The heart of Medair

In my work I meet lots of people who ask me “What does Medair do?” It’s a great question, and I often find myself giving a detailed answer about providing shelter, access to clean water, nutrition support, emergency healthcare…and I could go on. Even though that is what Medair does, it feels like an unsatisfactory answer. It may well talk about our professional capability to provide excellent assistance, but it somehow misses the point. The simple answer to this important question is Medair helps people.

Simple, it may be, but it also communicates something of the heart of Medair. We care about people, particularly people who are vulnerable and suffering because of humanitarian crises. And because we care, we want to help.

It's like people who are vulnerable and suffering are somehow part of the family, and it's second nature to help out a family member when they need it. They are our brothers and sisters.

There is something else that we do too. We help those who care about vulnerable people, and those who are suffering. Not everyone can go to Bangladesh to help someone who needs food, shelter and emotional support.

Not everyone can sit with a refugee family in a country that is not their homeland, and share a cup of coffee and a smile. By supporting Medair, you help those who need it the most. This Christmas, please share something of your heart with those who are so grateful to receive such a gift.

BANGLADESH

We help one another When the Rohingya people were fleeing from violence in Myanmar, Kashim travelled to the Bangladesh border to see what was happening.

He saw thousands of Rohingya people waiting in “no man’s land” between Myanmar and Bangladesh, seeking permission to cross the border. He went back the next day with friends, and again the day after that.

Two days later, the army gave Bangladeshi locals like Kashim permission to enter the “no man’s land.”

“The people were exhausted and looked so scared,” said Kashim. “They were mostly women and children and many had their clothes ripped off. The men were often injured; many people were carrying wounded and disabled people in makeshift stretchers made of bamboo sticks. For 13 days, we went there every day to bring water, fruit, and clothes, whatever we could gather.

Many people from our local community went to help.”

Today, Kashim works with Medair to bring highquality humanitarian aid to Rohyinga refugees.

He meets with families, listens to their stories, and identifies the most vulnerable people who need upgraded shelters or treatment for malnutrition.

While he works, Kashim goes the extra mile to show people that he truly cares. Every day he brings biscuits, sweets, and oranges for the children; they love him and follow him around. He treats everyone with respect and they confide in him. “I cannot stand to see people suffering,” he said. “We are all human beings and we should be able to help one another.”

Thanks to your generous gifts and the dedicated work of people like Kashim, more than 25,000 Rohingya people have received upgraded shelter kits to protect them during the monsoon season.

Jafor and Arafa’s shelter was in terrible condition, flooding whenever it rained. “There was no way to keep our shelter dry,” said Arafa.

“Every time the rain came, the ground turned to mud. Now it’s the beginning of the monsoon, and people are saying a cyclone could strike us. I’m very scared!”

Medair and World Concern provided the couple with an upgraded shelter kit and hired a local carpenter to rebuild the shelter to prevent flooding and withstand the wind. “We are grateful that you have come to help,” said Arafa. “Our only option was to pray and wait for kind people to come help us.”

Putting people first Q&A with David Verboom, Medair CEO Q: What does it mean to put people first in humanitarian aid?

The goal of our work is to save and improve the lives of people struggling to survive natural disaster or conflict. Yet it's not just what we do, it’s how we do it.

We aim to approach each person in need as a unique individual and treat them with the compassion and respect they deserve. The heart of Medair is not health services, water, or shelter—it is people.

Q: What are the benefits of putting people first?

We get to show each individual that we really care about them and that their life matters. This has an impact that goes beyond serving people’s physical needs; it shows them that they are not forgotten. We not only save lives in emergencies, we also stay to help rebuild communities and livelihoods. We want people to have hope and confidence for the future.

Q: What are the challenges?

Putting people fi rst means being open and vulnerable to feedback and criticism. It means taking time in a frantic crisis situation to listen to someone’s story.

Putting people first means that people in need remain our highest priority, even more so than the institutional donors who fund our work. In my experience, NGOs can easily become distracted

into listening to donors fi rst instead of focusing on the people in need. There are so many grant-related regulations and administrative tasks that can distract aid workers from the real purpose of helping people in crisis situations. Gifts from private donors—people like you—make it possible for us to spend more time working directly with people in need.

Q: Can you give us an example of Medair’s people-focused aid?

Medair begins all of our projects by building relationships and engaging with communities. On a recent trip to Iraq, I met with Khalil, the leader of a village outside of Mosul. He told me how the Medair team had involved the community in designing a suitable response for their needs.

“We were in need of everything,” said Khalil. "You listened to our concerns and you came to help.

There was no one else here to help. You even drove house to house delivering water tanks.” Khalil was grateful that our first step was to listen and then to follow up with action. He appreciated Medair not only for what we had done but for how we had done it. That’s people-focused aid.

Bringing light to a dark place by George Mghames, Medair relief worker

Despite it all, the Syrian refugees I meet are often full of strength, hope, and dignity. Ahmad, 43, is one of those people who brings light to a dark place.

I met him on a sunny day during a visit with the shelter team to the north of the Bekaa Valley.

As soon as we arrived at the settlement, Ahmad and his mother, Jihane, welcomed us with big smiles on their faces. “It’s great seeing you again. Welcome!” said Ahmad.

Thanks to people like you who support Medair with financial gifts, Omar and his parents received concrete ramps and handrails to improve their path to the outdoor latrine, a mattress for better sleep, and a commode chair.

“My dream is to go back to our homeland one day,” said Ahmad. “It’s a natural feeling for any human being. People like you keep our hopes alive and make our lives easier as refugees. You can’t imagine how thankful we are.” © Medair/ George Mghames

Ahmad invited us for coffee. He and his family came to Lebanon six years ago from Aleppo. “I never expected that anything like this would ever happen to Syria,” said Ahmad. “It used to be really safe and beautiful, and it breaks my heart every time I think about it.”

In Lebanon, Medair provides customised shelter solutions for people who are unable to address their own shelter needs due to physical or visual impairments.

We are helping Ahmad's ageing parents, Jihane and Tarek, and his brother, Omar, who has paralysis Ali, Medair relief worker, on one side of speaks with Omar. his body. Omar walks on his knees and has limited use of his hands.

“In Syria, our land surface was flat and easy,” said Ahmad. “Here it’s all hills and not so smooth, so Omar has had problems reaching the toilet or just going outside.”

SOUTH SUDAN

UPLIFTING A COMMUNITY In 2015, Medair began running Care Groups (CGs) in Renk, South Sudan.

These groups of 10–15 volunteer community-based educators meet regularly for training, supervision, and support. The volunteers, called Lead Mothers, teach their neighbours about health, nutrition, and hygiene.

Although the temperature would soon rush to 40°C (104°F), the morning started cold. Mary joined with several others on the emergency response team (ERT) in prepping the vaccination kits for a long day of work in Ayod County, South Sudan.

Today there are 77 CGs operating in Renk with 896 Lead Mothers! Thanks to the teachings of these women, deliveries with a skilled birth attendant and latrine use have risen sharply in their communities.

Measles vaccination campaign in Ayod County.

Ayod County is desperately remote and deeply affected

by South Sudan’s malnutrition crisis, which makes people particularly vulnerable to diseases such as measles. When a measles outbreak was reported in nearby Panyijar County, our ERT launched an emergency vaccination campaign. “We want to prevent an outbreak in this community,” said Mary.

The logistics required to operate a successful vaccination campaign are difficult in a hot and isolated area like Ayod County. There is no electricity. The measles vaccine has to be kept cold at all times. The ERT had to fly ice packs from Juba to the airstrip every few days to ensure that the cold chain was maintained.

The health team recruited and trained 10 vaccination teams to walk to remote villages and reach as many children as possible.

Yet in less than three weeks, over 6,500 children were vaccinated against measles.

We reached 96% of the children in the area! In just the first six months of 2018, the ERT vaccinated 70,273 children for measles across four counties, and your support made it possible.

We are just housewives and mothers here. We’ve never been to school because of the war. When Medair gave me training, I realised that I had a real value to my household.

Oh, how much I miss home!

Mhanna and Athab fled the violence in Syria in the first days of the Syria crisis. That crisis has now stretched over seven years...

They were married in Syria not long before the crisis began.

A month after their wedding, doctors discovered that Athab had ovarian cysts and needed surgery as soon as possible. After having the surgery, Athab fled to Jordan with Mhanna, but soon became ill. "I took her to many doctors but no one was willing to help us,” says Mhanna. “She suffered for four months—until Medair came and helped us.”

“Athab’s medical situation required urgent hospital care,” says Dr Mohammad, Medair’s Senior Health Officer.

“If she hadn’t had the right care she would not be sitting here with us today.”

Athab’s hospital bill was paid by Medair's cash-for-health programme, which provides financial assistance to families who need urgent health care but cannot afford it. They are so grateful for the help.

Athab and Mhanna believe nothing is left for them in Syria, yet the memories are always in their hearts. “Oh, how much I miss home!" says Mhanna.

Facing my fears One afternoon in 2014, I went to the shop to buy groceries. While I was there, planes fi red missiles and everyone lay down on the floor. When I stood up, hundreds of dead bodies were lying in front of me, and everyone was screaming and crying.

My life changed that day. I was traumatised by that massacre. I could not remove the scene from my head. I became an aggressive person, yelling at my children all the time. I decided to flee Syria and come to Jordan with my five children, leaving behind the only country I had ever known.

Medair was the first organisation to knock on our door and offer to help. I had no idea that there were programmes to help traumatised people like me. I soon started going to their psychosocial group sessions.

I used to be terrified whenever I saw or heard planes overhead. The sessions have made me stronger. I was able to open my heart in front of a lot of women, and

I felt safe and secure. I thought nothing could help me face my fears, but Duha, the Medair health officer, supported me every single time. All the people around me, especially my husband, have been amazed at the transformation that happened in me. Medair has given me a chance to be a different woman.

Medair runs psychosocial support sessions for Syrian refugees, bringing groups of 12–15 people together to share their experiences, address their traumas, and learn strategies to cope with life as refugees.

Why work for Medair?

Q: What have been some of the hardest parts?

The most difficult periods have been when projects had to be suspended or closed because we were no longer safe. It is such a heavy burden to be a part of the decision to stop providing assistance because it is no longer safe to run programmes.

Q: What are some tips you have for new aid workers?

Don’t be intimidated! Medair staff are ordinary, flawed, passionate individuals who learned from the teams they worked with. I first committed to a year with Medair to learn the job and see if it was for me. Now I cannot imagine doing anything else. My education and professional experience helped me to adapt to the professional aid worker standards.

But it is Medair’s values that have kept me here.

Q: What are some highlights of your work with Medair through the years?

In Afghanistan and DR Congo, we worked in areas that no one else thought possible to Alan Service (Afghanistan, 2011) reach. I travelled in all four seasons on horseback in the mountains of Afghanistan to meet with people and allow them to talk directly to senior staff. I spent weeks moving through the jungle of DR Congo to build the trust of local communities and rebel groups so they would allow us access. People welcomed me and prepared a feast from the little they had to celebrate the fact that they were not forgotten by the outside world. Christians, Muslims, and animists have all told me about the hope they felt because of the efforts Medair made to reach them and provide aid.

I like that Medair gives me the possibility to come to people in need so I can show them that someone cares.

In the Rohingya refugee camps Gaby Service in Bangladesh, (Bangladesh, 2017) most people have lost everything—not only their belongings but also their families.

Every family is grieving. The trauma is still so close, but it seems like they have to move on. My wish is that Medair can make people feel valued while providing the most essential things they need to survive.

Alan and Gaby Service are two of Medair’s longest-serving relief workers. Since 2002, they have been helping people in need in South Sudan, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, Chad, DR Congo, Myanmar, and most recently in Bangladesh.

Why give to Medair?

Heidi and her two daughters, Mylie and Malia, support people in need with Medair.

by Heidi Malden In August 2017, I participated in a service trip to Jordan with my company, Qlik Technologies, to assist with Syrian refugees. It was there I learned about the great work being done by Medair.

I saw first-hand the despair refugees face when forced to leave their homes due to civil war or natural disasters. If I were in the same circumstances, I’m not sure I would feel any differently than the people I saw in Jordan. I could only hope to find an organisation like Medair to help me if ever I were in need.

I witnessed how Medair provides hope to those faced with a hopeless situation, and how they provide assistance with respect and dignity. The eyes of refugees would light up when they saw the Medair relief workers.

The trip to Jordan taught me more about the world than my entire educational experience combined.

Medair offered me an opportunity to see life through another person’s eyes. My goal is to end my life a better person than I entered it, and Medair gives me an opportunity to become a better person.

Heidi raised £3,600.00 on behalf of Medair for her service trip to Jordan. Meanwhile, her daughter Malia selected Medair as her service organisation to study, support, and sponsor for a grade school project.

She was able to raise £552.00. A very impressive family achievement!

Your gifts matter!

Mariam gave birth to her twins prematurely and the tiny babies needed extra care. Yet the hospital bill soon became more expensive than she or her family could afford.

Azeez, her husband, borrowed money from a Jordanian neighbour but they had no way to repay the loan. Until Medair knocked on the door.

“Thanks to Medair’s cash support, we were able to pay the hospital bill and give the money back to our neighbour,” said Azeez. “Without that financial support, we would have been in trouble now.”

This year has indeed been a very busy one for the UK team, we’ve had some highs and lows, we exhibited at several Christian festivals / conferences, and university careers fair, had our first fundraising dinner and had changes / additions within our team. In the midst of our high activity, we are thankful for God’s grace and for your support throughout the year.

A rich harvest in Afghanistan

Medair has reached a major milestone in a remote and neglected region of Nepal. With your support, we have now helped 1,000 families to rebuild their devastated homes.

With your support, in Afghanistan’s remote Central Highlands, Medair provided seeds and training to 1,850 women on how to grow kitchen gardens.

Our unique project connects groups of families together to work on building one another's homes, giving everyone a sense of ownership and reward.

“In the winter, families used to only have bread with tea or potato soup; now they also have vegetables, giving them much more food variety,” said Omar, Medair relief worker.

Our team works closely alongside people to provide them enough training, technical assistance, and financial support to build an earthquake-resilient home. In fact, a recent government evaluation recognised Medair’s method as the model way to provide housing reconstruction in Nepal!

Medair works across the Central Highlands, training and empowering women. “Before, people laughed that women had started working the land. I was not used to holding a shovel!” said Delara. “Now everyone in our community is doing it. Women are proud that they can do this.”


