The MEDICA LABMED FORUM highlights laboratory medicine’s top topics found a new home within the 12,000 square metres that make up Hall 1 and is organised by Prof. Dr. Georg Hoffmann (Trillium GmbH, specialists for medical publications) in cooperation with the German Heart Centre in Munich.

From smart diagnostics and high-performance medicine to Artificial Intelligence What functions will the laboratories of the future perform? And how can they make even more accurate diagnoses, ideally more quickly and at the place of treatment? From 18 to 21 November 2019, visitors in Düsseldorf will find the answers to these questions at MEDICA, the world’s largest and leading medical trade fair with more than 5,000 exhibitors. The field of laboratory technology and diagnostics has moved into Hall 1, which has just been completed. Here, more than 800 exhibitors, among them renowned returnees like Abbott and Euroimmun, focus on all the trending topics in modern laboratory medicine.

In addition, the cutting-edge MEDICA LABMED FORUM sessions highlight progress in the fields of microbiology, cardiology and oncology from a laboratory medical point of view. On 18 November, the programme will be chaired by PD Dr. med.

Beniam Ghebremedhin (Witten/ Herdecke University, HELIOS University Hospital Wuppertal) and launches with a closer look at microbiome analysis, currently a much hyped topic. Here, the forum addresses the sequencing of genomic information of all micro organisms in our bodies, which play a decisive role in determining the course of diseases.

In his introductory talk, Prof. André Gessner (Institute for Microbiology and Hygiene, University Hospital Regensburg) will cover a range of areas, from great analytical challenges to surprising findings regarding what is known as the gut-brain connection. Dres. Laura Steenbergen (Leiden University, Netherlands) and Jean-Pierre Trezzi (University of Luxembourg) will hold an illustrative talk on the meaning of microbiomes in the development of depression and Parkinson’s disease.

The first afternoon in Düsseldorf will be no less captivating. Here, the forum will illuminate an entirely new field of analytics, in which innovative start-ups are already active—breath analysis. Our breath

provides valuable diagnostic information more quickly and easily than our blood—not only on infections and tumours in our lungs, but on diseases of the digestive tract and numerous inflammations.

Dres. Simona Cristescu, Agnieszka Smolinska and Wolfgang Vautz will outline the areas of application for these issues. Prof. Wieland Voigt from Steinbeis University in Berlin will provide an extensive technological overview.

Parallels to sports medicine The second and third days at the MEDICA LABMED FORUM (19 and 20 November) will be chaired by Prof. Stefan Holdenrieder (German Heart Centre in Munich) and are dedicated to cardiovascular diseases and cancer. Here, the forum highlights new scientific and technological developments, molecular high-tech analysis procedures and modern Artificial Intelligence (AI) applications for laboratories as well as the use of small and intelligent diagnostic devices for athletes and patients.

In the cardiovascular module, PD Dr. Markus Krane from the German Heart Centre in Munich and Prof. Bernd Giebel from the University of Duisburg-Essen will present innovative procedures to regenerate heart tissue made of stem cells and exosomes. PD Dr. Oktay Tutarel, also from the German Heart Centre in Munich, and Prof. Frank Klawonn from TU Braunschweig will update visitors on cardiological biomarkers in

children and the urgently required standardisation of biomarker data.

“Due to the great interest visitors showed last year, we are dedicating an entire afternoon to the module on cardiology in sports medicine this year,” explains Prof.

Dr. Georg Hoffmann, who organises the forum. In this module, Prof.

Perikles Simon from the University of Mainz will talk about circulating nucleic acids as biomarkers for athletic activities and performance, whilst Prof. Billy Sperlich from the University Würzburg will take the auditorium through sports medical diagnostics in athletic sport to their use in grassroots sports.

The cardiology topics are particularly relevant to sports medicine and are expected to be highly popular with the specialist audience again this year. Therefore, another long-established element of MEDICA’s programme, the 7th MEDICA MEDICINE + SPORTS CONFERENCE, will once again unite the who’s who of the international professional sports medicine scene in the Congress Center Düsseldorf (CCD Süd) on 20 and 21 November 2019.

MEDICAL FAIR INDIA was in top shape for its anniversary with an increase in exhibitors and visitors

Expansion of themes around rehabilitation and care met with broad approval

EDICAL FAIR INDIA proved to be in top shape for its 25th anniversary with a record number of over 600 exhibitors from 25 countries and over 15,000 visitors. MEDICAL FAIR INDIA is the leading trade fair for the Indian healthcare industry and took place from 21 to 23 February in New Delhi (Pragati Maidan Exhibition Center). This signifies an increase in visitors compared to

both last year’s event in Mumbai (12,350) as well as the event in New Delhi in 2017 (13,480).

High-tech medical technology has to be designed with the true needs of medical professionals in mind small and mid-sized companies.

In her talk, Maren Gessler from the Helios Centre for Research and Innovation in Wuppertal explained that there certainly are options to support and fund innovative concepts and ideas.

Sensors allow applications that improve patient care

n 10 July 2019, the COMPAMED Innovation Forum took place at the Helios Clinic in Krefeld and focused on high-tech solutions for hospitals.

With its new concept, this year’s forum created a direct dialogue between the manufacturers and developers of technical solutions and the end product users.

Not compact enough, not flexible enough, too expensive, cannot be integrated sensibly into operational procedures on the wards—the shortcomings users listed for medical technology products was seemingly endless. The first introductory discussion already indicated that high-tech medical technology in particular often seems to have been developed at cross purposes to the real needs of medical professionals.

Franziska Niederschelp from the Helios Clinic presented the digitisation measures that

have been implemented and the progress within the Helios Group. In future, voice assistance systems for doctor’s letters and file management will play a particular role. A further focal point is the patient data gained from medical devices, laboratories and wards, which has to be bundled automatically and combined digitally.

Anaesthetist and intensive and emergency care Dr. Jens Ebnet raised awareness for the particular demands medical technology faces in acute situations. As lack of acceptance, possibly due to moral conflicts, may give rise to risks, it is necessary to sufficiently involve specialist doctors in the development of automated, dataprocessing medical devices. Using Swordcath, his own development of an intuitive system for inserting blood catheters, as an example, he also criticised regulatory hurdles and the lack of political support for

The second session centred on technologies that may offer innovative opportunities for application in diagnostics and therapies. Swiss company CSEM has developed an optical method of reliably monitoring blood pressure. The method uses the light of a conventional smartphone’s camera via an app. Eike Kottkamp from InnoME explained the advantages of singleuse sensor products: In fields of use that do not require high precision measurements, single-use sensors are attractive alternatives to elaborate and expensive sterilisation processes and open up new fields of application, for example under wound dressings.

Dr. Dirk Janasek from ISAS e.V. presented an innovative procedure for reliable haemophilia testing.

These are just two of the questions that are being asked at this year’s 7th MEDICA MEDICINE + SPORTS CONFERENCE (MMSC) on Wednesday, 20 November, and Thursday, 21 November 2019. The conference will take place in Düsseldorf as part of MEDICA 2019 (18 to 21 November), the world’s leading medical trade fair with over 5,000 exhibitors. With the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo only a year away and only three years to go until the 2022 FIFA World Cup, Performance Medicine is of course on the agenda. One hot topic in this field is regeneration, for example.

Which is one reason why Sebastian Kienle, one of the world’s best triathletes, will be speaking at

the conference in November. He won the 2014 Ironman World Championship in Hawaii and is a three-time Ironman European Championship winner, among other awards. Just recently Kienle told a lifestyle magazine, “If I had an identical twin and he pursued his career without the use of technology and data analysis, the poor guy wouldn’t stand a chance.” When it comes to training, he relies on state-of-the-

art technologies by Polar, Cortex Medical, Runscribe and Quarq, to name a few. Kienle then aligns his training according to the data that is available in real time. He will address which data then plays a role in preparing, competing, regenerating and preventing accidents and illness in the afternoon of Wednesday, 20 November, when he will be the first keynote speaker at the MMSC.

Preparing for Tokyo 2020 and all kinds of “heated battles”

This will be followed by a talk that deals quite concretely with the Olympic games, namely “Summer is coming! Preparation to Tokyo 2020 Olympics” held

by Dr. Stéphane Bermon. The doctor is the Director of the Health and Science Department at the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF). And the anticipated heat presents a huge challenge to the athletes and their teams. Under normal ambient conditions, our body temperature increases to around 37 to 39 degrees Celsius under stress.

If the surrounding temperature is high, our core body temperature can increase to more than 39 degrees Celsius whilst running a marathon, which can lead to an impairment of basic bodily functions and consequential medical damages. Heat chambers, training locations with high temperatures, new biomedical devices such as pills that are taken to measure temperature, sweat analysers, thermal imaging cameras, specially developed

clothes and wearable electrolyte and thermal analysers are used to research better preventive measures as well as to optimise the treatment of athletes with heatstroke. Global warming on the one hand and the increasing number of endurance athletes on the other are certain to put a stronger focus on heat-related illnesses and the prevention thereof. Bermon’s talk will focus on how the IAAF is handling these challenges and thus gives visitors an idea of things to come.

Data and artificial intelligence debunk common myths

The various technologies that are used to collect relevant values for athletes simultaneously create a huge and diverse amount of other data. Here, Prof. Dr. Dr. Dieter Leyk, Head of the Federal Armed Forces’ Institute for Preventive Medicine, and Prof. Dr. Jarek Krajewski, CEO of the Institute for Experimental Psychophysiology in Düsseldorf, are stepping up to merge this data

and make it available for use in grassroots and rehabilitation sports on the basis of artificial intelligence (AI). The Federal Armed Forces’ Institute for Preventive Medicine, for example, has collected more than one million data sets from marathon runners aged between 20 and 80 years of age. Findings gained from these data could offer new insight into marathons whilst at the same time debunking common myths surrounding rehabilitation sports.

Krajewski’s topic at the 7th MMSC is “AI-based affective computing systems for health, prevention and sports applications”. He will also address computerbased automated monitoring of psychological and physical health conditions (based on audio, video and bio signals).

concretely in his talk: Actively commuting to work can counter the disadvantages of a seated lifestyle as opposed to an inactive, “lazy” commute. And travel times do not necessarily increase. This is the preliminary result of a study during which some of the participants were advised to either commute by public transport, by bike, on foot or using a combination of the above, depending on the distance to their work place.

Participants in the control group were told to continue using their current methods of commute. Whilst the active participants showed measurable improvement in their quality of life and their general and mental health, for example, no significant changes could be identified in the control group. Under the “Corporate fitness” heading, Dr. Niederseer will present opportunities for a healthier way of life such as these at MMSC in the afternoon of Thursday, 21 November.

Of course, individually tailored training programmes are also important in competitive sports. The conference day on Thursday, 21 November, will start at 10 a.m. with tailored exercise programmes. Dr. med. Lutz Graumann, doctor to the German ice-hockey team, will offer insight into the new possibilities in regeneration and what findings can be transferred to grassroots sports.

Cannabis in sports? Not a no go during regeneration!

A similarly hot topic is the use of cannabis in sports. Cannabis is indeed on the WADA’s (World Anti-Doping Agency) Probibited In-Competition list, which means athletes are not permitted to take these substances during competition. However, they are not explicitly forbidden during the training phase, provided national regulations allow their use. Since May 2017, doctors in Germany are only allowed to prescribe patients cannabis in exceptional and justifiable cases. However, special permission to do so is not required. Under certain conditions, the drug’s anti-inflammatory, anti-convulsive, anxiolytic and anti-emetic effects can actually make sense in connection with regeneration after intensive sports.

In the morning of Thursday, 21 November, Prof. Dr. Jeff Konin, Chair

of the Physical Therapy Department at the University of Rhode Island, will explain in more detail how cannabis could be used during the regeneration phase.

Using evidence-based diagnostics for performance and health

In future, evidence-based diagnostics could help bring visibility to the true potential of sport. Thursday afternoon kicks off at 1:45 p.m. with a talk by Prof.

Dr. med. Wilhelm Bloch, head of the Department for Molecular and Cellular Sports Medicine at the German Sport University Cologne.

Under the heading “Epigenetic screening for performance and health—reality or future?”, he will take a closer look at how genes and gene modifications can predict a person’s athletic performance and how we can influence this.

No matter how careful we are, it is impossible to prevent sports injuries. The same applies to head

and skull injuries. From 2:45 to 3:45 p.m. on Thursday, 21 November, MMSC will not just focus on severe injuries. We will also be taking a look at minor, sportsrelated traumatic brain or head injuries, which can have severe consequences. Prof. med. Sam Browd, neurosurgeon at the University of Washington, will take a look at how these can be prevented in his talk titled „Innovations in head injury protection for athletes“.

Prof. Dr. Dr. med. Claus Reinsberger, head of the Sports Medicine department at Paderborn University, recently called for changes in diagnostics on the sidelines. As soon as a concussion is suspected, the athletes need to be immediately taken out of the game, examined and observed, as continuing to play can potentially have life-threatening results. Reinsberger presents “Sports neurophysiology as a tool to optimize performance and assess concussion” in the same session. The diagnostics suggested by Dr. John Falston, founder and CEO at Protxx Inc., are effective while the game is still on. A tool that is placed inside the ear allows doctors to recognise strain in real time and helps them decide whether a player needs to be taken out of play.

Fit for the future topics in sports medicine

A new addition to the MMSC programme is this year’s integration of the “Sports medical lactate performance diagnostics” course. On Thursday, 21 November, this theoretical module will be held under the supervision

of Prof. Dr. med. Dr. sportwiss.

Christine Graf at the MMSC, followed by the practical module, which takes place at the German Sport University Cologne on the following Saturday and Sunday.

It aims to gather the world’s innovative talents, projects, products and resources at one location, to promote international innovation and cooperation, to speed up the achievements of medical apparatus and instruments research, to create a new environment for medical device innovation, and to creatively develop the medical device industry of China.

The first Global Device Week received strong support from the local government. 314 investment institutions and 283 speakers gathered at this event, which received an overwhelming response and good feedback from the industry.

Main Session 2: TMIS 2019 TMIS aims to intensely analyze transformation of hospitals, research institutions and R&D departments of Chinese enterprises, combining production, teaching and research. Topics will cover significance of transformation promotion through innovation service providers, to make the innovation service sector a booster to the ecosystem for production, teaching, research, application and funding, and further push forward the process of China’s medical device innovation. Over 1,000 guests are expected to attend the Forum.

Main Session 3: DeviceChina 2019

In line with the market demand and strong appeal from enterprises, Global Device Week 2019 will continue the theme of the previous year, and the China Medical Devices Design and Startups Competition 2019 (CMDDSC) will be held with support from the Ministry of Science and Technology and the China National Center for Biotechnology Development, supported by three key forums – DeviceChina2019: China Medical Device Summit Forum, China Medical Innovation Forum 2019 (CMIF) and China Medical Device Transformation Medicine and Innovation Service Forum 2019 (TMIS) , and nearly 20 sub-sessions on professional topics will be held concurrently. Dermatologists highlight that while steroids can prove to be useful drugs, it is extremely important to know when, where, how, how much and for how long should these be used. The inappropriate use of steroids causes side-effects that can even lead to serious fungal infections and can even make the skin very thin. Our country has an industry thriving with the popularity of fairness creams in the skin care market and people tend to continue their usage based on the hype around them without really wondering about the mysterious veil over the contents of these creams. Amid the absence of adequate awareness around the harmful effects of popular fairness creams, most of these often continue to be produced as a vulnerable cocktail of steroids, hydroquinone, and tretinoin. The prolonged use of these leads to grave health concerns and damage the skin deeply and sometimes even irreversibly.

Yes, there are always certain regimens of self-care for our skin and some home remedies that are even beneficial but it also sometimes takes an expert opinion from a dermatologist to ensure our skin safety.

• Thinning of the skin – this can make the affected skin more vulnerable to damage; for example, you may bruise more easily.

• Stretch marks – that can become permanent, although they’ll probably become less noticeable over time.

• Contact dermatitis – this is characterised by skin irritation caused by a mild allergic reaction to the

substances in a particular topical corticosteroid.

• Rosacea, which is a condition that causes the face to become red and flushed.

• Changes in skin colour – this is usually more noticeable in people with dark skin.

• Excess amount of hair growth on the area of skin being treated.

There are other treatments which can help also in skin lightening, fairness creams are not the only solution, experts point out. Fairness creams with lighter ingredients are safer to use. But one has to be careful about the ingredients as there are many different kinds of fairness creams available. The best way to make your skin get fairer is to avoid getting tanned and using a very safe de-pigmenting regimen.

The above mentioned side effects are more likely if you’re: • Using a more potent corticosteroid (If potent or very potent topical corticosteroids are used for a long time or over a large area, there’s a risk of the medication being absorbed into the bloodstream and causing internal side effects as well) • Using it for a very long time, or over a large area.

• The older generation and the very young ones are more vulnerable to side effects Hence it is of utmost important to not be careless with your most sensitive sense organ, your SKIN. Always consult certified dermatologists before exposing your skin to any products. n

Ideally however, surgeons and assisting staff should have separate displays to ensure an optimal overview. This is the reason why the new construction of the operating rooms at the end of 2018 was taken as an opportunity for Dornbirn Hospital to upgrade their imaging system, and they have since been using CuratOR Surgical Panels from EIZO GmbH. These are type SP2-46T-24 medical image viewing devices with a glass front, supplemented by smaller type SP1-24 displays. EIZO’s userfriendly CuratOR Caliop software can be easily integrated in the existing IT infrastructure and supports all work processes in the hospital. specially in high-stress situation, it is essential for imaging elements in the OR to be straightforward, fast and uncluttered so that medical personnel are not distracted from complicated interventions by the technology. “In our old operating rooms, handling the OR towers was often difficult, which

is why we wanted to modernize our video systems alongside our new OR construction,” said Peter Palombo, Technical Director of Dornbirn Hospital. “It was very important for us to acquire a system which is intuitive to operate, offers an optimal screen layout and straightforward system configuration.”

With this in mind, Dornbirn Hospital released a top bidder tender for a new imaging system in the summer of 2017. Over the following weeks, various concepts from different bidders were presented at Dornbirn Hospital, with the most convincing one being the comprehensive EIZO package with the CuratOR Surgical Panels. The first phase of construction included

the completion of four operating rooms, which successfully took up service in December 2018. The second construction phase for the remaining three ORs is scheduled for mid 2019.

Hospital-specific image display with intuitive operability At the heart of the new imaging system in each operating room are the type SP1-24 and SP2-46T-24 Surgical Panels. The SP1-24 forms the central control unit on a 24” screen. “During development of the user interface, we always focus on particularly easy handling for OR personnel and ensure to fulfill the exact requirements of the user,” explained Matthias Lubkowitz, Vice President of the OR Solutions

department at EIZO GmbH. “Third-party software integration is also possible thanks to our compatible system. We adapt to the hospital’s workflow, not the other way around.” For example, EIZO supports common hospital standards such as DICOM and HL7, but can also easily configure and customize the required data elements for the hospital.

This means that hospital-specific applications can even be quickly integrated directly on site.

With the SP1-24 at the center, the system is completed by two type SP2-46T-24 screens measuring 46” and 24”. The screens are designed as glass-fronted image viewing systems which are flush-mounted in the glass walls of the rooms and

display both videos and images.

The 46” display is equipped with an optional intuitive touch control, which is ideally suited for displaying images and video streams during surgery thanks to its generous size. The visual data can come from different sources at the same time. “A particularly user-friendly feature is the fully automated export of image data to our archiving system,” said Palombo.

“The menu navigation is designed to be highly intuitive, meaning that our personnel can concentrate fully on the intervention without being distracted by technological obstacles.” The system even allows for direct access to and display of data from the hospital’s central PACS and HIS. This ensures that OR personnel have access to all critical

Loss-free transmission without latency via Video-over-IP technology with fiber optic cables EIZO uses Video-over-IP technology for fast transmission of video data in real time. This makes it possible to transmit the enormous quantities of data inherent in full HD and 4K video signals without delay or compression. To achieve this, fiber optic cables were installed, which will in future be able to transmit even higher resolutions such as 8K and 16K. However, laying these cables posed a significant challenge. “Fiber optic cables are made of glass. In operating rooms, they are often located in moveable media supply units – for example on the ceiling.

This means that special attention must be paid to the risk of cable breakage,” explained Lubkowitz.

“Thankfully, our on-site partner Sanova has extensive experience in laying fiber optic cables and took on the challenging task.”

Another challenge for the installation of the video system is posed by the incorporation of third-party hardware, such as internal hospital network switches.

“The flexibility of our project management makes it possible to adapt to customer-specific requirements and previously undefined interfaces,” said Lubkowitz. “We were therefore able to quickly incorporate all existing components - from C-arm to endoscope to mobile OR tools.

Our user-friendly system also allows for subsequent integration of new components via plugand-play.” The in-house software CuratOR Caliop functions as the superordinate control system for the Video-over-IP solution with

CuratOR Alipe. For data security reasons, the video signal is only processed within a closed network in each operating room. Once approved by the personnel responsible, the data can be encrypted and transmitted to external recipients – for example another operating room or a conference room.

Customer-oriented care and fast support Before the system went live, all OR personnel participated in comprehensive training courses held by the experts from EIZO and Sanova. Spread over four days, there were two dates each for all employees during which they had the chance to become accustomed to the new devices and discover the possibilities they offer. For the first few days of operation, Dornbirn Hospital received on-site support, meaning that immediate assistance was available in case of feedback or change requests. “Our staff is extremely enthusiastic about the video systems,” said Palombo. “The individual elements are easy to operate, fast and clearly structured.

We can now access a vast amount of features, with no need to change our work processes. The EIZO system fits perfectly into our OR routine.” After-Sale Service is provided for Dornbirn Hospital in form of an all inclusive package which offers full maintenance for five years. Sanova Pharma GmbH serves as the direct contact on site and can be reached around the clock in order to react quickly to problems. If necessary, EIZO can also connect with the systems via remote access. This ensures faster and more effective support.

t the Battery China exhibition held from July 6-9 in Beijing this year, BST eltromat Shanghai presented solutions for quality assurance in lithium-ion battery manufacturing processes. At booth 020+021 in hall 2 the focus will be on web guiding as well as 100% inspection products. The company will show two brand-new demo units specifically designed for the battery industry.

The solutions for web guiding are on a rewinder with the BST eltromat line and contrast sensor CLS Pro 600. This sensor is suitable for a wide range of applications. The web guiding system is able to control and automatically position webs on the basis of lines and contrasts as well as web edges. Visitors can see the implemented “Tap-Ignoring” feature on this rewinder and can get an overview of how to overcome challenges during the battery manufacturing processes.

On the demo unit for 100% inspection BST eltromat shows a TubeScan Digital Strobe 4k system from Nyquist Systems, which is a member of the BST Group since the beginning of 2019. This new model of TubeScan Digital Strobe 4k is equipped with an innovative 9-megapixel camera made in Germany. It is the world’s first 100% inspection system on a hybrid basis with a 4k resolution to generate 100% image reproduction.
