up front BACK TO SCHOOL

As we get ready for back to school, some parents are joyful, exhausted and can’t wait for the doors to open. Others may not be anticipating letting go and being separated, particularly first-timers. The first day of school can be an emotional experience for parents and toddlers. Toddlers often feel anxious and scared when entering a new environment with unfamiliar faces. Parents may also feel nervous about leaving their child in someone else’s care.

Parents should prepare their toddlers for the first day of school to ease the transition. Consider reading books about school, visiting the school beforehand, and discussing the experience positively. Parents need to discuss concerns and special needs with the teacher.

Another critical factor is that parents should remain calm and confident, as their children will pick up on their emotions. A child may cry or cling to their mother initially, but with time and reassurance, they will adjust. With time, the first day of school can become a positive and exciting experience for parents and toddlers.

As children grow up and become more independent without you, they must learn about boundaries and

how to communicate them effectively. This includes setting boundaries around physical touch, which should always be based on mutual respect and thoughtful communication. By teaching kids these skills early on, we can help them develop healthy relationships and prevent discomfort or harm.

One way to teach kids about boundaries is to start with simple concepts like personal space. Encourage children to recognize and respect their personal space and that of others. This can be done through games or physical activities, such as playing catch or dancing. As they become more comfortable with personal space, you can introduce the concept of boundaries around physical touch.

When discussing physical touch, it is essential to emphasize the importance of consent. Children should understand that they have the right to say no to any physical touch that makes them uncomfortable and always ask for permission before touching someone else. By teaching kids about boundaries and consent, we can help them develop healthy relationships and a strong sense of self-respect.

BACK TO SCHOOL BACKPACK TIPS

Summer is winding down, and the calendar is circled, marking the first day of school. In the meantime, the back-to-school list is quickly filling up with the usual suspects of must-haves and nice-to-haves.

However, if one item is on the top of the list, it’s the purchase of a new backpack. Now we know buying a backpack for your child can be a challenging task – especially since they only care if it’s cool. We get it. Yes, you want it to be fun and something they’ll like, but you also want to ensure the backpack is comfortable and provides good support. After all, that backpack will carry all their worldly treasures – from their lunch to gym shoes, books, a water bottle, hand sanitizer and all those special items they may pick up along the way to and from school.

So, before shopping for your child’s new backpack, check out this checklist and advice from Canadian chiropractors on choosing and using a bag wisely.

- Select a backpack proportionate to your child’s body size and weight. A bag should not exceed 75 per cent of the length of your child’s back

and should not exceed 10 per cent of your child’s weight for elementary students or 15 per cent for high school students. Avoid oversized or heavy materials that add unnecessary load on their shoulders and spine.

- Look for a backpack with multiple compartments, thickly cushioned straps, and a waist strap. We know kids don’t like waist straps, but it does help distribute the weight evenly and prevent the bag from sagging too low. The backpack should hang below the shoulders and sit about two inches above the waist. The straps should be at least two inches wide and adjusted to fit snugly on your child’s body. If you can’t slide your hand between the backpack and your child’s back, the bag is too snug.

- Help your kids learn how to pack their backpacks wisely by having them place the heaviest items close to their body and the lighter ones on the outside. This helps maintain your child’s balance and posture. Avoid overloading the bag with unnecessary items or leaving it unzipped. Use both straps to

carry the bag and avoid slinging it over one shoulder, which can cause muscle strain and spinal misalignment.

- Check your child’s backpack regularly for signs of wear and tear and replace it if needed. Also, monitor your children’s posture and comfort when they wear their bags. If you notice them leaning forward or backward, having difficulty balancing or complaining of pain or numbness, it may be time to lighten the load or consult a chiropractor.

- Try to have your children reduce the amount of stuff they are carrying. You don’t want them to be carrying the world on their backs. They should only take what they need for that day. If they have access to a locker, have them store some of their things at school and only bring home what they need for homework or studying.

These tips can help you and your children enjoy a healthy and happy school year. Most importantly, remember to make sure your children are visible. If backpack or coat has no reflective properties, add some

reflective tape, or purchase reflective lights to ensure they can be seen. Safety first.

And as a refresher for the first day back to school, here are a few tips from the Canada Safety Council and Elmer the Safety Elephant.

1. Be bright: Wear clothing with retroreflective patches and make sure your bicycle has reflectors and a light.

2. Ensure drivers have seen you before you step off the curb by making eye contact.

3. Leave the phone alone and turn down the tunes when crossing the street.

4. If there is no sidewalk, use the left side of the road facing traffic.

5. And of course, look ALL ways before crossing a street, driveway, or alley.

parenting tips

BREAK FREE FROM REACTIVE PARENTING TEACHES REFRESHINGLY EFFECTIVE AND PROVEN MINDFUL PARENTING PRACTICES

Many parents can relate to the challenges of juggling the day-today responsibilities and stresses of maintaining busy schedules while raising young children. It’s easy to get so focused on the immediate situations and take a reactive approach to a children’s behaviour rather than an interactive one. However, responding to children’s tantrums or other behaviours by yelling, bribing or other ineffective methods can cause more stress and lead to feelings of guilt and remorse.

Laura Linn Knight knows this firsthand. As an elementary school teacher, certified Positive Discipline Educator, parent coach and mother of two, she thought raising her children would be just as easy as managing a classroom of 25 young children. However, she soon realized parenting her own children was very different

than managing a classroom full of other parent’s children when an incident occurred with her son.

After her then three-year-old son hit her on leg, Knight reacted by yelling at him in an awful loud, mommy-yelling tone. Her response left her feeling like a bad parent. Racked with guilt, she knew this was not the type of parenting style she wanted, so Knight began researching different parenting methods. However, what she found on the market sounded very theoretical and were ineffective for her.

Knight knew there had to be a better way to respond to her children so she began researching different parenting techniques. After extensive research, she discovered positive discipline, a way of teaching children in a mutually respectful and encouraging manner. She incorporated this with other parenting tools based on mindfulness, somatics, and science to develop her own successful parenting approach.

After developing a successful career as a parent educator, Knight wrote and published her first book, Break Free from Reactive Parenting. The information and resources in her book teach parents how to use self-regulation, mindfulness, and interactive practical routines instead of the more ineffective approaches like yelling, bribery, and other passive parenting styles to develop healthy relationships with their children.

Break Free from Reactive Parenting addresses common parenting issues and teaches parents how to create a calmer and happier environment. The

research and parenting techniques highlighted in Break Free from Reactive Parenting are based on factual and scientifically proven methods of positive parenting.

Self regulation and mindful parenting approaches are not just a trend. They are proven methods that have a positive and long lasting effect on a child’s social, and physical development. Through positive parenting, children learn how to regulate their own situations, boundaries, and solve problem in a positive and mindful way. They grow up to be more confident, well rounded, and healthy adults.

Break Free from Reactive Parenting is a meaningful resource that offers reassurance and encouragement to parents. Self regulation helps parents and their children learn to articulate themselves better and respond to situations calmly and constructively.

Today, many parents and youth are struggling. At a time when parents feel the strain of the media’s perfectionist perceptions surrounding family and parenting, all while youth need more support than ever, Knight’s book offers hope and empowerment. It reinforces the message to parents that they are good enough. Break Free from Reactive Parenting offers encouragement while teaching families how to turn chaos into calm. The book has resources and chapters written exclusively for parents as well as sections for both parents and children.

Knight’s book is for parents with children of all ages. It’s been on the market since last fall and is currently available online and in different stores throughout the United States and Canada. Knight also has her own blog and has been interviewed by several news channels.

RUBY CRATE: FROM IDEA TO AWARD-WINNING MOTHER-DAUGHTER BUSINESS

The first year of the COVID-19 pandemic was a time of uncertainty and challenges, but it was also a time of opportunity. For Heidi and Sienna Avery, a mother-daughter duo from Ontario, an impromptu event in March 2020 sparked an idea for an incredible home-based business venture that is still going strong today.

Heidi Avery was looking online for a teen subscription box to buy as a surprise for her daughter, Sienna. Despite an extensive search, she couldn’t find anything suitable for a teenage girl. This experience started a conversation between the mother and daughter and the idea to create their own teen girl subscription box business.

Heidi used her marketing background expertise and Sienna used her expertise in teenage trends to form Ruby Crate. After months of planning, designing, researching products, and preparing their boxes, Ruby Crate launched in September 2020.

The name Ruby Crate was inspired by Sienna’s great-grandmother whose first name was Ruby. Her great-grandmother was a well-liked, kind, and generous person, traits that define everything their business represents. Rubies are also precious gemstones. This contributed to their decision because according to Sienna, “every girl who gets a Ruby Crate should feel like a precious gem.”

Today, Ruby Crate is a successful mother-daughter home-based business that has sold and shipped boxes of goodies throughout Canada, the United States, and Australia.

Currently, shoppers can buy Ruby Crate boxes as an annual subscription or as a single purchase. The annual subscription includes four seasonal boxes, one sent during each season: spring, summer, winter, and fall. Single boxes can be purchased anytime throughout the year. They make a great gift for birthdays and other celebrations or occasions.

Mini Ruby Crate boxes are geared for young girls between four to seven years of age and the teen boxes are

made for girls between eight to 17 years old. Each teen box comes with 10 items including unique beauty and skincare products, fun gadgets, and other special items catered to teenage girls. Young girls receive Mini-Crate, a smaller version of the Ruby Crate. Mini-Crate contain five products geared for the younger age group. This year, Ruby Crate is also selling Campus Crate for young women 18 years and older. These boxes have products for university

and college students. The Campus Crate are available in summer and fall.

Since starting their business, Heidi and Sienna have been featured in several news and television segments. Ruby Crate was also part of the VIP package at a fashion show during New York City’s Fashion Week in February and were distributed to teenage celebrities and influencers during a young celebrity and influencer party.

The unique products in each Ruby Crate are sourced through local, Canadian and some American suppliers and are not commonly found in popular retail businesses. Knowing there is something special about getting a box full of goodies delivered to you is one of the reasons Heidi and Sienna don’t disclose what products are in the boxes before they are shipped. They want the girls who receive them to have the full experience of being delightfully surprised and excited when they receive and open their Ruby Crate.

In three short years, Ruby Crate has become Canada’s #1 Subscription Box for Girls and won the A Year of Boxes Best Teen Box 2021 and 2022 awards.

Working together in a motherdaughter-run business is a dream opportunity for Heidi and Sienna. During the last three years, they have grown closer and learned from each other while doing something that inspires others.

Ruby Crate subscription boxes are available on their website rubycrate.ca

Four stout towers, bastions of the former British Empire, ring Kingston’s waterfront and capture our imagination. Known as Martello Towers, they are a reminder of days when our neighbour to the south was occasionally less than friendly.

Of the four, one – Murney Tower –is open to the public as a living history museum. Step through the thick limestone walls and be transported back to the mid-19th century.

Murney Tower was built in response to the Oregon Crisis of 1846, when war between Britain and the United States almost erupted because of American President James K. Polk’s insistence that his nation had sole ownership over the then-shared Oregon Territory.

As tensions rose, a series of fortifications were built around Kingston, including Murney Tower. Only fourteen Martello Towers were ever built in Canada, and only nine survive today.

Martello Towers are squat, round towers whose thick limestone walls were considered fireproof and bombproof. Murney Tower features some differences from the typical Martello structure as seen across the British Empire. The most obvious is the gun platform, which in a typical Martello Tower would

travel

MURNEY TOWER, KINGSTON

be clover-shaped to house three guns. In contrast, the gun platform on Murney Tower is circular to hold two cannons, a 24-pounder, and a 32-pounder. Only one, a 32-pounder cannon, was ever installed, and it remains at the Tower today. It’s a big gun.

The Tower was more than an artillery emplacement. There are two other levels, one with sleeping berths for almost two dozen soldiers and occasionally their families, and the other a basement for storage. Extending from the basement are four ‘caponiers’, essentially wings, that extend out from the Tower. Each one is studded with rifle loopholes through which soldiers could fire on attacking infantry. Murney Tower never saw a shot fired so we have no idea how it would have fared in battle.

Today, Murney Tower houses a museum boasting more than a thousand artifacts that tell the

domestic and military history of Kingston. The largest artifact, of course, is the tower itself, which was designated a National Historic Site of Canada in 1930 and, more recently, an UNESCO World Heritage Site. Kids will love the castle-like interior, undoubtedly fueling their imagination for days after.

Lingokids recently launched a neurodiverse category for children with neurodivergent conditions. Neurodiversity means a person’s brain works differently than a neurotypical one.

Each neurodiverse condition has its own style of learning and retaining information. The team at Lingokids respects this and strives to create learning programs that celebrate and support all learning needs. The app’s new neurodiverse category offers a variety of tools and activities to meet

LINGOKIDS CELEBRATES WITH NEW LEARNING CATEGORY

JUST THE FACTS

The neurodiverse category has learning tools and content selections for five neurodivergent conditions:

• Autism Spectrum Conditions (ASC)

• Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)

• Dyslexia

• Dysgraphia

• Dyscalculia

the needs of its young learners.

The idea to create a neurodiverse learning category started after parents of children with neurodiverse conditions wrote to the company to say how much the app was helping their children learn.

After listening to the parents as well as adults with neurodiverse conditions, the Lingokids board hired neuro specialists to create the best programs for their users in this new category. The neurodiverse category has learning tools and content selections for five neurodivergent conditions:

• Autism Spectrum Conditions (ASC)

• Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)

• Dyslexia

• Dysgraphia

• Dyscalculia

The content in this category is designed to help children learn specific skills, recognize, and understand their emotions, develop, and improve skills like selfregulation, focus, attention, reading, writing, math, and other essential

academic and developmental skills while supporting each child’s individual learning style and strengths.

The new category has a selection of educational songs, games, and activities for children to choose from on different topics and skills. Each skill or topic has different levels so children can develop and expand their knowledge naturally through fun and interactive play.

Lingokids was founded in 2015. It originally began as an English language development app but has since evolved into an effective and high quality learning tool that teaches children a variety of modern skills that are vital to their growth and development. The app is currently available in almost 200 countries and is used in schools and homes

around the world to teach kids essential traditional and modern skills.

In less than a decade, Lingokids app has grown to be one of the best learning technology tools for children under 10 years of age. The app has won multiple awards for its high-quality, interactive activities, and learning tools. For the last two years, it has been recognized as the number one children’s learning app in the United States.

The company has a team of over 150 employees, many of whom are experts in child development. Each member brings their own skillset and knowledge that are used to create the highest quality digital learning tools and activities so all children can excel in their developmental and learning needs.

THE PANDEMIC’S EFFECT ON HEAD LICE AND WHAT PARENTS NEED TO KNOW

Like everyone and everything, head lice were impacted by the pandemic. With the decrease in social contact, shutdowns, online learning, and the like, the incidence of head lice plummeted. This sounds like great news for parents.

However, while cases have declined, they have also been more contained in family units and the cases we have seen have often been more severe. Post-pandemic, with the welcome return of all things social, outbreaks are on the rise.

Head lice are designed to survive. They’ve been a nuisance to humanity since the beginning of time. They are the second most communicable affliction next to the common cold in children. Over time, head lice have adapted and may be resistant to most over-the-counter products, they camouflage themselves in every colour of hair, and they can take hours and days of work to eradicate. It’s therefore important that head lice get back on the radar of teachers, parents, and caregivers.

What is a parent or caregiver to do with this information? Quite simply:

• Be proactive by learning the “Facts of Lice.”

• Plan your treatment protocol by exploring the safe and natural head lice care and product options that are available.

• Practice prevention.

• Start screening regularly.

There are many head lice removal clinics and in-home services across

Canada that offer head lice screening and removal services. Not only can they assist with the process and offer products to help the do-it-yourself people, but they also educate and show you how it is done.

Not all head lice removal products are the same. Look for remedies that offer nontoxic and natural ways of removing head lice. Products made with minerals, enzymes and essential oils are very effective in the reduction and removal process. Natural oil soaks combined with reduction combing are an excellent choice. Be careful with products containing synthetic or naturally occurring pesticides or harsh chemicals. Not only are these not

healthy choices for people, especially children, but they also have a negative impact on our planet.

Learn how to be proactive and prevent head lice in the first place. There is a great deal of information online about how to avoid getting head lice and what to do if you happen to get them. Just be sure to consult a reliable and trusted resource.

Excellent information is available at headlice.org (a US-based non-profit organization).

Dawn Mucci is Canada’s leading head lice removal expert and the founder of LiceSquad.com - a national head lice removal franchise system that has helped over two million people deal with head lice. AUGUST SPECIAL FOCUS

WHERE DISCOVERY IGNITES LEARNING Bishop Strachan School

The Bishop Strachan School is a leading independent JK - Grade 12 day and boarding school for girls. For more than 150 years, we have inspired our students to be fearless and educated them to be leaders. Our rigorous curriculum embraces an equity mindset and prepares students for university and beyond. Our approach teaches students to learn deeply and build the skills to make positive change. They are encouraged to find their voice, to work collaboratively, and learn to lead. BSS students grow into compassionate and ethical citizens. Learning at BSS is inquiry-based. We see young students as individuals who are inherently capable and curious, with a powerful potential to learn. With an equity mindset, students approach learning critically. They gain the ability to recognize and respond to bias wherever they encounter it. They learn to take action to create equitable environments inside and outside of the classroom.

In the Junior School (Junior Kindergarten to Grade 6), inspired by the Reggio Emilia Approach, students engage in investigations and projects that build a strong academic foundation in mathematics, literacy, and research.

In the Middle years (Grades 7 and 8), students hone these core academic skills. They learn to think critically, ask good questions, and solve challenging problems. They tackle collaborative projects that combine subject areas.

In the Senior School (Grades 9 to 12), students continue to learn about themselves and their capabilities through rigorous, challenging learning experiences. In Grades 11 and 12, students can take Advanced Placement (AP) courses in nine

subject areas. They are well-prepared for university with strong critical thinking, analytical and research skills.

These innovative learning experiences happen in the context of an inclusive girls school. Girls are leaders in every aspect of school life. As a result, they are more likely to take risks, speak their minds and develop a strong sense of self. They grow in confidence and resilience.

Our 7.5-acre campus includes STEAM-focused learning spaces;

arts, design technology, multimedia and film labs; and a new turf field -- the first in Ontario at a girls’ school. With an emphasis on spaces that foster connectedness, belonging and accessibility, BSS is a unique intersection of old and new -- from the stained glass and leaded windows of our 108-yearold building, to the open-concept classrooms designed to spark curiosity and collaboration in our STEAM wing.

As an inclusive girls’ school, we foster a sense of belonging by affirming our diverse community. We integrate diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging into learning both inside and outside the classroom, through connections to our inquirybased curriculum, student-led initiatives and co-curriculars. And with more than $2 million available in financial assistance, we ensure that more students discover themselves at BSS.

LEARNERS TODAY, LEADERS TOMORROW Northmount School

Northmount School is a Catholic independent boys preparatory school (JK – 8). Its supportive environment helps boys achieve their greatest potential, emphasizing academic excellence, character development, values and service, which lead to a meaningful, balanced and fulfilling life.

Northmount School provides a sound, stimulating and coherent education to prepare boys in their development as responsible citizens. The school helps each student to reach his full potential, develop critical thinking skills, self-discipline, a respect for others, and a strong moral character. We recognize that the parents are the boys’ first teachers and thus we enter into a partnership

between parents, students and the school to establish a rich and vibrant community life.

We deeply respect and are guided by our tradition, its spirituality, appeal to the common good, and its values. We are multi-cultural and our students come from a wide variety of backgrounds. Our Catholic roots encourage a belief in the dignity of every person and a respect for a variety of faith traditions.

Our boys learn to support one another in a nurturing environment; one that is made possible by our superior and highly committed staff who are dedicated to implementing Northmount’s goals. The world’s next generation will need leadership from responsible individuals who

are morally sound and whose values speak to the Truth. For boys who aspire to have character when men, the journey begins at Northmount.

Our school community finds its foundations in the teaching of the Catholic Church. Families of all faiths, however, are welcome, as we see our school as a microcosm of society. We teach from a Catholic perspective and this informs how we teach, understand right from wrong, and guide our boys to manhood.

The family plays an important role in Northmount’s vision for education. As the primary educators in their children’s lives, parents are active in the academic, co-curricular and faith development of their boys and in

helping them to develop character. The school seeks out opportunities to engage with the family to round out the experiences in a young boy’s life.

Our academic program is one of which our school community is extremely proud, and our dedicated teachers ascribe to pedagogy that focuses on the needs of boys using contemporary tools. As a single-sex school and with significant research to back this focus, Northmount ensures that boys develop the necessary academic skills to find success in high school and beyond.

We would love to have the opportunity to host your family for a visit. Please book a tour and find out more about how Northmount could be the right school for your son.

Olivet students come from a variety of cultural backgrounds to share in this journey of developing their gifts and potential.

Our teachers build students’ foundations for learning in academic subjects and in the skills needed to continue their development beyond Olivet School.

On the day they leave Olivet School, they are prepared to succeed wherever their future leads.

The Olivet School community places great value on the role of parents in their own child’s education and we support this through frequent communication and opportunities for parents to get involved in activities.

We offer small student-teacher ratios and an affordable tuition. This is possible through a robust scholarship endowment given over the years by alumni and friends who believe in our caring approach to education.

Since 1893, Olivet School has been preparing children for tomorrow’s complex challenges. Meet with us to learn more about preparing your child for later school and for living a useful, happy life.

TEACHING CHILDREN WITH LEARNING DIFFERENCES Vianney Academy

Vianney Academy specializes in teaching children with learning differences, and offers a full-day program, tutoring, and summer camps.

In Vianney’s full-day elementary program students have an opportunity to not only get an excellent education, but also participate in therapies and programs throughout the day that allow them to overcome their particular learning challenges. Our focus is on students who are struggling with the core subjects of reading, writing, spelling, grammar, and math. Our unique classroom style allows students to work independently while getting support from their teachers. We incorporate outdoor play and exercise to enhance each child’s

mental well-being which contributes to their success in the classroom. Students learn organizational skills, self-regulation, self-assessment of personal success, how and when to ask for help, and how to work independently. One of the therapies that we incorporate into our program is Neurodevelopment Through

Movement. Neurodevelopment

Through Movement is a therapy that builds and corrects pathways in the brain that affect how children take in information.

Our tutoring services are unique. The difference is our tutors. They have extensive and rigorous training and certification in our teaching

methods. They understand how to identify, address, and overcome different kinds of reading difficulties. Our tutors are compassionate, patient and kind. They understand the value that reading can add to your child’s life and are dedicated to making that a reality. They aim to instill confidence and determination in all their students.

Vianney’s summer camps are a perfect blend of summer fun and learning. We offer a hands-on learning experience incorporating math and literacy skills as well as weekly visits to local parks and splash pads.

Vianney Academy offers its services to families and children of all learning abilities or disabilities such as gifted, dyslexia, ADD, ADHD, autism, and global learning disorder within the community.
