Trees, fencing, street lighting and telephone lines were also damaged in last Tuesday’s incident before the lorry, from Keynsham haulage firm I J McGill, came to a halt in Oldland Common High Street. There were no reported injuries. The man who was arrested has since been released on unconditional police bail while inquiries continue. Avon & Somerset Police said they were called at around 5.15pm following reports of a lorry colliding with a bridge on the A431 Bath Road at Willsbridge. Officers worked with BT and South Gloucestershire Council to make the scene safe and to clear debris. The road was closed until around 10pm, causing widespread traffic disruption. The bridge, which carries the Bristol & Bath Railway Path and is also used by Avon Valley Railway, was inspected the following day. A South Gloucestershire Council spokesperson said: “Our StreetCare officers attended the site

to carry out a structural assessment and found that there is no significant damage and the bridge remains safe.” The announcement came as a relief to the heritage railway which has its busiest time of the year running Santa Special train rides.
