Relocating to Dubai? Why networking before you move makes sense

Phil Bedford

Are you planning to make your mark in the bustling metropolis of Dubai? Before you start dreaming of palm trees and luxury cars, let’s talk about building your network, both professionally and socially, even before you set foot in this dynamic city.

They say, “Build the roof before it rains,” and it couldn’t be truer in the world of business and expat life. One invaluable way to lay a strong foundation in Dubai is by joining a networking group, even before you make your big move. Allow me, to guide you through the incredible advantages of taking this strategic step.

WHY JOIN A NETWORKING GROUP BEFORE ARRIVING IN DUBAI?

Dubai is a city of opportunity, but it can also be a maze if you don’t know your way around. Joining a networking group can be your compass, map, and tour guide, all rolled into one.

My own networking group, Strategic Business Connect schedules Zoom networking opportunities up to five times week. That allows people to begin networking from their home country. Then when people arrive, we have physical face-to-face sessions to make those all-important human connections.

HERE’S WHY YOU SHOULD NETWORK IN ADVANCE

1. Get Ahead of the Game

When you join a networking group in advance, you’re effectively hitting the ground running. You’ll be miles ahead of those who arrive without a clue, helping you secure those golden opportunities that Dubai is famous for.

2. Find Suppliers and Partners

Need a reliable supplier for your business? Want to partner with a local expert? Networking groups are treasure troves of connections. By getting to know potential suppliers and partners before you arrive, you can ensure a smooth transition for your business.

3. Tap into Local Expertise

Dubai’s business landscape can be complex, especially for newcomers. A good networking group offers access to experienced professionals who can provide invaluable insights and guidance. Think of it as a cheat code for success in Dubai’s competitive market.

4. Navigate Lifestyle Challenges

Moving to a new city, let alone a new country, can be a daunting experience. Networking groups aren’t just about business; they’re about building a support system. You can seek advice on schools, housing, healthcare, and more, making your life transition smoother than a luxury car gliding down Sheikh Zayed Road.

5. Make Friends and Socialize

Life in Dubai is about more than just work; it’s about building a vibrant, diverse social life too. Joining a networking group before your move can help you make friends and establish connections in advance. When you finally arrive, you won’t just have a business network; you’ll have a social one too.

6. Your Competition is probably already here

Let’s face it very few businesses have no competition. Dubai is a networking city and the chances that someone has been here longer, has more influence and has more advertising spend are high.

You probably don’t have 20 years to build your network so why not plug into a network where many of the people have been here between 15 to 30 years. This will fast track anyone’s access to the market.

THE TAKEAWAY

In a city as fast-paced and exciting as Dubai, it pays to be prepared. Joining a networking group long before you make the leap to Dubai is like having a parachute in case of a sudden business freefall, or a safety net for those inevitable lifestyle challenges.

There are many different networking groups out there and while we are proud of what we have developed, we encourage you to find a network that serves the purpose for you.

We always advise our clients to be in more than one network. Three is ideal because there will be varied spheres of influence and they may serve a different purpose. Which ever networks you are in, make sure you work them and contribute. Networking is about helping so that you in turn receive.

So, as you prepare to embark on your Dubai journey, remember the wise words, “Build the roof before it rains. ” Join a networking group or two (or three...), and you’ll not only have a roof but a whole community waiting to welcome you to the land of endless possibilities. Dubai is your oyster; now go crack it open.
