Discovering treasures, one fair at a time!
Exploring the Rich Tapestry of Collecting
A Journey Through Antiques, Collectables, & Memorabilia
In the world of collecting, there exists a vast and diverse universe of treasures waiting to be discovered. From the timeless elegance of antique furniture to the whimsical charm of vintage toys and the nostalgic allure of film memorabilia, collectors are drawn to a myriad of niches, each offering a unique glimpse into history, culture, and creativity. Join us as we embark on a journey through the rich tapestry of collecting across various niches, from antiques to collectibles and memorabilia.
Antiques: Preserving the Past
At the heart of the collecting world lies the allure of antiques—timeless treasures that bear witness to the craftsmanship and culture of bygone eras. From intricately carved furniture to delicate porcelain and gleaming silverware, antiques offer collectors a tangible connection to the past, each piece steeped in history and heritage.
Antique collectors are drawn to the beauty, craftsmanship, and historical
significance of their chosen pieces. Whether exploring the elegance of Victorian furniture, the simplicity of farmhouse decor, or the opulence of Renaissance art, collectors find fulfilment in preserving and celebrating the legacy of past generations.
Collectibles: Embracing Diversity
In the realm of collectibles, diversity reigns supreme, with enthusiasts drawn to an eclectic array of niches spanning pop culture, hobbies, and interests. From comic books and trading cards to vintage cameras and rare coins, collectibles offer a fascinating glimpse into the passions and pursuits of collectors around the world.
Collectors of niche items often form tight-knit communities, sharing knowledge, trading items, and celebrating their shared interests. Whether it’s tracking down the rarest variant of a beloved action figure, completing a set of limited edition stamps, or showcasing a prized collection of vintage vinyl records, collectibles collectors find joy in the thrill of the hunt and the camaraderie of fellow enthusiasts.
Memorabilia: Capturing Moments In Time
Memorabilia collectors are drawn to the magic of nostalgia, seeking out artefacts and mementos that capture the essence of their favourite moments in history, entertainment, and sports. From movie posters and autographed memorabilia to sports jerseys and concert tickets, memorabilia collectors preserve and celebrate the iconic moments and personalities that have shaped our culture.
Each piece of memorabilia tells a story—a snapshot of a moment frozen in time, immortalized in the hearts and minds of fans and collectors alike. Whether it’s reliving the excitement of a classic film premiere, commemorating a historic sporting event, or paying homage to a beloved musician, memorabilia collectors find joy in the memories and connections forged through their collections.
Embark on your collecting journey today and unlock the wonders of the past, the present, and the countless treasures waiting to be discovered. From antique furniture to vintage toys, rare collectibles to iconic memorabilia, the world of collecting invites you to embrace history, celebrate culture, and create lasting memories that will be cherished for generations to come.
MOVIE MEMORABILIA
Long before cinemas lit up towns across the UK, autograph hunters would linger patiently outside theatres, hoping to catch a glimpse of touring actors and snag a signature from these early stars. With the rise of the film industry came a whole new world of collectible treasures—from props and costumes to signed photos, posters, and scripts. Fans around the world have long prized these pieces of movie history, and what began as a niche interest has grown into a thriving and lucrative industry.
In the early to mid-20th century, film studios often failed to recognise the potential value of
such memorabilia. Cost-cutting meant that props and costumes were frequently reused or simply stored away for later productions. Nonetheless, some items found their way into private hands— spirited away by crew members, extras, or even the actors themselves.
A turning point came in 1970, when Kirk Kerkorian took over MGM and appointed James Thomas Aubrey Jr. as president. Aubrey made the bold decision to auction off the contents of seven sound stages. Auctioneer David Weisz purchased the entire lot for $1.5 million. Among the highlights were the original Time Machine,
“Collecting Movie Memorabilia Is A Fun & Pleasant Hobby”
which sold for $10,000, and Dorothy’s iconic Ruby Slippers, which fetched $15,000.
That landmark sale featured over 350,000 wardrobe pieces and thousands of props, including the full-sized ship used in Mutiny on the Bounty. The event not only made headlines—it effectively launched the modern movie memorabilia market. Actress Debbie Reynolds famously acquired many of the items, kickstarting her legendary collection. Unsold pieces were sent to the MGM Grand Hotel in Las Vegas, where they were displayed or sold in the hotel’s gift shop.
Since then, the market has continued to boom, with iconic items commanding staggering prices. In 2011, Marilyn Monroe’s famous white subway dress sold for $4.6 million at the auction of Reynolds’ collection, while a blue gingham dress worn by Judy Garland in The Wizard of Oz went
for $910,000.
The internet—and a certain popular online auction platform—has revolutionised the trade in memorabilia. Collectors can now browse a vast range of items, from autographs and posters to film cells and wardrobe pieces, often at surprisingly low prices. Many dealers now operate primarily online, making it easier for fans to track down rare or specific items. Prices have also become more consistent, thanks to easier comparison shopping.
Still, it’s wise to exercise caution. As with any area of collecting, the market is rife with fakes. Online platforms can be impersonal and risky, offering limited protection if something goes wrong. To ensure authenticity and condition, it’s best to buy from trusted, reputable dealers— and ideally, inspect items in person before committing.
Salvage Architectural
Breathing New Life into the Past
With the rise of home makeover shows and glossy interior design magazines offering endless inspiration, the architectural salvage industry has seen a significant boom in the UK in recent years. A growing interest in sustainability, recycling, and upcycling has only fueled the trend. While reusing materials like timber, fireplaces, or antique baths is far from a new idea, media attention has brought it firmly into the spotlight.
From ornate Elizabethan fixtures to eye-catching mid-century modern designs, including iconic G Plan pieces and vintage Scandinavian styles, today’s home décor often pays homage to the past. For many, blending old and new has become the hallmark of great design.
When older buildings are scheduled for demolition, professional salvage teams are often brought in first to rescue anything of value—architectural details, fixtures, fittings—all of which can be refurbished and repurposed. Environmentally, it’s a responsible approach, but it also makes perfect sense from a design standpoint. Architectural antiques can be both beautiful and functional.
These salvaged items can be incorporated in countless ways. Structural elements like old beams and joists can be exposed for character and charm. Decorative features such as claw-footed bathtubs, stained glass panels, or vintage fireplaces can add authenticity and personality to both modern and period homes. A piece of stained glass, for example, can transform an interior wall, adding light and colour without compromising privacy. Meanwhile, antique sanitary ware offers a stylish alternative to modern plastic fittings.
In addition to architectural elements, restored antique furniture has also become a popular choice for those looking to add depth and character to their interiors. From lovingly refinished Victorian dressers to reupholstered Art Deco armchairs, these pieces offer a unique blend of craftsmanship and history that’s hard to replicate with modern flat-pack alternatives. Whether fully restored or left with just the right amount of patina, antique furniture can serve as a statement piece or a subtle complement to a carefully curated space.
Whether you’re renovating a period property or adding character to a contemporary space, the key is selecting items that suit the scale and style of your home. A well-chosen piece can anchor a room, becoming a stunning focal point or a subtle nod to heritage. And the best part? Most salvage dealers are deeply passionate about what they do. Don’t hesitate to ask questions—they’re usually more than happy to share their knowledge and help you find the perfect piece for your project.
The Timeless Appeal of Militaria
In a world marked by shifting borders, conflicts, and alliances, the artefacts of warfare hold a unique fascination. From antique weapons to military uniforms, medals, and equipment, militaria offers collectors a tangible connection to the triumphs, tragedies, and sacrifices of the past. But what drives individuals to collect these relics of war, and what treasures lie waiting to be discovered in the world of militaria?
Unveiling the Enigma of Militaria
Militaria encompasses a vast array of objects spanning centuries of human history. From ancient swords and armour to modern firearms and battlefield relics, these artefacts offer a window into the evolution of warfare and the cultures that shaped it. For some collectors, the allure of militaria lies in its historical significance, providing
“Providing
insights into history”
insights into military tactics, technology, and the experiences of soldiers on the front lines. For others, it’s a matter of preserving the memory of past conflicts and honouring the sacrifices made by those who served.
The Art of Militaria Collecting
Collecting militaria requires more than just a passion for history; it demands a keen eye, meticulous research, and a deep respect for the artefacts and the stories they hold. Here are some essential tips for aspiring militaria collectors:
1. Educate Yourself: Before diving into collecting militaria, take the time to educate yourself about different eras, conflicts, and the objects associated with them. Books, documentaries, online forums, and museums are valuable resources for learning about military history and identifying authentic artefacts.
2. Focus Your Collection: Given the vastness of militaria, it’s essential to narrow your focus to specific eras, regions, or types of artefacts that interest you most. Whether you’re drawn to World War II memorabilia, Civil War relics, or ancient weaponry, having a clear focus will help you build a cohesive and meaningful collection.
3. Verify Authenticity: With the proliferation of reproductions and fakes in the militaria
market, verifying the authenticity of artefacts is paramount. Look for distinguishing marks, manufacturer stamps, or provenance documentation to confirm the legitimacy of an item. Consulting experts or joining collectors’ communities can also provide valuable insights and authentication assistance.
4. Respect History: As custodians of history, militaria collectors have a responsibility to treat artefacts with care and respect. Proper storage, handling, and conservation techniques are essential for preserving the integrity of these objects for future generations. Additionally, be mindful of the ethical considerations surrounding certain types of militaria, such as items with controversial symbols or associations.
5. Connect with Fellow Collectors: One of the joys of militaria collecting is the sense of camaraderie and community among enthusiasts. Whether you’re attending collectors’ shows, joining online forums, or visiting historical reenactments, connecting with fellow collectors allows you to share knowledge, exchange stories, and expand your understanding of militaria.
The Rewards of Militaria Collecting
Beyond the thrill of acquiring rare artefacts, militaria collecting offers a deeply enriching and meaningful experience. Each piece in a collection represents a chapter in the larger narrative of human conflict, shedding light on the courage, sacrifice, and resilience of those who served. By preserving these artefacts and their stories, collectors play a vital role in honouring the past and ensuring that future generations never forget the lessons of history.
In a world marked by rapid change and uncertainty, the study and collection of militaria provide a sense of continuity and perspective. By exploring the artefacts of war, we gain a deeper understanding of the human experience and the enduring legacy of those who came before us. So, whether you’re a seasoned collector or a newcomer to the world of militaria, consider embarking on your own journey of discovery and reflection. Who knows what treasures and insights await you along the way?

PHILATELY FOR BEGINNERS
The definition applies in its strictest sense to those devoted to the collection of postage stamps, but in a broader sense can also apply to the study and collection of postal history items from postcards to letters and much more. Traditionally these would be displayed in order of area and date issued, but more and more collectors are following a less linear approach to both collection and display.
The genre is absolutely vast, so many beginners tend to start with a theme of sorts, which is a very satisfying way of collecting as you begin to follow down various paths of study. Thematic philately appeals to many, as interests from other areas of your life can allow for a richer vein of collection. You might like wildlife, a particular country, a period in history or a military campaign which is of interest. Some collectors choose to cover a wider range of objects based perhaps in a small village or town of origin. Over time this might develop as postal routes and family link is become clearer. If you choose a theme which is somewhat familiar, you should have a certain knowledge which will help you to begin researching and the direction your collection will go in.
Postage stamps, postage due stamps, where a stamp has been under paid and requires payment on delivery and airmail postage stamps are all great places to start. It is impossible to collect absolutely everything, so a field of study should give you a focal point to begin your stamp collecting journey.
Start by visiting stamp fairs, and a good local
dealer should be able to point you in the right direction as to where to begin your searching.
Local philatelic societies are also an enormous help, top find you most relevant group visit the Association of British Philatelic Societies’ website at www.abps.org.uk or visit the National Philatelic Society website for a larger group at www.ukphilately.org.uk.
Your collection will likely grow apace, and many philatelists particularly enjoy exhibiting their finds. You may like to look at specialist display albums to display your stamps and documents, and some collectors like to take this even further into the field be exhibiting and even competing in front of likeminded philatelists in the more formal field of exhibiting. The exhibitions are usually a friendly, information filled environment filled with like-minded collectors and are usually a mine of information and research, providing excellent sourcing ideas and hidden knowledge. The act of exhibiting itself, and planning how to display your wares and the story that they tell is for many as much of an enjoyable as ownership in itself.
“Start by visiting stamp fairs, & a good local dealer should be able to point you in the right direction”
A Beginner’s Guide to
METAL DETECTING
Metal detecting isn’t just a hobby—it’s a thrilling journey through time, uncovering hidden treasures and forgotten stories beneath your feet. If you’re new to this exciting pursuit, here’s a quick-start guide to help you begin your adventure.
1. Choose the Right Equipment: Start with a beginner-friendly metal detector—easy to use, with adjustable settings for various environments. Essential accessories include headphones, a sturdy digging tool, and a pouch to safely carry your finds.
2. Pick the Right Spot: Research local parks, beaches, and public gathering areas— great places to start detecting. Always get permission before exploring private land and check local laws to ensure you’re detecting legally and responsibly.
3. Learn Your Machine: Spend time getting to know your detector. Read the manual, practice in your yard or local park, and learn to recognize different tones and signals. This will help you distinguish between trash and treasure.
4. Start Simple: Set realistic goals. Focus on high-traffic areas where coins and jewelry are commonly found. Don’t get discouraged if you don’t find something valuable right away—every outing is a learning experience.
5. Be Patient: Move slowly and sweep your detector in overlapping arcs. Listen for subtle changes in sound—some targets may be buried deeper or hidden under debris.
6. Respect the Environment: Fill in any holes, respect wildlife, and follow the “leave no trace” ethic. Responsible detecting helps protect the land and the hobby itself.
7. Enjoy the Journey: Most importantly, have fun! Each beep could lead to something amazing—an old coin, a lost ring, or a piece of history. With every step, you’re walking through stories waiting to be uncovered.
Grab your gear and start exploring—the adventure is just beneath the surface!
British Military Medals
Campaign and military medals can be a helpful tool for researchers looking to understand military history and can give a fascinating insight into military careers and imperial history. For more than 200 years, the British have, like many nations,
marked wars, campaigns and battles; fought, won and lost, by the award of medals. Sufficient numbers have made collecting medals a practical and enjoyable pastime. They are also a great size and style for collectors; relatively easy to care for,
“Medals can give a fascinating insight into military careers and imperial history”
simple to store and attractive as a display. Prices vary quite significantly meaning that beginners can start their collection relatively easily.
Roughly split in to two groups – official campaign medals awarded for service in active operations; and gallantry medals which have been awarded for specific acts, medals are a well established part of British military tradition, and have been collected by enthusiasts for almost as long. The hobby has in recent years become more than just about a collection, instead concentrating on the background of the recipient, and in some cases a military genealogy which can follow several generations of an entire family. This is commonly the case with medals for the World Wars of 1914-18 and 1939-45; few families escaped some military involvement in the great
conflicts of the 20th Century. Other collectors may concentrate on a particular regiment, or perhaps both sides in a specific battle awarded to opposing forces. Depending on the providence of your medals, you may be able to find out some fascinating information on the original recipient which can truly bring campaigns and battles back to life. Many will be inscribed with the name of the recipient which can be a good starting point; others may be sold by descendants or knowledgeable dealers who can give you the detail.
The CWGC (Commonwealth War Grave Commission) and OMRS (Orders, Medals and Research Society) are great places to start searching for information about the original owner of your medals.
Joining the Numismatic World
The dictionary defines numismatics as ‘the study of collecting coins, paper money, and medals’, but it is so much more than that. Numismatics is a vast, broad subject and whether you find it a fascinating hobby or build a career in the industry, each little aspect of numismatics is special. With a wide range of history, art and value, it is a captivating subject with many elements to be discovered; with each piece having its own story to tell. It is therefore safe to say, whether working in the numismatics industry or not, every day is different, with new discoveries to be made.
Numismatics consists of three core aspects: Coins, Paper money, and Medals, with many subgenres to each.
Ancient Numismatics: This branch focuses on coins from ancient civilisations, including Greeks, Romans, Egyptians and more. Coins from this period are fascinating, the way the coins were made is vastly different to modern day. Each one is a glimpse into the period, the political structures, and cultural exchanges of the time. These types of coins are extremely sought-after, collectable pieces, given their age and immense history.
Modern Numismatics: This element looks at the more recent periods of coinage, also containing extremely fascinating, beautiful coins. Many people collect 50ps and £2 coins as there are so many different variations minted. The coins can often signify an important event or are commemorative from an impactful time in history. An extremely notable coin in modern numismatics is the British gold sovereign. First minted under
Henry VII’s reign, the sovereign has grown to become a distinctive symbol of any numismatic collection, due in part, to its historical significance. However, of late it has also become a valuable trading asset as a result of the rise in global commodity markets.
Paper Money & Banknotes: While often overlooked, the study of banknotes is an impactful part of numismatics. It looks at the analysis of security features and intricate details of a note, such as threads, chief cashiers, and printing techniques as well as printing mistakes. Each note is different and can be perceived in many ways. Banknotes are often collected by how they are produced, for example, through their runs and series. By having a collection of notes that are part of a run or series their value can actually increase. Banknotes are extremely delicate and must be handled with care, as with all elements of numismatics.
Medals & Tokens: Not all numismatic items are intended for circulation. Commemorative medals and tokens form a great part of numismatics. Medals can be beautiful pieces of artwork, displaying insight into special events, and historical moments. Medals can be of all assorted styles and are created by designers. Medals and tokens have been produced for several different events and purposes such as, coronations or marriages, and are often created to commemorate a death.
Pursuing numismatics can offer an incredible journey into all different sorts of places, such as history, economics, art and so much more. As a
numismatist, you are not just collecting coins you are uncovering the stories that come with them. Whether it be that you are more drawn to modern coins, commemorative medals, or paper money, numismatics invites you to delve deeper into tangible fragments of the past.
Numismatics encourages critical thinking, attention to detail and an appreciation for history and aesthetic beauty. The sense of discovery, by finding a rare coin or developing new information from a piece in your collection, numismatics offers a deeply rewarding and intellectually stimulating profession or hobby.
Each coin is a piece of history, whether delving into the intricate designs of ancient coins, learning the legends on a medal, or discovering the art of the coins. Numismatics brings history to life. Numismatics is a pursuit that connects people with the past while also enriching understanding of the evolving nature of money.
There are so many ways to become involved with numismatics, each branch is special and unique and there is always something new to learn. Working in numismatics can be an extremely exclusive way to pursue your passions.
Working at a leading company or collecting privately can open eyes to an entirely new world full of coins, medals and so much more. This can help to envision history in a whole new light, seeing these unique pieces makes history come to life before people’s very eyes. Being able to work with these coins shows how undeniable history is,
helping to develop a passion for the past.
Before starting a career in numismatics, you may never have thought there could be so much to learn. Every day, stepping into the world of numismatics, there is always something new, and it is always exciting. Being surrounded by people who have studied this subject for over 30 years can be a huge inspiration, starting your journey with a flourish. No matter how long someone may have worked in this industry, it may feel like you are only just scratching the surface of the immense pool of knowledge that is numismatics, which only makes this passion even more enticing. There is still a huge amount to learn and working in a job where you can learn every day is an amazing opportunity.
Numismatics is far more than just collecting Coins, Medals, or Paper money, it is a journey travelling through time, history, culture, and artistry. Each piece offers a different insight into the past, allowing collectors and numismatists to unveil stories and history that spans centuries. Working in numismatics can be an eye-opening experience, strengthening a passion for history while consistently revealing new aspects that make people eager to learn more. As you continue to explore the vast world of numismatics, be reminded that this field is not only a hobby, but a passion that can connect us with the rich heritage of human civilisation.
