The newspaper company, which has been in existence for 132 years since 1888, has also stopped its online coverage in these areas covering the Darebin, Banyule and Nillumbik municipalities.

Leader will provide an online service-only to cover the Whittlesea area. The print edition of the Whittlesea Leader has ceased. The final issue was published on April 8.

Leader’s announcement came last Thursday as part of closure of more than 100 publications across Australia. Leader is part of the News Corp group operated by the Murdoch family.

Leader Newspapers has been part of the northern suburbs over 132 years. The Northcote Leader was established by the Rev. A.H. Richardson, succeeded by the Whalley Brothers, then Decimus Mott and Sons.

Abrupt end for 132-year-old press network ■ A 132-year tradition came to a close last week when the Leader Newspapers group announced that it had stopped printing all its publications.

In Melbourne’s north, Leader has permanently closed all printing and online newspapers for: ■ Northcote Leader ■ Preston Leader ■ Diamond Valley Leader ■ Heidelberg Leader.

The print and online cessation also applies to: ■ Sunbury Leader/Macedon Ranges Leader ■ Manningham Leader ■ Progress Leader.

Newspaper printing has concluded, to be replaced by digital-only reporting for the Whittlesea Leader.

The following community titles in Melbourne will become digital only: Stonnington, Mornington Peninsula, Knox, Whitehorse, Monash, Northern, (Hume), Whittlesea, Maroondah, Moorabbin, Mordialloc Chelsea, Moreland, Lilydale and Yarra Valley, Frankston, Bayside, Caulfield Port Phillip, Cranbourne, Greater Dandenong, Moonee Valley, Maribyrnong, Wyndham.

New weekly newspapers - in press and online - to replace the Leader titles have already been announced

The new newspapers will all appear under The Local Paper masthead, with a localised banner using familiar heritage titles.

The Leader dynasty began in January 1888 when the Rev. A.H. Richardson and R. Lemon from offices in Bay St, Brighton. Northcote content was minimal.

Twins Robert and John Whalley purchase the Leader in 1890.

The two brothers immersed themselves in the Northcote community.

After briefly squabbling with the Northcote Council over council advertising (with the Council preferring to use the Collingwood Fitzroy Mercury) the Northcote Leader became a thriving local newspaper with

● Decimus Mott: headed a family which ran the Leader newspaper group from 1924 to 1986 a readership spreading as far as Whittlesea.

By the early 1900s the Whalley brothers had become strong members of the community.

In 1911 Robert Whalley made a significant contribution when as the Secretary of the Northcote Library Committee he approached American philanthropist Andrew Carnegie and asked for a donation to build a new library.

Carnegie agreed to contribution 50 per cent of the cost of construction if the Northcote Council agreed to pay the remaining sum and offer the library service free of charge.

The Council were reluctant to agree to these terms but even more reluctant to let Carnegie’s money slip ● Robert Whalley out of their reach and the terms were accepted.

John Scott Whalley also made considerable contributions to Northcote and Preston, including serving 30 years as the editor of the Northcote Leader, a position which ended when the brothers sold the newspaper to Decimus Mott in 1924.

In November of that year the Preston Council presented an illuminated address to John for his service to the community.

● John Whalley Decimus Mott and his brother Hamilton had started the Border Morning Mail in 1903.

He and sons - George, Walter and Robert - expanded their company to include The Advertiser (Diamond Valley and Whittlesea) and expanded into northern suburbs including Brunswick and Coburg.

They expanded into Heidelberg, East Yarra (Doncaster-Templestowe) and Diamond Valley.

A joint venture had titles at Essendon, Broadmeadows, Keilor and Sunbury-Melton.

Then came the eastern suburbs including Box Hill, Nunawading, Ringwood-Croydon, Lilydale and Knox-Sherbrooke.

A merger with Progress Press also included the Waverley Gazette and Chadstone Progress.

Standard Newspapers and Westernport Publishing titles also came into the group.

The Mott family sold the entire chain of more than 40 newspapers in 1986 to The Herald & Weekly Times for $23 million in cash and $32 million in shares.

The shares were sold within hours to Sir Ron Brierley who made a princely profit a few months later when the H&WT was embroiled in a takeover battle.

Rupert Murdoch’s $55 million Leader group grew through the 1980s and 90s. Digital disruption and COVID-19 combined to bring about the permanent closure of more than 100 newspapers across Australia.

News Corp Australia confirmed that the local and regional newspapers will become digital only or disappear entirely.

Estimates are that between 6001000 jobs will be lost as a consequence of the closures.

Newscorp announced that it has permanently closed the print and digital newspapers in Northcote, Preston, Diamond Valley and Heidelberg.

Local Media Pty Ltd, headed by veteran Victorian publisher Ash Long, has commenced a stable of publications, available free each week in print and online.

Northern Division

The Local Paper has the following titles in its Northern Division: ■ Northcote Budget ■ Preston Post ■ Reservoir Times ■ Whittlesea Post ■ Diamond Valley News ■ Heidelberger First editions commenced on Wednesday, May 20. This is the third edition. There has been a widespread welcome to The Local Paper’s energetic approach to responsible local journalism.

The Local Paper has been a familiar weekly newspaper in the Diamond Valley and Whittlesea areas since February 2016.

The Local Paper editions are being distributed through a network of more than 100 outlets including newsagencies, Tatts shops, milk bars, convenience stores and service stations.

In the early weeks, the papers will appear as a consolidated Northern Edition of The Local Paper, whilst local publishing arrangements are finalised.

Eastern Division

From June 10, The Local Paper will have the following additional titles in its Eastern Division: ■ Progress News ■ Manningham News (incorporating the Doncaster-Templestowe News) ■ Whitehorse Gazette (incorporating the Box Hill Gazette and Nunawading Gazette) ■ Maroondah Mail (incorporating the Ringwood Mail and Croydon Mail) ■ Knox News ■ Monash Gazette (incorporating the Waverley Gazette and Oakleigh Times) In the early weeks, the papers will appear as a consolidated Eastern Edition of The Local Paper, whilst local publishing arrangements are finalised.

Publishing arrangements

■ The Local Paper will be published as normal next week (June 10). However, the Queen’s Birthday Weekend means there are earlier deadlines for advertising and editorial content.

Display advertising bookings and copy should be lodged by 5pm Friday (June 5).

Classified advertising will be accepted until 5pm Monday (June 8).

Sports copy should be lodged by 10am Monday, but earlier submission on Sunday night would be appreciated.

Green rules under review ■ Nillumbik Councillors want local politicians Vicki Ward (Eltham) and Danielle Green (Yan Yean) to encourage a review of the controversial 10/30 and 10/50 rules relating to removal of vegetation.

“Council [was] presented with a briefing onApril 21 which outlined an advocacy position for consideration to be put to the Minister for Planning, in regard to the need for review of bushfire protection provisions that exempt vegetation clearance for the need for a planning permit within the Nillumbik Planning Scheme,” Councillors were told at last week’s meeting.

“Councillors and the community have acknowledged the impacts that exemptions to clear vegetation are having (anecdotally) on neigh-

bourhood character. Known as the 10/30 and 10/50 rules – these ‘rules’ allow vegetation removal to occur without the need for a planning permit.

“There is ongoing concern that these exemptions are having a detrimental impact on local vegetation, biodiversity and neighbourhood character on the Nillumbik Shire.

“It is recommended that Council do not advocate to make a specific change to the current provisions, rather that Council support a review of the impacts of current exemptions for clearance of vegetation,” said the recommendation.

Crs Peter Clarke and Peter Perkins were successful with the motion.

Fitzsimons Lane works nod

Comment closes ■ Public comment about Mayer Park, Thornbury, closes on Monday (June 8).

Mayer Park is one of the open spaces of the City of Darebin, and the Council has been working with the local community to look at ways the park could be improved for the future.

The draft Future Mayer Park master plan was released for community consultation, and Council has been keen to hear feedback from residents on the plan. The master pla dentifies elements of the park that require improvements.

Preston Post Grant applications

■ The first round of grant applications faced at deadline of last Sunday (May 31). Some $500,000 in funds is being made available by the City of Darebin: ■ Individual Business grant. Up to $5,000 for investing in online development, e-commerce, upskilling, or business adaptation ■ Collective Business grant ■ Social Enterprise grant ■ Placemaking activities grant The grants are available for local businesses in the City of Darebin to provide immediate financial relief, while supporting their resilience against the economic effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Nillumbik Council has delayed its date to set its 2020-21 budget. The decision has been put off until the special Council meeting to be held on Tuesday (June 9). The delay was moved by Crs Bruce Ranken and Peter Clarke.

Nillumbik Councillors were split when it came to putting the Shire’s Housing Strategy on display to the public. A vote at the May 26 meeting saw Councillors endorse the strategy. Cr Peter Perkins called for a division. For: Cr Bruce Ranken, Cr Jane Ashton, Cr Karen Egan and Cr Peter Clarke. Against: Cr Peter Perkins, Cr John Dumaresq and Cr Grant Brooker.

Assistance for pets

■ A program to provide temporary accommodation for much-loved pets is supporting people experiencing family violence to leave unsafe situations.

Family violence services, community services and Victoria Police can access temporary accommodation and care for pets on behalf of people who need to leave a domestic violent situation.

This initiative falls within the Domestic Animal Welfare Policy – a joint initiative between the RSPCA and the Cities of Whittlesea Darebin and Moreland – to support residents impacted by family violence.

Emma Samuel of Ivanhoe has expressed her concerne that part of Darebin Parklands near Curzon St, Ivanhoe, has been rezoned and sold by Council to a private citizen.

The Council responded that an area of 38m2 and is part of a larger parcel of land at 1 Liberty Pde, Ivanhoe (Darebin Creek Reserve). is currently occupied by and licensed to the neighbouring property.

The Shire has executed a contract of sale with the CFA - for part of the land at 109-115 Yan Yean Rd, and the Deed of Surrender of Lease for the existing Plenty Fire Station site - be made public, but financial details be released in conjunction with and after consultation with the CFA. A confidential report contained a recommendation that the decision to execute the contract with the CFA be made public, but financial details concerning the negotiations and the final sale price be kept confidential.

Big spenders

■ Mick Milroy, of Webb Ware’s Lane, wrote to criticise Yea Council for being involved in $23,000 in confidential pay-outs.

A sum of $5000 of ratepayers’ money was paid out regarding a matter involving “Council, a former Council employee, and the Equal Opportunities Commission”.

A further $18,000 had been made as another ‘confidential matter’ pay-out, Mr Milroy claimed.

Closure threat

■ Whittlesea MLAMax McDonald warned that the local Occasional Child Care service waqs in danger of closing.

“I trust that this hard working committee can maintain its services to the children of Whittlesea pending the outcome of my representations to the Minister,” Mr McDonald said.

Means tested

■ Some senior citizens at Kinglake were about to be means tested for their once-amonth Meals On Wheels at the local Community Cebtre.

Marg Findley, Human Services Manager, said that the financial test was being applied by the State Government.

Paul Reardon said the cameras at Merton detected 111 speeders in one hour on the long weekend. With fines of $100 each, over an eight-hour day, the revenue raised would be $80,000.

Local News

19 virus deaths ■ Some scial distancing restrictions were lifted in Victoria on Monday (June 1), but there are reminders that 19 people have lost their lives because of the Coronavirus.

Total number of cases is 1653. There have been 168 confirmed vases that have been acquired through unknown transmission.

Currently six people are in hospital, including one patient in intensive care. Some 1560 people have recovered.

Of the total 1653 cases, there have been 1373 in metropolitan Melbourne, and 234 in regional Victoria. several cases remain under investigation. Total number of cases are made up of 875 men and 778 women.

More than 515,000 tests have been processed to date. One new case of COVID0-19 has been linked to the outbreak at quarantine hotel, Rydges on Swanston in Melbourne.

■ Police are investigating a collision between a car and a motorcycle in Yarrambat on Sunday afternoon (May 31).

It is understood that a red 1990 Honda motorcycle was travelling south on Yan Yean Rd when it collided with a white 2018 Mercedes station wagon about 3.05pm.

The motorcyclist, a 54-year-old Briar Hill man, sustained life-threatening injuries and was transported to hospital.

The driver, a 31-year-old Doreen man, stopped at the scene to assist and rendered first aid.

Investigators have spoken with several people who were in the area at the time and witnessed the collision.

The investigation remains ongoing.

‘False claims’ about Preston Market: Cl ■ Darebin Council says false claims have been made in the war of words about the future of Preston Market.

The Darebin City Council last month resolved to call on the Victorian Planning Authority and Minister for Planning to put in place the strongest possible protections to ensure the Preston Market retains what the community loves about it despite any potential future change to the site.

“Since then, a number of false claims and misinformation have circulated online and created considerable confusion in the community about what Council is doing to protect the muchloved market,” a Council spokesman said.

“Disturbingly, some of the claims being spread include the false claim that Council voted to demolish the market.

“This is blatantly untrue. This statement seeks to call out these false claims and set the record straight to ensure the community has an accurate, clear and credible source of information.

“At the May 18 Council Meeting, the Council resolved to call on the state government to apply a permanent Heritage Overlay to the Preston Market as part of the package of planning controls and mechanisms it is working on for the entire Preston Market Precinct. “[It] called on the Minister for Planning to put in place an immediate Interim Heritage Overlay whilst these controls are being developed.

“Currently the state government is reviewing the planning ‘rules’ at the site, and Council is advocating hard for strong rules that protect what’s important about the market.

“These rules are important because they are the rules that will apply if the private owner wants to change or develop the site.

■ The State Government has announced it will contribute $400,000 for Darebin Council to construct the Oakover Pocket Park in Preston.

The pocket park will be located on the now-closed slip lane on the corner of Oakover Rd and High St. Its construction will help revitalise the Preston Junction precinct.

The park was a key project in the Junction Urban Master Plan which was endorsed by Council in 2014.

The Council last year began works to revitalise the site which included widening the footpath, planting six new trees and installing a drinking fountain.

The Oakover Pocket Park is one of 24 new parks across Melbourne to receive funding through the Suburban Parks Program.

Construction is expected to begin in early 2021.

Whittlesea re-start

● Last week’s report about the Preston Market in The Local Paper (May 27 edition) nity members to not believe the claims about the market being demolished.

“Darebin Council loves the Preston Market and is determined to ensure it thrives well into the future.

“It is important to note the Preston Market is owned and run privately – just like supermarkets are. Many people are surprised by this, and while Council loves the market and wants to protect it, it doesn’t have the power to just do this. That is why Council is calling on the VPA to apply the strongest possible protections to the market precinct,” the spokesman said.

■ Lalor, Mill Park, Thomastown and Whittlesea libraries reopened their doors on Monday (June 1) as COVID-19 restrictions ease.

Bookworms are able to visit libraries for limited services including click and collect, family fun bundles and print and collect. For more information about these services visit yprl.com.au Libraries are also exploring a home delivery option for vulnerable residents and those who are practicing social isolation due to poor health.

All current loans have been automatically extended until June 30 and after hours return chutes have reopened. Returned books will remain in quarantine for 72 hours.

Libraries will open 10am-6pm Monday to Thursday and 10am-5pm on Fridays.

Whittlesea Library is open until 5pm each day as per normal.

All libraries will close between 2pm-3pm every day for cleaning self-checking machines and restocking of shelves.

More services re expected to be announced from June 29.

20th anniversary

■ This year is the 20th anniversary of Friends of Montmorency Bushlands. The group formed in 2000 when a few locals noticed that a reserve in the area looked neglected. They approached the Banyule Bush Crew to find out if they could work there to restore the indigenous vegetation.

● Darlene Bungey ■ When a book has the subtitle Finding My Father, The Singer Who Swapped Hollywood Fame For Home In Australia it immediately sparks the reader's interest.

The book is Daddy Cool, about author Darlene Bungey's father, Robert Cutter, who later became known in Australia as Lawrie Brooks.

In the 1930s, Robert Cutter sang at Honolulu hotspots, later performing at the Academy Awards in front of Bette Davis, Katharine Hepburn, and Clark Gable, and other stars.

Robert's recording of Hawaiian Paradise outsold the recordings of the time of Bing Crosby and Guy Lombardo.

Yet this singer who tasted Hollywood fame ended up in Australia, became Lawrie Brooks, and an Australian infantryman in World War II. After being involved with many women, he married local radio star Gloria, and the happy couple were blessed with two daughters, Darleen and Geraldine, who were unaware of their father's early Hollywood fame.

Darleen grew up to be a writer and a biographer, who was determined to find out more about her father's earlier life, and the biography Daddy Cool is the result, a book earning praise from eminent Australian writer Tom Keneally, who described it as a charming and engrossing memoir that reads like silk.

Robert's/Lawrie's performing life had its moments of notoriety, as Darleen said.

"The LosAngeles Palomar in 1935 was a famous ballroom. Following on the heels of Benny Goodman, my father and his band were playing at this glamorous dinner and dance venue. As my father sang, his beautiful tenor voice would have held the vast space in thrall."

But the evening didn't end there, as shortly after Robert finished singing, a uniformed policeman marched onto the stage and applied handcuffs during the middle of his song, and marched him out of the Palomar and into a police van.

"The following day the headline on the front page of the newspaper read: 'Crooner Arrested in Film Love Case'. Under the picture of the handsome 28-year-old, a banner ran 'Accused'. He was caught up in a high profile divorce case, was soon to marry the Hollywood femme-fatale in question, but 12 years later, after having said 'I do" four times, this man became my father," Darleen explained.

With such fascinating stories unearthed about her father with a past, Darleen Bungey's biography Daddy Cool promises to be a page-turner.

Victorian Arts Mildura Arts ■ Located just a stone's throw from the banks of the Murray River, Mildura Arts Centre is the premier venue for visual and performing arts in far north-western Victoria.

Today, the Mildura Arts and Cultural Precinct features a state of the art theatre, regional gallery. Sculpture Park, licensed café and Mildura's most important heritage building. Rio Vista Historic House.

Rio Vista was purchased in 1950 for £18,000 and converted into an art gallery.

Back un 1944, a valuable art collection had been bequeathed to the Mildura City Council by Senator R.D. Elliott, owner of the Elliott Newspaper Group.

The bequest was on the condition that a suitable place to be found to house the collection.

Several rooms in Rio Vista, including the conservatory were converted for display purposes and many of the original surfaces were painted over.

Conversion into the Mildura Art Gallery saved the house from probable demolition and subdivision of the surrounding grounds.

In more recent times the focus has been narrowed to exploring the history of the Chaffey family and the restoration of Rio Vista to the splendour of its earlier years.

The regional gallery and Permanent Collection is one of Victoria's best kept secrets.

The foundation bequest of Senator R.D. Elliott and Mrs Hilda Elliott includes the largest single collection of paintings by AngloIrish artist Sir William Orpen.

Bank contracts unfair: Court ■ The Federal Court of Australia has declared several terms within six small business contracts used by Bendigo and Adelaide Bank to be unfair.

The relevant contracts are standard form ‘small business’ loan contracts which the bank entered into with its customers after November 12, 2016.

The Australian Securities and Investments Commission was also successful in having the Federal Court declare the same terms appearing in other standard form small business contracts, entered into by the Bank with its customers in the same time period, to be unfair.

The Bendigo and Adelaide Bank will give an undertaking to the Court not to use, or rely upon, any of the impugned terms in a manner that is unfair, or causes any customers to suffer loss or damage.

Justice Gleeson found that the unfair terms: ■ caused a significant imbalance in the parties’ rights and obligations under the contract; ■ were not reasonably necessary to protect the legitimate interests of Bendigo and Adelaide Bank; and ■ would cause detriment to the small businesses if the terms were relied on.

ASIC’s investigation revealed that some of the unfair terms gave the bank broad discretion to unilaterally vary the terms and conditions of the contract without giving the borrower advance notice, or an opportunity to exit the contract without penalty.

Other terms allowed the bank to take disproportionate actions in response to a breach by the borrower, for example, by calling a default without giving the borrower an opportunity to remedy a breach, or by calling a default based on events that do not present any material risk to the bank.

In handing down the judgment on Thursday (May 28), Justice Gleeson noted that ASIC, as the statutory authority responsible for enforcing the ASIC Act, has a public interest in seeking these declarations.

ASIC Commissioner Sean Hughes said, “ASIC is committed to protect small business owners of Australia from unfair terms in loan contracts, particularly where business borrowers are confronted with inflexible standard terms.’

Since July 2010, ASIC has administered the law to deal with unfair terms in standard form consumer contracts for financial products and services, including loans.

From November 12, 2016, the unfair contract terms provisions applying to consumers under the Australian Consumer Law and the ASIC Act were extended to cover standard form ‘small contractbusiness’ contracts.

Small businesses, like consumers, are often offered contracts for financial products and services on a ‘take it or leave it’ basis, commonly entering into contracts where they have limited or no opportunity to negotiate the terms.

These are known as ‘standard form’ contracts. Small businesses commonly enter into these ‘standard form’ contracts for financial products and services, including business loans, credit cards, and overdraft arrangements.

The unfair contracts law applies to standard form small business contracts entered into, or renewed, on or after November 12, 2016 where: ■ the contract is for the supply of financial goods or services (including loan contracts); ■ at least one of the parties is a ‘small business’ (under the ASIC Act, a business employing fewer than 20 people); and ■ the upfront price payable under the contract does not exceed $300,000, or $1 million if the contract is for more than 12 months.

In March 2018, ASIC released Report 565: Unfair contract terms and small business loans.

The report: ■ identifies the types of terms in small business loan contracts that raise concerns under the law; ■ provides details about the specific changes that have been made by the ‘big four’ banks to their small business loan contracts ensure compliance with the law; and ■ provides general guidance to lenders with small borrowers to help them assess whether loan contracts meet the requirements under the Unfair Contract Terms law.

Yandell Walton's work encompasses projection, installation and interactive digital media. Through work that melds architectural space with the projected image, Yandell has become recognised for her public projection works that merge the actual and the virtual to investigate notions of impermanence in relation to environmental, social and political issues.

■ There really is a person named Dan Tana and back in 1964, when trains still ran down Santa Monica Boulevard, he opened his now iconic restaurant.

Not far from the Ramada Plaza Hotel and Suites is this world famous Italian restaurant.

The spaghetti and meat balls are to die for and the rest of the menu is superb. It will be a very sad day if and when this loved landmark restaurant closes their doors for good.

The prediction is that one in fourrestaurants will not survive this pandemic attack across the United States, regardless of what Government funding is injected into the industry.

Gates fights for vaccine ■ Five years ago, Bill Gates warned that the biggest potential killer the world faced wasn't war, but a pandemic.

The billionaire spent hundreds of millions of dollars to find faster ways to develop vaccines and create disease-tracking systems.

He urged world leaders to build national defenses against new infectious diseases. Looking back, Mr. Gates said, "I wish I had done more to call attention to the danger."

The Microsoft Corp. co-founder is now squaring off against the scenario he sought to forestall.

"I feel terrible," he said in an interview. "The whole point of talking about it was that we could take action and minimise the damage."

In his second career as philanthropist and co-chair of one of the wealthiest foundations dedicated to global health and American education, Mr Gates, 64 years old, has put himself at the center of the COVID-19 pandemic that has killed more than 283,000 people and crashed the world economy.

The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation pays for researchers seeking treatments, and it is working with pharmaceutical executives and governments to produce billions of doses of promising vaccines while they are being tested so they can be dispensed as soon as regulators approve them.

The foundation has helped reserve space in a manufacturing plant so production of the most effective new medicines can begin quickly.

Mr Gates questions pharmaceutical company chief executives, digging into the details of vaccine production.

"Every day, it's, OK, are we going to run out of glass vials?" he said. "You may think that's a simple part of it, but nobody's ever made seven billion vaccines."

■ Why isn't the tanking economy bringing home prices down with it? It's a reasonable question given that so much of the economy moves in lockstep, and the last economic crisis in 2008 sent the housing market into free fall.

So, what's different this time around? Let's break it down.

The price of anything is a function of the relationship between supply and demand.

Generally, home prices have been pushed up over the last fuive years by high demand created by a then-booming economy and a low supply of housing for sale, due in part to relatively low levels of housing construction and available land on which to build.

After the outbreak of the pandemic, housing demand fell as buyers lost their jobs, part of their income, or simply didn't want to be shopping for a house in the middle of a viral outbreak and what figures to be a period of great economic uncertainty.

Demand dropping was evident in a number of metrics.

Although a weak indicator of buyer demand, traffic to real estate portals like Zillow and Redfin dropped significant in the beginning of the outbreak, as did more reliable indicators like pending home sales and weekly mortgage applications.

This scenario is highly unlikely to play out again for two reasons. First, there was already a housing supply shortage prior to the pandemic, so any addition to the housing supply wouldn't be exacerbating an existing over-supply problem, like in 2008.

Second, a foreclosure crisis on the scale of 2008 is unlikely, at least in the near-term, because the federal government has placed a moratorium on foreclosures on federally backed mortgages and directed the mortgage industry to offer mortgage forbearance for up to a year to homeowners who have been impacted financially by the pandemic.

Historically, the financial crisis was an aberration with regard to how recessions typically impact housing markets.

While 2008 obviously destroyed the housing market, previous recessions have barely moved at all. If anything, prices went up.

"In the face of these global economic and industry business challenges, we have undertaken certain actions to mitigate the current financial impact on our business and to ensure MGM is well positioned for the future," the company's senior management said in a memo, "Unfortunately, these changes necessitate some permanent reductions of our workforce.

Cuts at companies similar in size and profile to MGM have come down in the past two weeks.

Annapurna Pictures laid off its chief financial officer James Pong, four creative executives in film and TV, and staff at the assistant level.

Two weeks ago, Jason Blum's Blumhouse Productions laid off assistants and coordinators and announced pay cuts for senior leadership.

All major talent agencies have either reduced staff or slashed pay, or both.

The Walt Disney Company has been hit hardest among the major studios, furloughing tens of thousands of parks employees and many others in corporate and studio divisions.

■ If I asked a young person today, "Have you ever heard of Maggie Fitzgibbon?" - I would probably get a blank stare.

Maggie found fame on London's West End and in radio, film and television, but has probably not received the recognition she deserved in her own country.

Maggie, her mother Minnie and her brother ‘Smacka’ Fitzgibbon were a family of very successful entertainers.

Minnie Mitchell had been a vaudeville performer before marrying Frank Fitzgibbon in 1927.

The family home was in Aspendale, Margaret was born in 1928 and her brother Graham (Smacka) in 1930.

Margaret was educated at St Brigid's Primary School in Mordialloc and Kilbreda College in Mentone.

At the age of 17 she took singing lessons and in 1946 landed a role in a Tivoli show, Laffiesta.

Margaret sang opera and popular songs in shows as well as playing the ‘Principal Boy’ in pantomimes.

She was encouraged to continue in theatre by the late Kenn Brodziak. In the early 1950s Margaret moved to Sydney to sing in the nightclubs, at this stage she was now known as Maggie.

Maggie worked in radio on The Club Show with Jack Davey on 2GB. In 1952 Mr Harald Bowden of J.C. Williamson's offered her the

Maggie appeared onstage with the comedy team of Flanagan and Allen and starred in musical comedies such as Lady At The Wheel, Rose Marie, Kookaburra, Do-Re-Mi (with Max Bygraves) and The Boys From Syracuse.

Maggie returned to Australia in 1963 to star in Noel Coward's production of Sail Away.

In 1976 Maggie returned to London to star in Side By Side By Sondheim.

She had her own television series, Maggie's Place. Maggie appeared as a guest star on popular comedy shows such as The Benny Hill Show and Morecambe and Wise.

She also played dramatic guest roles in English television shows. Maggie returned to Australia in the 1970s to perform at her brother's restaurant Smacka's Place, in North Melbourne.

Sadly ‘Smacka’ passed away in 1979. His four children have carried on the family tradition.

Nichaud is a fine jazz singer and Mark is a renowned pianist. (I have had the pleasure of working with Mark in several shows.)

Andrew and Dominic formed the group BABBA and perform Abba tribute shows.

Maggie was awarded the OAM in 2002 for her work with homeless people.

Maggie Fitzgibbon went on to live on a farm in Northern Victoria and to enjoy her retirement.

A beautifully beguiling and sumptuously handsome adaptation of the classic novel and often filmed tale that brings a uniquely new and freshly rich tapestry to the oft told tale that remains highly respectful and faithful to its source material, a glitteringly handsome satire of social class and the pain of growing up.

The superb cast includes Anya Taylor-Joy as Austen's famed Emma Woodhouse, Mia Goth as Harriet Smith, the always reliable Bill Nighy as Mr. Woodhouse, and along with Gemma Whelan, Callum Turner and and Josh O'Connor, all equally excel in their respective roles, driven by an illuminating screenplay and sensitive yet intensely focused and respectful direction by first time feature director Autumn de Wilde.

Stars: *** Review: Set against the backdrop of 1950s New York, "Motherless Brooklyn" follows a lonely private detective afflicted with Tourette's Syndrome, as he ventures into the city's underworld to solve his friend's murder, and armed only with a few clues and his obsessive mind, he unravels secrets that hold the fate of the whole city in the balance.

Obviously influenced by such noir classics as "Chinatown," "The Maltese Falcon" and "LA Confidential," to name a few, this dark noir tale of murder and Government corruption is a meticulously made period piece that holds interest throughout due mostly in part to the emotionally compelling performance by multi-Oscar-nominated writerdirector, co-producer and star Edward Norton, who previous credits include a startling Oscar nominated and Golden Globe winning performance in "Primal F ear," the Oscar winning "Birdman," "The Illusionist" and "The Grand Budapest Hotel," to name a few.

Stars: **** Verdict: A compelling, gritty 1973 crime drama of small time ageing Boston mobster, Eddie Coyle, who is facing prison for repeat offences so decides to snitch on his friends to avoid jail time.

Based on the novel by George V. Higgins and directed by Peter Yates, whose previous credits include Robbery, Bullitt, The Hot Rock and The Dresser), here he captures and combines Boston's early 70's decaying old world elegance and urban rot and crumbling industrial sectors with stark other worldly surrealism.

Rourke’s Reviews Hannah Gadsby: Douglas ■ (MA). 72 minutes. Now streaming on Netflix.

After threatening retirement from the stand-up circuit in her 2018 Special Nanette (also streaming on Netflix), comedian Hannah Gadsby is back on stage with Douglas, confidently following up the hugely successful predecessor that made Gadsby a global phenomenon.

Filmed at The Theatre at the Ace Hotel in Los Angeles, Gadsby immediately deconstructs the stand-up formula by telling the audience what will be in her routine before it actually begins, as well as asking them to temper expectations, after Nanette struck such a chord with millions of people around the world.

Various topics are brought up during the evening, including a much-deserved attack on the antivaccination movement, and a hilarious examination/critique on various paintings from the Renaissance period.

I first saw Hannah Gadsby on the 2011 TV show Adam Hills In Gordon Street, where the two played off each other rather amusingly, but like many people, was not prepared for the confrontational nature of Nanette, which turned from funny to ferociously impassioned.

The harrowing outcry that dominated Nanette may not be present this time around, but Gadsby continues to be upfront on everything she talks about, it's just that the laughs and the anger make it to the finish line hand-in-hand.

Hannah Gadsby is a skilful, heartfelt performer, and Douglas doesn't disappoint, providing lots of laughs while giving the audience something to think about. Thank goodness she didn't retire.

Harpoon

■ (MA). 83 minutes. Available on DVD June 3.

Featuring a compelling blend of black humour and moments of unexpected gruesomeness, Harpoon is one of those hidden gems that deserves to find a strong cult following.

The story follows Richard (Christopher Gary), Sasha (Emily Tyra), and Jonah (Munro Chambers), who have been friends since childhood, and what initially happens when Richard suspects Jonah and Sasha of having an affair.

This suspicion leads to a violent confrontation between the two men, but once told that he is mis-

taken, Richard apologises by taking everyone on a trip on his yacht, but things take a further turn for the worse when, once out on the ocean, the boat breaks down, and the captain hasn't bothered to supply it with essentials such as food and emergency equipment.

Harpoon may be a small-scale production, but co-writer/director Rob Grant doesn't think small, infusing the film with a strong atmosphere, and has penned (along with co-scribe Mike Kovac) plenty of sharp, darkly funny dialogue, without becoming too glib or dependent on pop-culture references.

Grant is also blessed with a talented trio of actors, all of whom deliver his material with conviction and great timing.

More Knife In The Water than Dead Calm, Harpoon delivers the goods, and it will be interesting to see what Grant does next.

The Host ■ (M) (2006). 121 minutes. Available on Blu-ray June 3.

Before becoming a multiple Oscar winner this year with Parasite, director Bong Joon-ho wowed audiences in 2006 with The Host, a rip-roaring monster movie that's as politically loaded as the classic 1954 Godzilla.

Centring on the Park family, who run a food stand located on the bank of the Han River in Seoul, the plot details their misfortune when they encounter a mutated creature, created by chemicals dumped into the river by a nearby US army base.

As the military quarantine the area, the Parks have to escape the strict lockdown to track down the youngest member of the family, who has been taken by the beast.

The Host is a breathless, brilliant mix of drama, comedy, horror and social commentary, and Bong never strikes a false note, aided by an intelligent script, outstanding production values, special effects, and exceptional performances (including regular Song Kang-ho, who stars in Parasite).

If Parasite is the only film from this immensely talented film-maker that you have seen, then you are in for a treat with The Host.

Also highly recommended is Barking Dogs Never Bite (2000), Memories Of Murder (2003), Mother (2009), Snowpiercer (2013), and Okja (2017).

■ John Rozentals likes Cassegrain's approach from an excellent Port Macquarie base.

It was either the late 1990s or early 2000s that I was working with John Cassegrain at Cassegrain Wines near the NSW city of Port Macquarie and pooh poohed the concept of using a silver circle to label most of his wines.

But the idea has been one which has served the winery well for about 20 years - and that's no mean feat in this day and age.

Cassegrain occupies an enviable positon just about right on the highway midway between Sydney and Brisbane, but John and his winemaking son Alex have long realised that the warm area around Port Macquarie is mostly incompatible with quality wine.

Hence they have sought considerable quantities of fruit from cooler areas, particularly from the western side of the Great Dividing Range in NSW - areas such as New England, Mudgee and Rylestone, Orange and Cabonne, the Hilltops area around Young, the Canberra district, and Tumbarumba.

These choices have seen the winery thrive, and assume the NSW-centric position once occupied by Hungerford Hill.

‘Shot in the arm’ for harness racing ■ The first week of the extended regional racing was held at Bendigo on Monday May 25, proving a ‘shot in the arm’for Kilmore, Shepparton and Cranbourne area trainers to participate.

They won six of the eight races programmed including a treble to Bolinda trainer Brent Lilley, a treble to reinsman Chris Alford, plus victories to Elmore's Keith Cotchin and Arcadia's Steven Duffy.

Lilley's winners were Muscle Hill-Love Ya Doosie colt Kyvalley Senator in the Gold Central Victoria 3Y0 Trotters Mobile over 2150 metres.

Driven by Alford, Kyvalley Senator (gate four) raced uncovered outside Countess Chiron (gate six) before racing clear prior to the home turn in defeating Avimore (three wide last lap from the tail) by a half neck in a rate of 2-02.

Black And Gold (three back the markers) was third 18.8 metres away.

■ Alford was again in the cart aboard full brother Kyvalley Chief in the Schweppes Trotters Mobile over 1650 metres.

Settling near last from gate three on the second line as Fear The Yankee led from gate two, Kyvalley Chief set off three wide solo in the last lap and joined the leader on the final bend.

Driven confidently, Kyvalley Kyrie ran home stylishly to record a 1.6 metre margin over Fear The Yankee and Flaming Fives which was 18.1 metres back in third place after racing exposed.

The mile rate 1-56.4.

■ The third of Lilley's winners was ex-Kiwi 6Y0 Muscle Mass-Galleons Assault gelding Galleons Victory in the 2150 metre Alabar Bloodstock Trotters Handicap.

Taking a concession for Brad Chisholm, Galleons Victory starting from 20 metres was given a cosy trip one/one following the hot favourite Brandlo Prince (10m) who was left in the open as Jay Bee Flex was driven hard to lead.

Easing three wide well before the final bend, Galleons Victory swept to the front on straightening to score by a half neck from Kimmywho which flashed late from the rear, with Brandlo Prince third 4.5 metres away after doing it tough.

The mile rate 2-02.1.

■ Keith Cotchin's Somebeachsomewhere-Indigenous Art gelding Kennys Killer snared the CPO Café Carisbrook 3Y0 Pace over 2150 metres in a rate of 1-58.2.

Starting from the extreme draw, Kennys Killer driven by Tayla French wasn't pushed in the first lap after settling at the tail of the field with Alte leading from gate five.

Trailing Mea Culpa ahead of him forward at the bell, Kennys Killer gained the ride home he was looking for and when eased four wide on the home turn, ran home best to blouse a game Mea Culpa by a head, with Lethal Lover (three back the markers) using the sprint lane for third 2.9 metres away.

■ Steven Duffy's 4Y0 Bettors Delight-Dreams Of Heaven 4Y0 mare Millah Joy brought up two wins in succession after winning at Shepparton five days earlier by taking the 2150 metre Manburley Farm Pace with Shepparton's Bec Bartley again in the sulky.

Millah Joy after being trapped wide from gate five was driven hard to assume control at the bell before defying all challengers to register a strong 1.3 metre victory in advance of Terrorleen which was equally as tough after racing exposed for the final circuit. The Deal (one/two) was third 6.7 metres away. The mile rate -55.2.

■ Pearcedale partners Simone and Andrew Walker (no relation) snared the Best Accounting and Audit Pace over 1650 metres with smart Art Major-Getya Wings Out 3Y0 gelding Denis William.

Settling five back in the moving line from gate three on the second row, Denis William latched to the back of Cee Vee Vee ahead of him in the last lap, before finishing full of running to register a 1.5 metre margin in a slick 155.4 from Tre Cool which followed him throughout. Motu Cullen (three back the markers) was third 1.5 metres back.

■ Charlton trainer Greg Norman combined with veteran Bendigonian Brian Gath to land the Pryde's Easifeeds Pace over 1650 metres with honest American Ideal-Ultimate CC 4Y0 gelding Cee Cee In America.

■ Wednesday saw the first of the double headers with Melton racing during the afternoon and Kilmore at night.

Lara owner/trainer Paul Younger was successful at Melton with 4Y0 Majestic Son-Auzzie Rose gelding Frosty Reception in the Melton Toyota Trotters Mobile over 2240 metres.

Driven by Jodi Quinlan, Frosty Reception was given a lovely trip one/one from gate five and when taken three wide in the last lap to give chase to leader Winnie Cooper which capitulated, ran home strongly to register a 2 metre margin over Kyvalley Catwalk which followed the winner all the way. Aldebaram Leroy was third 6.7 metres away after trailing the pair. The mile rate 2-02.8.

■ America defied all challengers to score by a half head from the in-form All Whitey Then along the sprint lane from mid-field, with Form Anylist 1.3 metres back in third place after racing wide in the last lap. The mile rate 1-53.Daylesford's Anne-Maree Conroy was in the winners stall following the victory of 6Y0 Conch DevilleFrench Frolic mare Tuscan Dawn in the 2240 metre Aldebaran Park Trotters Handicap following an eye catching fourth at Ballarat a week earlier.

With only two runners on the front line, Tuscan Dawn was best to begin and crossed The Girls Got Flair inside her to lead throughout.

Given an easy time, Truscott Dawn never looked in any danger, running out a 6.9 metre victor over The Girls Got Flair which could make no impression after easing off her back on turning, with 40 metre equal backmarker BD Khoasan (one/one at bell) third 6.4 metres away.

The mile rate 2-03.3.

■ Prominent breeder Ian Kitchin was also victorious when the Jess Tubbs and Greg Sugars co-trained 4Y0 Shadow Play-Schonbrunn gelding Hector Macray greeted the judge in the Alabar Pace over 2240 metres.

Given the run of the race from the pole by Greg trailing Rocking Tess drawn next door, Hector Macray used the sprint lane to perfection, scoring by 3.4 metres from the pacemaker in a mile rate of 1-57. Heavily supported favourite Ragnarr (one/two - three wide home turn) was third 2.1 metres back. Raced by Ian in partnership with Ken Adams and George Puchenlko, Hector Macray recorded his 6th success in 35 outings.

Ian's very good pacer Tee Cee Bee Macray has been retired with a record of $246,974 in stakes from 84 starts resulting in 17 wins and 22 placings.

■ At Kilmore it was a joyous occasion for Darraweit's Alex Hurley who was seen running all the way down the straight towards the finishing post at the end of the TAB Long May We Play Trotters Handicap over 2150 metres as her 6Y0 Great Success-Bras Dhonneur gelding Mano De Dios was victorious.

driver Josh Duggan electing to take a trail on the free running Sovereign Minx to enjoy the run of the race. Using the sprint lane on turning, Mano De Dios at TAB odds of $39.10 dashed clear in the shadows of the post to record a one metre victory over Well Deserved (one/two - three wide trail last lap), with Sovereign Minx holding down third 5 metres away. The mile rate 2-04.6.

■ Many readers will recall Alex as being a cohost of the long running Harness Review radio program.

It was a mixed night result wise with a couple of long shots and very short priced favourites saluting, while Bendigo's Ellen Tormey took the honours after chalking up a driving double aboard Shaq ($2-00) and Don't Care ($8.70).

■ Mach Three-Kateeshar gelding Shaq trained by her for well known owner/breeder Kevin Clark landed the CUB 3Y0 Pace over 2180 metres in a mile rate of 2-00.8. Settling four back in the moving line after starting from the extreme draw, Shaq was sent forward three wide solo racing for the bell to be outside the leader Standbyme on the final bend and raced clear in the straight to register a strong 3.2 metre margin over the leader, with Im The Mightygramps running home late from the rear for third 13.8 metres away.

First starter Don't Care, a Used To Me-My Dreamweaver gelding trained at Shelbourne by Kate Hargreaves was successful on debut in the 2150 metre Jet Roofing 2Y0 Trotters Handicap in a race where almost every runner made a mistake at some stage.

Given a sweet trip one/one, Don't Care ran home nicely after both the leader Mustang Kelly and Sovereign Tiger trailing her galloped on the final bend when in control, scoring by a head from Watch And Act which raced in the open.

Aldebaran Midori was third 10.1 metres back from mid-field. The mile rate 2-13.1.

■ The OOKR- 98.3 FM Pace over 1690 metres went the way of Croydon part-owner/trainer Laraine McKenzie's 5Y0 Roll With Joe-Dolly Tingira gelding Will And Andy paying odds of $76.80. Driven by Chris Alford, Will And Grace was taken back at the start from outside the front line to settle at the rear before running home off a three wide double trail in the last lap to prevail by 1.9 metres in 1-57.8 over the ex-Kiwi favourite Skreemr first up in Oz for Wayne Potter which he followed home. Polemarker Bellissima was third 6.1 metre away after leading.

■ Avenel's David Aiken was successful with long odds-on favourite Reactor Now ($1.04), a 4Y0 gelded son of Auckland Reactor and Whos Sorry Now in the Clare Weston Photography Pace over 2180 metres.

With son Josh in the sulky, Reactor Now was never out of second gear, leading all of the way from the pole to score by 5.2 metres ahead of Six Elements which trailed in 1-58.5. Bonus Play showed something like his old form by storming home late from the rear for third 4.4 metres back.

Great pleasure

■ Another two meetings Stawell and Shepparton were held on Thursday.

Bannockburn trainer/driver Geoff Webster would have received great pleasure after winning the Serenity Massage 2Y0 Maiden Pace over 1785 metres with Western Terror-Dougs Courage filly Dougs Babe bred and named after his late brother Dougie.

Starting from the extreme draw, Dougs Babe raced by the Ballarat & District Trotting Club Standardbred Group settled three back in the moving line as Kimble began brilliantly from gate five to lead.

Sent forward prior to the bell, Dougs Babe raced roughly and galloped momentarily before regaining her composure to park outside Kimble for the final circuit. Showing plenty of tenacity, Dougs Babe was too strong over the concluding stages to record a 2.3 metre margin from One Bettor which had enjoyed a cosy trip one/two, with Kimble weakening for third a half neck away. The mile rate 2-00.5.

■ Lara trainer James Warnock combined with Greg Sugars to land the 2180 metre Bi-Rite Electrical Pace with consistent 4Y0 Western TerrorKano Star gelding Colonial Terra, leading throughout from the pole to score an easy 9.1

■ A fantastic Aldebaran Park Trotters Mobile over 2150 metres was the highlight of the Bendigo fixture with a sensation field doing battle - the victor being 7Y0 The Pres-Running Pinevale gelding Big Jack Hammer for owner Domenic Martello and trainer David Aiken. Driven by Josh Aiken, Big Jack Hammer starting from gate two on the second line settled with most of the field in front of him as Anywhere Hugo (gate three and Sundons Courage (gate six) vied for the fron running with Anywhere Hugo winning out.

Following a slick tempo throughout, Big Jack Hammer commenced a forward surge hitting the back straight on the final occasion and de spite making the final bend four wide as Sundons Courage went for home, was too solid at the finish, scoring by 6.5 metres over the rank out sider Lucinda Mac (three wide home turn), with Sundons Courage third 1.2 metres back. The mile rate 1-57.1.

■ Popular local trainer Trevor Monk combined with David Miles to land the Garrards Horse and Hound Pace over 2150 metres with Magnified a 5Y0 gelded son of We Will See and Little Bonzer.
