Types of Eye Examination Equipment Performing an eye examination involves the use of various types of equipment. These include a field analyzer, lensometer, phoropter, and a retinoscope. There are also two different types of eye examination equipment: consultative and diagnostic.

Lensometer During an eye exam, eye care professionals use lensometers to check the prescription of spectacles. They also use lensometers to verify the correct placement and orientation of lenses in frames. Lensometers can be used to measure the spherical power, cylindrical power, axis, and prism of a lens. This information is important when deciding which prescription to provide to a patient. A lensometer is also useful for checking the strength and center of progressive lenses. A lensometer can be either manual or automatic. Manual lensometers use light sources to make measurements. A specialist must turn the ventometer wheel to make measurements. A digital lensmeter can calculate the power of a lens automatically. This allows optometrists to measure the graduation of progressive lenses in under a minute. A pachymeter and topography device measures the thickness of a patient's eye and ensures the thickness is within acceptable safety limits. These instruments deliver accurate data.
