Pressing on regardless ■ “As we were saying before we were so rudely interrupted ...” The Local Paper and Melbourne Observer newspapers are back in print, after an unplanned 17-issue hiatus due to COVID restrictions. The Local Paper is published in local editions that serve 37 local government areas in and around Melbourne. Our company, Local Media, has a 52year heritage since the Melbourne Observer was first published on September 14, 1969. Advertisers with packages will have their schedules changed with adjusted end dates, so they obtain the full value of their purchases. We plan six more issues prior to Christmas: Nov. 10, 17, 24, Dec. 1, 8 and 15. The first 2022 issue is timed for February 2.

■ The Australian War Memorial will commemorate Remembrance Day 2021 with the National Ceremony tomorrow (Thu.) commencing at 10.45am in the Memorial’s Captain Reg Saunders Courtyard. The Remembrance Day National Ceremony will be broadcast live on the ABC television and radio. The broadcast will also be live-streamed on the Memorial’s Facebook page, and will be available for viewing on ABC iView. The National Ceremony features traditional elements including one minute’s silence at 11am, the laying of wreaths by invited dignitaries and a Commemorative Address. November 11 also marks the 80th anniversary of the Australian War Memorial which opened in Canberra in 1941.

■ The Local Government Inspectorate’s comprehensive review into personal interest returns of 650 councillors found 332 did not complete their returns in compliance with the Local Government Act. The project – looking at 4600 councillor returns between October 2016 and February 2020 - involved a high-level review of councillor personal interest returns from 61 councils and a detailed review of councillors from 17 councils.

■ Australia Post says Christmas parcels should be sent by Monday December 13 for Parcel Post, and Monday December 20 for Express Post. Christmas cards should be sent by Thursday December 16, and customers sending overseas are encouraged to do so as soon as possible.

● Reg Gorman ■ Actor Reg Gorman passed away at the age of 89. His agent Joanna Milosz said on social media: “It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Reg Gorman, absolute legend of the Australian preforming arts. A true gentleman, a kind, gentle, generous man. He will be greatly missed.” Reg Gorman is best remembered for his ongoing role as ‘Jack the Barman’ in The Sullivans and his roles in Neighbours which gained him international recognition. Reg Gorman was born in 1932 and began stage work in vaudeville and revues in the 1950s. He made his television debut as an extra in an opera at the ABC studios in 1956. Reg recalled one camera in the centre of the studio and four sets built in a circle around the huge solitary swivelling camera. Reg clutching a spear had to run from set to set – such was “live” black-and-white television in the early days. Reg appeared in hundreds of television programs over the years. My first memory of seeing him on television was as a wood chopper in an episode of Skippy. Little did I know that in later life we would become friends and appearing together in a touring comedy show. His television credits included, Homicide, The Henderson Kids, Blue Heelers and Fergus McPhail. Reg was in films such as Ned Kelly, Dalkeith, The Cup and many more. His musical comedy stage credits included Sweet Charity, Promises Promises and The Bells are Ringing. He met Judith Roberts when they were both cast in How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying and they married in 1963. Reg toured his one man show Hanging Onto Vaudeville for several years and he was the comedy support act on The Diana Trask Show. I played straight man to his comedy routines in the touring show The Great Comedy Teams. Reg Gorman always wanted to make people laugh and did that successfully in his long career. In 2011 Reg Gorman won best actor at the St Kilda Film Festival for his role of ‘Joe’ in the short film Punch Drunk. Reg and Judith had three children Kate, Charmaine and Karl. Reg was very proud of his grandchildren. Sympathy is extended to the family and Reg will be missed by his friends. The family include this message in the newspaper tributes: “Da, we will miss you so very much. A life full of laughter, carried on through family.” - Kevin Trask
