RATIONALE FOR RELIGIOUS EDUCATION PROFESSIONAL LEARNING Religious Education is charged with interpreting the signs of the times and to “reread the memory of faith”, recontextualising so that students can engage in an open narrative and dialogue with the richness of the Catholic tradition and their personal experiences and contemporary cultural contexts so that a rich post-critical belief is nurtured.[1] It is important in Religious Education that a rigorous and robust curriculum is planned and implemented. There is a direct correspondence between learning and teaching in Religion and other curriculum areas. The key variance from other curricula lies in the number of forces that shape and direct Religious Education. The Religious Education Guidelines draw heavily from a range of Church documents including the Catechism of the Catholic Church and Vatican documents on education and related disciplines and statements from Bishops and educational agencies. Today’s vast and rapid cultural changes demand that we constantly seek ways of expressing unchanging truths in a language which brings out their abiding newness.[2] Catholic schools aspire to provide religious literacy and faith formation and give witness to, and support students on, the path towards a personal integration of faith and life. It is our ultimate goal that students will articulate their faith and live as open and authentic witnesses to the mission of Jesus and become agents of cultural change in the world. The school’s task is fundamentally a commitment to provide a pathway for a synthesis of culture and faith, and a synthesis of faith and life. Religious Education in Catholic schools needs to remain grounded in the tradition of the Catholic Church while being responsive and relevant for all students.[3] Through a deep knowledge and understanding of Scripture and Church teaching, the teacher witnesses a living faith and builds dialogue between the students’ experiences and cultural contexts and what the Catholic Church believes, celebrates, lives and prays. Pedagogical practices that enhance student learning must be applied and a clear connection between what is learned and applied to daily living is highlighted. Children and young people benefit from Religious Education, the learning area at the heart of the Catholic school. When Religious Education brings faith into dialogue with life it has the capacity to be a source of wisdom, a stimulus to lifelong learning, a means to personal transformation and a call to missionary discipleship.[4] The critical aspect of the school's role is to educate students and to focus on a growth in knowledge of the Catholic Tradition in a way that is educationally sound and sophisticated yet conveys a sense of the nature of Christianity, and of how Christians are trying to live their lives. To teach in a Catholic school, teachers need to develop their understanding of the Catholic Church and its mission in the world, and the contribution they make to that mission. Teachers of Religion require qualifications and competence in the areas of Religious Education theory and practice, theology and scripture so they can facilitate learning and assist students to grow in knowledge and understanding of the Catholic faith tradition in the context of an ecumenical and multi-faith world. Teachers contribute to the development of student's academic, spiritual, and physical needs, and directing this development can create a synthesis between faith, culture, and life. INTRODUCTION The Accreditation to Teach Religion in Catholic Schools Professional Learning Program (RE PL Program) centres on building the capacity of teachers to teach Religion and teach it effectively. The complementarity of these two approaches are central to the formation of our staff and thus, teachers are encouraged to work towards engagement in the program for personal and professional development.

ALIGNMENT WITH STRATEGIC PRIORITIES This program has been designed to provide ongoing professional renewal for teachers of Religion and the accrual of hours towards Accreditation to Teach Religion in Catholic Schools obligations. A copy of the diocesan policy regarding accreditation can be viewed here. Teachers of Religion should consider the integration of this professional renewal opportunity as a strategy for their ongoing professional learning and goal-setting in their Professional Learning Plan (PLP). The accreditation of teachers in our Diocesan Catholic Schools aims to develop teacher competence and confidence to teach the school’s curriculum and, where required, teach religious education in our schools to deepen students’ understanding of our Catholic tradition and the religious life of the school. Ongoing professional development and formal study can assist teachers to develop their expertise to ensure that our schools: “educate and form students who are challenged to live the Gospel of Jesus Christ and who are literate in the Catholic and broader Christian Tradition so that they may participate critically and authentically in faith contexts and wider society. AITSL Standards The AITSL standards covered in each of the Professional Learning opportunities offered by TCE have been noted within the schedule of course offerings. The seven Standards identify what is expected of teachers within three domains of teaching. Teachers’ demonstration of the Standards will occur within their specific teaching context at their stage of expertise and reflect the learning requirements of the students they teach. COURSE INFORMATION The Professional Learning Program provides RE PL for teachers of Religion and Senior Leaders so that they are spiritually and intellectually equipped to face the challenge of socialising Catholic Identity. Staff formation is the process whereby personal transformation becomes reflected in the work and culture of the school. Teachers are encouraged to engage with one or more of the following courses. One-day workshops accrue 5 hours accreditation to teach Religion in Catholic schools; two-day workshops accrue 10 hours towards accreditation to teach Religion in Catholic schools. A number of the courses are repeats and will have the Repeat symbol (R) in the title. Teachers are welcome to register to attend more than one course throughout the year at the discretion of their Principal/APRE. Registration is the responsibility of the teacher. Note that attendance numbers per Professional Learning Course will be capped. N.B.: Teacher Release is available for all attendees. Travel and accommodation costs are the responsibility of the attendee/school and will not be sponsored by TCE. Reimbursement for courses that incur a cost will be provided upon successful completion and submission of relevant documentation. The option to Video conference into each course is available. COURSE DESCRIPTIONS Championing Social Justice: Faith in Action in our schools This is a day for APREs, Pastoral Leaders, Chaplains, and teachers interested in championing Caritas Australia in their school community and reinforcing the charism and identity of our Catholic faith in action. The goal of the day is for participants to gain an understanding of Caritas Australia as the Catholic Church in Australia’s international aid & development agency, the difference between charity and justice, Caritas resources and programs to support your teaching across the whole year, and the ways in which they can assist in embedding Catholic Social Teaching (CST) across the curriculum. Caritas Australia staff will facilitate the day and involve local input, video speaker presentations including a Q&A live session with our international program staff, personal time for exploring Caritas resources, and discussion time for ways to implement resources in the curriculum across the year.

ECO Justice - Becoming Better Carers of Creation This workshop will form and empower teachers and school leaders to help move their community forward as Carers of Creation as envisioned by Pope Francis’ encyclical Laudato Si’. Attendees will journey through the theological roots of ecological justice foundational to the charism of St Francis and discuss how their heart, head and hands are positioned to enact change within their Catholic school environment. Attendees will leave the day with concrete steps for action at their school based on a renewed and spiritual understanding of caring for our common home. The program will include: ● An introduction to Laudato Si ● An introduction to Catholic Earthcare, including Earthcare families, Earthcare schools, Earthcare parishes. ● Dialogue around ‘the issue’ – what are the problems? What do we know are the solutions? ● Auditing (informal) – story sharing from each attendees school ● Inspiration from Case studies from other parishes, schools and families. ● Determining a ‘Vision’ – identifying a LSAP goal to work towards at the least. ● Discuss strategies for how to implement plans (ecological conversion process). ● Extending the Catholic Earthcare Schools Program with a ‘Walking with God’ program, ‘Eco-Youth Summits’ (Sabrina Stevens via video link) ● Planning the next step. Attendees will leave the day with concrete steps for action at their school based on a renewed and spiritual understanding of caring for our common home.

Engaging with the Sacred - Taking the Mystery out of the 7 Sacraments Participants will gain a deeper understanding of the sacramentality of the Catholic Church through learning how to engage with the Sacred. The groups will explore the bigger picture of Sacramentality so as to understand how the Sacraments nourish our lives as teachers in Catholic schools.

Growing Dialogical Schools This two-day program is designed for Senior Leadership - Principals and APREs, Aspirant Leaders and members of the school-based Catholic Identity Advisory Teams/Committees (CIAT/Cs) and delivered via Zoom from two leading ACU academics in the area of ECSi, Assoc Prof Robyn Horner and Dr Teresa Brown. Participants grow and enhance their knowledge and understanding of Catholic identity, the ECSI data that informs this knowledge and the programs, activities and experiences responsive to the formation of a dialogical school.

Our Catholic Mission: Forming a Joyful, Hope-filled Australian Church This workshop gives time to personal reflection, small group dialogue, deep listening and discussion around a contemporary understanding of Mission and creative ways to continue God’s Mission in the world through our actions in the classroom and community. Participants will examine the writings of Pope Francis and explore missionary discipleship in the Australian context. They will also be given opportunities to learn ways to apply and integrate missionary discipleship in the school curriculum as well as in liturgy and prayer.

Our Everyday Mission: Exploring Catholic Social Teaching This one-day workshop explores Catholic Social Teaching in a contemporary understanding of Mission in an interactive, immersive and contextual way. Catholic Social Teaching offers us a framework for living God’s Mission in this world. Participants will be invited to reflect, dialogue and participate in immersive activities which allow for making the connections between the CSTs and their role in their individual school context.

Prayer in the Classroom Participants will enhance their understanding of a range of prayer forms practiced in the Catholic Tradition. These include Christian Meditation, Adoration, Contrition and Thanksgiving. The Liturgy of the Hours and Lectio Divina will also be covered through this experiential course. Participants will not only experience these prayer forms, but will take away practical resources to enhance the experience of the students in their classrooms.

Taking the Mystery out of Liturgy This one-day workshop leads teachers to a deeper (better) understanding of how to lead students to worship in our Catholic classrooms and schools. Teachers will cover the nature of liturgy based on the Directory of Masses with Children and how to prepare students for their experience of the Mass. The workshop will build on where teachers are at and enhance their understanding of the liturgical seasons. Topics around the importance of timing, space and engagement when adapting liturgies and prayers to suit classroom contexts as well as awareness of age and stage of students will be discussed. Accessing resources to assist staff in this area will also be covered through this learning.

Understanding the RE Curriculum Participants will develop a working knowledge of the relationship between the Year Level Descriptions, Standard Achievement Standards and the Content Descriptions which transition through the Surface to Deep methodology and assessment of Religion in TCE schools. Participants will interact with the curriculum and resources available through the TCE Religion Website and will engage in planning Learning Activities for a unit of study using the Surface to Deep to Transfer approach. An understanding of Formative Assessment and its role in building students’ deep knowledge and understanding of Content; Learning Intentions and Success Criteria (and their relationship to the Content Descriptors and the Achievement Standard) will also be examined.

Writing the RE Assessment This workshop will engage teachers in an introduction to Formative Assessment as an ongoing, flexible and diagnostic tool providing an ongoing evaluation of the development of learning. Summative Assessment in Religion will also be explored with a focus on the development of task sheets and Guide to Making Judgement (GTMJ) for a unit of work in Religion.

Worlds of the Text: These professional development programs aim to support teachers with deepening their knowledge and understanding of the “Worlds of the Text”: The World Behind the Text; The World of the Text and the World in Front of the Text. There will ve direct engagement with Core and Supplementary Scripture referenced in the Religion Curriculum. Teachers and APREs will gain new skills to answer some of the following questions in relation to scripture: ● How is an understanding of this text influenced by what we can learn about its context? ● How is an understanding of this text influenced by the community that produced this text? ● How is an understanding of this text influenced by its type and structure? ● How might this text be used/applied in contemporary contexts? 1. Introduction to the Worlds of the Text 1 (2-day workshop: 16-17 June) No prerequisites: RE Teachers, early-career APREs and teachers to register The first day of this workshop will offer: a general introduction to The Worlds of the Text; an overview of the production of the scriptures; and then explore the very many areas of background knowledge which are essential/helpful for understanding the stories found in the Gospel accounts. The second day of this workshop will explore in greater depth two areas of background knowledge: Purity/Pollution and Honour/Shame. Teachers will understand how these social scripts and religious frameworks help us to read the Jesus story. The final session of the day will explore the World of Luke how knowledge of the bigger story of the Gospel according to Luke, its themes and key ideas, help us to understand the individual units that make up the bigger story. 2. Worlds of the Text 2 (1-day workshop: 11 August) Prerequisite: Introduction to the Worlds of the Text (above) This day will consist of three sessions: The first session will explore the World of Matthew - how knowledge of the bigger story of the Gospel according to Matthew, its themes and key ideas, helps us to understand the individual units that make up the bigger story. The second session will explore the Diet of the people of Israel in New Testament times and the social scripts at play in Meals (which were always a ceremony within this culture). The way in which Jesus challenges the underlying worldview at Meals will be explored. The third session will be a deep dive into one particular biblical text, exploring the World behind the Text, how understanding is informed by the World of the Text and how we can draw connections to our world which lies in front of the text. The text for this session will be the Transfiguration. 3. Worlds of the Text 3 (1-day workshop: 12 August) Prerequisite: Previous attendance to “Introduction to the Worlds of the Text” (WOTT 1) This day will consist of three sessions: The first session will explore the World of John - how knowledge of the bigger story of the Gospel according to John, its themes and key ideas, helps us to understand the individual units that make up the bigger story. The second session will explore the social domain of kinship, noting that this was the primary social domain in the world of first century Palestine. We will explore the nature of kinship in first century society (who is kin and what behaviour is expected towards kin?). This will serve also as a launchpad for a discussion of gender roles, betrothal, marriage, divorce, and inheritance. The third session will be a deep dive into one particular biblical text, exploring the World behind the Text, how understanding is informed by the World of the Text and how we can draw connections to our world which lies in front of the text. The text for this session will be the Parable of the Prodigal Son.

BBI TAITE Adult Faith Education Online Modules BBI Adult Faith is a site which offers a variety of courses for building and developing our faith as adults. Ongoing learning is a vital aspect of nourishing Christian faith, deepening conversion and emboldening our missionary discipleship. BBI has a long tradition of bringing to the faithful Christian spirituality and faith education. The courses are continuously evolving in response to new learning and changing contexts, and new units are added to continue to assist you in developing your faith. Modules offered include: Prayer, Divine Footprints, Becoming Church and Treasures of the Tradition1. Target Group: Teachers, Principals, School Leaders and APREs Cost:

edX MOOC- Enhancing Catholic School Identity Through five extensive modules of this MOOC, you will become acquainted with a new vocabulary and theological framework regarding Catholic school identity. You will learn, in an active way, about several quantitative instruments to assess the Catholic identity of your school - alongside practical theological instruments to strengthen and enhance it. You will learn: ● How to assess and enhance the current Catholic identity of your school ● The theological underpinnings of the Catholic Dialogue School ● How to read and interpret the different scales and graphs ● Good examples of a Recontextualising Dialogue School ● Ways to apply specific strategies to enhance the Catholic identity of your school. ECSI Online Formation and Professional Learning In May and June 2022, there will be 8 live-streamed sessions spread over 4 weeks. Registration is open to everybody who is interested to join, on the condition however that they possess a solid basic knowledge about ECSI. (For example by having followed the Intensive Course at KU Leuven, or the THCT605 Course Unit Introducing the Leuven Project at ACU, or by having completed the ECSI MOOC on edX, or by having followed a series of ECSI lectures by Didier Pollefeyt during a work visit — or a combination of the above).
