Vera board members and staff gather inside the vast 4-million-gallon reservoir, which is empty in order to clean and prime it for a new coating.
The preparation sets the stage for enhanced protection. Employing state-of-the-art robotic technology with HEPA filtration to collect coating particles ensures that our water supply remains clean, healthy, and safe.
SECURING OUR WATER FUTURE: 4-million-gallon reservoir project update
Maintenance work is currently underway to revitalize our 50-year-old, 4-million-gallon reservoir located on Vera Crest Drive. This project is set to continue through August 2025, marking a milestone in our commitment to maintaining and improving our water infrastructure.
The sheer scale of our reservoir
To appreciate the magnitude of this project, let's put the size of our 4-million-gallon reservoir into perspective:
• It's equivalent to about six Olympic-sized swimming pools
• It could fill approximately 100,000 bathtubs
• The water it holds weighs a staggering 33,321,768 pounds — that's as heavy as 193 Boeing 737 airplanes!

4-million-gallon reservoir project update
Project details
The main focus of this project is to repaint both the interior and exterior surfaces of the reservoir. While this may sound simple, it's a complex process that will enhance the quality and reliability of our community's water supply for years to come.
Funding and fiscal responsibility
This project has been funded by a low-rate public works loan from the Washington State Public Works Board. This lets us make this investment in our infrastructure without an undue financial burden.
While low-interest financing helps to keep costs down, it's important to understand that investments in our water infrastructure are ultimately reflected in our rates. These improvements are essential for maintaining a safe, reliable water supply for our community now and in the future.
Looking ahead
We know a project of this scale may raise questions or concerns. We will keep you up to date along the way. We'll be posting regular updates on our website.
Combat cabin fever by doing a quick water leak check
When bad weather keeps you indoors, consider conducting a quick leak check around your house. This simple task helps conserve water and maintain your home.
Why leak checks matter:
Small leaks can waste thousands of gallons annually. According to the EPA, the average home’s leaks can total nearly 10,000 gallons of water wasted annually. That's the amount of water needed to wash 300 loads of laundry. Regular checks help conserve water, lower bills, and prevent damage.
Leak check checklist:
❑ Faucets: Look for drips or small streams of water when the faucet is turned off.
PLEASE NOTE: If you find significant issues, it’s best to consult a professional plumber.
❑ Toilets: Add a few drops of food coloring to the tank. If the color appears in the bowl without flushing, you have a leak.
❑ Under Sinks: Check cabinets under sinks for any signs of moisture or water stains.
❑ Showerheads: Look for drips when the shower isn't in use.
❑ Appliances: Inspect around dishwashers, washing machines, and water heaters for any signs of leaks or moisture.
❑ Water Meter: Turn off all water in your home, then check the meter. If it's still moving, you likely have a leak somewhere.
Seal up those drafts for a cozy home
Brrr, are those chilly drafts giving you the shivers? It's time to find those air leaks and close them down.
Drafts can sneak in through the smallest cracks and crevices around your windows, doors, and other openings. Not only do they make your space uncomfortable, but they could drive up your energy bills.
But this is an easy fix. Just grab a couple of supplies from the hardware store, and you'll be ready to fix those drafts.
The hunt for drafts
First, you'll need to locate the air leaks. Carefully inspect around windows, doors, electrical outlets, and anywhere else that leads outside. Feel for drafts with your hands or use a candle or smoke pencil to see where the air is escaping.
Once you've found the leaks, it's time for action.
Seal 'em up
• For most small leaks, a simple tube of caulk will do the trick. Look for a good quality caulk that's designed for the job, like one made for windows and doors. Apply it carefully around the edges, making sure to fill in any gaps or cracks.
• If you've got larger holes or openings, you might need to bust out some expandable spray foam insulation.
• For those drafty windows and doors, you can also add weather-stripping or door sweeps to create a tighter seal.
With those air leaks sealed up, you'll notice a difference in your home's comfort level. No more cranking up the heat to combat those drafts. You'll stay cozy, and your energy bills might just thank you.

Generator safety: What you need to know
When the power goes out, generators can be lifesavers. But using them safely is crucial. Here's what you should know:
Permanent standby generators:
• Require professional installation
• Must be connected through a safety transfer switch
• Provide continuous power during outages
Portable generators:
• Great for temporary power needs
• Use heavy-duty extension cords to power appliances directly
• Never connect to your home's wall outlet – this can cause dangerous "backfeed" putting utility workers and civilians at risk by unexpectedly energizing downed power lines
Safety tips when using a generator:
1. Always follow the manufacturer's guidelines
2. Place portable generators outdoors on a dry, stable surface
3. Keep generators far from doors, windows, and vents to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning
4. Ensure proper ventilation
5. Never use generators in enclosed spaces
Remember, generator safety is non-negotiable. Improper use can lead to electrocution, fire, or carbon monoxide poisoning. When in doubt, consult a professional.
By following these guidelines, you'll keep your family safe while enjoying the benefits of backup power. Please stay safe and prepared.
