Country hospitality ■ Patrice Larkin comes with a history as Food Monitor at the DiamondValley Community Hospital. Her husband Phil comes as the 14th of 15 children from Tatong in north-east Victoria. Together from lunchtime this Friday (June 5), the couple take on the challenge of taking over a country pub in tough times. Patrice and Phil are taking over the Grand Central Hotel in High St, Yea, at a time when there are Government restrictions on the numbers of people they can serve. Long Shots reckons they will do well. They aim to serve local families with good food and drinks at affordable prices. Their menu includes soup of the day, garlic bread and buffalo wings as entrees. Kids can enjoy chicken strips, fish, party pies and sausage rolls, all with chips. Main menu items include spaghetti, beer battered flathead, Angus steak sandwich, chicken schnitzel, rissoles, bacon and mash. The Grand Central tradition of an $18 parma continues on Wednesday nights. Grill specials include a 300gm Angus, and lamb cutlets. There are Vegetarian options, and gluten-free meals too. Desserts include berry bread, crepes, ince cream, plus coffee and tea. From the bar, there is Carlton, Carlton Dry, Great Northern and Canadian Club. Patrice and Phil say it is important for customers to book ahead: 5797 2513.

● Our report from 1990 ■ Ivanhoe-schooled, Mernda-raised, Garry Cecil became the Shire Secretary for the Yea Shire in June 1990. He was aged 25. He followed on from CEO Peter Mangan. Mr Cecil completed his Higher School Certificate in 1982, then studed for two years at RMIT towards his Bachelor of Business Local Government degree. He worked as Finance Officer for the City of Coburg, then as an Administrative Officer at the then-Shire of Whittlesea.
Big spenders
■ Mick Milroy, of Webb Ware’s Lane, wrote to criticise Yea Council for being involved in $23,000 in confidential pay-outs. A sum of $5000 of ratepayers’ money was paid out regarding a matter involving “Council, a former Council employee, and the Equal Opportunities Commission”. A further $18,000 had been made as another ‘confidential matter’ pay-out, Mr Milroy claimed.
Closure threat
■ Whittlesea MLAMax McDonald warned that the local Occasional Child Care service waqs in danger of closing. “I trust that this hard working committee can maintain its services to the children of Whittlesea pending the outcome of my representations to the Minister,” Mr McDonald said.
Means tested

■ The Victorian Police Association objected to speed cameras being used as a revenue raising device for the State Government. Sen. Const. Paul Reardon said the cameras at Merton detected 111 speeders in one hour on the long weekend. With fines of $100 each, over an eight-hour day, the revenue raised would be $80,000.

● This week’s historical photo from Alan Thorley is a postcard marked ‘Black’s Spur, near Healesville’.
■ There were 64 objections to a service station redevelopment at Kinglake West. Yea Council approved a permit for the Delta service station at the corner of Yea-Whittlesea Rd and Whittlesea-Kinglake Rd (‘Tommy’s Hut’). The owner of the service station was Trapezi Pty Ltd.
