As we step into June, we embrace a month filled with sunshine, end-of-school celebrations, and the heartfelt observance of Father’s Day. It’s a special time when we pause to recognize the vital role fathers play in shaping the lives of their children – with love, patience, and strength. In the pages of this month’s issue, you’ll find tributes to dads of all kinds, advice for strengthening father-child bonds, and stories that highlight the beauty of fatherhood.
But we also know that not every family’s story includes a father in the picture. For some children, Father’s Day can be confusing, even painful – especially when a dad is absent due to loss, separation, or other life circumstances. So, what do you do when your child doesn’t have a dad to celebrate?
You help them celebrate love in all its forms.
At City Parent, we believe family is about presence, not just titles. A father figure might be a grandfather, uncle,
stepfather, older sibling, mentor, coach – or even a mom who’s doing it all. These individuals may not always wear the label of “Dad,” but they show up in ways that matter deeply. And that’s worth honouring.
This Father’s Day, we encourage you to broaden the definition of what it means to celebrate. Create a ritual with your child that uplifts the people who support them. Write a thank-you note, take a special outing, or simply talk about the qualities that make someone a role model. Let this be a day about gratitude – for love given, time shared, and lessons taught.
If you are a single-parent household, blended family, LGBTQ+ parents, and everything in between. Remember every child deserves to feel celebrated and supported, and every caregiver who gives from the heart deserves recognition.
Here’s to the fathers, the father figures, and the everyday heroes who show up with love.
Mary Racioppo Editor-In-Chief, City Parent

Most parents of children with Autism face numerous challenges trying to find and access the much-needed services to help their child. Along with trying to find the right services for their child, once they find one, they are often put on lengthy wait lists that can last over a year or longer.
Another challenge parents face is that once they do see a specialist, they are often left out of the conversation. Despite knowing their child best and being their biggest advocate, a parent’s input is rarely included when determining the type of treatment the child receives.
Autism Spectrum Disorder is a lifelong neurological and developmental disorder that affects about one in 36 children. It affects each person differently, so a onesize-fits all approach to treatments and therapies doesn’t work. For many children, multiple types of therapy are needed to help them develop and learn.
Jonathan Alderson, an autism specialist, has been working with parents and Autistic children for over 25 years. He believes that in order to help a child succeed in their growth and development, parents and specialists must work together.
WORDS BY LORRAINE PELLEY
His unique multi-treatment approach incorporates a variety of treatments and services matched specifically to each child. Alderson collects information from the parents, observes the child and assesses their needs. He then uses all the information gained to create a highly individualized treatment map that not only outlines what treatments and therapies will work best for the child but also provides a sequential order to maximize the autistic child’s learning and development.
Knowing the stresses families face and the limitations of in-person
services, Alderson wanted to find a way to share his knowledge and help more children with Autism. He launched ThriveGuide, an algorithmbased digital platform two years ago.
ThriveGuide is an innovative online program that creates an individualized precision development plan based on each child’s strengths and challenges. The program not only selects the best type of therapies and strategies to help the child learn and develop, it also tells parents what order the treatments should be done to maximize their child’s learning potential.
The program is an inexpensive and easy-to-use tool that can be accessed anytime and anywhere.
To use ThriveGuide, a parent creates an account. They then complete a savable intake form that provides in-depth information about their child. This data is run through the algorithm designed by Alderson to create five customized goals called “5 to thrive”, with step-by-step action plans.
ThriveGuide can be used on its own or in conjunction with other therapies and programs, however, because it’s an online program, families also don’t need to wait.
Alderson completed an undergraduate degree in
Developmental and Educational Psychology from the University of Western Ontario and a Master of Education from Harvard University. He went on to study at the University of Paris and completed an intensive three-year intensive training in Autism Play Therapy at the Autism Treatment Centre of America. He developed an early interest in working directly with children. During his career, Alderson developed a humanistic approach to the services he provides. He’s lived in the United States and the United Kingdom before returning to Canada.
Now based in Toronto, Ontario, Alderson serves as Chair of the Professional Advisory Committee for the Seneca College Behavioral Sciences Program. He is the author of a seven-award winning book titled Challenging the Myths of Autism. He’s also been a keynote speaker and presenter at numerous seminars across Canada and around the world.
The years he spent working directly with children and listening to their parents talk about the type and timing of treatments that worked and didn’t work, was instrumental in influencing his in-person services and development of ThriveGuide.

“I learned how to look at my emotions and had the horses help with understanding them.”
“I am learning from the horses to release all the overwhelming emotions, not hold them in.”
Imagine understanding and releasing your emotions with the help of a gentle, empathetic therapy horse. These quotes are from youth who have experienced equine-assisted psychotherapy at The Mane Intent, Peterborough, Ontario.
Unlike traditional therapy sessions, Jennifer Garland, registered psychotherapist, founder and program director of The Mane Intent, offers a hands-on, ground-based, interactive approach that allows individuals to connect with their emotions in a unique and powerful way.
Garland says, “Equineassisted psychotherapy (EAP) is a therapeutic approach that involves intentional interactions between individuals and horses to address mental health or emotional challenges. It combines traditional psychotherapy techniques with the unique dynamic of working with horses. This type of therapy can help individuals with a variety of issues, such as anxiety, depression, trauma, grief, addiction, and relationship problems.”
Unlike traditional talk therapy, Garland says EAP is particularly effective for people, especially young people, who may struggle with verbal communication or benefit from experiential, hands-on approaches. It’s understandable how some children would find talk therapy intimidating and challenging to open
WORDS BY MARYLENE VESTERGOM
up to a stranger. Instead, with EAP, the horses mirror the participant’s emotional state and often help young people gain new insights into themselves, while building selfregulation and social skills.
Picture yourself spending time with horses – grooming, leading, and just being around them. It’s all about emotional growth and becoming more self-aware. The goal is to boost communication skills, manage emotions, and build self-confidence
through the bond you create with the horse. Their reactions provide gentle feedback, helping you understand and process your feelings and behaviours in a way that’s often more effective than traditional therapy.
“Horses do not live in a world of overthinking, rationalizing, and stress we cling to every day. Instead, they live in the here and now,” one client shared. “The horses seem to know me better than I know myself.”
“Horses are highly sensitive animals that respond to the emotional state of the person interacting with them,” says Garland. “They can help children and teens become more aware of their emotions.” Working with the horses can also help enhance selfesteem and confidence. As Garland explains, the magic behind EAP is that the horses do not judge or critique.
In a recent article for Kawartha Now, Garland spoke about the bond between humans and horses. “There is a moment when a human
is working with a horse – often a moment of surprise because the horse will do something unexpected and appropriate – that is just magical. There is an opening in that moment, and that opening is where healing occurs.” Garland’s words and observation capture the transformative power of these unique connections, reinforcing how this union can create opportunities for profound healing and growth.
One of the most challenging experiences children and teens can face is dealing with grief, often leaving them feeling overwhelmed. However, equine therapy offers a unique and gentle way to help young people navigate their grief.
“Grief can be difficult for children to express, especially when they don’t have the language or understanding to articulate their feelings. EAP can help them explore and understand their emotions through their interactions with horses, offering both therapeutic and emotional benefits.”
Located just 90 minutes outside Toronto, the farm is a haven of natural beauty. The Mane Intent is a therapeutic environment where nature plays a vital role in the journey towards healing and well-being.
At The Mane Intent, Garland leverages her experience in psychotherapy and equine-assisted psychotherapy with her herd of therapy horses. This combination provides a safe and supportive environment for children and teens to process their emotions and begin healing.
And don’t worry, no riding and or previous horse experience is required.

Bound by four of the Great Lakes and home to countless smaller bodies of water, it should be little surprise that Ontario is home to numerous scenic cruise experiences. Here are three that you may want to embark upon for a blissful summer day.
Sunset Cruises
Sailing from Port Carling, Peerless II prides itself on being able to go where Muskoka’s larger vessels – the famed RMS Segwun and Wenonah II – cannot. But that’s only part of the appeal.
Captain Randy Potts, who has been sailing these waters for forty years, is a font of knowledge about local history. A key part of any cruise aboard Peerless II is his informative live commentary touching upon vintage resorts, cottage estate belonging to the rich and famous, and maritime lore.
Peerless II is itself historic. Built in 1946, she spent five decades delivering gas around the lakes before she was retired in 1994, saved from an uncertain fate by Potts, and transformed into a scenic cruise boat.
There is never a bad day for a cruise aboard Peerless II, but on

Hornblower Niagara Cruise
For something completely different, embark aboard a Hornblower Niagara Cruise and venture to the base of the iconic Falls. The experience is a rush for the senses – the soaring heights of the Niagara gorge towering above you, the thunder of water as it cascades over the Falls, the chill caress of mist.
Niagara Falls consist of three falls: Bridal Veil Falls, the American Falls, and most impressive of them all, the 670m-wide Horseshoe Falls over which 8500 bathtubs worth of water pours every second. You can see all three from land, of course, but the absolute best vantage is from below aboard a Hornblower catamaran. The cruise culminates in an up-close encounter with the Horseshoe Falls – so close it almost feels as if the vessel will be consumed by the raging cascade.
You’ll wear a hooded honcho, you’ll get soaked anyways, and you’ll love every minute of it.

Island Queen
The Island Queen eases amidst the famed 30,000 Islands of Georgian Bay. The water is luminous, the sun bounces off the surface like diamonds, the sky above a deep blue. Little wonder the Island Queen is one of the premier attractions in Cottage Country.
The Island Queen is something of a marvel. Despite being 132 ft. long and capable of carrying 550 passengers, the ship draws less than 6 ft. of water, allowing it to effortlessly weave through the picturesque islands of windswept pine and barren granite.
You’ll pass through the Holein-the-Wall, an impossibly narrow channel between two islands, see the remnants of Depot Harbour, a ghost town that was once a thriving port, and learn about the island where singer Irving Berlin vacationed.

TORONTO CHILDREN’S CHORUS is a vibrant musical community that has welcomed and nurtured young voices for almost 50 years. Help your child discover their voice and love of singing. TCC has a range of choirs to ensure the perfect fit for your child, from 4 to 18. TCC choir programs run September to May and include singing, vocal technique, theory, and the pursuit of joy and excellence in choral singing. TCC choristers form strong friendships, grow in their knowledge and love of music, have amazing performance experiences, and develop teamwork and collaboration skills. KinderNotes, an early years music program for ages 4 and 5, is open for registration. Training Choirs, for ages 6 to 12, require an audition in May.
