Promise of 131 new jobs as plans for Greggs and McDonald’s drive-thrus are revealed Plans have been revealed for adjoining McDonald’s and Greggs drive-thrus in Emersons Green. The fast food outlets would go near the Costa Coffee drivethru on land which had been earmarked for a pub/restaurant at the Harlequin Office Park development. The planning application, which has been submitted to South Gloucestershire Council by Greene King Commercial Investments Ltd, says that 34 full-time and 97 part-time jobs would be created at the two drive-thrus. The McDonald’s would be open round the clock while the Greggs would be open from 7am to 11pm each day. The site is accessed from Fieldfare via Folly Brook Road, which in turn links to the A4174 Ring Road. The Greggs would be closest to the Costa outlet and outdoor seating is planned at each drive-thru, plus a small children’s play area at the McDonald’s. The application says that the nearest residential properties are separated by the Ring Road and that landscaping plans include planting more than 20 trees.

The site of the proposed drive-thrus

It is the final undeveloped plot at the Harlequin development which includes offices, a Travelodge and a children’s nursery. Two years ago, South Gloucestershire Council’s administration agreed to press ahead with a fast food exclusion zone policy within at least 400 metres of any school to help deter children from the temptation of junk food. That policy is still going through the council’s Local Plan process. The planning reference is P23/00568/F and anyone wanting to comment on the plans has until 10th March. • Meanwhile the sign went up last week outside the Greggs store which will be opening soon at the Gallagher Retail Park in Longwell Green.
