MEET DAVID LONG
What wasyour initial motivation toget into education?
Tobeginwith,I wasfortunateto grow upinahouseof educators. My dadwasaprofessor of dental medicineat theUniversityof Pittsburgh, andmymomwasan elementarylibrarian Seeingthe impact theyhadupontheir students reallyinfluencedme I remember beingout withmydadonetimein London,England,of all places, and oneof hisformer studentscameup tousandtalkedabout how amazing mydadwas.AndI thought to myself,"what acool thing, tohave someoneseekyouout totell you how muchtheyappreciatedwhat youdidfor them "I wantedtohavea career whereI wouldmakean impact onpeopleinthat way.
What doyou enjoy most about workingin education?
Threethingscometomind.First,I lovetoseekidsgrow andthriveand becometheir best selves, whether asanadvisor, acoach, aclassroom teacher,or anadministrator Second,I?vehadamazing relationshipswithsomany colleaguesthroughout mycareer It?sajoytoworkwithteacherswho arekid-centeredandwhoare alwaysreadytotacklechallenges together I?velearnedalot from manyincredibleeducatorsand mentors Andthethirdthingisthat at independent schoolslikeMVS, weoftenhavestudentscomeback tovisit whenthey?reincollegeor after they?vegraduated. There?s nothingthat warmsmyheart more
thanwhenI get totalk toagradand hear what they?redoing,or what they?restudying,or somethingthat remindedthemof myclass. It goes backtothat storyabout mydadin London, whereyouseehow muchof animpact you?vehad Becausewhen your studentsareteenagers, they don? t alwaystell youthat!
What wasyour first teaching joblike?
Myfirst teachingexperiencewasat SewickleyAcademyinPittsburgh, whichisasmaller independent school.I hadnever reallyheardof independent schoolsgrowingup.I went tothepublicschool inmy neighborhood, andI hadsome friendswhoattendedCatholic schools, andthat wasreallythe extent of myeducational landscape asakid I reallydidn? t know what I didn? t know.
I went off tocollege, asmall liberal artscollegecalledGroveCityin northwest PA,andoneof myfirst memoriesthereisthat I did incrediblypoorlyonmyfirst paper for ahistoryclass.I wasn? t readyto writeincollege. Now,I wasanA andBstudent inhighschool,I was compliant,I didn? t get introuble, andsotheykindof just pushedme along I wasnever reallychallenged toexpandmyhorizons, andsoI just kindof skatedthrough, andI didn? t know anythingdifferent. It wasn? t until mycollegeexperiencethat I realizedthevalueof thingslike
formingrelationshipswithmy professors, small classes, andsoon I got myundergraduatedegreeat GroveCityinhistoryandsecondary education Then,I went onto graduateschool at Duquesnefor my master?sinUS History, andduring that timeI startedlookingfor teachingjobs.Andafriendof mine said,?Hey,there?sthisschool called SewickleyAcademythat?slooking for asocial studiesteacher?I remember walkingonthat campus, asimilar campustoMVS,and thinking?Wherehasthisbeenmy wholelife?!?SoSewickleytook a chanceonmeout of gradschool I hadgreat mentorshipall theway through, andonceI saw what independent schoolscoulddo,I knew I wantedtohavemycareer there And,moreover,I wantedmy childrentobethere, becauseI wantedthemtohavethat educational experience
What did you learn at Sewickley?
I wastherefor nineyears, sort of my formativeteachingyears. Ultimately, what I realizedwasthat I lovetoteach,I lovetoadvise,I love tocoach, but I alsosaw opportunitiestohaveabigger impact inaschool settingthat I wantedtoexplore SoI went tothe Headof School there, amannamed HamClark.I?vehadsomany different mentorsthroughout my career, but Mr.Clark reallystands
out inmymind I toldhimI wanted togobackandget mymaster?sof educationinadministration, andI toldhim,?I?mgoingtoapplytoPitt or Duquesne, what doyouthink?? Andhelookedat meandsaid, ?David, whywouldyouapplythere whenyoushouldbeapplyingto HarvardandColumbia??Hepushed metothinkdifferentlyabout myself andencouragedmetothinkbigger SoI didget intoHarvard, andI got myM.Ed.,andI cameback and taught at Sewickleyfor threemore years. That experiencehelpedmeto seethepossibilitiesthat wereout there, andI foundmynext jobin administrationwhenI became Deanof Studentsat Louisville CollegiateSchool
What wasyour experiencelike at Collegiate?
I wasat LouisvilleCollegiatefor 11 years, whichwereyearsof incrediblegrowthprofessionally andpersonally Again,I hadgreat colleaguesandmentors, including Brad[Davies],whowastheHeadof Upper School andaboys?soccer coach, andJames[CallerozWhite], whowasHeadof School.I wasDean of Students, thenI becamethe historydepartment chair, thenI moveduptobecomeAssistant Head of Upper School, andfinally,Head of Upper School I hadno experiencewiththeschool or the cityof LouisvillewhenI appliedfor thejob, andI didn? t know how long I?dstay, andit just turnedout LouisvilleCollegiatewastheright placetobe.Soyoucouldsaythat if Sewickleywasmyformativeyears asateacher,LouisvilleCollegiate wasmyformativeyearsasan administrator And,importantly, LouisvilleCollegiateisalsowhereI met mywifeClaire
Yes,very important!Onething we?vetalked about before, and somepeoplemight not know,is that Clairetaught at MVSearly in her career I wasin her first eighth gradeEnglish class
Yes!That washer first teachingjob out of undergrad It?sfunnyhow whenI cametoCollegiate,I was thinking?Oh,I?ll trythisplaceout,I don? t know how it?ll go,?andthen suddenly,fast-forward,elevenyears andthreekidslater.It?samazing.
When you wereat Collegiate,
did you haveit in your mind that your ultimategoal wastobea head of school?
That?sareallygoodquestion Claire andI wereactuallyjust laughing about this, becauseI went back and lookedat oneof thepapersI wrote whileI wasat Harvard, inabout 2001or 2002.Andinthat paper,I writeabout how mydreamwasto beadivisionhead.AndI got there! At first,I didn? t haveaspirationsof school headship, but what was interestingisthat onceI becamea divisionheadat Collegiate,I hadthe samerealizationthat I didat Sewickley:therearewaystohavean evenbigger impact at aschool,to makeadifferenceall thewayfrom Pre-K throughgrade12.AndJames CallerozWhitewasgreat about nurturingthat aspiration He encouragedmetodotheNAIS AspiringHeadsProgram, whichI recommendfor anyone Youdon? t havetobeaheadof school if youdo that program, but it doesshow what it wouldbeliketohavethejob. Thenext link in thechain, then, isbecomingAssistant Head of School at Galloway?
Exactly,I got theopportunityto cometoGallowayinAtlantaand becometheAssistant Headof School, anddogreat worklike helpingtocreateaPre-K through12 experiential learningprogram.SoI wasabletostart experiencingthat schoolwideimpact.
What excitesyou about coming toMVSand assumingtheHead of School role?
I?vebeenfortunatetoseealot of independent schools, bothinmy owncareer andalsogoingon accreditationvisitsandthingslike that, andthefirst thingthat getsme excitedabout MVSisthat it istruly oneof thethought leadersin independent schools.Thingslike theImmersionMethodandthe learningphilosophythat MVSwas foundeduponiswherealot of schoolsaretryingtogotoday And yet,we?vebeendoingit at MVSfor over 50years!It?sreallycompelling for methat thisschool wehavein Dayton,Ohio, canbealighthouse school for othersandisreallyonthe forefront of whereeducationis heading That?shugefor me The other piecewasjust thinkingabout
myownprioritiesasaneducator andaparent, andmybelief inthe child-centered,whole-child approachthat wehaveat MVS, alongsidetheexperiential learning andimmersivepiece.I know that?s what myownchildrenneed, and that childreningeneral will thrive intheMVSenvironment and becometheir best selves
What aresomethingsthat you hopetoachievein anew school setting, and what?syour approach togettingtoknow a new school community?
Myfirst goal istoget toknow the communityaswell asI can:faculty, staff, students, families, alumni, everyone Youcantalk about what a communityislikeandwhat it values, but youhavetoexperience everythingfirsthandtoreally understandit.I'mlookingforward tomeetingwithpeople, hearing their stories, andlearningabout whyMVSisspecial for them That's probablythemost important thing whenit comestobuilding connections
Thesecondpiecefor meistogaina deeper understandingof how MVS runs:what theoperationsarelike, what arethetraditions, what arethe thingsthat areimportant tothe school, andsoon BecauseI needto beabletosharethestoryof the school reallyearlyon, whether it?s withfamiliesor community partnersor anyoneelse.I want tobe abletoconfidentlysaytothose people, assoonaspossible,?Thisis whoweare, andthisiswhat wedo? What that meansinpracticeis listeningfirst, insteadof speaking asmuch, andaskingthoughtful questionstolearnmore It means findingout people?sinterestsand meetingpeoplewheretheyare And it meansleadingbywalkingaround andbeingvisible, whether it?sat an event after school or inthecar line inthemorning.I workthecarpool hereat Gallowayonceaweekjust to sayhi tofamilies It?sgoingtobe reallyimportant that peopleget to seemeout there, becausethat?swho weareat MVS
How can theMVScommunity support you asan incoming Head of School?
I thinkthefirst thingisjust to understandthat I don? t know
everything, andsoI'll need everyone'shelpasI learnabout the communitythroughthose meaningful conversationsand sharingof stories.Therearealot of eventsandtraditionsthat makeup lifeat MVS,andI don? t presumeto know everythingabout themuntil I get achancetobetheremyself and learnfromyouall Andtheother thingthat I?daskisjust patienceasI trytouploadall thegreat thingswe doandall thethingsI learnabout thecommunity?anytimeyoutake onanew job,it?skindof like drinkingfromafirehoseinthe beginningwithall thethingsto learnandprocess
What aresomethingsthat you liketodooutsideof school life?
It might soundalittlecliche,but I lovebeingadadandbeingwithmy kids.If wehaveachancetodo something,we?regonnado something,whether that?sriding
bikes,or coachingtheir sports teams,or takingthemtoaDayton Flyersgame?just enjoyingtimeasa familyinwhatever waywecan.I?m someonewhoworksreallyhard, but I alsotrynot totakemyself too seriously, andI trytomakesurewe havefuninwhat wedo Andthen for me,I just reallyliketotrynew things, whether it?sgoingtoanew restaurant or checkingout anew park.Exploringbringsmealot of joy.Clairewaspokingfunat melast night becauseI alwaysusethis Cervantesquote, that ?thejourney ismoreimportant thantheinn? Becauseit?strue, right? It?sabout thegettingthere That?swhat brings mejoyinlife, isthoseexperiences that weget tohavetogether
That?sagreat sentiment I?m surethere?ll benoshortageof peoplewith recommendations for thingstoexplorein Ohio
I can? t wait!
How old areyour children?
Nine, seven, andfive.Calebwill be infifthgradenext year,Bennett will beinthird, andVirginiawill bein kindergarten They?realready excitedabout thenew adventure andwhat it will beliketolivein Dayton, andthey?vebeenasking somegoodquestions. We?reexcited tocomeback totheschool in Februaryasafamilysotheycansee MVSthewayClaireandI haveseen it,andof courseClaireandI are excitedtoattendtheMVSGalaas well andcontinuetomake connections
We?reexcited towelcomeyou back!Isthereanythingelsethat you?d likeour readerstoknow about you?
If there?sonethingI want all our communitymemberstoknow,it?s just that ClaireandI areabsolutely thrilledtobejoiningthis community It?sabenefit that she?s taught at MVSandknowswhat an MVSeducationlookslike, andwe?re lookingforwardtoit not just becauseI havetheopportunitytobe Headof School, but becauseour kidsaregoingtohavethe opportunitytothriveinthis amazinglearningenvironment We can? t wait todiginandget toknow peopleandbeinvolvedand everythingelse, becauseweknow how great MVSis.We?resoexcited. What wasyour own journey like asascholar-athlete?
Well,I got intosportsasakid becausemygrandparentsjust wantedtoget meoff thecouch! Theyput meineverything: basketball, baseball, football, wrestling, karate, but noneof it reallystuck. Finally,my grandmother tookmeout tothe trackandsaid?Just gorunwith thesekids?Andthecoaches realizedthat I wasgood, andI wasn? t gettingtired, andI was keepingupwitheveryone Sotrack becamemysport
What wasthenameof theteam or clubthat you joined?
WillingboroTrack Club, whichisin myhometown,Willingboro,New Jersey At that time,at least,it was oneof themost successful track clubsinthecountry Therewasa point from1992to2006wherethe clubwasundefeatedintrack meets; I wasonfour statechampionship winningteams.
Wow?what wasit liketobepart of aprogram likethat?
It wasfunny, becausewhenI wasin mylast coupleyearsof highschool, gettingrecruitedbycolleges, alot of coacheswouldask me?Wherehave youbeen?Whyhavewenever heard of youupuntil now??Andit was becauseall thekidsinfront of meat WillingboroTrack Clubwereso goodthat theywereall going Division1for college, andsowere thekidsinfront of them, andsoon, soI hadtorunJV![Laughter]
It?slikein theNFL,whereyou
havesecond-stringrunningbacks from Alabamaor wherever gettingdraftedin thefirst round. Exactly,it wassuchadeepprogram AndI lovedbeingpart of theclub Wewouldtravel everyyear for nationals, whichwasabig attraction. That wasusuallydown southor ontheWest Coast.Tome, it meant that oncesummer came, I?dalwaysbetraveling, seeingnew places, andexperiencingthingsI hadn? t hadthechancetoexperience before Plus,it didn? t hurt that we weresuccessful!Myfirst year running,wewereAll-Americansfor our relay, andI kept progressingand gettingbetter.I fell inlovewiththe sport, andI havelifetimefriends fromthat clubthat arelikebrothers What wasyour high school experiencelike?
I went toBurlingtonCounty Instituteof Technology, whichwas acompetitiveschool whereyouhad totakeanentrancetest andyouhad topickamajor tospecializein. At thetime,I wasinterestedindoing computer science, andI got computer certifiedinhighschool, studiedprogramming, all that good stuff But thethingwas,BCIT didn? t haveatrack program SoI was doingall mytrack stuff outsideof school Likethisyear at MVS, Ashley[Ohlemacher ?23] committedtotheUniversityof Minnesotafor rowing, whichwe don? t offer at theschool, soshewas participatingat theclublevel for DaytonBoat Club Alot of my classmatesat BCIT didn? t know I wasthisbigtrack guy Theyheard about medoingcrosscountry,
becausewehadacrosscountry teamandwewontheschool?sfirst crosscountrychampionship. But unlesstheywereinthetrackand fieldworldthemselves, nooneat school knew anythingabout my indoor andoutdoor track career WhentheyheardI wasgetting offersfromcollegeprograms, they werelike,?Wait, what isit that you evendo?!?[Laughter]
Wheredidyou endupgoingfor college?
I went toKeanUniversityin Elizabeth,NJ.I got mydegreein businessmanagement, andI wasa captainontheir track team My planhadalwaysbeentoget my degreeandthenpursuemybiggoal of goingtotheOlympics Tomakeit all thewaytothat level isso difficult for track.Youhavetobein thetopthreeinthecountryinyour event. After college,I signed professionallywithAdidas,soI was runningwithAdidasGardenState TrackClub, andI startedtryingto makealivingandbalancemylove for track withbeingfinancially stable, whichmost peoplecan? t do just throughrunning.I workedin HRfor about eight years, andI was helpingout coachingwithsome AAUclubs I endedupgettingabad kneeinjury, andthat wasthe catalyst for metoconsider coaching full-time
Wheredidyou get your first coachingjob?
Myfirst bigjobwasat Montclair StateUniversity.I appliedfor their headcoachingpositioninitially, but I didn? t reallyhavealot of
experience, sotheyhiredadifferent guy But heneededanassistant, and theygavehimall theresumesof the peoplewhohadappliedfor thehead coachposition.Andit turnedout thisguyknew mybrother Justin throughfootball, andhecalled Justintoseewhat I wasabout, and Justinvouchedfor meprettyhard, soI got thejob!I went back to school for mymaster'sdegree, andI now havetwomaster's,onein athleticcoachingand administrationfromConcordia UniversityIrvineandonein educational leadershipfrom WilliamPatersonUniversity That set meupfor thenext thing, which wastolookfor ajobasadirector of athleticsat ahighschool Myfirst jobout of mymaster'sprogramwas at Pioneer AcademyinWayne,New Jersey,whichisaPreK-12 independent school witharound 376kids
What wasit likeat Pioneer? One of thebigthingsI know from our conversationsbeforewasthat the school didn? t even haveagym on campusat that point
That'sright!I wasPioneer's first-ever AD,andit wasmy first-ever ADjob. But their administrationsaid, wewant youto leadthisprogram, andwe?rewilling tosupport yousoyoucanbe successful Sothefirst challenge wastoimagine, wheredowego, and how canwebuildit fromtheground up?I imaginedit beingaripple effect, buildingcommunity awarenessfirst, sowecouldget statewideawareness, andthen national awareness Alongwiththat camealot of trial anderror, anda lot of networking I hadtoget into thecommunity, meet peoplewith different ideas, andbuilda professional networkof other
athleticdirectorsandseewhat their processwas Wewereabrand-new program, soweweren? t affiliated withtheNJSIAA[New JerseyState InterscholasticAthletic Association],andoneof our first big decisionswastofigureout if it benefitedustojointhat state organizationor goindependent Theother part of thepuzzlewas figuringout what sportswewanted tooffer that wouldfit our budget andalsohaveprebuilt interest alreadyinthestudent population. Andbasedonour analysis,we figuredout that our mainsports weregoingtobesoccer, basketball, andvolleyball, andwecouldoffer thoseall thewaydownthrough lower school, andwecoulddo programsfor bothboysandgirls.
You endedup nationally ranked for boys?basketball at onepoint, correct?
Yeah,Pioneer wasrankedfor high school boys?basketball nationally, andthat wasprobablyour peak programcompetition-wise Our highschool boys?soccer teamalso got tobeoneof thetopprogramsin our region.Andthat wasjust infour years' timeonthejob! It wasagreat learningexperienceandshowed what wecoulddowithour potential
What excitesyou about the opportunity at MVS,now that you?vebeen herefor alittlebit? Well,it doesn? t hurt that here, the campushastwobasketball gyms! [Laughter]But really,it?sthefact that there?ssomuchpotential at thisschool.Just likeat Pioneer, MVSisaveryacademicallydriven institution, sowe'realreadystrong inthat regard I seeMVSasthekind of school that hasall thelittlethings inplacetosupport averysuccessful
athleticprogram Andat MVS,you haveathleticteamsthat are established, not just startingfrom scratch. We?vehadbothrecent and historical successingolf, andboys? andgirls?tennis, andtrack. Now,it?s amatter of tryingtokeepthings progressingwhereweneedthemto goandmovinginadirectionwhere wecanput ourselvesinthe spotlight locally, statewide, even nationally. And,onapersonal level, MVSisagreat school for myson, Kai,who?sinEC1thisyear.
What aresomethingssofar this year that you?dliketohighlight?
Oneof thebest thingsabout our sportsteamsright now at MVSis that evenat thehighschool level, we?reveryyoung, wewon? t belosing alot of our athletestograduation thistimearound. And,at themiddle school level, wehavealot of talent beingdevelopedtocomeup.Inour younger grades, thereareathletes doingsportsinsideandoutsideof school, playingonclubteams, being part of alocal program I alsothink we?vegot great coachesonstaff Andnumbers-wise,we?reseeinga lot of goodresults, better thanwhat we?veseeninthepast?I just got resultsfromour secondswimmeet of theyear, andwe?vebrokena wholehandful of school recordsat thispoint intheseason Our participationnumbersareup, tothe point wherewehavesomethinglike 35%of theschool participatingin sportsduringthewinter season, almost 150kids.I thinkwe?reina placewherewiththeright commitment, great thingscan happen

FOOD FOR THOUGHT
Can you tell mealittlebit about your timeat MVS?
Yeah!I cametoMVSasajunior inhighschool,soI wastherefor twoyears I grew upinthe Daytonarea, andI startedout at Bellbrook HighSchool I was feelinglikeI wantedtochallenge myself moreinhighschool, and mymomhappenedtoworkwith AnneGriffith'shusbandEd,and Annewasabiologyteacher at MVS.So,that?show myfamily foundout about theschool ComingtoMiami Valleywasan incredibleexperience.I remember doingawalkthrough daybeforemyfirst dayat school, andI just felt anotable difference I remember feeling likekidsat MVSwerebeing treatedalmost likecollege students, withtheabilitytogoto classesasweneeded, having breaks, havingalot more freedominour academic choices It wasagreat all-around
experienceintermsof getting challengingopportunitiesand pushingmyself innew ways.I just lovedit fromthestart
Wasit difficult tocomein duringyour junior year, later in your high school career?
Tosomeextent, yes, but not in everyway.Therewerefewer peopleat MVS,andit wasalot moreclose-knit It felt likeyou reallydidget toknow most peopleprettywell, andeveryone wasverycomfortableinhaving youjointhem
What wereyour Immersions duringyour junior and senior year?
Mysenior year,I went toTurkey, andI think it wasathree, maybe two-weekadventure.It wasn? t thefirst international tripI had beenon, but it wasdefinitelythe first tripI?dtakenwhereI was trulyexperiencinganother culturerather thanjust looking for recreation Duringthat
Immersion, wekept ajournal, whichI actuallyfoundagain whenmymomwasmovinga coupleyearsago I openedit up andwasjust readingthe reflectionsonall our different experiences, thedifferent things wesaw That wasanincredible thing Andmyother Immersion waswhenI workedasanintern at theDaytonDailyNews At the time,I wasinterestedinbeinga journalist, andI wantedtoget a senseof what it waslikeand what theday-to-daynormswere I?vefound that?stheamazing thingabout Miami Valley,is that even if that wasn? t your Immersion, but just somethingyou were interested in,thereare peopleat theschool that are goingtoconnect you with the peopletomakesurethat you can explorethat passion. What areyou currently doing for your job?
I?mafoodsystemsresearcher andProgramOfficer at the Center for aLivableFuture (CLF),whichisanacademic center basedat theJohns HopkinsBloombergSchool of PublicHealth Our workcovers research, policy, advocacy, and education, primarilyfor graduatestudents. At thepolicy interface,I primarilyworkon local, state, andregional policy, but I havecolleagueswhoalso workat thefederal level We workonavarietyof issues relatedtofoodsystems: promotingaccesstohealthyand sufficient food, addressingfood insecurity, andalsolookingat different concernswith agricultural production
Abigpart of myroleisrelatedto climatechangeandthefood system, not onlyintermsof how what weeat andhow weproduce our foodaffectsclimatechange, but alsohow climatechangewill affect our foodsupplyinthe future
I?vealsodonesomeworkrelated tourbanagriculture, everything fromthepoliciesthat support growersinurbanfarmsand gardenstothepotential concernswithcontaminantsin soil andhow growerscanfollow best practicestoensurethey don? t get exposedtotoomany contaminantsof concern
Another part of myworkat the local andstatelevel issupporting foodpolicycouncils There?s actuallyonethat weworkwithin theDaytonarea, the MontgomeryCountyFood EquityCoalition.Thesegroups bringtogether peoplefrom acrossthefoodsystemtotalk andwork toaddressfoodsystem challengesintheir communities Afoodpolicycouncil might work
tochangezoninglawstosupport urbanagriculture,or tobringin grocerystores,or theymight try tochangethefoodsthat are beingprocuredbylocal schools or hospitalsor government agencies Really, theytackle whatever issuesarisethat are important tothecommunitythat they?reserving.
Our roleat theCenter for a LivableFuture, andsomethingI spendabout half mytimedoing, ishelpingcoordinatethese councilsacrosstheUS, essentiallysharinggood practicesandlearningfromeach other.Alot of theworkisbased onnetworking Theother half of mytimeisspent onresearch. That?salot of work and alot of hatsyou?rewearing. How did you get intothisfield?
Well,it startedwithaninterest inhealthyeating, andmaybethis isoneof those? What didMVS dofor you??moments, becauseI first startedgettinginterestedin foodsystemsissueswhenI came toMVS.Myjunior year, wehada summer readingassignment for thewholeupper school where wehadtoreadonebooktogether, andthat year thebookwas Animal,Vegetable,Miracleby BarbaraKingsolver. That was thefirst introductionI hadto thinkingabout whereour food actuallycomesfrom.I hadnever experiencedgrowingmyown food.Eventhoughmy grandparentshadafarm,it felt verydistant, andseparatefrom myexistence. That ledmeto readMichael Pollan?sOmnivore?s DilemmaasI kindof went down therabbit holeof thinkingabout whereour foodcomesfromand understandingthe interconnectednessof our food system.Andthen, whenI went to
JohnsHopkinsfor undergrad,I continuedonthistrendof learningmore, andluckily, there wastheCenter for aLivable Futureright there.
Asfar asgettingstartedat the center,I reachedout, asan incomingfreshman, tosomeone at theCLF,basicallyasking?Hey, doyouever haveanyinternships that I coulddo?" Andsure enough, theydidhavearesearch assistant position,SoI started workingasaresearchassistant asafreshman, andthenworked at thecenter for theentiretyof myundergraduatecareer I came ontoworkfull timefor about oneyear after I graduated, thenI went abroadanddidmymasters, andthenI cameback and continuedworkingat theCLF full time.
Wheredid you doyour masters?
I went toCardiff University,in Wales. It wasaFulbright experiencethroughtheUS-UK Fulbright Commission. It was perfect, becausetheCardiff UniversitySchool of Geography andPlanninghadjust started offeringadegreeinFood,Space, andSociety, whichwas specificallyfocusedonplanning andgeographyrelatedtofood systems.Thinkingabout it now, it reallyfeelsliketheright match at theright time, becauseseveral of thefacultywhowerethere whowereleadingthat program havesinceleft, andthey?ve changedtheir offerings Soit was oneof thoseamazing coincidencesintermsof what I waslookingfor inanopportunity andaprogram
Hearingabout that,and the wholeJohnsHopkins experiencebeforethat,it
really feelslikeyou were meant tobeheredoingwhat you?redoing.
It isfunnytothink about the journey, andfollow thechain I mean,I might not havestartedat all if I hadn? t pickedupAnimal, Vegetable,Miracleback in2008, youknow?I don? t know whenI would?vecomeacrossthat book inanother context, andit just happenedtobeasummer readingassignment.
I told Barb[Cleary] that we would behavingthismeeting, and sheremembersyou asa studentsand sendsher love. Werethereany specificMVS faculty membersthat you remember encouragingyour exploration in health,or in your experiencesin general?
I developedclosebondswith several teachersat MVS Dr Clearywasdefinitelyoneof them, becauseshereallyhelped grow mywritingskills.I wasthe editor of Phloem&Xylem, the school newspaper, duringmy senior year, whenI thought I might gointojournalism AndI thinkthisiswhat?sinterestingin general whenyoulook back on your school experience, because asastudent inhighschool,I didn? t realizethefull rangeof opportunitiesthat couldexist in termsof writing Asakid, you haveavisionof theseboxes, like, "what doyouwant tobewhen yougrow up,"andinyour head theoptionstendtobethingslike doctor,or lawyer,or journalist,or author.Thereareparticular buckets,or it seemsthat way whenyou?rethat age.At thetime, I didn? t reallythink about the intersectionbetweenscience andwriting But alot of mywork todayheavilyinvolveswriting, becauseI writealot of academic
manuscripts
Theother facultymember I workedreallycloselywithwas Dr.[Ashwi] Birdi, especially whenI tookAPBiology I usea lot of thoseskillstoday, becauseI sit at thisintersectionof the natural sciencesandthesocial sciences.Wecollect alot of quantitativedata, andwethink about that datainmultipleways, connectingit tobiology, earth science, publichealth, andsoon, all kindof tryingtofindthat line that connectstoour essential question:how canweeat sothat it?sbetter for peopleandbetter for theplanet.
Wehavetobalancealot of different variables:what arethe nutritionimplicationsof different dietarychoices, what aretheimplicationsfor food safety, andfor greenhousegas emissions, landuse, water use, pesticideuse, andsoon. But someof thosefundamental tenetscomeright back tothe basicsof what youlearnedin highschool, whether it?sbiology or English.
Sittingherelisteningtoyou,I think it?ssointerestingthat AnneGriffith and her family wereinstrumental in your comingtoMVS,becausenow Mrs.Griffith isour Director of Environmental Sustainability, and she overseesour school greenhouseand gardensand everything She?sbeen workinghard on alot of things, sherecently helped MVSsecureanew grant from Montgomery County related torecyclingand reducing food waste, and she?sbeen honored by thisorganization called Dayton Regional Green for her work on
sustainability at theschool
Oh,wow,I hadnoideathat she wasdoingthat!That?sgreat work.
What would you chooseas your favoritepart of your job?
It?shardtosay!I lovethepeopleI workwith I think oneaspect of myactual jobthat I really appreciateistheprocessof producing, finding, and synthesizingexistingevidencein academicresearch, andthen translatingthat intosomething that?srelevant for ageneral audience, whether it?stochange policyor educatekey influencers Kindof servingasa bridgebetweentheacademic communityandthegeneral public.
Oneexamplethat standsout is relatedtourbanagriculture. Thiswasback whenI wasdoing mymaster?s,but I wasstill workingremotelypart timefor theCenter, andSenator Debbie Stabenow [D-MI] was, andstill is,thechair of theUSSenate CommitteeonAgriculture, Nutrition& Forestry
At that point intime, theSenate wasintheprocessof negotiating theNational FarmBill, whichis actuallyupfor renegotiation soon But at that time, the committeewasdebating whether toincorporate legislationtosupport urban farmingandurbangrowing, and Sen Stabenow wantedto understandwhat theevidence actuallysaid
Soweendedupsynthesizing maybe150researchstudiesand comingout withthekey takeaways That wasareally rewardingexperience, andthe
Senateendedupusingour analysistohelpwritetheUrban AgricultureAct of 2016. And? thisisafunnystory? my cowriter onthat article, who's alsomysupervisor at thecenter, isanMVSalum
What?!You?rekiddingme I can't believethishadn't come up yet!
Yeah, her nameisAnnePalmer ['81]!She'stheDirector of Practiceat CLF.Weonlyfound out webothwent toMVS becauseshewasreviewingmy resumetowritea recommendationletter for my Fulbright application Like, what aretheoddsthat bothof us wouldhavebeenMVSalumnae, andthenendupworking together andnot evenknow it until I wasgettingreadytodomy master?sprogram Wow!
Yeah! But Annewastheonewho assignedthat literaturereview to meandworkedonit withme So that?soneexampleof aproject I reallyenjoyed
Another onewedidmore recentlywasrelatedtomeat alternatives.Youmight'veheard about plant-basedmeat alternativesandcell-basedmeat, especiallyrecentlybecauseone formof cell-basedmeat wasjust approvedbytheFDA Advocates for meat alternativessaythey're better for theclimate, they'll reduceanimal suffering, they couldpotentiallybebetter for healthdependingonwhich product you?relookingat, andso on Andsoweneedtocritically examinewhat theresearch actuallyshows, andwhat questionsstill remain Sothat?s another project that I findreally fulfilling, bringingtogether the different piecesandthenturning it intosomethingcohesivethat
peoplecantakewiththem
Soareyou apicky eater becauseof all this knowledge?
[Laughter]I wouldsaythat I try toeat accordingtowhat I?ve learnedthroughresearchand what thesciencesuggests, but I alsorecognizethat therearealot of factorsthat influencewhat individualseat that arebeyond their control.Thingslikepolicies that affect what thingscost, whether they?reaccessibleor available, thetimethat wehave inour daytocook foodor preparesomething.Thereareso manydifferent aspectsthat influenceour individual decisions, andsoalot of our workat theCLFistryingto changethepoliciesandthe environment andthesystems aroundustomakeit easier to makehealthier choices,or more sustainablechoices.
On that note, how doyou feel thingsaregoingnowadays when it comestoyour work? I imagineit ebbsand flows. Yes,it definitelydoes.Thereare dayswhentheworkfeelsreally overwhelming. For example, sometimesmycolleaguesandI will bereadingadocument from 15yearsagoandwesay,gosh, thesepeoplearemakingthe exact sameargumentsthat we are, wehaven't movedforwardat all!But thereareother times whereI look aroundandseethe changesintermsof general awarenessof theseissues,of foodandclimateinparticular
Here'sanexample:back in2015, mycolleaguesandI startedan assessment lookingat if some individual weretoshift their diet inacertaincountry, what would that meanfor healthandother
environmental outcomes?And wepresentedsomepreliminary researchat theCOP21UN
ClimateChangeConferencein Paris,whichwasthesame conferencethat producedthe ParisAgreement
What exactly went intothat?
TheParisAgreement was basicallyadeal wherecountries cametogether tomakedecisions aroundtheir commitmentsto reducinggreenhousegas emissionsandtokeepglobal warmingtowithin15to2 degreesCelsius Socountries madecommitmentstothat from their variousperspectives, and that wasall happeningwhenwe werethere However, verylittle discussionwashappening aroundfoodsystemsand climate, evenwhenthefood systemasawholecontributes about athirdof greenhousegas emissionswhenyouconsider fromproductionall thewayto consumption, includingthe transportation, thedisposal, and waste
Yeah,absolutely
Right,it'smorewell-knownnow, but at thisconferencein2015,it washardlybeingdiscussed And therewerealot of reasonsfor that Therewerecultural reasonsor concerns.People don? t want totell peoplewhat to do At that point intime, and evenstill today,it'salot easier to talkabout energy,or changing thegrid,or somethingmore removedfromthesevery personal aspects Therearealot of emotionsandcultureand heritagetiedupinour food We understoodall of that at thetime, but still, whenwewereat COP 21talkingabout foodand climate,it wasarelativelynew
topic,or at least arelatively untouchedone
Anyway,fast-forwardtothis November,andthey?renow upto COP27,whichwasat Sharm el-SheikhinEgypt.I wasn? t there,but thisyear?sconference hadawholedaydedicatedtofood systems.Thingsarehappening, andthingsarechanging Injust sevenyears,thefieldhasbecome verycrowded
Soit?sexciting,andit?satotally different experience,because now,insteadof just tryingtoget foodsystemsontheagenda, we?rethinkingokay,what area arewegoingtocarveout?What isgoingtomakeour work different,or wherecanweadd value?That?sagoodproblemto have.
Socirclingback, then, what?s an important thingor takeaway that you got from TheMiami Valley School?
I appreciatedtheindividualized
attentionandsupport that we hadtodeveloptheskillsfor thingswewereinterestedin. Duringthisconversation,I actuallyrememberedI wasalso interestedinresearchat MVS I wasinterestedinjournalism first, but I wasalsointerestedin research, andI saidthat toDr Birdi.Shehelpedmeget set up withasummer volunteer experienceat alabwhenI wantedtoget that hands-on physical experience It wasvery muchawet lab, soit was different topicallyfromwhat I?m doingnow, but it helpedme understandwhat it lookedlikein practicetobedoingresearch. So that exampleshows how? buildingonthe individualizedattentionwithin classesandeverypart of the educational journeywithin MVS? it showshow MVS teachersarereallyalways workingwithyou.Speakingjust for myself,I think that attention
andthat opportunityhelpedme togrow alot inpiecingtogether what I wasinterestedin. What keepsyou occupied outsideof your professional life?
Well, right now alot of my personal lifeisspent withmy husband,Homer, andour two wonderful children,Hypatiaand Helaine Webought our first housethisyear, sowemoved recently, andit?sbeena whirlwindof atime. But it'salso beenalot of fun I will sayI've beenprettyconsistently involvedingardening.I was involvedwithacommunity gardenat Hopkins, andnow we'reexcitedbecausewe're buildingabackyardgardenat our house.
Another passionproject that I've beenworkingon,on-and-off,is onpublictransit advocacy. BeforeI hadmyfirst daughter,I tookatransportationadvocacy course, whichwasledbya communityorganizationherein Baltimore.Aspart of that class, theygaveusanassignment:to comeupwithanissuethat we wantedtochangerelatedto transportation. It couldbe somethinglikeaddingabikelane or fixingatrafficpattern.Somy project wasthat I wantedto encourageJohnsHopkins affiliatestotakepublictransit moreregularly Therearealot of universitiesthat alreadydothis, whether theysubsidizepublic transit passesfor their affiliates or theyjust maketransportation freealtogether Andwhenyou thinkabout it,therearealready barrierswithpublic transportationintermsof just learningwherethetrainsor busesgo, whereyour stopis, and soon.Therearealot of learning
curves But fromaclimate perspectiveandfromanequity perspective,it?scritical that we incentivizetransit through different means.Thisproject is onewaythat wecanuseour institution?spower, beingthe largest employer inMaryland,to put ahugeinvestment intoour publictransportationsystem. It hasn? t cometopassyet, but there aresomeconversations happeningwithintheuniversity administrationnow
We?restartingtoget more research, too.Wegot asurvey out for thefirst timethat started askingaffiliateshow theywere gettingaround Then,if weoffer anincentivedowntheroad,we canmeasurethebeforeandafter andseeif it changesbehavior So
that?sasidevolunteer project that I?vebeendoingbecauseI believeverystronglyinit. Asyoucantell, climateisavery important issuefor me And that?ssomethingI feel likeI also startinglearningabout inhigh school:thecrisisthat we?re facingandtryingtofindwaysto tangiblyaddressit inour lives,so it?snot thisoverwhelming doomsdayscenario, but instead animpetustoask ourselvesif therearewayswecan continuallyworktoimproveour system.Aretherewayswecan makeourselveshealthier and morefulfilled, whilealso addressingsomeof theselarger concerns?I think thereare, and I'mhappytobeworkingtowards that
How did you meet your husband,if you don? t mind sharing?
Not at all? wemet through mutual friendsinBaltimore He wasintourbangardeningin BaltimoreCity, andhewas workingonsustainability efforts, andsoobviouslyour pathscrossed Weknew each other beforeI went abroad, and thenwereconnectedwhenI movedback. We?vebeentogether fiveandahalf yearsnow
I feel likewhenI cameto Baltimore,I wasn? t intendingto put downrootshere, but it just kindof endedupthat way,and it?sbeenareallyfunand interestingjourney
Thankssomuch for sharing your journey with us.And keep up thegood work!
