Improved service is on the cards Ferry operator Hovertravel has announced that it is developing its HoverCare initiative - the service for passengers with reduced mobility or who need extra help with their journey - by introducing new customer cards that they say will help provide a more tailored and personalised service. The HoverCare card will also act as identification for discounted HoverCare for on-going travel.

Neil Chapman, MD at Hovertravel, says: “It's been over 12 months since we introduced the HoverCare initiative and we have run comprehensive training across all our teams to improve accessibility for all.

“In our most recent wave of training we are learning Dementia Awareness and even some basic Makaton”.

Hovertravel customers will be able to request a HoverCare card which will indicate whether they require help with luggage, are a lip reader, whether they need to be seated, or would like help boarding the hovercraft. If a customer wishes, the HoverCare card can also show that the holder has reduced mobility, autism, dementia, reduced vision or impaired hearing.

Carers can request a HoverCare Card if

they are regularly travelling and may gain free of charge travel when they travel whilst providing one-to-one care to a person who has reduced mobility or who is entitled to disability care.

Neil explains: “By showing the HoverCare Card to our staff, customers will receive any extra assistance they may need

without having to ask, and can be confident that our teams are on hand to ensure every journey is the best it can be”.

Cards can be requested in the terminals on production of the appropriate identification, or at one of Hovertravel's special coffee morning sessions where customers can sign up for their card and find out the assistance that is available to them. Forthcoming coffee mornings are scheduled for Monday 19th November and Wednesday 5th December from 10am – 12noon.

Rolling out the welcome mat for wildlife With wildlife under increasing threat from our modern way of life, home-owners are being encouraged to do their bit for the environment by encouraging threatened species into their gardens.

Helping this process along, housebuilder Barratt Homes in partnership with the RSPB has published a new consumer guide to making domestic gardens wildlife friendly.

Written by wildlife experts from the RSPB, the guide is packed with hints and tips on how to boost the wildlife in your outdoor space.

The guide, called 'Bringing Your Garden to Life' is available for free download, and gives guidance on the basics of creating a wildlife garden such as providing food and water, making sure wildlife can move between gardens, and giving shelter so that animals can stay safe and raise their young.

With a shocking 60% of wildlife species in the UK in decline over the past 50 years, and with 31% declining strongly, it's vital for everyone to play a part in halting and

reversing this trend, and Barratt Homes and the RSPB say this is the reason they have collaborated in launching the guide.

It includes an example of how a simple wildlife friendly garden could look, complete with features such as a deadwood pile, hedgehog highway, and bat and bird boxes together with a hiding place.

The guide also gives examples of common wildlife-friendly features that people can easily install in their gardens, such as planting wildflower turf, adding in a scented garden to attract bumblebees, using native hedgerows and installing water butts and compost bins.

Mike Clarke, the RSPB's chief executive, said: “Our gardens can be wonderful places to relax and escape the world, and with a little thought and effort they can also play a vital role in providing a much-needed haven for wildlife. This is important because nature needs our gardens as once familiar species are being seen and heard less in our towns

and countryside”.

The guide lists the best plants to feature in your garden and includes such common favourites as honeysuckle, holly, dogwood, lavender and rosemary.

It also advises on ones to avoid, such as invasive, non-native species including water hyacinth, Japanese rose and Russian vine, which pose one of the greatest threats to the natural world, and cost the UK tax payer a whopping £1.7bn a year in compensation for the damage they do.

Barratt MD Jon Green said: “The new guide is a fantastic resource for anyone looking to bring their garden to life by making it wildlife-friendly. We all want to see wildlife looked after, which is why we're working with the RSPB to give nature a home on our developments.”

Barratt is currently building new homes on the Isle of Wight at St George's Gate in Shide and Hawthorn Meadows in Whippingham.

Girl Power: volunteers needed to inspire a new generation Dozens of girls on the Island are said to be missing out on opportunities for adventure and the chance to try out new activities - simply because there aren't enough volunteers to run Girlguiding units here.

That's why Girlguiding Isle of Wight used the opportunity of the International Day of the Girl Child on October 11th to make an appeal for more volunteers to join, and help inspire and empower the next generation of girls and young women across the Island.

As the leading charity for girls and young women, Girlguiding offers girls a space to build their confidence, have adventures, develop their skills and have fun. Earlier this year the charity unveiled a revamped programme of activities and badges, bringing everything up to date and creating a unique and extensive choice of activities which reflects the diversity of girls and modern life in the 21st century. New badges include Entrepreneur, Inventing, Navigator and Self-care.

Girlguiding IW has more than 60 units

across the Island, and members have recently been trying out some of the new themed activities, while several units travelled to Wembley arena in October for 'Big Gig' an amazing girl-only concert.

Lesley Clifford joint Island Commissioners said, “We want to give more girls and young women the chance to join Rainbows, Brownies, Guides or Rangers - but for this to happen we need more people to volunteer”.

As to what skills might be needed, Shirley Saunders, joint Island Commissioner explains: “One of the most important things is just to be yourself. No matter what skills, interests or experience you have, we can find a role for you, and you can give whatever time you're able to. All you need is enthusiasm and a willingness to laugh and have fun”.

Meanwhile, one volunteer, Emma, who has recently moved to the Island, said, “I read on a local website that Girlguiding IW was in need of volunteers and thought, why not?

It was the best decision I ever made. I never

realised it would be so much fun and I've made a fantastic group of friends among the other volunteers. It has been such a privilege to witness how the girls who have come into Guiding grow so much in confidence during the time they're with you. We've been on trips, played games - the cricket was so much fun - welcomed our local MP's PA to our meeting for Parliament Week and joined in with other units for all-Island events.

There ís always plenty of variety!”

And as proof of how it's keeping up with the times, Girlguiding also recently launched #InspireGirls, a multi-channel campaign featuring films on social media and starring members from the charity.

Hallowe'en horror at Wicked Nights event Brand new horror event, Wicked Nights, made its home at Blackgang Chine in the weeks surrounding Hallowe'en this year. It encompassed several different events, from funfair classic the ghost train to a magician, contortionist and a live action tour, The Cursed Mill.

The tour included sudden loud noises, strobe lighting, audio

and visual effects, darkness, close encounters and ghastly odours, and was not for the faint hearted.

Sports teams and work colleagues were challenged to walk through the trail of terror with heart monitors, to see who were the toughest team.

'Phenomenal' Beer and buses The Classic Island Beer, Buses and Walks event recently ran for a fifth time and it's organisers have hailed it as “phenomenal”.

Despite the event being haunted by rain and dark clouds, it was attended and enjoyed by many when it returned to the Island in the middle of October for its annual ride.

Co-founder of Beer and Buses, Tim Marshall, said: “The feedback has been phenomenal, lots of really kind comments, which was unexpected as we started off with a major headache as a ferry broke down, so we had to reroute some of the buses. I thought we were going to get a lot of people saying it was chaotic because of that and the numbers of people attending but it’s been really well received.

“I’ve never seen so many people at Newport Quay, there were thousands, and people just took it in their stride. Even on the Sunday, when the weather wasn’t on our side, people were still sitting on the open top buses. Just phenomenal.

“We’ll be back next year as everyone seems to like it and the pubs like it, so we see no reason why we wouldn’t.”

Blooming marvellous!

Green-fingered parishioners in St Helens have reaped the rewards of their horticultural efforts with a prestigious South East England in Bloom Award.

St Helens Parish Council received the award and commemorative plaque for the standards of local community gardens, as well as the contribution made by local residences to the appearance of the village, and the efforts of the Parish Council to invest resources for maintaining community spaces.

Parish Chair Joe Robertson said “The award reflects the efforts of the local community to ensure the village is welcoming to visitors, as well as attractive to all of us who are fortunate to live and grow up here”.

Vice Chair John Coleman paid tribute to the unique sense of

community in St Helens, which has organised efforts such as bulb planting with local school pupils, to commemorate the centenary of the end of World War 1, and the Christmas Celebrations.

“This award is well deserved to all involved!” he said.

The Parish Council, with the local Church, Community Centre, Historical Society, and school have already created a living cross outside the Community Centre, and are planning a special dedication event this month.

Cllr Robertson concluded: “We're grateful for the efforts of the Horticultural Society, and other local groups and individuals, whose efforts have enabled the Village to be recognised by this Award”.

Drive less, to see more Four Island businesses have had cause for celebration after receiving a funding boost from the Isle of Wight Council to support sustainable transport.

The award of up to ÂŁ10,000 for projects stems from the launch of the Sustainable Transport Innovation Grant Fund in July 2018, when the council invited organisations to submit funding applications to help them deliver their own innovative sustainable transport projects.

The successful applicants are now pressing on with a range of initiatives, including a new cycle hire operation and a 'Slow Travel' Guide.

Congratulating the winners, Cabinet member for infrastructure and transport, Councillor Ian Ward said he was looking forward to seeing how these exciting projects would use the grant to make their ideas a reality – and encourage residents and visitors to drive less, and see more of the Island.

Among the winners of this year's grant is CycleWight, which has devised a project to explore ways of using the extensive Rights of Way network on the Island as a means of better connecting communities, and providing access to schools and workplaces. Working with landowners and user groups,

the project will survey the Island's footpath network to identify any that may in the future be able to accommodate a wider range of users.

Also a winner was Island firm Routefifty7 in Shanklin, which already runs a bike hire business from Lower Hyde. Its new project will create a pop-up bike hire hub based at the Shanklin Esplanade, which it is hoped will tap into a growing market of new and novice cyclists. The funding will help to promote short, easy, flat rides along the revetment to Sandown Pier and back, using part of the Red Squirrel Trail. It will also link up with local businesses along the route, providing discounts and offers to customers.

director, said he believed the pop-up - launched last month - would also reinvigorate a neglected part of Shanklin, raise the profile of the bay area and impact revenue coming in to the area.

Another winner was Visit Isle of Wight, for its project to create seven route itineraries for Island exploration, focusing on the popular concept of 'Slow Travel' The aim is to bring together information about walking, cycling, 'off the beaten track', landscape, wildlife, Island food, attractions and accommodation into one, digital home.

And it was good news too for IM23, a project that will create an online journey planner for consumers, incorporating all the available options for travelling on and around the Island. The journey planner will also add to a database of travel information that will help policy makers to better understand the type and frequency of journey being made on the Island.

All the projects are being supported by the Isle of Wight Council's Access Fund for Sustainable Travel programme, using funding that was secured competitively from the Department for Transport. All the successful grant applicants will also provide 100% match funding towards carrying out their projects.

Hobby turned into business After a varied career in plumbing, catering and with the YHA, Andy Fortune decided to turn his woodturning hobby into a fulltime job.

He established the Mulberry Tree Wood Turnery in 2013 - supported and encouraged by his wife Nikki, and with backing from the Government's Enterprise Allowance Scheme - in a small sub-let unit in Northwood. But business progressed so well that he moved to Arreton Barns for four years, before taking on his current larger premises in Porchfield Business Park.

Following a selection process in 2014, Andy was delighted to be accepted for membership of the Register of Professional Turners which is supported by the Worshipful Company of Turners

in London. Through the RPT, his latest project is the making of small replica bells from timber salvaged during this year’s renovation of the bells of St. Paul’s Cathedral. He also carries out bespoke work and makes his own bowls, platters and hollow forms from locallysourced timber, which can be purchased from his gallery.

Andy also offers a wide range of beginner and intermediate woodturning courses, for which he has had excellent reviews on his Facebook and Tripadvisor pages.

Through his shop he also sells a range of turning tools, equipment, finishing products and locally- sourced hardwood timber blanks and boards, and he's the main Isle of Wight agent for Record Power, Robert Sorby and Chestnut Finishes.

Treasure trove for antiques lovers Once a storehouse for coins and notes, the former Lloyds Bank in Yarmouth is now a repository for treasures of a different kind – captivating antiques. Displaying everything from lovely pieces of furniture, to jewellery, silver, and cut glass, paintings and maritime antiques, Bank House Antiques Emporium really does have something for everyone – including some great ideas for Christmas presents and unusual stocking fillers.

The former bank manager’s office is now the 'rummage room' where visitors can find interesting bits for under a fiver, and there's also a 'cubby hole' dedicated to gorgeous fabrics and textiles. At the other end of the

scale, the former bank vault is home to the more expensive jewellery, silver and cut glass antiques - some with prices of over £1,000.

The emporium is owned by Rolina and Robert Massey who have been in the antique business for almost four decades, ran a shop in Holland for 15 years, and then traded for many years at antique fairs.

Returning to her shop-based roots, Rolina says she loves creating eye-catching displays, but also enjoys featuring new items on their Facebook page Bank House Antiques Emporium.

The shop is open Tuesday to Saturday 10am-5pm, Sundays 10am-4pm, and Bank Holidays from 11am-4pm.

Soft Milk Chocolate & Ricotta Doughnuts Supplied by Smoking Lobster

Ingredients

Ingredients

3 sheets gelatine 170 grams 70% dark chocolate 200 ml milk pinch sea salt 300 ml double cream

250 grams ricotta 4 eggs 100 grams flour 2 Tsp baking powder 35 grams sugar 1 vanilla pod pinch of sea salt

1. Soak gelatine in cold water.

2. Melt chocolate in mixing bowl over hot water.

3. Bring milk to the boil then add to melted chocolate with the gelatine and salt, leave to cool whip double cream then fold into chocolate mixture once cooled.

4. Pour mix into silicone moulds and freeze, once frozen take out of moulds and leave in fridge to defrost.

1. Beat ricotta in mixer, add vanilla & eggs and mix until mixture is smooth, then add rest of ingredients.

1. Deep fry small balls of the mixture until golden brown.

2. Sprinkle with sugar and serve.

Cheers to Victoria of Wight!

Those expert craft brewers at Island Brewery have come up with another brand new ale – this time, exclusively brewed for Wightlink to celebrate the arrival of its state-of-the-art hybrid energy ferry, Victoria of Wight.

The ale, also named Victoria of Wight, was developed by the local brewers in consultation with the ferry company and the resulting 3.8% light golden, easy-drinking bottled ale is now available to purchase

onboard Wightlink's ferries as well as at its Camber Cafe in Portsmouth.

John Nicholson, the chairman of the Isle of Wight Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) branch, took part in an official tasting event at the Royal Victoria Yacht Club in Fishbourne, and declared that he was delighted with this latest creation from Island Brewery.

“Victoria of Wight has a refreshing taste

and aroma which is enhanced by the British Cascade and Bramling Cross hops” he said.

“These provide a touch of citrus which is complimented by a slightly malty and bitter feel on the palate. It's a great addition to Wightlink's Taste the Wight range and in my view, a very fitting way to welcome Victoria of Wight to the fleet!”

Chris Mousley, sales director at Island Brewery, commented: “We have supplied Wightlink with our locally bottled beer for some time and were very excited when they suggested the idea of a special ale to celebrate the arrival of Victoria of Wight”.

Meanwhile, Simon Lewis, head of retail at Wightlink, said the ale would be a great addition to the range of local products offered through its Taste the Wight outlets.

“We thoroughly enjoyed working with the team at Island Brewery to create this special ale and hope our customers enjoy it as much as we do”.

Spiced Toffee Apple Traybake Supplied by Richmonds Bakery

700g bramley apples, peeled and roughly chopped 260g light muscovado sugar 225g butter 375g self- raising flour 2tsp baking powder 2tsp cinnamon 2tsp mixed spice 3 eggs

1. Preheat the oven to 160°C. Line and grease a large traybake tin.

2. Put the apples in a pan on a low heat until they are well-cooked and mash to a coarse purĂŠe.

Allow to cool.

3. Sieve the muscovado sugar into a large mixing bowl and then add the rest of the cake ingredients with the cooled apple.

4. Beat together until just mixed.

Spread evenly in tin and bake for 25mins until golden brown.

5. Allow to cool.

For the buttercream: 250g butter 550g icing sugar, sieved Toffee sauce

For the icing: 1. Gently soften the butter by placing it in a microwave for 15seconds.

2. Use an electric whisk to beat the butter until pale in colour.

3. Add in the sieved icing sugar, and 4tbsp of toffee sauce.

4. Whisk until incorporated. If too thick then add 1tbsp of milk and whisk until desired consistency is reached.

5. Gently spread the icing over the top of the cake, and finally drizzle some toffee sauce over the top.

6. Enjoy!
