Fun in the Sun for EVERYONE” is scheduled for Friday, June 7 from 9 am to Noon and includes beach activities for people with special needs, their families, and friends. All ages and abilities are invited to join in the community fun! The event will be held beach front of the Marriot Surf Watch Resort.

This annual event gives all community members, no matter their age or ability, the opportunity to enjoy the beach in a safe and inclusive setting. Activities will include: paddle boarding, boogie boarding, surfing, sand castle building, music, relaxation and more. Lifeguards and volunteers will be included in the event to ensure a safe environment for all. Adult/caregiver supervision is required for all attendees. Shuttles from the parking lot to the beach will be provided. Beach access is wheelchair accessible.

“Fun in the Sun for EVERYONE” has been built off a 2015 Special Needs Surf Day, started by local high school surfer, James Bartholomew, who wanted to provide a fun day of surfing for his sister and her classmates with special needs.

HILTON HEAD ISLAND TAXES

REAL ESTATE AND PERSONAL PROPERTY TAX

There are many tax districts in Beaufort County each with a corresponding tax rate. The map above will guide to for the local area.

REAL ESTATE TAX AT PURCHASE

When you purchase real estate the county will use the purchase value to calculate the taxes due. This will be reduced to 4% of the purchase if you are to reside in the property and 6% if you use it for any other purpose. The result will then be subject to the millage for your district.

REAL ESTATE TAX AFTER PURCHASE

The county uses an assessed value, determined by them, to calculate continuing real estate taxes. This is also reduced to 4% for residents or 6% for nonresidents. That number is multiplied by the corresponding millage rate to determine the amount of taxes. Resident millage rate is lower than nonresidents as residents do not pay that portion of the millage relating to school operations.

IF YOU ARE OVER 65

One-year residents, or more, who are over 64, or blind, or have a disability may reduce their assessed value of their primary residence by $50,000 before reducing the assessed value to 4%.

AN EXAMPLE

Purchase Price = $300,000 X 4 or 6 percent X the millage rate shown on the map above for your district = taxes due. 300,000 X 4% (resident) = 12,000 X .102 millage rate in Hilton Head Plantation = $1,224 in taxes due.

Our part of the country is not that much different than any other part of the world. Insects live everywhere…except the polar ice caps. Insects are fine until they invade your living space. Here are some amazing, and perhaps somewhat troubling, facts about insects:

• There are more insects in one square mile of empty field than there are people in the world.

• Ter mites cause more damage to homes each year than all fires, floods, and storms combined.

• When a queen ant dies, the colony can’t survive for more than a few months because worker ants can’t reproduce.

• Ants can carry around 50 times their own weight which is the equivalent of an average man carrying 8,000 pounds.

• Cockroaches can hold their breath up to 40 minutes, can live nearly a month without food, and they can live two weeks after being decapitated.

• Mosquitoes are the deadliest animal on Earth due to the diseases they spread, killing nearly 1 million people per year.

• Houseflies can see behind them. Their compound eyes allow them to process visual information seven times faster than humans.

• Bed bug hatchlings are so small they can pass through a stitch hole in a mattress.

• Only female mosquitoes bite humans.

• Fleas can jump 50 times their height. That is the equivalent of human with a vertical leap of 300 feet.

• Cockroaches can run 50 body lengths per second. That’s the equivalent of a person running 140mph.

• Subterranean Termites never sleep. All they do is eat, and they produce over 120 tons of methane each year.

• Bed bugs can ingest seven times their own weight in blood. That’s the

equivalent of a person drinking 120 gallons of liquid.

• Female rats can produce as many as 84 offspring per year. Newborn rats reach sexual maturity in as little as three months.

• Mosquitoes can spot their next meal from over 160 feet away.

• Houseflies taste with their feet.

Having moved to the Lowcountry from the New York Metro area one thing stood out working with clients. When discussing window treatments, everyone always repeated “I want to preserve my view”. Whether the room in question overlooked a marsh, golf course, wooded area or ocean, it is always the same litany, “Do not ruin my view”.

Having shopped for real estate myself, I remembered every Realtor mentioning the view before the other features of the property itself. This home, lot, etc, is desirable because of the view.

I do very much enjoy the beautiful place where we live, however, a room rarely feels finished without window treatments. When should I talk to my lender?

There are many benefits to speaking with a lender early. Understanding how much money you’re approved for will help define your budget when you meet with your builder to plan your home’s features and amenities. Furthermore, most lenders require that you close on your loan prior to breaking ground, with most

construction-to-permanent loans taking 30-45 days to close. So, talk to your lender early in the homebuilding process to discuss your preferred budget and timing. What should I expect during the construction-to-permanent loan process?

From loan closing to construction to modifying your construction-topermanent loan, know the process. Before you get started on your build, reach out to your lender to understand each stage of the lending process, what’s required to get approved for a construction-topermanent loan, and the terms to paying off your loan. If your build takes longer than expected, you will need to know what your lender will require regarding payment.

Is my loan really a construction-topermanent loan?

Some lenders will require additional underwriting before modifying your loan. This means another round of document collection prior to modifying your loan and possibly a new rate. With a true onetime close construction-to-permanent loan, you’ll avoid going through the loan process again after your build. Be sure to ask your lender if your construction-topermanent loan will require additional underwriting and another rate lock.

Don’t shy away from asking questions to understand the financing for your new custom construction. It will help for a smooth process between you, your lender, and your builder – all with the common goal of getting you into your dream home.

If you are a member of an electric cooperative, you might already be aware of the energy saving programs available to you. In an initiative known as Beat the Peak, Palmetto Electric Cooperative and other South Carolina electric cooperatives are working hard to manage energy use during peak times. Peaks occur on the coldest winter mornings and hottest summer afternoons, when the demand for electricity, and the cost for it, is the highest. By keeping energy usage low during these peak times, the co-op can lower total power costs. Because electric cooperatives are not-for-profit companies, the savings are passed on to the co-op’s members.

By joining Beat the Peak, members can save both energy and money in a variety of ways. First, voluntarily sign up for Beat the Peak alerts to be notified by email, text or voice message at times when you can help reduce electricity use by turning off lights, adjusting your thermostat and delaying the use of major appliances such as hot water heaters, washing machines and clothes dryers. More than 60,000 Beat

the Peak participants throughout the state of South Carolina have helped save a projected $848,000 in wholesale power costs.

For years, Palmetto Electric Cooperative members have had access to H2O Select, an electric water heater program that saves members money each year in water heater rebates and incentives. By heating water when the demand for electricity is low and storing that thermal energy for later use, electric water heaters save members and the cooperative money.

In a similar way, the Smart Thermostat program helps members save by allowing Palmetto Electric to adjust your thermostat during peak energy periods. Cost-Efficient Heating for your Pool

Many pool owners tell us that they really enjoy the experience of a warm pool, but the cost of heating a pool can be significant even with a highly efficient system like a Heat Pump Pool Heater (HPPH).

Here are six methods that will help. Each pool environment is different, and while the value of each method is universal, they are not all universally applicable to a particular pool.

1 | Solar heating is essentially free (there are some small increases in the cost to pump the water through the large solar panels, but it is minimal). The downside of solar is that it rarely meets the needs for a full season of heating demand, or it fails to provide heat fast enough or when the sun isn’t shining. But when solar is available and you have the budget to purchase a solar system with a Heat Pump Pool Heater backup, you can have the best, most economical system available.

2 | If you have a Heat Pump Pool Heater (HPPH) system only, the time of day that you run your HPPH is a system operation parameter you should address. HPPH’s get their heat from the air. So, logically, the best time to run a HPPH is when the air temperature is at its warmest. As long as your filtration is running at the warmest time of the day,

your HPPH will operate at its optimum Coefficiency of Performance (COP). COP is the measure of energy output divided by energy input.

3 | And speaking of COP…the COP is the efficiency rating of the HPPH. As mentioned in item 2, this measure of efficiency changes as the air temperature changes. The unit is more efficient the warmer the air temperature. Another aspect of COP to consider the overall COP rating as applied to the individual model of HPPH you purchase. Not all HPPHs are created equal. If we do a comparison of HPPHs and assume all have the same heating capacity, or BTUh, you will find a variety of COP ratings available on the market. The higher the COP rating, the more efficient the HPPH will be. The percentage difference between one COP rating and another will equate to the percentage savings available between the lower and higher rated COP heater. This means you should buy the highest COP-rated unit your budget allows while making sure the model you select has the capacity, or BTUh, to meet your heating demand. 4 | Controlling evaporation. Heat loss on any pool, heated by any means, is primarily driven by evaporation from the surface of the pool. Upwards

of 75% of heat loss is through this method. So controlling that evaporative loss is key to reducing heating cost. There are three types of blankets that can help control evaporation: Solid, Floating and Liquid. The Liquid blanket is easy to use, and is inexpensive, but also carries the lowest level of effectiveness.

5 | Wind at the surface of the pool creates ripples or small waves on the surface of the pool ultimately accelerating evaporation. So, creating a pool environment that is shielded from wind will greatly help reduce heating cost.

6 | The last method is the pool temperature set point. The warmer you heat your pool water, the more it will cost to keep it warm. Each degree rise in temperature can equate to an approximate 15-18% increase in operation cost. So, while an 88°F pool is nice and toasty warm, it will cost a lot more to maintain than a pool that is held at 85°F.

There is nothing better than a warm pool. These are some tried and true ways to help keep that cost to a minimum.

RELIEF FROM FIBROMYALGIA SYPTOMS

Fibromyalgia is a disorder involving chronic pain and fatigue throughout the body, often resulting in disturbed sleep and an impaired ability to concentrate. It can cause disruptions at work and at home. A study of the effects of hydrotherapy on fibromyalgia patients showed marked benefits. Following a course of hydrotherapy treatment, patients reported improvements in physical functionality, sleep quality, and the ability to do their jobs, accompanied by a reduction in pain intensity, fatigue, stiffness, anxiety, and depression.

RELIEF FROM LOWER BACK PAIN

According to one estimate, 80% of all Americans will suffer from lower back pain at some point. It can make performing everyday activities a difficult and painful challenge. In multiple studies, people living with chronic back pain who underwent hydrotherapy treatment, either on its own or in combination with other treatments, saw a reduction in their symptoms. While these studies do indicate the positive effects of hydrotherapy, they do not replace the advice of a doctor.

DECREASED ANXIETY AND STRESS

Time spent in a hot tub encourages stress-free

relaxation. Before you leave for work in the morning, soaking in your spa for fifteen or twenty minutes can help you begin your day feeling rested and focused. At night, it can help you unwind and leave the stresses of the day behind you. Controlled studies have shown that the use of hydrotherapy can lead to an improved psychological and emotional state.

Since coastal life differs from place to place, there are actually many different types of coastal interior design styles. There’s the Mediterranean style that makes use of that bold, pop of colors so prevalent in Mediterranean cultures. Then

there’s the tropical style which includes plenty of greenery and foliage. In this article, we’re going to explore 5 different beach house decorating ideas that you can use to design the coastal home of your dreams.

If you’ve dabbled a bit in studying various interior design styles, you may be aware that colors like white are quite widely used due to how wonderfully well they complement other shades. The coastal style does keep that factor in mind but it is more focused on using colors that help it look bright and radiant. A big part of coastal life is about embracing the radiance each day presents, whether you’re at home or out enjoying the sun. Bright environments tend to somehow improve the mood and that’s probably one of the reasons why the coastal style is considered so refreshing. All in all, it’s a foolproof way to design a happy setting.

Give the Eyes Some Viewing Distance

The one thing that you should keep in mind when you’re decorating beach cottage homes is that these spaces are meant to be open. Regular homes in the city are small, four-walled spaces that box everything and everyone within them. This is great to create a cozy atmosphere but just like the sea, coastal homes are made to invoke a sense of freedom.

You will see many coastal homes try to minimize the use of walls to divide spaces and instead opt for sectionals. It is not an open layout per se but somewhere in the middle of that and a closed plan. Then there is the idea of designing according to the scenic views outside. Most regular homes don’t have much going on for them in terms of views outside the home but seaside houses have such an edge in this department that you should 100% take advantage of it and design accordingly to let those views be visible from the house.

Sea Motifs Best Done Subtly

There’s a big debate between coastal interior designers regarding the use of sea motifs within the home as beach cottage decor. Sea motifs are basically decor items that invoke the feeling of the sea and the beach. On paper, it sounds like a great idea to have something like that in your coastal home but too often it’s done in a manner that looks either cliche or tacky. Here’s our take on it–sea motifs are great but nail the basic first. Make your house’s overall structure look like a coastal home and then add whatever sea motif you like in moderation. By doing this, your seaside home will look a lot more sophisticated and authentic. It also pays to personalize it with other decor items. After all, your home is meant to reflect your personality primarily.

Uncluttered But Not Minimalist

Just like white is used in a lot of different interior design styles, you will also see the practice of creating uncluttered spaces. This is certainly true for styles like the Scandinavian and the Modern that were inspired by Bauhaus and minimalist principles where form follows function. The coastal style is quite clearly uncluttered but it is not because of minimalism. These homes are uncluttered because their function is to provide an open space where it’s easy to relax. Since clutter tends to make most people subconsciously feel a little restless, it’s important to not hoard furniture in coastal homes. You most certainly can keep items that don’t serve any utilitarian purpose, which is why it is not a minimalist style.

A Sense of Being Carefree

Whether you use your seaside home as a holiday cottage or as a permanent residence, we’re sure you’ll agree that it feels liberating to live in a place so close to the sea. No matter what time it may be, you can always head out to the short. There’s a sense of being carefree, and that’s really the main essence of coastal life.
