The walkers put their best foot forward along the Kennet and Avon Canal from Winsley to Bath to support the work of the two local charities. Before officially starting the walk, former ITV West weatherman

Bob Crampton was joined by former Bath and England player John Hall and Bath Rugby players Levi Davis and Rhys Davies. John Hall, President of Bath Rugby spoke eloquently and movingly about his Dad who died just a few days ago in the care of Dorothy House. John said: “My Dad, Peter Hall, and my whole family were looked after fantastically well by the Hospice.

“Dorothy House really is a pillar of our local community. It is such a pleasure to do the Bath Rugby Walk today to support two great local charities and I’m sure if my Dad was looking down on me, he’d be saying: ‘Good on you and good on all the walkers’.” In total, 417 walkers left Dorothy House at 1pm, walking the eight miles to The Rec where many stayed together to watch the Six Nations match between England

and Wales. Emily Knight, Event Fundraiser at Dorothy House Hospice Care said: “Yet again the 2020 Bath Rugby Walk was an incredible day with teams from Bath, Wiltshire and Somerset taking part. “We were all humbled to hear the teams’ inspiring reasons for taking part and the moving tributes walkers wrote on their dedication labels in memory of family or friends. Compulsory recycling being considered in bid to boost rates Stephen Sumner

Local Democracy Reporter

RECYCLING could be made compulsory for every home in Bath and North East Somerset. Nearly one in five residents do not recycle at all, and many more do less than they could.

Bath and North East Somerset Council’s approach so far has been to educate and raise awareness, but it is “still failing to persuade a significant amount of people to take recycling seriously”. Now it is considering following Islington, Mid Devon and Swindon’s lead and making

recycling compulsory. If it brings in the same policies, persistent offenders will be penalised. A report to councillors says the warnings that fines could be issued – rather than actually fining anyone – has generated “real results”. It says recycling crews keep an

eye out for any households that put recyclable waste in their black bins, or put out little to no recycling. The report, put to the climate emergency and sustainability scrutiny panel on 16th March, moots compulsory recycling as a “discussion point” for members. It said: “We have not told

residents they MUST recycle. “We would appreciate discussion and thoughts about whether this should be something included in the action plan for the new strategy, and any other thoughts about how we can compel people who currently won’t recycle into doing so.” Continued on page 2
