Geothermal History

Public Transport

The Great Lake is the size of Singapore

Lake Taupō sits in the caldera of a volcano which began erupting 300,000 years ago. The caldera formed from a collapse during the Oruanui eruption approximately 27,000 years ago, remarked as the most violent eruption in history, generating 430km3 of ash and deposit covering much of the Central North Island.

It's average depth is 110m, it's deepest point is 186m It is 46km long and 33km wide The shoreline is 193km long It has an area of 616km2 The lake's volume is 59km3

The eruption responsible for the shape of the modern caldera occurred around 180AD (The Hatepe or Taupō Eruption). It was recorded that ash from the eruption has been found in Greenland and Antarctica, and at the time of the eruption, Ancient Romans and Chinese experienced dark red skies. You can still experience this geothermal history today – visit one of the many geothermal areas in the region, naturally heated hot pools, or dip your toes in hotspots scattered around the lake, just look for the steam!

Completed in 1980 and taking shape over four years, marae-taught carver Matahi Brightwell created the work of art with a team of four artists, Jono Randell, Te Miringa Hohaia, Dave Hegglun and Steve Myhre. The spectacular carving takes the face of Matahi’s ancestor, Ngātoroirangi, each part of the artwork having its own story and meaning.

The carvings can only be seen from the water. View them yourself on a scenic cruise across the lake or make it an adventure with a kayaking tour.

One of New Zealand’s most extraordinary artworks, the Māori Rock Carvings tower 14 metres above the water at Mine Bay, being one of Taupō’s biggest tourist attractions.

A long history of healing

Take a tour through the silica terraces, geothermal areas and Māori cultural features in the Wairakei Terraces Walkway. Marvel at the intricate Māori carvings, geysers blasting water from depths of 1.5km and vivid blue pools carrying the silica forming the platforms. A century ago, the bubbling and steaming lands of Waiora Valley was a major visitor attraction to the Taupō area. Travellers worldwide came by train, horse or stagecoach, to soak in the therapeutic pools and streams, marvel at the boiling earth or wander amid the array of coloured silicas and bright green ferns and mosses. This previously forbidden land of terraces, geysers, springs and mud holes, with its growth of varied vegetation, rich beauty of ferns, vivid green carpet of rare and beautiful mosses and luxuriant trees, were described to the outside world as a natural phenomenon unlikely to be found anywhere else. The waters of the Te Kiri o Hinekai Stream were highly valued for its therapeutic and smoothing effects on the skin. After having bathed in these waters, people would testify to feeling physically and spiritually cleansed and invigorated. Silica-enriched water flows away from the geyser into blue pools then cascades over the terraces, depositing large amounts of silica to form amazing terraces reminiscent of the original pink and white versions of Tarawera which were once touted as the true eighth wonder of the world.

The Central Plateau mountains; Mt Ruapehu, Mt Tongariro and Mt Ngauruhoe, are the most dominant and breath-taking features of the North Island. The peaks were gifted in 1887 to the New Zealand people by the local Maori tribe, Ngati Tuwharetoa, and they sit within the oldest national park in 54

New Zealand, Tongariro National Park. It is the fourth national park established in the world and it is one of the few dual-listed World Heritage Sites – recognised for both its natural and cultural significance. The Volcanic Loop Highway surrounds this stunning scenic area and is the best route to access everything in the Central Plateau. You simply must experience Mt Ruapehu on your loop adventure, home to Whakapapa and Turoa ski fields - the largest and most developed ski area in New Zealand, and while you’re here, take on the renowned Tongariro Alpine Crossing.

Forgotten World Highway

Whanganui River

A 150km driving journey, the Forgotten World Highway is a remote, mysterious path built on colonial bridle paths formed in the late 19th century. Experience a natural roller coaster experience over four mountain saddles, through an eerie one-lane tunnel and along a sinuous river gorge.

The main gateway for people visiting the Whanganui National Park, this river attracts many cyclists, hikers, canoeists and day trippers to its fast and slow running waters, crystal clear waterfalls, deep gorges, fern clad banks, wide river banks and extensive wilderness areas.

Desert Road

Tongariro National Park

This barren-like road through the Rangipo Desert is just east of the three mountains. Mostly tussock and snow grasses, the area resembles a desert due to poor soil quality, drying winds and the mass sterilisation of seeds during a series of violent eruptions.

Encompassing Mt Tongariro, Mt Ruapehu and Mt Ngauruhoe, Tongariro National Park offers an environment of stunning diversity with emerald lakes, alpine meadows and hot springs around the largest volcanoes in the North Island.

The Tongariro Alpine Crossing, named as New Zealand’s best one-day hike, links Mt Ruapehu, Mt Tongariro and Mt Ngauruhoe by a scenic, tussock-covered countryside, and crossed by some superb walking tracks. Sitting in a Dual World Heritage Site, the Tongariro National Park, it has a strong cultural history and outstanding volcanic features. Cold mountain springs, herb fields, lava flows, active craters, steam vents, and emerald coloured alpine lakes are just some of what you can experience with spectacular views. It’s the dramatic scenery and unique land forms that make the Crossing a world-renowned trek. Be aware the climbs can be steep and unpredictable. The journey is a challenge and should not be taken lightly. In the winter, you’ll need an experienced guide due to the extreme conditions. But it’s much safer in summer when the snow has melted and you can do it unguided. The Crossing is a 19.4km one-way trek, starts at Mangatepopo Car Park and finishes at Ketetahi Car Park. You will need to engage in a local shuttle service. The walk takes approximately 6-8 hours, so be sure to wear the right clothing, suitable footwear and take plenty of water.
