Local Arts Exhibition launched

■ Shepparton Art Museum has announced its inaugural exhibition program that will be presented in the new $50 million art museum designed by acclaimed architecture firm Denton Corker Marshall. Spanning five floors, SAM will launch with a suite of new exhibitions and major artist commissions by emerging and established Australian artists, with work to be presented across the Museum, the surrounding precinct and online. Coming together with a spirit of regeneration, the reimagined Museum will represent the diversity and richness of Victoria and its unique local surroundings along with the vision and aspirations of its people. The exhibition program spans sculpture, painting, video, photography, ceramics and installation and is set to build upon the existing strengths of the SAM Collection, including its nationally recognised ceramics collection and the nation’s most significant collection of South-East Australian Aboriginal art. SAM’s inaugural collection exhibition, Flow: Stories of River, Earth and Sky, showcases the nation’s largest holding of the extended Namatjira family, and is presented alongside a dynamic line up of world premiere Australian exclusives and commissions celebrating artists from across Australia and around the world. Highlights of the program include a major survey exhibition of the work of renowned Yorta Yorta artist Lin Onus; a new artwork commission by acclaimed Yorta Yorta, Wamba Wamba, Mutti Mutti and Boonwurrung artist, Maree Clarke, titled Connection to Country – I Remember When ... 2021; and a new participatory commission by Amrita Hepi. Dr Rebecca Coates, Artistic Director & CEO of SAM said: “I’m thrilled to be able to announce our inaugural exhibition program which ushers a new chapter of regeneration and community engagement for the Museum and Shepparton. “SAM holds a special place in the heart of Australians, presenting work by some of Australia’s most significant contemporary artists, locating their work within a global context. “These first exhibitions speak to our unique people and place and acknowledge and celebrate our local Yorta Yorta people and shared culture. “This is the most significant and exciting moment in SAM’s history as an organisation. I look forward to sharing this new chapter in SAM’s history that will build on its past legacy and create a new vision for the future.” The inaugural exhibition program to be presented at SAM includes: ■ The People’s Gallery will house a major survey exhibition, Lin Onus: The Land Within (opening November 20). ■ Showcasing one of Australia’s foremost artists and choreographers, A Call to Echo, 2021, the new participatory video installation by Amrita Hepi (opening November 20) will be the first exhibition for SAM Kids in the Children’s Gallery, a new, dedicated space for children and the young at heart. ■ The inaugural exhibition in the new Lin Onus Gallery will be Flow: Stories of River, Earth and Sky in the SAM Collection (opening November 20). ■ The new SAM has been designed to showcase SAM’s ceramics collection throughout the building. MITCHELL SHIRE LOCKDOWN ENDS

■ Mitchell Shire comes out of lockdown at 11.59pm tonight (Wednesday). Victoria’s Chief Health Officer, Professor Brett Sutton, has declared that lockdown restrictions in the Mitchell municipality will lift , with restrictions to match those in place in the remainder of regional Victoria. “While there are still new cases in Mitchell, public health officials are confident that both the lockdown – and the commitment of the community – have slowed the potential growth,” said a Department of Health statement. “Thousands of locals got tested while the lockdown has been in place, and first and second dose vaccination rates in the area have continued to grow. “While lockdown is lifting, important restrictions are still in effect. Masks must be worn indoors and outdoors, you can’t socialise inside a home, and more. Following these restrictions will continue to limit the spread of COVID-19. “You can’t leave the Mitchell Shire area and travel to Melbourne or any other area in regional Victoria that’s in lockdown other than for limited reasons, such as authorised work and permitted education, care and compassionate reasons, visiting an intimate partner, and necessary goods and services. “Locals should stay on high alert for symptoms and get tested if any develop. Check to see if the testing centre you may have visited recently is still operating at https:// www.coronavirus.vic.gov.au/where-get-testedcovid-19 “According to the most recent available data, in Mitchell, more than 90 per cent of the population have had their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine and more than 57 per cent have had both. “In addition to Victoria’s state-run clinics, local GP clinics and pharmacies are offering COVID-19 vaccinations. ■ A number of Mitchell Shire Council services will be able to return to face-to-face delivery, with COVID-safe protocols in place. While not all restrictions have eased, Mitchell Shire residents will join other regional Victoria local government areas in enjoying some freedoms including: The five reasons to leave the home will be removed There will be no limit on the distance you can travel from home, other than restrictions on entry to metropolitan Melbourne Public gatherings with up to 10 people will be allowed Private gatherings in the home are not permitted - however intimate partner visits and single-person bubble visits are allowed The Authorised Worker list will no longer apply, meaning most businesses and venues can reopen with capacity and density limits

The rule ‘if you can work from home, you should work from home’ will still apply, but office workers will be able to return up to 25 per cent or up to 10 people, whichever is greater. Masks must be worn indoors in workplaces Regional schools will reopen for onsite learning for all students - however some year levels are only on-site for part of the week. ■ The Lakes South Morang College is hosting a temporary pop-up COVID-19 vaccination clinic this weekend where the local community can get vaccinated. Bookings are preferred, walk-ins are available. Composting workshop for beginners This interactive online workshop has been designed to give those new to composting, or looking to give it a second try, all the information you need to get started. Participants will also get plenty of tips and tricks for easier composting. The workshop will be held on Tuesday, October 19, from 1pm to 2.30pm. ★ No waste cooking webinar: Frittatas Join for an interactive online cooking class, where participants will learn to cook the frittata by just using leftovers in their fridgesx, as well as learning essential food waste reducing recipes and tips. The workshop will be held on Thursday, October 21 at 7pm. ★ No waste cooking webinar: Quick Pickles Learn to cook the pickles by just using leftovers in your fridge. Participants will share some helpful tips and tricks for reducing food waste and how to keep food fresher for longer with food storage and planning advice. The workshop will be held on Saturday, October 23 at 11am. ★ Rethink Recycling: tour and trivia A free online Recycling Tour and Trivia Night with Banyule City Council’s Rethink Waste Education Centre. ■ Indi MHR Helen Haines returning to Canberra next week for the next session of Federal. Parliament. Dr Haines will be delivering an open letter to Prime Minister Scott Morrison. “With COVID restrictions easing soon, our health care system is about to be tested in regional Australia. After a long couple of years, health care workers need more support.
