ABOUT THIS BOOKLET Globalization made the workplace environment in Ireland multicultural. We believe we can make better inclusion of professional immigrants. In this booklet, you can find tips about how to promote social justice in the workplace.

Did you know, one in every six people in Ireland comes from a foreign background? Nowadays multiculturalism is present in the Irish context.

Thinking about the new social interactions of Irish people and immigrants in the workplace, a guide that includes empathetic techniques, was carefully designed to make everyone's day better in the work environment.

Remember social justice is good for everyone and employers with internationalized staff are more likely to succeed.

Did you know that miscommunication in the multicultural workplace can occur and sometimes it happens often?

In fact, misunderstandings while communicating happen even with people who share the same mother tongue.

Imagine a situation with people who have been raised with different languages?

In a multi-lingual workplace, it is fundamental to apply small strategies in order to support and develop a healthy and inclusive work environment and ensure that everyone has been listened to and understood.

Empathy is required, especially for communities receiving someone from a new culture.

Dealing with multiculturalism can be challenging, however, it can bring rich interactions.

Considering the world is globalized why do not learn more about new cultures?

This guide's intention is to promote solutions and help employers, coworkers, and governments to implement inclusive workplaces' cultures. Societies are encouraged to improve social justice and diversity. It helps to prevent an unequal work environment and drives to profitable innovation.

WHY DO I TALK ABOUT IMMIGRANTS AND LABOR MARKET IN IRELAND? I am proud of my foreign background and delighted for being part of the workforce in the Irish labour market.

Hi my name is Carol Caputo and I have been an immigrant in Ireland since 2016.

I had the chance to work and grow professionally in the country.

When I moved to Ireland back in 2016 I was recently graduated and I had worked in my field in my home country for about 3 years.

The beginning of my journey in Ireland was extremely exciting and challenging at the same time.

I had to do a career change, and I was an opportunity in the start-up sector as a graphic designer. I had to re-invent myself.

I dedicated my time to not only learning the language but also how to become a graphic designer.

Luckily I came across the government program called SPRINGBOARD. Which allows nationals and nonnationals to access the best universities in the country for free or for a very affordable fee.

My goal is to support the immigrant community in Ireland to have opportunities to grow and pursue a career in the country.

Being part of the program Design for Change as a Master's student has provided me with the focus and the skills necessary to set up my new personal project.

Through IADT Ma. program I have developed a guide that will support the community to deal and grow with the new multicultural Irish context and promote social justice.

My project will continue and expand with the non-profit goingfar.

I expect the immigrant community in the country to increase in visibility and achieve leadership positions, especially women and nonbinary people.

IN PARTNERSHIP WITH: GOINGFAR Our mission is to Celebrate Diversity and social justice by Supporting professional immigrants and companies to create a fair workplace environment.

GoingFar is a non-profit created to support migrant professionals in Ireland, to achieve their career goals, with a focus on women and nonbinary people. The organisation supports this group via workshops, talks, and a mentorship programme.

It offers supports so that migrant professionals can secure a job in their area of expertise, advance their careers, and/or start their own business. The vision for GoingFar is to be a one-stop shop for all migrant professionals in Ireland. In order to achieve this, they want to understand the main barriers and challenges faced by the migrant community in Ireland and which resources and services should be offered to address these. It is expected that an online platform should be put in place to bring together information and resources for this group, so it can all be found in just one place.

The organisation also plans to use this platform to allow members to access exclusive content and perks (such as LinkedIn Premium licences), as well as interact with other professionals and build a support network. The platform could also be used to facilitate some of the other services provided by the organisation, such as the mentorship programme.

The non-profit's vision is to accelerate the development of diverse migrant professionals in Ireland, by giving them the tools to find employment, advance their careers or set up their own businesses.

Goingfar provides access to information, support networks, technologies, and other resources in order to have the same opportunities as native professionals.

Carol Caputo CRITICAL THINKER & SOCIAL ACTIVIST Carol Caputo was born and raised in Brazil, she came from a family mixed with Native South American and Italian European background. I am currently a Design for Change MSc student at IADT (Ireland), as I believe we can create a more equal world through social design strategies. My research is focused on how to use Social Design and innovation to support immigrant women entering the Irish job market.

Helena Padueli IMMIGRANT ARTIST Helena Machado is a Brazilian born artist, currently living in Boston, Massachusetts. She attended the Fine Arts program at Bunker Hill Community College where she discovered a passion for the artistic expression as a form of healing. Helena Machado’s body of work is mostly a representation of personal childhood memories.
