Surviving a Remodel

Remodeling can be a pain, but the finished product is usually worth it. Here are some inspiring renovations to get you started.

Remodeling your home is uniquely different from building a new one because your dwelling place becomes the worksite. You live side by side with the project from start to finish. The process takes patience and perseverance and once construction begins, you’ll probably long for simple pleasures like a dust-free home or a fully functioning kitchen or bath. But the end result will be well worth these inconveniences. Here are some tips to help minimize the stress involved with a remodeling project.

Tackle one project at a time

Planning to renovate your kitchen and bathrooms all at once will leave you with no working fixtures for everyday tasks. Spacing these projects out ensures you have running water when you need it.

Do as much as you can before the walls come down

BEFORE

Create a plan, buy materials, and line up subcontractors before you start demo. This limits the duration of your downtime, which helps maintain your sanity.

BEFORE Set up a home within your home

Dust is the worst part of a live-in remodel. To minimize this, create a separate living space in your home and use thick plastic and masking tape to cordon it off from your work area. Use a damp rug to trap dust and prevent boots from tracking it into the living space. And keep a Shop Vac handy for daily pickup.

Take a trip Renovations can be overwhelming at times so give yourself a break when you need it. Spend a weekend at the beach to renew your focus.

Go with the flow Any building project has unforeseen obstacles. As problems arise, be flexible and hold onto a positive outlook knowing that your renovation will be well=worth the headaches.
