Michelle Witt | Executive and Artistic Director
Looking back on this past season at Meany Center, we’re filled with gratitude and excitement. Every performance invited us to connect, discover and experience something new.
From the stage to the classroom to our public spaces, creativity thrived. Artists crossed genres, cultures and generations, reminding us of the shared humanity at the heart of every performance.
We were honored to welcome Rhiannon Giddens as our Artistic Partner this season. Her inspiring series, The Transcendence of Cultural Connections, brought us five powerful performances that showed how music and art can bring people together. Our continued work with former Artistic Partner Marc Bamuthi Joseph, From Artistic Joy to Collective Wellness, reminded us of the deep healing power of the arts.
Throughout the year, the themes of justice, resilience and hope ran strong. Artists shared stories with honesty and joy, sparking empathy and understanding. In a world that often feels divided, the season offered space for reflection, renewal and connection.
Thank you for being part of our Meany family. Your presence and support make everything we do possible — and we can’t wait to welcome you back.
EX MACHINA/ROBERT LEPAGE & CIRQUE
FLIP FABRIQUE: SLAM!
SLAM! fused Lepage’s theatrical and multimedia genius with FLIP Fabrique’s energetic acrobatics. The result was an avant-garde blend of circus, illusion and the larger-than-life spectacle of world wrestling.
KO
This vibrant concert of Congolese rhythms with Irish folk and jazz introduced audiences to immigrantinfluenced traditions seldom heard in U.S. venues.
Downs’ concert was a tapestry of Mexican folk, ranchera and contemporary songs. Her powerful voice and storytelling brought the audience to its feet, inspiring both celebration and solidarity.
Mixing Bach, bluegrass and Meyer’s newest work, the trio delivered a genre-defying concert. Their performance revealed the eclecticism of chamber music, sparking spontaneous ovations.
PILOBOLUS: RE:CREATION
In re:CREATION, dancers morphed into living sculptures, seamlessly blending shadow play with breathtaking athleticism. Through movement, humor and connection, they reminded us that creativity is fundamental to the human experience.
Blending Tuscarora roots with soulful Americana, Fé and Lowry’s music amplified Indigenous voices and built a deep connection with Seattle communities through story and song.
Performing Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata, alongside works by Schoenberg and Schumann, Ax brought warmth and insight to every note in a deeply expressive recital that felt both intimate and universal.
Schoenberg’s Pierrot Lunaire, semi-staged and featuring Hila Baggio’s expressive vocals, transformed the composer’s surreal cabaret into a haunting, theatrical experience.
Featuring virtuosic fiddle, guitar and storytelling, the O’Connors shared holiday music rooted in Appalachian and Pacific Northwest traditions, bringing warmth and hometown charm to Meany.
The British ensemble’s a cappella brilliance ranged from Renaissance motets to pop, showcasing their impeccable harmony and the limitless possibilities of their eight unique voices in this holiday program.
The all-male cast pirouetted through Swan Lake with technical bravura and comic genius. Their hilarious send-up of ballet tradition delighted audiences with dance that transcends gender boundaries.
With thunderous drums and ritual precision, Kodō delivered an electrifying taiko performance. Their rhythms stirred the spirit and invited the audience into joyful, communal energy.
This tap-and-piano dialogue was a revelation, riffing from Bach to Gershwin, blurring boundaries between music and movement in real time with surprising wit, rhythm and harmony.
The legendary sarod master and his sons shared North Indian ragas spanning generations. Seattle audiences experienced a rare, intergenerational dialogue between members of the first family of the sarod.
With youthful energy and tight ensemble playing, the quartet performed Mozart, Beethoven and a new work by Billy Childs. Their fresh interpretations earned them instant Meany fans.
Twenty-five leading artists and ensembles performed in the 2024–25 Season, including eight who graced the Meany stage for the very first time.
Open Door and The Equality of Night and Day wove West African dance, gospel and spoken word into a reflection on justice and community. The performance powerfully connected diasporic cultures and histories.
Denk’s traversal of Bach’s Partitas was a masterclass in musical storytelling. Each suite unfolded with clarity, insight and a sense of discovery, captivating audiences with Denk’s signature style.
Directed by Rhiannon Giddens, the program spotlighted global traditions of women and non-binary artists — from Japan to the Tuscarora Nation. It shared stories and music rarely heard together on one stage.
Deep River united visionary choreography with Lisa Fischer’s soaring vocals and Jason Moran’s jazz experimentation. Combining classical ballet with contemporary dance, the company explored themes of resilience and hope.
This Land featured Black and women composers, blending classical and jazz influences. Downes’ performance illuminated overlooked stories, moving listeners toward a more inclusive musical canon.
Curated by Rhiannon Giddens, this program traced the banjo’s journey from Africa to America. In a new artistic collaboration, the blues legend and McCalla offered a journey through music history and tradition.
TCP, joined by Montgomery, performed her percussion quartet paired with Lou Harrison’s gamelan-inspired violin concerto, transporting the audience into a sound world at the intersection of tradition and modernity.
In a tribute to U2, dancers translated the band’s anthems into bold, contemporary movement. Their performance thrilled with athleticism, precision and emotional impact.
Biss’ performance of Schubert’s late sonatas, and a new work by Tyshawn Sorey, was deeply personal. Through spoken insights and expressive playing, he invited us into the composers’ worlds of struggle and transcendence.
Bringing the Persian Shahnameh to life, this cinematic shadow play featured 500 handmade puppets and live animation. A visual and musical epic, it enchanted audiences of all ages.

Meany Center’s 2024–25 Season showcased visionary artists whose bold, inclusive work challenged norms, sparked reflection and highlighted the power of creativity on human health and well-being.
The initiative From Artistic Joy to Collective Wellness, conceptualized by Marc Bamuthi Joseph in collaboration with Meany Center staff, has become a guiding force for building deeper connections across the University of Washington. In partnership with the UW Resilience Lab, this effort has sparked a campus-wide dialogue exploring how artistic expression contributes to well-being and resilience.
Central to the initiative was a series of conversations engaging faculty, staff and students in reflecting on these themes. The culminating event featured a powerful exchange between Marc Bamuthi Joseph and 2025–26
Artistic Partner Peter Sellars, moderated by Vice Provost Ed Taylor and Megan Kennedy of the Resilience Lab, titled Art, Democracy and Civic Health.
In another conversation, pianist Jonathan Biss spoke about his struggle with performance anxiety, offering a vulnerable and resonant perspective on mental health in the arts. In combination with the full scope of events, this initiative affirms the role of creativity in fostering a more compassionate and connected campus and community culture.

Arts of Course connects UW students to live performances, enhancing learning and fostering community through free tickets, classroom integration and unforgettable experiences that inspire curiosity, insight and creativity.
At Meany Center, our Arts of Course initiative makes the performing arts a vibrant part of academic life. In partnership with UW faculty, students in select courses receive free tickets to Meany Center Visiting Artist performances to connect live art with classroom learning. By aligning performances with course themes, the program brings ideas to life in powerful, memorable ways. Students across disciplines say attending a show deepens their understanding and often shifts their perspective. But the impact goes beyond academics. Students describe these experiences as “joyful,” “inspiring” and “unforgettable.” One student shared, “It was especially meaningful to see this show with my class and share the experience — it inspired each of us in different ways.”
Arts of Course is more than just seeing a show. It fosters connection, sparks curiosity and helps students feel a deeper sense of community — enriching both their education and personal growth.

Meany Center inspires the next generation by expanding access to the arts for youth, students and educators through performances and meaningful engagement with visiting artists.
Meany Center presents performing artists who inspire creativity, spark conversation and elevate shared experiences that bring the community together. To expand access, we offer a range of free and discounted ticket programs for students, youth and educators.
A highlight of each season is the free student matinee series for Seattle Public Schools, which reaches nearly 5,000 students each year. This year’s performances included Pilobolus, Ronald K. Brown/EVIDENCE, Alonzo King LINES Ballet and Complexions Contemporary Ballet.
With support from sponsors and community partners, Meany Center distributed $33,670 in free and discounted tickets during the 2024–25 Season. In partnership with TeenTix, we offer $5 tickets to youth, and a separate initiative provides $10 tickets for UW students. Through a collaboration with the Seattle Music Teachers Association, Meany supports music education across the region by inviting music teachers to attend performances.
Reducing barriers to the arts remains central to Meany’s mission and reflects a deep commitment to ensuring access for all members of the community.
NOTE: Dollar amounts rounded to the nearest thousand.
Support of $580,000 is reported net of a 15.6% administrative overhead fee on self-sustaining revenue, or approximately $214,000 for FY25.
