Rewards made simple Paxton introduces new

Installer Rewards

Paxton has launched their brand-new installer loyalty programme, Paxton Rewards. The new programme rewards Paxton installers for participation in product training, buying, and installing Paxton security solutions.

Paxton Rewards is now live in the Paxton Installer app. Download the app for free from the Apple App Store or on Android Google Play.

Programme

Gareth O’Hara, Paxton’s Chief Sales Officer, says: “Three years ago, we launched the Paxton Installer app and, so far, it’s been downloaded by over 25,000 users. This essentially addressed the first phase of the development of the programme in validating that the app was deemed useful. We now have the right vehicle to deliver what will be seen as a simple-to-use, loyalty rewards programme that matches

our customers’ expectations of us offering the most up to date, smart access control solutions.”

Simple to Collect Points

The Paxton Rewards programme provides installers with a range of benefits and an opportunity to build strong partner relationships with the technology manufacturer. From Paxton Partner to Platinum Partner status, installers will unlock more

benefits with every tier, helping them to build and promote their businesses.

Earning points is straightforward, installers can scan any Paxton products with a silver barcode, attend training, or submit case study suggestions.

Gareth says: “We are huge believers in education and the provision of free training, so when people come to training, they will get points. Also, if they do a fantastic installation that they want to promote via a case study, they will get points by submitting it to us.

“So, the programme is not just about purchasing Paxton products, it is also about development through training and education, putting yourself in the shop window with case studies and being a true partner with us.”

Enjoy the Benefits

Installers can enjoy different benefits with the Paxton Rewards programme, including Paxton products, partner badges to show their expertise, and elevated listings on Paxton’s website. Paxton branded merchandise and Amazon vouchers are also available for installers to redeem in the Paxton Rewards store, providing options to spend points on what suits their specific needs.

Gareth says: “For the first time, installers can exchange points for Paxton products. This can add value to their customers and create a commercial advantage. We are keen to work closely with our installers and not only reward them with a programme for the products they buy, but also help them to develop new business by leveraging the Paxton brand themselves.”

Joining the programme does not only give installers rewards, but they will also have a chance to further experience the advantages of the recently updated Paxton Installer app.

Steve Rowlands, Divisional Director of Product Management at Paxton, explains: “Installers can access many useful resources via the app, including literature, product manuals, and installation tutorial videos.

“And what’s more, the content is stored in the app locally after being viewed. This is useful when installers are on site with no Wi-Fi, as they can still view the materials to get the instructions they need.”

Switching From Paxton’s Registered Installer Scheme Installers that are part of the Paxton

IN SECURITY | April 2023 | 5

Registered Installer Scheme are automatically enrolled in the rewards programme without worrying about losing their points.

Steve said: “The current Registered Installer accounts will be upgraded, and their points will be transferred to the new programme. Installers will keep their existing status or move up a tier as Paxton

Rewards has different points values for scanning products.”

Advanced IT Services are the first installers to submit a case study through the new Paxton Rewards programme. He shared a 30 door Paxton10 installation at St Lawrence Academy in Scunthorpe.

Installers can collect bonus points for submitting a case study

suggestion, and if their case study gets published on the Paxton website.

Speaking about the new programme, Ashley Woodward, Project Manager from Advanced IT Services, said: “We are finding the Paxton Installer app and the rewards programme good. Submitting case study suggestions not only gives us points for rewards, but also helps promote our brand and the work that we do via Paxton’s channels.”

Ashley also likes the programme’s product scanning function: “The barcode scanning makes collecting points and redeeming rewards easier. One thing we would like to see the programme grow is to be able to manage our account from a web browser, but overall we are liking it!”

With over 30 years of experience, Paxton design and manufacture market-leading security solutions for a range of buildings. Around 30,000 buildings each year are secured globally with Paxton products. Paxton’s global Head Office is based in Brighton, and have colleagues in 12 countries and export to over 60 countries worldwide.

Visit Paxton’s website to find out more about their new rewards programme. Installers are welcome to sign up for Paxton’s free training to further learn about their systems and products and to earn bonus rewards points.

HID and iPassport to bring new identity verification solution to transportation sector

AI-Powered Passenger Identity Verification Technology Enhances Travel Experience, Optimizes Airport Efficiencies

HID, a worldwide leader in trusted identity and physical security solutions, and iPassport, a provider of solutions that enable organizations to implement digital identity technologies, recently signed a memorandum of understanding to collaborate on a new identity verification solution for the transportation industry. This solution will make its debut at the Passenger Terminal EXPO 2023, March 14-16 at HID Booth #1244.

Navigating through the airport requires a sequence of touchpoints and processes—from check-in to baggage drop, security checkpoint, all the way to retail/duty-free shopping, lounge access and boarding. And with millions of travelers experiencing delays, cancellations, baggage mix-ups and the continued strain on airport staff, the passenger journey has become more complex than ever.

Airlines need reliable and swift identity verification to provide passengers with a secure, seamless journey that’s long overdue.

“Today, moving through an airport securely requires an ongoing and seamless identity verification system that not only enhances the passenger experience, but also optimizes efficiencies for everyone. HID is excited to collaborate with iPassport to bring this new solution to market,” says Vito Fabbrizio, Managing Director of Biometrics, Extended Access Technologies at HID.

With HID’s modular approach, airlines and airport operators are now able to add identity verification capabilities quickly and easily to existing systems without having to “rip-and-replace” or perform expensive migrations to a new platform altogether.

This modular solution includes the following

components:

• Facial Recognition Camera Hardware

• Fingerprint, ID Document & Ticket Readers

• Software Development Kits (SDKs)

• ID Proofing & Biometric Server

• Device Management

• Biometric Professional Services

• With HID-patented multispectral imaging (MSI) technology and ethically trained artificial intelligence (AI) built within the HID® U.ARE.U® Camera Identification System, significant performance and matching accuracy are achieved.

Use of facial recognition technology throughout the airport will depend on the passenger’s prior consent during booking or check-in. Additionally, the biometric information is only stored and used during the time the passenger is in transit within the airport to help address compliance with applicable with data privacy laws.

Beyond airlines and airports, other segments of the travel industry, such as cruise ships and hospitality, can also benefit from:

• Ethically trained and built AI to eliminate matching bias

• Industry-leading presentation attack detection (PAD) to thwart spoof attempts

• Superior performance amid challenging lighting

• Automatic face detection, capture and image quality checks—even when wearing masks

• On-device biometric processing with endpoint security for maximum protection

Ministry of Justice contract win for VMI Security and Twofold Security

Ministry of Justice contract win for VMI Security and Twofold Security

VMI Security, a specialist in security solutions, has won a four-year contract with the Ministry of Justice (MoJ) to install its cutting-edge security scanners in UK prisons.

Working with its UK partner, Twofold Security, the company is initially installing its X-Ray bag scanners across 44 prisons around the UK.

After winning a competitive contracting bid in which the equipment was rigorously analysed, VMI Security and Twofold Security, who are experts in inspection solutions, are now working with the MoJ to install the first scanners, largely at prison gates. The installation began in January, with completion of the first 83 scanners due before the end of March 2023.

The high-quality, sharp images of the scanners are aimed at thwarting illegal items such as drugs and mobile phones from getting beyond the prison gates.

VMI’s X-Ray inspection equipment can identify threats through artificial intelligence, integrated video monitoring of the inspection process, real-time selfdiagnosis, and being ONVIF approved, making it easy to integrate the device with the other assets registered in

the security system.

Karen James, Twofold Security’s sales and marketing director, said: “We know that when mobile phones get beyond the prison gates this can pose a significant threat to security – such as prisoners using phones to continue their criminal activities, facilitating drug trafficking, and threatening witnesses or victims, and of course when it comes to drugs inside prisons, this will cause significant harm to both inmates and the wider society.”

Jonas Climaco, VMI Security’s director for operation and sales for Europe explained: “For us it has been a real success to secure this extremely important contract with the MoJ. It really was a competitive process, which looked at the quality of our services, supply chain, socioenvironmental responsibility, and other aspects.

“We are proud to use our position and our high-tech equipment to really help the MoJ in its efforts to decrease all of these risks in a quest for a safer world both in prisons and outside.”

Macaw Security boosts efficiency with BigChange Mobile Tech

A Midlands-based security company, which protects high net worth individuals and commercial assets across the UK, has achieved a 40 percent increase in operational efficiency following the implementation of a BigChange job management system. Macaw Security Solutions can now optimise how its installation and maintenance engineers are deployed, with real-time tracking and intelligent scheduling, as well as reducing its reliance on paperwork. Engineers no longer have to physically check-in at the start and end of each working day, or as jobs are completed, and customer service levels are boosted with live updates and accurate ETAs.

“Our customers rely on us to be the eyes and ears for their safety and security requirements and we rely on BigChange.” commented Dominic Cattermole, Engineering Director at Macaw Security Solutions, “Using BigChange we have ‘eyes on’ every part of the field operation. We know where our engineers are, where they have been and where they are going next, and we have real-time visibility on works as they are being completed so we can report back to our clients.”

Macaw selected BigChange to replace its previous business management software which is widely used across the fire and security industry. “We had used our previous system for many years but it just wasn’t keeping pace with our requirements. Every time we wanted something new, there was a cost, and we had to look elsewhere for simple add-ons such as vehicle tracking,” Dominic continued. “It was like the world had moved on and they hadn’t noticed!

“Having looked at BigChange we didn’t look back and we didn’t look elsewhere,” he continued. “BigChange offered everything we needed, and more, in a single, easy to implement, easy to use system.”

Since implementing the BigChange job management system, which incorporates customer relationship management (CRM), job scheduling, live tracking, resource management, job finance and business

intelligence, Macaw has improved the efficiency of its installation and maintenance engineers by between 35 and 40 percent which equates to an additional capacity of around 4,000 jobs a year. Integrated vehicle tracking and intelligent job scheduling allows the right resource to be allocated to each job taking into account location, existing workload, skill set and available stock.

Customisable job cards and an online library of equipment specifications and location histories is further boosting efficiency as engineers can access site specific information, using their mobile phones, when they need it. They can also provide detailed updates, including geocoded date and time stamped photographs, for backoffice staff and management and for onward reporting to the client.

Macaw Security Solutions offers a comprehensive multi-layered security strategy for individuals, businesses, and public services across the UK. From initial site surveys and system design, Macaw can offer a range of solutions including intruder alarms, HD CCTV, access control, Rapid deployed CCTV and monitoring through to key-holding, first response teams, K9 units and police liaison, and are proud to protect national house builders, construction companies, critical infrastructure and individual home owners. Operating from its Birmingham headquarters, Macaw covers the whole of the UK and is accredited to the highest industry standards.

“BigChange supports and aligns with our vision to provide the highest standard of security by implementing effective solutions giving peace of mind via an individually tailored service,” Dominic concluded. “We know we have barely scratched the surface of what the system is capable of and we are looking forward to exploring additional functionality including the online booking portal and financial integration.”

For new headquarters in a Paris suburb, media giant Canal+ specified a connected smart building to enable efficient, flexible working. Choosing the right connectable access technologies can be a timeconsuming task, all too often requiring compromises in the name of compatibility.

“Fast-growing demand for integrated building systems makes it critical for hardware suppliers to offer a range of compatible access solutions,” says Thomas Schulz, Product Marketing Director at ASSA ABLOY Opening Solutions EMEIA.

“ASSA ABLOY’s broad competence and a vast range of connectable access control solutions enables us to match devices to many applications, at almost any opening and in all areas of a building.”

The new access control solution for the Canal+ building filters access to and through all technical areas, for 1,200 employees plus visitors and contractors. Nocompromise protection is required for multiple types of door, both internal openings and external or emergency exits.

“As soon as we discuss access systems, all service providers tell me about ASSA ABLOY products,” says Abdeljelil Saidi, Director of Safety and Security at Vivendi/Canal+ Group.

Seamless integration with Genetec Synergis

All ASSA ABLOY devices installed at Canal+ integrate seamlessly with their Genetec platform. This integration gives employees the flexibility and convenience of

carrying one multi-site credential. From an integrated Genetec control panel, administrators can issue, amend or withdraw access for individual users or rooms.

Aperio and ABLOY locks connect with the smart building system to prevent unauthorized intrusion into sensitive areas.

Canal+ are delighted with performance of their connected Genetec and ASSA ABLOY solution: “We plan to equip new Vivendi Group sites and not just the Canal+ headquarters,” adds M. Saidi.

The right device for every door, interior and exterior

To secure interior doors, the multi-award winning Aperio H100 Wireless Handle combines security with contemporary aesthetics. Its durable design is perfect for doors with high traffic; the H100 works with online or offline access control systems. A battery slots inside the handle, ensuring a minimal, discreet footprint.

For an even higher level of security at externalfacing doors, ABLOY Electromechanical Locks are also fully integrated with the building’s Genetec system. These class-leading door devices offer high mechanical resistance at vulnerable points such as emergency exits.

“Abloy electromechanical locks are robust and efficient,” confirms M. Saidi.

Genetec recognises data privacy day by sharing physical security best practices

In recognition of international Data Privacy Day, Genetec Inc. (“Genetec”), a leading technology provider of unified security, public safety, operations, and business intelligence solutions, shared data protection best practices to help physical security leaders protect privacy, safeguard data, and enable trust without compromising security.

Data privacy has become a global top priority. Today, 71% of countries have initiated data privacy legislation, and companies that haven’t taken appropriate steps to protect data are facing tens of millions of dollars in fines for violations. In the physical security industry, acquiring digital information such as surveillance footage, photos, and license plate information is necessary to help protect people and assets and provide a valuable source of actionable business intelligence.

“Security and privacy are not mutually exclusive,” said Christian Morin, Chief Security Officer at Genetec Inc. “By following best practices and ensuring privacy is designed into their physical security solutions, organisations can have the highest levels of security while respecting personal privacy and complying to privacy laws.”

Best practices for ensuring video surveillance, access control and automatic license plate recognition systems meet data privacy standards include:

Collect and store only the data the organisation truly needs. Reduce your exposure to risk in the event of a data breach with simple steps. Consider adjusting a camera’s field of view so it doesn’t record areas that do not require monitoring. Set protocols to automatically archive or delete physical security data based on relevance. And carefully control what data, how much and for how long it can be shared with other organisations.

Limit access to sensitive data. Grant access to data only to those who need it to do their jobs and monitor those activities to ensure identifying information, like images and access events, is used only as intended.

Review access rights regularly so privileges align with user requirements. Using an identity provider, like Microsoft Active Directory, can also help eliminate human error by automating the processes of adding/ removing security user accounts, granting rights, or removing users who have left the organisation.

Anonymise data collection automatically. New technologies can automatically restrict and protect access to personal data. Consider deploying privacy masking like Genetec KiwiVision™ Privacy Protector that automatically anonymizes images of people, so you can continue to survey surveillance footage while respecting privacy. This technology also offers an additional layer of security that ensures only authorised users can “unlock” and view unmasked footage while maintaining an audit trail.

Unify your security solutions. When video surveillance, access control, evidence management, and other sensors operate under one platform, it becomes much easier to access and manage all your data and create reports for a variety of systems and sensors from a single interface. A unified system simplifies the process of tracking system and device health and streamlines software and firmware updates which is key to mitigating the threat of data breaches.

Work with certified partners. Make sure your system providers are properly certified (ISO 27001, 27017 standards, UL 2900-2-3 level 3 cybersecurity certification, and SOC2 compliance), and that they develop all their technology based on principles of privacy. A cyber resilient physical security system will contribute to keeping the data collected from IoT devices and sensors across the physical security network private.

Barriers bolsters Melbourne defences after terror attack

More than 2,000 innovative Safetyflex anti-terrorist bollards have now been installed in the heart of Melbourne, Australia, as part of a local government scheme launched in response to a fatal vehicle attack.

Coventry-based Safetyflex Barriers has installed its spring steel bollard system across the Melbourne Central Business District (CBD) with the help of its Australian distributer Ezi Security Systems.

The city was rocked by a vehicle attack in January 2017 when a car was deliberately driven into pedestrians along Bourke Street, killing six people and leaving 27 seriously injured.

In the aftermath, a AUS$52.5 million security upgrade at Melbourne’s busiest and most prominent pedestrian sites was commissioned by The City of Melbourne, with hostile vehicle mitigation predominantly featuring Safetyflex’s advanced spring steel bollards.

More than 2,000 of the slimline bollards have now been installed across key sites within the CBD, in addition to further sites in Australia, helping to keep high-risk crowded places safe from the threat of vehicle attacks.

Marcus Gerrard, director at Safetyflex Barriers, said: “Our patented anti-terrorist bollard system has been game-changing, providing unprecedented crash test certified performance in an attractive, slimline design. We are the only company in the world to use this type of technology in anti-terrorist bollards and crash rated

street furniture.

“The unique thing about our bollards is they only require shallow foundations around 200mm deep, which is key in helping cities such as Melbourne navigate around in-ground obstructions, whilst still providing high-level security systems.

“The installation of the 2,000th spring steel bollard is of great satisfaction and pride, and reflects our strong experience and expertise in securing busy cities and centres worldwide. Our bollards will help ensure the safety of residents and visitors to Melbourne and Australia for years to come.”

The spring steel technology means the bollards can be installed in fixed, removable or retractable versions, while the elegant stainless-streel shrouds are also fitted with reflective bands to provide night-time visibility.

The bollards have already proved their worth in stopping vehicle attacks, when in 2021 a stolen car fleeing police in Melbourne CBD was halted in its tracks by a Safetyflex bollard before the drivers could inflict any damage.

Pedestrians were able to retreat to the protection offered by the line of Safetyflex bollards, ensuring nobody was hurt.

Safetyflex has now become one of the biggest suppliers of anti-terrorist bollards in Australia, protecting high-profile locations in Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney from the threat of vehicle attacks.

Finding the balance

A closer look at aesthetic access control

Where access control is concerned, architects and design teams must find the right balance between aesthetics, functionality and security, says Daniel May of Consort Architectural Hardware.

Following a period of innovation and integration, access control has developed into an ever-prominent facet of building design over the past decade. Where systems were once rudimentary, modern user requirements have led to several operational and technological advancements, resulting in a versatile selection of options that move beyond the limited capabilities of centralised deployment architecture.

The push for smarter buildings has played its part too. In fact,

according to a 2022 report, the number of smart buildings worldwide is projected to climb from 45 million to 115 million by 2026, with global market size estimated to hit $201.16 billion by 2031 - and this growth shows no signs of slowing down (omitting another global pandemic).

In order to meet growing market demand, manufacturers continue to modernise access control solutions, introducing the use of mobile credentials, cloud control and even bio-metric systems. As such, the specification process for access control hardware continues to become more nuanced, and for architects in particular, there’s an increasing challenge to ensure all design objectives are met. With this in mind, how can professionals strike a balance between seamless integration and design?

Aesthetic choices

For many decision makers, access control is viewed as an efficient and flexible route to securing their building. But more than that, it has become critical to the operative performance of our built environment, where from residential settings to commercial space, the adopted use of interconnected systems is further boosting accessibility, functionality and security.

Take modern hotel environments for example. According to a 2022 report, 56% of hospitality consumers expressed locking and unlocking rooms using biometrics and facial recognition would enhance their experience. From Wi-Fi infrastructures to cloud services, technology has almost become synonymous with a hotel guest’s

22 | April 2023 | IN SECURITY
ACCESS CONTROL

experience and is designed to improve their stay. Where digital access control systems are adopted, guests can interact with the premises independently, streamlining their access to essential entry points while safeguarding rooms against unauthorised visitors. Similarly, hotel operators benefit from enhanced building security and increased traceability, not to mention improved business efficiency and higher guest ratings.

However, while security and accessibility are frequently top of the agenda when it comes to specifying hardware, from an architectural perspective, a solution’s aesthetic is just as valuable and plays a crucial role in the decision-making process. Often, door hardware can feel like the finishing touch to a design project, and so, careful consideration must go into consistent design choices that make a positive impact on the building’s aesthetic. Ultimately, better-quality aesthetics enhance environments by making them more welcoming.

Again, hospitality is a good case in point, where hotels must ensure their environment is visually pleasing as part of the service quality offered to their guests. However, a survey on urban design revealed 40% of architects find incorporating security measures into new developments without impacting aesthetic appeal a key design challenge. With this in mind, architects and design teams can be forgiven for past frustration towards the unattractive and cumbersome access control systems that were once in their infancy. In

reality, today’s systems offer a much more seamless design, and with end

users placing value on key elements such as accessibility, fire safety and reliability, it’s now possible to incorporate a solution that works for everyone.

Combining value and visuals

Upon recognising today’s access control systems promote functionality and seamless installation without compromising aesthetics, there’s a growing demand for comprehensive, single-package solutions across many contemporary projects. As a result, architects and designers are increasingly met with questions on door hardware and access control and must keep up to date with the latest solutions that are available.

IN SECURITY | April 2023 | 23

As such, the initial design stage provides an opportune period for architectural teams to consider the needs of the end user in relation to access control systems. From a building’s security elements to its flow of movement, there are various objectives to reflect upon, and architects must look to develop their knowledge on access control solutions to ensure all end user objectives are met, and all while considering the final aesthetic.

Naturally, projects can often benefit from greater collaboration and architectural professionals are urged to lean on the expertise of manufacturers where required. By working closely with trusted manufacturers early in the process, teams can incorporate the latest technology into buildings at the initial stages of design, as opposed to being

an addition later in the process.

In many cases, manufacturers now offer bespoke access control solutions too, each designed to adapt around the end user’s needs while working with the architect on a design level. Through greater collaboration and the use of tailored solutions, architects are given the ability to choose consistent finishes and materials that fit the planned aesthetic, removing the need to try and match across various suppliers later down the line.

Seemingly, access control will continue to play a larger role in building design as the industry progresses. And while the adoption of new technology may inherit an element of uncertainty for some, by introducing tailored solutions with seamless integration at early stages of the design process, architects can

rest assured that their proposals address core challenges such as security and fire safety, while keeping their aesthetic vision intact.

Sustainability in practice

The journey to Net Zero

Colin Donnelly, Health, Safety & Environmental Manager at ASSA ABLOY Opening Solutions, discusses the company’s journey towards Net Zero, and how organisations can implement more sustainable operations. Businesses

play a crucial role in the government’s goal of achieving Net Zero emissions by 2050, whether they are large multinational corporations or independent SMEs.

Around one in three of the UK’s largest businesses are leading the way in the world’s transition to a

low carbon economy, committing to align with UK government ambitions and eliminate their contribution to climate change by 2050 .

Many companies understand the issues around decarbonisation and recognise the need for the transition to Net Zero. However, there is a

30 | April 2023 | IN SECURITY
SUSTAINABILITY

significant gap in turning this general understanding of the issues into tangible plans and action.

For example, small businesses have struggled with how to implement sustainability into their operations. A survey found that although 99% of small firms recognise the importance of sustainability, three quarters of them (77%) don’t know how to measure their carbon emissions and need support.

The recent ‘Mission Zero’ independent review of Net Zero makes recommendations for transitioning to a thriving green economy, and suggests it could be a lucrative economic opportunity.

But hundreds of businesses consulted in the review made it clear that guidance and help is needed in areas such as skills, energy efficiency, support for SMEs, and providing a tax environment that stimulates investment.

Shifting focus

Instead of seeing the transition to Net Zero as an exercise which requires sacrifice, ASSA ABLOY Opening Solutions has used this

initiative as a driver to innovate and boost business while lowering operations costs.

What’s more, there is also a potential competitive advantage to be gained through pioneering Net Zero plans, although this can be challenging in cases where sustainability endeavours are not integrated with a corporate strategy.

We have increased our focus on sustainability in recent years, and subsequently were included in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index Europe in recognition of our progress and our ambitions.

This is due to our combination of focused initiatives and continuous improvements, as well as ensuring sustainability is closely aligned to, and is a positive enabler of our Group strategic objectives. Essentially, our business strategy is also our sustainability strategy.

As a Group, we align with the UN Sustainable Development Goals, which provide the global community with a roadmap for how to combat global challenges related to economic, social and environmental sustainability.

Our increased focus on

sustainable buildings is a growth driver and we invest in a sustainable product offering, with accompanying transparency and verification documentation.

Collaborative working is key, and ensuring the entire organisation buys into the concept of a more sustainable future – everyone from those in the factory, to office workers and senior management.

So, how are we implementing more sustainable operations at our production sites?

Implementing change

We have recently created a significant reduction in carbon emissions at our Lisburn site through a variety of methods, including advances in packaging, lighting and welfare facilities.

By introducing the new Eco pallet wrap, we have reduced packaging CO2 emissions by 56%, resulting in 115 fewer trees that need to be planted to offset CO2 per year. What’s more, the product offers a cost reduction of 39%.

We also implemented a lighting upgrade, removing existing lighting within both steel and timber door

IN SECURITY | April 2023 | 31

production areas, installing high efficiency 150-Watt LED lighting. These LED lights are made operational via motion sensors omitting the use of switches on walls.

Also included is a control system which enables the user to dim the brightness as required on individual lights, offering an annual reduction in energy consumption of 54,332 kWh.

One of our ageing compressors has been changed out with a replacement unit providing efficient new technology. With its new air

pump system the new compressor will improve efficiency within the factory by approximately 94,500 kWh annually and a subsequent reduction in air leaks due to this technological advancement.

A project was also identified to upgrade existing welfare facilities within the Lisburn site, to implement sensor technology within the sanitaryware to help reduce unnecessary water usage.

New touchless sensor water taps and cisterns were installed to replace

push taps and traditional push cistern technology, offering an annual water saving of 624m2.

There is still a long way to go, but by introducing these kinds of innovations at production sites we can implement more sustainable operations, and help propel our journey towards Net Zero.

The role of access control in modern connected living experiences

Introduction

What makes us feel at home? For some, it’s the people (or pets) who welcome you through the door of an evening. For others, it’s their chosen decorations and furnishings. Of course, all of those are important, but safety is an often overlooked element. Whether you live in a small flat in the downtown of a major city or in a cottage that resembles the epitome of rural living, having the right “safety system,” also described as a “security system,” is essential. As highlighted by The Happiness Index, the feeling of safety this provides immensely affects our brain and mood.

But how can we ensure that our space feels safe? And where does access control fit?

What is Access Control?

I quote “safety and security system” because how you define “safety security system” varies. Whether it is as simple as a door lock, a full-blown access control system, or even an intrusion system, camera system, or any combination, how you define it is up to you. Delivering safety is not only a science or an art, but safety is also a feeling. Specific to this article, access control is a variety of solutions that fall under the security umbrella. Access control, at its most basic level, refers to keeping bad people out and letting the right ones in. That value proposition is very well understood in the commercial market, but what about at home? The same values apply - you want easy access for you and other occupants while keeping anyone who poses a

risk out of your property. It is just less talked about.

Security Through Time

Throughout history, people have found ways to keep themselves safe at home. In ancient times, from Greece to Rome, the most prominent in society had security guards on their doorstep to keep intruders out. Skip ahead a few centuries, and breaking the Enigma Code, against the best efforts of those attempting to keep it secure, played a fundamental role in shaping the course of World War 2.

Nowadays, those seeking the newest security offerings turn to tech instead of security guards or code-breakers. Our solution-focused world has given us a new approach to ensuring our safety. Fresh from

34 | April 2023 | IN SECURITY
ACCESS CONTROL

perspectives gained during the COVID-19 pandemic, our offices are being transformed with the latest biometric technology - but what about where we live?

Security at Home

Historically, access control has been produced by companies that specialise in the security industry. As a result, big tech has been on the sidelines with modest integrations and more e-commerce desires. But in recent years, some of the world’s biggest brands have decided to get deeper into the industry. With Amazon and Google choosing to add connected locks and access control management features into their offering, there is an apparent hunger for improved security and clear recognition that there must be an opportunity large enough to garner their attention… But what makes a good access control solution for the home?

Customer Centricity

The most popular home security solutions prioritise the user and go beyond just the hardware design. For example, the ‘ADT Self Set-Up’ gives a clue away in its name. This DIY security system makes installation

easy for the user and integrates with Google Nest devices. The product was born from a partnership between Google and ADT, bolstered by a multi-million dollar investment. So it’s no surprise that the marketing USPs reflect the importance of user-friendliness.

It’s been recognised by big players in the industry, but why is this element so important? Convenience. The truth is that the easier a solution is to use, the more it will be embraced. Convenience appears in many ways, including ease of use and workflows. Think back to when access control in the home was made of one burglar alarm and a mechanic lock. What would you do if you forgot the code to turn the alarm off and were unsure how to reset it? You could go months without turning it on to avoid the hassle when you get home. By implementing access technology solutions that avoid such roadblocks, making them easy to use and integrated, occupants will be far more likely to make the most of their offering. Recognition of this has, and continues to, drive the access control industry to create systems that reflect the need for people to feel safe at home while delivering additional value.

Prioritising Mobile

We’ve heard time and time again that any industry wishing to thrive in the future should consider adopting mobile as a formidable technology, modality, and user interface. The security industry is no different. For example, Apple recently announced the ability to put keys in a phone’s Wallet. Many companies have also announced the ability to control your home’s smart lock from an app. In a world where working remotely and abroad is becoming increasingly popular and where the post-pandemic holiday boom saw a significant increase in individuals jetting off to sunnier climates, many people spend extended periods away from home. However, by being able to ‘check in’ through your smart lock or home security system app, it’s easier to feel relaxed about the safety of the place you’re going back to.

In the same way that soldiers no longer stand guard outside the homes of Roman Emperors, the way we live has evolved. We’re now less likely to have to protect ourselves against power-hungry citizens conspiring to steal the crown - but we still need security that suits our day-to-day, whether at home or

IN SECURITY | April 2023 | 35

abroad, specially installed where we eat and sleep. This is why mobile-first access control systems do so wellflexibility for an ever-changing world.

Smart Locks

Are you a landlord seeking to equip your tenants with a simple, nonintrusive access control solution? The above may appear too daunting to implement on a broader scale, especially in the homes of occupants you still need to meet. If this is the case, consider smart locks.

Over the last few decades, smart

locks have become an essential security feature in smart homes, apartments, and condominiums. Locks used to be hardware-centric, a mechanical feat, with a glimmer of thought towards software. Nowadays, forward-thinking corporations have flipped it and are creating locks based on software. The most popular of these presents a bridge between a mechanical lock’s security needs and a smart lock’s convenience needs. As an example, take electromechanical lock cylinders or e-cylinders. Most e-cylinders, for instance, iLOQs

S50 product line or similar brands, can be attached to anything from unit door locks to furniture locks, combining the old and new for easy installation. Smart locks that bring safety and state-of-the-art technology together, helping tenants to feel safe without the fuss, are the ideal choice for landlords seeking to retain and attract renters or homeowners.

Conclude

Want a smart house that feels like home? Invest in security solutions and start with access control products. It’s an underrated factor in our happiness; individuals deserve to feel safe in their houses. While choosing the right one can feel overwhelming, consider the following; is it a safety product? Is it user-friendly? Is it mobile? Does it suit my lifestyle? You can’t go wrong if the answer to all of these is yes.

If this article has left you confident about the world of access control (good!), but unsure where to find the best solution fit for you, now is the time to sign up for the Access Control Executive Brief - the industry’s only objective analysis of goings-on.

Introducing G4S Fire & Security Systems

Why the future of security is technology led

With today’s security consumers expecting a proactive, datadriven, intelligent and informed approach to security delivery, the role of technology in the modern security programme has become critical. The trend is reflected in market forecasts, with Mintel expecting the security equipment market to rise by 26% between 2021 and 2025 in their UK Security Equipment, Access Control and CCTV report published in 2021.

explains how identifying a security partner that can deliver across both technology and personnel provision provides far greater accountability and makes security more effective.

Integration is Key

Security works best when human expertise is considered alongside technology, allowing the strengths of both to work together in a holistic, integrated programme. When we employ technologies in this way, it not only improves security but also makes the operation more financially efficient and sustainable.

What does that mean in practice?

Here are a few examples.

CCTV platforms cover a far greater surface area than an officer performing a patrol and provide real time, 24/7 monitoring to a centralised control room. Analytics can alert to unusual activity or motion, which can then be used to direct the security officer on what and where to investigate. Without this intelligence, the chances of security being in the right place at the right time are significantly reduced.

Post pandemic, we see a far greater appetite to challenge security design with a view to controlling

38 | April 2023 | IN SECURITY
INTEGRATED SECURITY

risk and delivering financial savings. Technology has a critical role to play.

One of our clients, a property management company operating an industrial estate made up of over 100 tenant business units, recently realised the cost benefits available.

Theft, vandalism and trespassing were major problems at the site, leading to dissatisfaction and lack of confidence from tenants. There were regular incidents of fly-tipping, pallet theft, equipment theft and car dumping.

When G4S took a closer look at the existing security coverage, it was clear that the CCTV coverage was inadequate and the static security officers on site felt vulnerable and unsafe.

We gated the site with physical security measures and upgraded the entire CCTV system to improve coverage. The static guard and vehicle were replaced with 24/7 remote monitoring of the site, as well

as a regular site patrol and timed incident response service.

This approach improved security, while reducing costs by over £65k pa. In addition to cost savings, the client enjoyed huge sustainability benefits. Their carbon emissions dropped by approximately 8,308kgs per year and water use decreased by 63,000 litres.

With a total of 17 sites for this client, the estimated savings if this approach was implemented at all sites was estimated at £550,000 per year and the CO2e reduction at 28,949 kg per year, which is the equivalent to a car driving around the world, twice.

Introducing G4S Fire & Security Systems

Whilst most people know G4S for the provision of security officers, technology is far more developed in G4S than many realise.

G4S Fire and Security Systems is the technology arm of the business.

Employing over 150 engineers and supporting 3,500 sites across the UK, G4S Fire and Security Systems designs, installs and maintains a broad range of security systems to customers of all sizes, with a specialisation in high security environments such as critical national infrastructure.

Clients include universities and higher education, healthcare, data centres and stadia, as well as Europe’s largest construction project. We supply security systems to a number of critical infrastructure and high security projects which means that our existing and potential customers view us a trusted partner.

As an example of the size and scale of the technology capability, G4S Fire & Security Systems is currently delivering the largest value Security Systems Project ever awarded in its sector. The project covers 800 sites across the UK and includes 50,000 cameras, 25,000

IN SECURITY | April 2023 | 39

access control doors, 32,000 PA speakers, 250,000 intruder alarm points and 150,000 network points.

What’s significant is that not only does G4S Fire & Security Systems install the technology itself, but real time service is delivered by our SOC (Security Operations Centre) which monitors surveillance from all sites simultaneously and intervenes when necessary.

If the SOC is alerted to a threat such as a fire, intruder or lone worker request for support, staff will immediately react and deploy an appropriate physical security response working in close collaboration with the on-site security teams and G4S mobile incident response.

This centralised approach has allowed G4S and the client to consolidate the servicing of both the fire & life safety and security systems. This centralises accountability for system support and issue resolution and means that the same engineer can service both systems, reducing the amount of travel needed for site visits - offering a clear sustainability and cost-saving benefit.

Carefully Managed Partners

Rather than manufacturing the technology, G4S Fire and Security Systems is an “integrator”, leveraging multi-year relationships with trusted manufacturing partners such as Avigilon, Axis and Honeywell. We operate a rigorous vendor selection programme and then commit to accreditation programmes so our customers can be confident

that we have the necessary skills and support infrastructure to deliver on our promises.

We take quality seriously and recognise the confidence that product accreditations provide our customers. One example is G4S’ Access Control System Symmetry which has been listed in the National Protective Security Authority Catalogue of Security Equipment (CSE). This catalogue exists to help security practitioners identify appropriate physical security equipment.

Design, Manage and Maintain

Behind every system’s deployment is a well-established support process that exists to make sure each project is completed on time and within budget.

The process starts with design. For each project, the Design Team carefully evaluates the requirements and recommends a solution to suit the environment and budget. They look at a whole host of factors including power availability, network infrastructure, coverage and integration with existing systems.

Once the project is approved, it is handed over to the Project Management team, who oversee all aspects of implementation to make sure the project is successful. The team following a 3-stage process made up of:

• Preparation: where the team complete pre-installation surveys, produce detailed delivery, installation, commissioning, handover and user training plans.

• Execution: equipment

deliveries, ensuring the right site access clearances are in place, installation and testing, certification and handover completion.

• Optimisation; completion of user training, definition of preventative maintenance cycle and handover into customer care team.

Once the systems are live, the Customer Care Centre provides 24/7 support to quickly resolve any issues, as well as working closely with the UK-wide field-based engineering team. When a service issue does arise that cannot be resolved remotely, the team uses real time, location intelligence to identify the most suitable engineer with appropriate skills to attend site and complete the fix.

Given the critical nature of many of the sites that we secure, speed of response is key. We operate with some demanding response targets that we are proud to meet over 90% of the time.

In many instances, we go a step further and provide real time remote security services from our highly accredited, fully resilient Cat II NSI Gold Standard Security Operations Centre which provides round the clock support and delivers a whole suite of services, including remote surveillance, alarm monitoring, lone worker monitoring and intercoms.

This site manages over 750,000 security incidents annually, triaging false alarms, providing first level support and then dispatching a security team or blue light (emergency services) when necessary for more detailed investigation.

So, with the post pandemic environment pushing the shape and scale of the future of security, technology is here to stay, and G4S Fire and Security Systems is playing a crucial role.

With technology systems at the heart, G4S connected security programmes are reshaping the security of the future.

Security and mobility

How the Ajax security systems protect the works of world artists during the war

Art spaces with valuable exhibits are always a challenge for the security industry. Mobile constructions, architectural features, and a great number of visitors require flexible solutions for complex protection.

Module of temporality (MOT) — is a 417 m² exhibition space. It consists of 27 metal containers. There are paintings, sculptures, installations, and audiovisual works of 28 artists from 10 countries inside the containers. The exhibition is devoted

to the theme of russian aggression against Ukraine.

Unlike classical museums, MOT containers are situated right in the middle of the square in the center of Kyiv. The exhibition doors are open to the general public 7 days a week for three months. After that, the art space will be taken apart and then put back together in a new location.

Challenge

Protection of the exhibits and metal constructions with the possibility of relocation of the security system

Organizing a stable radio signal. All walls and slabs are made of metal. This material screens and weakens the radio signal. On top of that, the signal is additionally weakened by metal objects inside the space. Thus, to provide a powerful radio signal, it was necessary for engineers to calculate the exact number and optimal location of all detectors and range extenders at the site.

Providing mobility for relocation. MOT exhibition is planned to be presented in different countries. However, to relocate it, organizers

have to dismantle all constructions together with the security system. The location of containers may change, yet, despite all changes, the security system should provide a stable radio signal.

“The fundament of our project is an international exhibition for which many artists created and provided works devoted to the theme of temporality. Despite the fact that it is unusual for each of them to present their works in a country that is at war and where it is impossible to insure the works of art, they entrusted us with their precious paintings, installations, and sculptures. The Ajax security system has been trusted to protect them against damage, theft, or flooding, allowing the team of the project to monitor the space day and night and even remotely control the devices”. Team don’t Take Fake

Why Ajax Safety. Powerful radio signal under any circumstances using

Jeweller radio communication technology. If the distance between the containers increases, detectors will work stably using range extenders.

Mobility. In case of exhibition’s relocation and re-installation, the security system will keep the same settings and will not need a new configuration.

Comfort. Being able to control the security system from a smartphone

gives MOT team an opportunity to quickly activate or deactivate the system without turning to specialists.

Design. The room is equipped with LightSwitch devices, which are organically combined with the design of the art space.

Solution

62 detectors and range extenders to provide art space with mobility

control panel Hub 2 Plus. This model has an ability to support a far greater number of security devices and user groups.

The reception staff, office staff, and hall wardens use a wireless touch keypad KeyPad Plus to enter exhibition’s territory and office space. It is not necessary for staff to have an Ajax app, it is enough to know the code.

To increase the strength of a signal, 2 range extenders ReX 2 were installed on different floors of exhibition. Ajax’s engineers installed range extenders in a way that allows all 62 detectors to receive the same stable radio signal.

25 DoorProtect Plus detectors were used to protect windows and doors. The detectors were installed on windows and glass constructions.

Moreover, 12 CombiProtect detectors, which detect motion and glass break, were placed inside the premises.

If any of the detectors is triggered, the StreetSiren, which is attached to the outer part of one of the containers, activates. Organizers also use a third-party CCTV system that has been integrated into Ajax application.

20 smart LightSwitch switches, 2 two-gang, and 18 one-gang switches were used to adjust the light inside the premises. Organizers control the lighting through Ajax app and use automation scenarios for smart lighting.

Besides the exhibition area, there is an office, a reception, a boiler room, and a restroom in the MOT territory. Sanitary areas have been equipped with two LeaksProtect detectors for leak detection.
