Santa Maria del Suffragio, leaves from the seventeenthcentury church of Pugatorio. In the alleys of the Ancient Centre, in a surreal silence, the procession proceeds with a wave-like movement and a slowness symbolising, in the heart of everyone, the last moments of Christ’s life. The nineteenth-century golden cradle, dazzling with a lying ‘Dead Christ’, is the first figure to march in the procession.

It is then followed by the poignant image of the Virgin Addolorata, enlightened from hundreds of candles, whose pallid face is streaked by tears. Afterward, the march continues with the artistic Flower Trophy, containing the Holy Wood silver reliquary of the XIX century, which safeguards fragments of Christ’s Cross.

The incense scent fills the streets and takes people back to distant lands and ancient times. The emotion is much when an authentic copy of the Holy Shroud, realised in Turin in 1646, appears among

the crowd. On Easter Sunday, the atmosphere has already changed and the cities’ tables are decorated for the Easter lunch with tasty dishes like the benedetto, made with boiled eggs, brawn, sweet and salted ricotta cheese, oranges and lemons. After the forty days of Lent, a period of fasting from meat, the first and second courses are typical dishes of meat and chops with tomato sauce, the ragù, besides the inevitable lamb. Pastry shops set their windows with scarcelle, a traditional Easter cake made of sugar and flour, in which whole hard-boiled eggs are placed. The following day is Easter Monday, an even more festive day when the whole city pours out to the surrounding countryside. A popular destination of this day is Bitonto’s Wood, a suitable place, in close contact with nature, to eat the verdetto, prepared with the leftovers of the Easter lunch, in an atmosphere of happiness and carefreeness. Faith and folklore The baroque coloured illuminations, the wine and food scents, the cheerful symphony of musical bands, the fireworks lighting up the starry sky, the ladies and knights who take you to a unique adventure that will charm you.

ou can still feel the far voices of the crowd broken by the noise of horses’ hooves which once animated the whole fair area, so ancient to be mentioned by Boccaccio in his Decameron.

San Leone’s fair is arranged on 6th of April or on the first Sunday of April. A crowd of merchants liven up the day of many citizens arranging stands with every kind of goods: flowers, plants, animals, clothes, rustic furniture, etc. If you want to capture the explosion of a unique celebration of its kind, then the celebration in honour to Maria Ss. Immacolata, patroness of the city, is the right one. The whole celebration occurs in May, during days full of faith and embellished by marvellous Apulian illuminations. These days are enriched by a Historical Parade, involving hundreds of actors in costume in search of the noble past of the city during the eighteenth-century, and by breathless fireworks that keep the

spectators’ noses toward the sky. Fascinating sounds are played by city bands, but also classical music concerts, national and international guests make the celebration a moment of joy and folklore. The whole historic feast commemorates the battle of 26th May 1734, which had Bitonto as its battlefield. Austrian and Spanish armies competed for the domination of the Southern Italy in a battle just outside of the city. The Austrian army was defeated by the Spanish army led by general Montemar who, as habit, promised his soldiers the plundering of Bitonto. The historic feast celebrates the miracle of the Holy Virgin who appeared to the Spanish commander threatening him not to touch the city, ‘pupil of her eyes’.

The magnificent seventeenth-century statue of the Immaculate Virgin, who is carried in procession, is attributed to the sculptor Angelo Filippo Altieri, from Altamura. On the third Sunday of October, the feast of 28

through the streets, together with farmers, peasants, carriages, horses and armies. The parade ends at Porta Baresana, where it is staged the evocative historical moment of the delivery of the city keys.

CELEBRATION OF “SANTI MEDICI” The religious celebration occurs on 26th of September, whereas the ‘outdoor’ feast with the holy procession of the Saints’ statues is scheduled on each third Sunday of October.

On this day, the famous holy procession called Intorciata discloses, to devotees and not, the characteristic features of this celebration, such as the smoke from big candles, the devotees praising the virtues of the two Saints with folk songs, the backward march of some worshippers, staring toward the Miracle-workers. The holy procession starts from the Basilica entitled to the Saints, early in the morning followed by a large crowd of devotees. The eighteencentury statues of the two Holy Unmercenaries, are taken throughout the whole city from dawn to dusk. At their return to the Basilica, a feasting crowd is waiting for them to attend the High Mass, celebrated by the Bishop. The worship of Santi Medici has traces dating back to the XIII-XIV centuries. The current Basilica is one of the most

important religious centres in Puglia and in the south of Italy. Inside, the Basilica has a magnificent section full of pilgrims’ ex-voto. These works reproduce the healed worshippers’ body parts. Many of these are made of silver and are organised on great panels within the Sanctuary or along the corridors of the service rooms. Here, we can also find boards decorated with drawings expressing the painful event followed by the miracle, represented by the appearance of the Saints. An important event of these celebration is the Fair. This exhibition involves an infinity of stands that offer various goods to a stream of people taking advantage to buy and taste typical products, such as sausages, focaccia, celeries, olives in calce (olives prepared with lime to take off their bitter taste), all served with a good glass of wine.

Taking the tree-lined Via Repubblica, you will find in the heart of shopping. You can find also many optical shops to be exclusive also with accessories. Excitement, fun, passion, theatre, art and culture in a unique mix with a calendar of events scheduled throughout the year. The most prestigious cultural centre of the city, with a program of events covering the whole year, is the theatre Tommaso Traetta. Established in 1838, it counts on one of the most interesting and lively theatre seasons within Bari’s urban area, ranging from prose to poetry and from music to ballet. The cultural offer is furtherly enriched by the Parco delle Arti (www.parcodellearti.it). Numerous music festivals are scheduled throughout the year as the Traetta Opera Festival, dedicated to the composer Tommaso Traetta, born in Bitonto and lived in Europe during the 18th century. The festival is structured in concert performances characterized by important personalities and the presence of many Japanese artists (www.traettafestival.it). The Bitonto Blues Festival, which is conquering the heart of an always wider international audience (www.bitontobluesfestival.it). Jazz lovers cannot miss the Beat Onto Jazz Festival (www.beatontojazz.com) with internationally famous artists. The Bitonto Opera Festival (www.bitontoperafestival. org), dedicated to people enthusiastic of opera, is carried out by the Coro Lirico CittĂ di Bitonto (Opera Chorus City of Bitonto) composed by young people of Bitonto who approached to the fascinating world of opera. In addition, other festivals are dedicated to Poetry, Literature, Cinema, Comics, Music Writers, Folk music and Popular songs. An event that cannot be missed is Cortili Aperti (Open Courtyards) (www. adsi.it), one of the most prestigious events

of Apulia. The event occurs every year late in May and simultaneously with the major cities of culture of the Italian peninsula. In Bitonto over fifty public and private buildings of historical and artistic importance are open on this day. These buildings are divided into three different itineraries: in the Ancient Centre, in the XIX century part of the city and in its surroundings. The aim is to discover and admire the artistic and cultural treasures of the city, taken on tour by over 400 students-guides. Another important opportunity to visit the hidden treasures of the city is the Puglia Open Days, on each summer Saturday, with the special opening of historic sites and guided tours (www.viaggiareinpuglia.it). Whereas, if you want to dance at the rhythm of dance music, a few kilometres far from Bitonto, in the village of Palombaio, you can find the disco Chiascia, benchmark for many cities in the surroundings. An ideally link is given by the connection between Parco delle Arti and the fairground Miragica Terra di Giganti in Molfetta, 15 km far from Bitonto. The park is dedicated to families and young people, with fantastic scenography and numerous attractions, from the classic carousel for children to the most thrilling attractions for the bravest, from the theme sleepless nights to the funniest shows. BITONTO CITY OF FESTIVALS The city of Festivals is music (of all kinds), literature, theatre, poetry and art for over 70 days of events. Hundreds of artists, national and international guests, some tens thousands of spectators per year gathering in tens of historical and evocative places, outdoor and indoor.

THEATRE TRAETTA The city theatre is dedicated to Tommaso Traetta.

Born in Bitonto in 1727, he was a great composer of the Neapolitan school, author of masterpieces of sacred music and more secular works.

Widely regarded as the precursor of melodrama, he taught in many European cities, including St. Petersburg and Venice, where he died in 1779.

Fior d’Olivi Few kilometres that connect, in a short time, the cities of Bitonto, Terlizzi and Giovinazzo, to discover itineraries that recall the splendours of antiquity and dive into the clear waters of the Adriatic.

I

t is an archaic-looking and rough expanse of olive trees, however authentic. An ancient plant that is the keeper of early stories, such as the indescribable beauty of the Mediterranean civilization.

This is the tight bound between Bitonto, Terlizzi and Giovinazzo. Once you leave Bitonto, on the ancient way Via Appia, your first stop will be the homeland of flowers: Terlizzi. Here, in the numerous greenhouses or at the new flowers market, it is wonderful to wander among the colours and perfumes of carnations, roses, dahlias and tulips. You can also buy decorative and kitchen items result of the pottery tradition handed down since the early XIX century.

In the city centre, all the roads radially converge to the Cathedral of San Michele Arcangelo, re-built in 1783. The Duomo preserves, of the ancient cathedral, only the rich and magnificent portal by Anseramo from Trani, now included within the ora-

tory of the church of SS. Rosario. The Torre Maggiore (Main Tower) stands and dominates the city centre and is the surviving evidence of the Norman Castle. Its 31 meters of height and its majestic clock on the eastern façade have made the tower symbol of the city. Going down on Corso Vittorio Emanuele your attention will be drawn by the majestic Palazzo Baronale De Gemmis, built in the XVIII cen. Near the palace, there is the entrance to the church of Santa Maria la Nova, commissioned in the XVI century by the Franciscan friars and known for its artistic relevance. Other noteworthy palaces are Palazzo De PaÚ Antonelli and Palazzo De Napoli, location of the town Art Gallery dedicated to Michele De Napoli, painter from Terlizzi. You can taste grilled meat with a glass of good red wine in the many butchers in the historical centre.

As all Apulian cities, Terlizzi has its Patron Saint festivity, called Festa Maggiore (Main 34

The carriage is a wooden construction of

22 metres high, shaped like a Bell Tower, pushed by the arms of 60 men and led by 4 helmsmen.

The Marian icon is placed on the carriage.

It crosses the main streets of the city to reach the Cathedral.

GIOVINAZZO During the first half of August, Giovinazzo waits you for the summer appointment with the local tradition, a mixture of genuine tastes, agricultural and maritime history.

Everything spiced with music, happiness and hospitality. In 2012, the importance of this event had an international 35

echo thanks to the services on the BBC channel and the visit of the English journalist Tasmin Smith. It is a unique opportunity to preserve and value the ancient tastes of a piece of Puglia through the same traditional dishes that in the past could be found on our grandparents’ tables.

SOVERETO Feast), which is celebrated on the second Sunday of August. Just outside the urban centre, have a few minutes of relax walking through the mystical atmosphere of the magnificent medieval village of Sovereto, a few kilometres far from the city. The entire village is imbued with history and legend for its position on the ancient Via AppiaTraiana and for the presence of a Hospitale run by the Knights of the Order of Saint John of Jerusalem. The Sacred Byzantineinspired icon of SS. Maria di Sovereto, venerated at the little Sanctuary of the 12th century, is said to have been mysteriously found in a cave. The legend suggests that its paternity, competed between Bitonto and Terlizzi, was established by the fate.

The icon was placed on a carriage at the junction between the two towns and led by two oxen from the rival cities. According to the legend, the ox from Terlizzi blinded the one from Bitonto with a horn, bringing the carriage toward its town. Moving to the coast, you can enjoy the enchantment offered by the small fortified town of Giovinazzo. If you visit it by night, the lights illuminate the white walls of the old town and glisten in the endless blue of the sea.

The west-oriented circular tower and the so-called Fortino (Fort) built in 1488, an Aragonese bastion said u’ Tammurre (local dialect for drum), refer to the ancient times.

The access into the historical centre, in a maze of narrow streets, offers glimpses and breath-taking panoramas given by the so called Arco di Traiano (Arch of Trajan).

So, venturing into the historical centre, you can visit several palaces of the Renaissance nobility, including Palazzo Saraceno on Via Gentile. The Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta (The Virgin of the Assumption) stands above the houses of the ancient centre. It was built in 1113, in Apulian Romanesque style. Standing behind the cathedral there is Palazzo Ducale, built in 1659.

Among Medieval churches, that of Spirito Santo (Holy Spirit) is worthy of note, built in 1395 with distinctive aligned domes. On the Sunday after 18th of August, you cannot miss the Patron Saint feast dedicated to Madonna di Corsignano (www.patronidipuglia.it). itonto is a Municipality included in the Metropolitan area of Bari and is the closest city to the international airport ‘Karol Wojtyla’. It is interesting to look around and discover a rich territory.

Although outside the urban boundaries, you cannot miss a quick visit to Castel del Monte, a Unesco World Heritage. It is easy to get there from Bitonto. By car, you have to follow the SP 231 toward Foggia and, after Ruvo di Puglia, take the Minervino Murge - Castel del Monte exit. By public transport, you can catch a train at ‘Bari Nord’ station, get off at Andria and take a direct bus toward Castel del Monte.

Before reaching the destination, on a high ground you can catch a sight of the compact mass of the castle with the mysterious octagonal shape. The eight towers and the internal courtyard are also octagonal. The number eight recurs in the rooms on the ground and first floor. The true function of 37

this particular architecture is still unknown.

There are many hypotheses, but after centuries the scholars have not won yet the challenge to understand the brilliant mind of its customer, Frederick II of Swabia. CASTEL DEL MONTE are the most popular during Summer however, during the whole year, one of the most famous destination of the region is certainly Alberobello which is listed among Unesco World Heritage thanks to its trulli (a trullo is a traditional Apulian dry stone hut witha conical roof). Surrounded by an aura of village with fairies and elves, the city is characterized by the typical stone constructions spread throughout the Itria valley. The monumental area of Alberobello is composed of the quarters Monti and Aia Piccola. oing along the SS 96 you arrive at Altamura, a city founded by the Emperor Frederick II of Swabia.

Starting from Porta Bari, you can still see remains of the Medieval splendour. You will be surprised by the beautiful XVI century loggia of Palazzo De Angelis-Viti, residence of the noble family ‘del Balzo-Orsini’.

Continuing along Corso Federico II, you will find the church of San Nicola dei Greci, rebuilt in the XVI century whose portal is decorated with scenes from the Old and New Testament. Arriving at piazza Duomo, you will admire the marvellous Cathedral, wanted by Frederick II of Swabia in 1232, an example of Apulian Romanesque.

Among the twisting narrow alleys, there is a succession of the particular claustri (small squares delimited by buildings), Arabic meeting places (there are about 200 in the old city). Around 25th of April, a great historical Medieval revival is celebrated, 41

The scent of the famous Altamura’s Bread leads you to the many wood-burning ovens bakeries where you can enjoy this gastronomic delicacy, beside the delicious focaccia baked on stone. Being in Altamura, you will be intrigued by the Uomo di Altamura (Man of Altamura), the first full skeleton of a prehistoric hominid, preserved in the tours centre Lamalunga (www.comune.altamura.ba.it).

Among suggestive wheat fields and olive groves, your journey continues to Gravina di Puglia, a city whose name refers to the Murgian karst phenomena of authentic beauty. Numerous caves were used both as places of worship and houses with defensive function. Further, on the edge of a ravine, you can see the cathedral dedicated to Santa Maria Assunta, from which you can enjoy an exclusive view over the bell tower of the Medieval castle. Walking down on viale Orsini, you will be amazed by the Museum Pomarici Santomasi, which houses paintings from the XVII and XVIII centuries, coins, vintage clothes and weapons. ful bridge over the stream Gravina, a fantastic double-arched waterworks built by the Orsini in the XVIII century.

Passing the border with Basilicata, after few kilometres you will arrive at the city of Matera, which will give you a unique experience. Famous throughout the world as the City of Stones, Matera is a Unesco World Heritage Site and the European Capital of Culture in 2019.

On the top of the city, there is the magnificent Romanesque cathedral, built in 1230, dedicated to Madonna della Bruna whose Patron Feast is celebrated on 2nd of July, with the famous cavalieri della bruna (the brown knights) and the rite of the distruzione del carro (destruction of the carriage).

You will dive into a maze of narrow streets, climbing between caves and ancient dwellings, surrounded by historical and cultural charm. There are numerous cultural events arranged inside some caves which 43

The rocky churches, with traces of monastic settlement and used as places of pilgrimage, are worthy to be visited for their rude but ancient beauty.
