Introduction This booklet contains the details of spirituality retreat formation opportunities in 2022 for school and system personnel. You are encouraged to read the rationale and conditions for each retreat carefully before applying for the program that best suits you. Just a reminder of why this is core to all we are and all we do: ● To be fully human we need to develop the spiritual dimension of the people who work in Catholic Schools. ● In a chaotic world, spiritual development can help sustain us. ● High levels of spiritual well-being are linked with high levels of hope and a positive outlook on life. ● The spiritual formation of our staff is paramount to continuing the Catholic Ethos of our schools. In Catholic Education, we are committed to this search for the mystery of God that can be found revealed in all the world of God’s creation. It is, therefore, the constant task of the Catholic School to ensure that we never forget our dignity and reduce our work and ministry to that of functionaries. “Spiritual formation in a Catholic Christian school invites people to see the realities of our world in new and life-giving ways. It calls them to recognise the presence of God in daily life experiences. Catholic school communities promote experiences, which assist students to live in healthy relationships, sensitive to the needs and gifts of others, based on the belief that to be human and to be Christian is to live in community. Such spiritual formation is transformational, leading to a richer connection with the presence of the Spirit who heals, reconciles, renews, gives life, bestows peace, sustains hope, brings joy and creates unity.” TCE RE Shape Paper 2019-2023

Message from the Director To be fully human we need to develop the faith and spiritual dimensions of the people who work in Catholic schools. The faith and spiritual formation of our staff is paramount to continuing the Catholic Ethos of our schools, and in Catholic Education, we are committed to this search for the mystery of God that can be found revealed in creation. Townsville Catholic Education invites all staff within the system to cultivate a spirit that directly influences the style and manner by which one leads their life. A commitment to good formation and learning experience requires that we are awake and aware of our experience by attending in a way that discloses meaning and allows wisdom to arrive within and without. The development of these formation programs builds on the good work already in evidence across our schools and allows individuals to grow and develop within the context of their own spiritual journey. Christian Spiritual formation is deeply personal and radically communal in its vision and praxis We live, work and teach in a different and changing world that sees us connecting with philosophical and cultural influences that present new challenges for the effective nurturing of our spirituality in a Catholic educational context. There is a challenge for our schools and system to engage all staff in positive ways in the mission of the Church, to proclaim the Good News of Jesus within the spiritual heritage of Catholicism. This is done through a Spirituality Retreat Program that is both connective and respectful of individuals and relates meaningfully to their contexts and backgrounds. I invite and encourage you to engage in the faith and spirituality formation and retreat opportunities in support of your professional learning plans for 2022. Details of all programs, prerequisites, and conditions are included in the following pages.

Spirituality Formation 2022 A retreat is an opportunity to withdraw totally from ordinary life; to be quiet and still; and to listen to life and to God through silence, scripture, reflection, contemplation, prayer, and liturgy. These days offer a unique opportunity for staff to take time out – to reflect on life, leading and teaching; to consider what it really means to be working with the Catholic education system, or to what it means to be ‘this particular’ teacher or school officer; to lead in ‘this particular way’; to explore the awesome responsibility and privilege of this vocation; to renew spirituality, and to meet the challenges of both work and life. The process of the retreats includes: ● Prayer and meditation ● Silence and stillness ● Engaging with Scripture and tradition ● Reflection ● Personal space and group activity ● Collegiality This year’s retreat program offers two levels of experience per retreat cluster theme: - Creative Spirituality (Levels 1 & 2) - Creation Spirituality (Levels 1 & 2) - Christian Meditation (Levels 1 & 2) - Indigenous Awakenings (Levels 1 & 2) - Courage (Levels 1 & 2) - Spiritual Wellbeing (Levels 1 & 2) - Spirituality in Leadership Middle and Senior Leaders are strongly encouraged to engage with TCE’s Spirituality Program as part of their ongoing professional learning and goal setting in their Professional Learning Plan (PLP). Before I Apply: 1. Read thru each retreat program thoroughly 2. Read the prerequisites - do I meet these? 3. Check mandatory requirements and your ability to comply with these, e.g. how many years in Catholic Education, must live-in, be prepared to share accommodation, dormitory-style accommodation etc. 4. Check your availability to attend the retreat. A retreat is not the same as a training program. Staff are required to participate in the whole retreat, the process is important for the group and the individual. 5. Check your family, work, sport and other commitments carefully before you apply. Withdrawal or requests to attend part of the retreat or leave early are unfair on the group. 6. Take note of the closing date - 25 February 2022

How do I apply? 1. Consult your Principal, APRE or Line Manager before completing the application form. 2. Complete the electronic Application form for Spirituality Formation Program prior to Friday 25 February 2022. 3. In your application, you must make two choices. We will try to accommodate each candidate’s first choice, however, this may not always be possible. 4. Note that some programs are very specific as to who the retreat is designed for e.g. retreats marked ‘Open to all Staff” are open to all employees.

My Application: 1. Your electronic application is received by the RE Department. 2. Your Principal, APRE or Line Manager will notify you if your application has not been put forward by the school or department this year. 3. Shortlisting is made by the Director Catholic Identity & Indigenous Education Services on the basis of: ● School recommendations ● Mandatory requirements ● Number of places in each retreat ● Years of service with Catholic Education ● A mix of people from different schools 4. Wait for an e-mail from Chitra Madhavan to advise of the outcome of your application 5. Once you have received an email advising you of your acceptance into a program, you must then register on iChris. 6. Unsuccessful applicants will also receive an email advising of the outcome.

Spiritual Direction - Attending to the Sacred Within Watch video Spiritual Direction offers a safe relationship with a trained spiritual companion (Director) in a comfortable, confidential space that provides encouragement to reflect on daily life, hopes, challenges, joys and struggles. It is an invitation into a spiritual conversation and an opportunity to become more attentive to the presence of the sacred in daily life. The process is "gentle, genuine and sacred. The joy of the encounter is not just being listened to by the spiritual companion, but also having the opportunity to listen to your own heart." The House of Prayer, in partnership with Townsville Catholic Education Office, would like to invite you to experience Spiritual Direction as part of your personal and spiritual formation.

What does this invitation involve? ● TCEO will sponsor two Spiritual Direction sessions for any staff who wish to experience Spiritual Direction. ●

As Spiritual Direction is a personal and confidential service, taking part will not contribute to professional development hours.

How do I take up this invitation? Contact Brianne at the House of Prayer to make an appointment with a Spiritual Director (at a time that would suit you) by phone on 4728 9861 or by email at sdformation@tsv.catholic.org.au. Please don’t hesitate to contact Brianne if you have any questions.
