Top tips for tax-filing season

The deadline for filing your 2024 income tax and benefit return is April 30, 2025. Are you ready?

It’s important to file on time. By doing so, you can avoid delays or interruptions to any refund, or benefit and credit payments you’re eligible for. If you have a balance owing, you’ll

avoid penalties and interest by filing and paying on time.

Here are some tips to help you this tax-filing season.

assistance for lowerincome households

You could get free tax help if you have a modest income and a simple

tax situation, such as if your income comes from employment, a pension, social assistance or scholarships. Across Canada, community organizations and volunteers can provide free tax clinics through the Community Volunteer Income Tax Program. In Quebec, it’s called the Income Tax Assistance – Volunteer

Earlier

Earlier this year, the Canada Revenue Agency simplified the process for registering for an online account, allowing you to manage your personal tax and benefit and credit information online.

Now, instead of having to wait for a security code in the mail, you can verify your identity immediately with the document verification service. In your account, you can also quickly and easily update your personal information, like your address, phone number and marital status.

Program. You may be able to find a clinic at your local library, shelter, senior’s centre, band office, or place of worship.

Also, this year, two million letters are being sent to lower-income individuals for a free, secure, invitationonly filing method that can be done over the phone or digitally.

Last year, 93 per cent of Canadians filed their tax return online. Filing online using a certified software program is easy and, in some cases, free. There’s also an option to autofill your return that makes the process even easier if you’re already registered for an online account with the agency.

Plus, if you register for direct deposit and are owed a refund, you could get your payment within eight business days.

changes and new benefits

Every year, there are changes that could impact your income tax and benefit return, so it’s important to stay on top of things. This year’s changes include:

• Eligible first-time homebuyers can now withdraw up to $60,000 from their Registered Retirement Savings Plan (up from $35,000) to buy or build a qualifying home.

• If you operate a non-compliant short-term rental property, you can’t deduct any related expenses incurred during the portion of the tax year where it is non-compliant. For 2024, there is an exception that as long as your property became compliant with the applicable laws of the municipality or province where it is located by December 31, 2024, you are considered compliant for all of 2024.

• If you’re a volunteer firefighter or a search-and-rescue volunteer and completed at least 200 hours of service last year, the amount your credit is based on has increased from $3,000 to $6,000. Learn more about tax-filing changes at canada.ca/taxes-whats-new. ■ — News Canada

5 ways to get the work-life balance you need

In this connected world, it’s all too easy to let work obligations cut into your personal time. While greater flexibility is crucial for many, it’s important not to let the idea of ‘working from anywhere’ lead to ‘always on the clock’. If you’re looking to bring more balance back into your life, start with these five tips.

Track your time

The first step to reclaiming balance is to find out where the imbalance lies. Put some effort into tracking your time for a week or two and see where and how it is being used. Many companies have online timetracking tools that you can trial for

free. Do some research to find the one that works best for you. Take this information and see if you can lessen distractions throughout the workday so that it doesn’t start crossing-over into your evenings or weekends.

Set boundaries

Prioritize your schedule and communicate your availability with colleagues and clients. Being clear on your work hours and response times will help reduce the need to check on work after hours or on your time off. If there is a need to check in after-hours, set a specific hour to do so and time limit for your responses.

Schedule breaks

Add breaks to your daily calendar so that not only is your time blocked off, but you’ll also get reminders that a break is needed. Whether it’s a 15-minute stand up and stretch or an hour-long lunch with a walk and some fresh air, taking time away from your desk will increase your overall productivity, help with creativity and reduce levels of stress.

Automate tasks

With today’s technology, automating tasks is a safe and reliable timesaver. For those that run their own business, cloud-based accounting software, such as FreshBooks, can

save you time by automating processes to create invoices, track expenses and calculate taxes, leaving more time to focus on the rest of the business.

Set priorities

Plan your day the night before and prioritize your tasks by their importance and urgency (high, medium and low) along with how much effort will be involved to complete them. Once the priorities are set, block out time on your calendar for the high and medium ones and the lower priorities can be worked on in between. 10 THINGS your mover will not do

When you hire a moving company, it is important to understand what services the firm can and cannot provide. At Two Men and a Truck – Canada, we pride ourselves on accommodating our clients in every possible way. But there are some requests that pose problems. There are 10 common issues that most movers won’t do, or are forbidden to do by law.

move containers of fuel or hazardous materials

1 2

Gas-powered items such as lawn mowers that are not emptied of fuel cannot be moved by your moving company. This is in accordance with Ontario’s Health and Safety Act and Hazard Materials Act. The law prohibits us from transporting these types of goods.

move live plants

Many movers, including our company, have their own guidelines about this. Securing plants takes a level of special treatment that we are not prepared to offer. If customers need advice on how to move plants, we can help them find companies that are equipped to do so. In our

experience, most customers move plants themselves.

move items larger than we have the ability to do

When we see items that are too big and bulky for us to handle, we will let you know. Upright pianos, for example, are incredibly heavy and usually require heavy-duty dollies and a truck with a lift gate. We can definitely help you with any size of piano. Massive wall units can also present challenges. We can help you find the right firm to move those specialty items, if required.

3

move personal valuables

5

moving animals

Moving animals takes special care, and movers are not willing to take responsibility for pets during a move. You are best to arrange for them to be somewhere else on moving day, and then ease them into their new surroundings yourself.

provide insurance coverage for all items

4

It makes sense that small valuables like jewelry, stocks, bonds and cash are items you should transport yourself.

6

Ontario’s Conditions of Carriage requires movers to insure items at least 60 cents per pound. If our coverage does not include antiques or works of art, we can arrange it through our Insurer as long as these items are itemized upfront. Your homeowner insurance policy may also have a rider for goods in transit.

rearrange your furniture

Sometimes people ask us to rearrange their furniture at their destination, which adds to the time estimated for your move. We are happy to provide you with this service.

install major appliances

We are neither plumbers nor electricians. If you require installation of your major appliances, arrange to have those professionals help you during your moving week.

stop the clock because of a change on your end

We get paid from the time we leave our facility until the time we return. If you change the parameters of your contract or something unex-

pected happens on your end to cause a delay, the move continues on as planned but will likely extend longer than your estimate.

load pre-packed boxes, items into a storage pod

We do not do “load only moves.” If someone else is driving the vehicle and the goods are not under our control, we can’t take responsibility for the condition of the goods at their final destination.

All of the above help ensure that your possessions arrive at the other end in one piece, with the safety of you, your family and the movers in mind. And, that’s our job!

regain control of your finances this year

When people struggle to pay off their debt, it can add a lot of stress to their lives. Financial stress can even lead to health problems, including everything from insomnia to more serious issues like high blood pressure and depression. If paying down your debt is becoming a challenge, small actions can make a difference.

assess your debt load

and set a timeframe for all your

debts

Start by making a list of all your debts. Then, set goals for paying down your debts and track your debt-repayment progress. Prioritize paying down high-interest debts first. That way, you’ll pay less interest over the term of your loan. If you have multiple highinterest debts, consider consolidating them into a single loan with a lower

interest rate. Consolidating your debts means you’ll only have to make one monthly payment rather than pay each one individually.

review your budget

Review your budget carefully to see where you can cut costs to rebalance your spending to debt-repayment ratio. If you don’t have a budget, take some time to make one. Having a budget that lays out your income and expenses is an effective way to manage your day-to-day finances. To help you get started, try the Financial Consumer Agency’s online budget planner tool. It will help you identify areas where you can cut expenses to put more money towards paying down your debt.

seek advice

If you’re struggling to keep up with payments, be proactive and contact your bank or creditor immediately. There could be options available to you.

Banks are expected to help individuals who are struggling to pay their mortgages due to exceptional circumstances such as high household debt, increased cost of living and rapid increases in interest rates. For example, they could offer you a lower interest rate on your debt, extend your payments over a longer period and reduce your minimum monthly payment amount.

You may also consider consulting a financial advisor or credit counsellor for guidance. If you are considering that option, make sure that the agency is in good standing with a provincial or national association. And remember that no reputable credit counselling agency will charge you for the first meeting.

Managing your debt isn’t always easy, but there are resources to help you. Find unbiased and fact-based information you can count on at canada.ca/money. ■ — News Canada
