Dear FRIENDS

This year, Meany launched From Artistic Joy to Collective Wellness, a new multi-year initiative focused on the mental health of youth on our campus and in the community.

To lead this exploration of artistic intelligence as an agent of public healing, we invited artist, activist and The Kennedy Center’s Director of Social Impact, Marc Bamuthi Joseph, to be our 2023–24 Artistic Partner.

It was an exciting beginning to a project that will span several years as Meany works with UW administrators, faculty and students to more fully integrate the arts into students’ academic and campus experience.

Meany Center presented four commissions and world premieres this Season, including Marc Bamuthi Joseph’s Carnival of the Animals. We also commissioned Noche Flamenca’s Searching for Goya, Turtle Island Quartet’s Island Prayers, and Elevator Songs by former Mellon fellow Gabriel Kahane, which he performed with Roomful of Teeth.

Memorable events included the return of Compañía Nacional de Danza to our stage for the first time in ten years; the Meany debuts of pianists Isata Kanneh-Mason and Michelle Cann; and a collaboration between the Calder String Quartet and Deaf dance troupe Antoine Hunter’s Urban Jazz Dance Company, among many others.

Of course, none of this would be possible without you.

Thank you for your support and for being an integral part of the Meany family.

On the MEA NY STAGE

ISATA KANNEH-MASON

Pianist Isata Kanneh-Mason’s Meany Center debut electrified audiences with Fanny Mendelssohn’s Easter Sonata, misattributed to her brother Felix for 150 years.

TURTLE ISLAND QUARTET

Island Prayers by Turtle Island Quartet celebrated Turtle Island’s cultural spectrum with new works by Terence Blanchard, Rhiannon Giddens, Jerod Impichchaachaaha’ Tate and David Balakrishnan.

GRUPO CORPO

Grupo Corpo’s performance featured vibrant choreography in Gil Refazendo and poetic imagery in Gira, blending classical and modern Brazilian dance with sinuous, athletic movements.

HAMID RAHMANIAN’S SONG OF THE NORTH

Hamid Rahmanian’s Song of the North was canceled due to theft and damage of essential equipment and puppets. The company rebuilt the show and we are excited to present it in the 2024–25 Season.

ROOMFUL OF TEETH

Roomful of Teeth exhilarated us with Gabriel Kahane’s Elevator Songs premiere, plus works by Caroline Shaw and Leilehua Lanzilotti. Their vocal experimentation and irreverent collaboration expanded vocal possibilities, earning a standing ovation.

GARRICK OHLSSON

Garrick Ohlsson thrilled audiences with Chopin’s Impromptu No. 2, Barcarolle, Fantasy and Scherzo No. 3. His crisp, vigorous interpretations showcased virtuosic firepower without Romantic excess.

SOLEDAD BARRIO & NOCHE FLAMENCA

The world premiere of Searching for Goya at Meany Center featured Soledad Barrio and Noche Flamenca. Inspired by Goya’s art, the performance combined powerful flamenco rhythms and evocative tableaux, enthralling audiences.

MANY MESSIAHS

The premiere of Many Messiahs received rave reviews for its blend of hip hop, salsa and gospel. Audiences appreciated the pay-what-you-wish ticket policy, increasing accessibility and inclusivity.

COMPAÑÍA NACIONAL DE DANZA

Compañía Nacional de Danza electrified us with a dazzling display of versatility. From Nacho Duato’s virtuosic requiem to León and Lightfoot’s fiery mambo satire, the company’s expressive power left audiences transfixed.

MICHELLE CANN

Michelle Cann’s Meany debut showcased Chicago’s Black Renaissance luminaries, with works by Hazel Scott, Nora Holt and Irene Britton Smith. Cann blended virtuosic skill with passionate cultural advocacy.

RHIANNON GIDDENS

CIRCA HUMANS 2.0

Circa’s Humans 2.0 astonished with a symphony of acrobatics, sound and light. Ten performers pushed physical limits, creating breathtaking towers and leaps in a primal, intimate exploration of human potential.

WU HAN, PHILIP SETZER & DAVID FINCKEL

Wu Han, Philip Setzer and David Finckel inspired us with their chamber music mastery. Their intimate dialogue and flawless ensemble breathed new life into Debussy, Mendelssohn and Smetana trios.

SMALL ISLAND BIG SONG

Small Island Big Song featured Indigenous musicians from Taiwan, Papua New Guinea and Madagascar. Standout moments included powerful oceanic grooves, soulful island ballads and evocative visuals highlighting climate change impacts.

HÉLÈNE GRIMAUD

Hélène Grimaud’s passionate interpretations, technical brilliance and seamless transitions between pieces captivated the packed house, culminating in an eruption of applause and four encores.

MARK MORRIS DANCE GROUP

Mark Morris’s The Look of Love reimagined Burt Bacharach’s hits with soulful vocals, jazzy arrangements and witty choreography. This heartfelt tribute blended romance and whimsy, leaving us smiling from start to finish.

Twenty-two leading artists and ensembles performed in the 2023–24 Season, including eight who graced the Meany stage for the very first time.

CALDER QUARTET AND ANTOINE HUNTER’S URBAN JAZZ DANCE COMPANY

Calder Quartet and Antoine Hunter’s Urban Jazz Dance Company performed a groundbreaking fusion of music and dance. This poignant collaboration explored deafness in art, blending Beethoven, Eastman and innovative choreography inspired by Cage and Cunningham.

CARNIVAL OF THE ANIMALS

Meany Artistic Partner Marc Bamuthi Joseph’s Carnival of the Animals premiere fused dance, poetry and music in a reimagining of Saint-Saëns’ classic. Exploring democracy and societal values through innovative choreography and performance, this topic is ever more relevant.

CHRIS THILE

Chris Thile’s virtuosic mandolin and vocals mesmerized audiences. We were drawn in by his intimate solo performance, blending folk, bluegrass and classical influences with masterful musicianship and engaging storytelling.

YEFIM

BRONFMAN

Yefim Bronfman riveted us with his masterful interpretations of Beethoven, Schubert and Chopin. Standout moments showcased his technical brilliance and emotional depth.

ISRAELI CHAMBER PROJECT WITH KARIM SULAYMAN

Tenor Karim Sulayman’s long-awaited performance with the Israeli Chamber Project did not disappoint. His musicianship, stage presence and voice dazzled us, while the diverse program showcased exceptional artistry and cultural exchange.

RHIANNON GIDDENS

Audiences were spellbound as Rhiannon Giddens, Meany’s 2024–25 Artistic Partner, wove a tapestry of sound and story. Her genre-defying performance bridged past and present, leaving us moved by her powerful voice and poignant historical narratives.

CIE HERVÉ KOUBI

Cie Hervé KOUBI’s The Barbarian Nights thrilled us with dynamic choreography, exploring Mediterranean history. Highlights included powerful acrobatics, intricate formations and evocative storytelling through dance, blending cultural heritage and contemporary artistry.

CONNECTION

We first met Marc Bamuthi Joseph in 2021 when he facilitated Sozo Vision’s Healing Forward program. Sozo is an artist collective that promotes the role of artists as thought partners and catalysts for change.

Artistic Partner

We invited Marc Bamuthi Joseph to be our 2023–24 Season Artistic Partner and lead us on a multi-year journey of imagining Meany as a cultural hub that facilitates accessible pathways to the arts for students on campus and in the community.

Working with Marc, Meany Center staff identified the mental health of our student population at UW to be a top priority and a place where we felt we were well positioned to make a meaningful impact.

Over the season, Marc engaged in five separate virtual and in-person residency visits to help UW administration, faculty, students and staff imagine ways to normalize arts spaces as hubs for mental and emotional wellness for young people on and off campus.

INSPIRATION

The goal of From Artistic Joy to Collective Wellness is to promote the arts as a pathway to mental and emotional health in young people. For it to succeed, however, young people have to participate.

Arts of Course!

The 2023–24 Season was the second year of Arts of Course!, a Meany program that offers students and faculty free tickets to performances that are integrated into or required for academic courses.

Although UW students studying the performing arts have long had access to classes led by visiting artists, and often the opportunity to perform with them, Meany believes that the arts shouldn’t just be for arts students.

Arts of Course! is intended to create space that enriches learning opportunities for students from different disciplines, units and campuses. It also encourages faculty to think about how the arts might resonate with their teaching and subject matter.

Over the course of the season, 30 faculty members from units as diverse as Music, Dance, Women’s Studies and the Information School, to name a few, integrated the arts into 35 courses with 256 students attending performances at Meany Center.

INNOVATION

The performances you witness on our stage are the culmination of months and years of an artist’s life. But performance fees seldom cover the unpaid time spent creating them.

Artists need financial support, and one way Meany Center provides that is through commissioning new work.

This season, we commissioned four new works and presented five world premieres. Two of those commissions were on our Chamber Series, starting with Turtle Island’s Island Prayers which featured the work of four composers: Terence Blanchard, Rhiannon Giddens, Jerod Impichchaachaaha’ Tate and Turtle Island’s own David Balakrishnan. The other Chamber commission was Gabriel Kahane’s Elevator Songs, performed with vocal ensemble Roomful of Teeth. We commissioned Carnival of the Animals on our Crossroads Series and Soledad Barrio and Noche Flamenca’s Searching for Goya for Dance.

Finally, we presented the world premiere of Many Messiahs, an ambitious new work featuring multiple artists from diverse backgrounds riffing on Handel’s masterpiece, Messiah.

CONNECTION

Meany’s interest in youth extends beyond our campus — we believe that arts education should start young and last a lifetime.

Kids in the Hall

Over the years Meany has partnered with many organizations including Ladies Musical Club, the Seattle Public School District, The Nesholm Family Foundation, and others, to bring thousands of students to Meany for free matinees, and to take visiting artists into classrooms across the region.

This season, we welcomed a new partner: Seattle Music Teachers Association. Meany has long offered discounted tickets to music teachers, and also free tickets to youth under 18 with every ticket sold to a Chamber Music or Piano Series performance. We worked with SMTA to combine the two by inviting teachers to bring their students to Meany. Says SMTA member Ryan Worswick, “It’s always seemed like an obvious partnership because of how built-in the audiences are. Our students are ready-made to go and have a good time at those kinds of shows.”

INSPIRATION

Michelle Cann made her Meany debut with a program featuring Black women composers Florence Price, Margaret Bonds, Hazel Scott and others; but that was just the beginning!

Those Who Cann, Teach!

The day before Michelle Cann’s main stage performance, she joined the students of the UW Symphony Orchestra to play Rachmaninov and taught a piano workshop for middle school students on our stage at Meany for the Seattle Piano Institute.

For her program at Meany, Michelle’s aim was to bring awareness to the work of Black women composers who have been overlooked for decades. Michelle herself had never heard of Florence Price until 2016 — she was so inspired by Price’s unique writing style that fused jazz, spirituals, gospel and classical that she began researching other Black composers. She now works to inspire others to play these works and teach them to their students as well.

INNOVATION

In September of 2021, Michelle Witt received a cryptic email from Martin Santangelo, artistic director and choreographer for the dance company Soledad Barrio and Noche Flamenca.

“When can I call you?” Martin wrote. “I have a question.”

Searching with Noche Flamenca

Martin’s question regarded two ideas he had for a possible new work and he wanted Michelle’s input. He described both, and Michelle’s response was immediate: The one about Goya. Three years later, after many further phone discussions, emails, images, vignettes, videos of rehearsals and updates on the work’s progress, Searching for Goya made its world premiere on the Meany stage. Along the way, Meany also signed on as a commissioner. Our relationship with Noche Flamenca goes back many years, so the decision to support it was an easy one to make.

Since its debut in November, Searching for Goya has been performed at the Joyce Theater, Jacob’s Pillow and Joe’s Pub, among other prestigious presenters. We are proud to have been involved from the beginning.

INSPIRATION

One of Meany Center’s core values is inspiration through the arts. Engaging directly with the community can be a meaningful catalyst for transformation.

The Art of the Matter

Watching a performance that moves you is one way the arts can inspire; another is when an artist engages directly with their audience. This season Meany provided many opportunities for our community both on campus and off to meet visiting artists away from the proscenium arch. Marc Bamuthi Joseph gave a free lecture at Town Hall about the arts as a vehicle for communal healing.

Small Island Big Song, an ensemble of musicians from the seafaring cultures of the Pacific and Indian Oceans, offered community workshops in dance and drumming and also participated in a panel discussion about climate change. Circa invited community members to join the circus in an afternoon workshop of movement and acrobatics, while Grupo Corpo and Compañía Nacional de Danza sent their dancers into the UW Department of Dance to work with students. These are just a few examples of how the Meany Center inspires through the arts.

INNOVATION

When we first invited Marc Bamuthi Joseph to be Meany’s Artistic Partner, we knew he was working on a new project, an evening-length concert experience with dance, poetry and music.

Carnival of the Animals 

Marc’s Carnival of the Animals reimagined Camille SaintSaëns’s zoological fantasy of the same name written 100 years before. Marc’s version, however, was a direct response to the January 6 Capitol building attack — an exploration of the political jungle, with the animals that inhabit it representing shifting societal values and our relationship to democracy.

Unlike our 2022–23 Artistic Partner Bill T. Jones, or our 2024–25 Partner Rhiannon Giddens, Marc’s involvement with us was not about artistic programming — his focus was primarily on promoting art as a vehicle for social change, collective health and wellness for young people.

So, we were thrilled for the opportunity to highlight Marc’s work as an artist by signing on as a co-commissioner of this challenging work and presenting its world premiere on our stage.

MATINEE FEVER

Meany Center visiting artists performed for more than 2,200 students, representing at least 50 different school groups, in our free matinee program this season. In addition, 90 students from James Baldwin Elementary were given a free performance and lecture/demonstration with Turtle Island String Quartet in a special school assembly.

Meany by the Numbers — some exceedingly odd! In the 2023–24 Season:

0 was the price to attend free matinees at Meany for thousands of middle and high school students.

48

UW students worked a total of 7,067 hours in Meany’s marketing, philanthropy, education, front of house and ticket office.

24 student ushers represented 23 different majors, including three in the arts.

26,908

tickets were sold — an increase of 3% over last season.

563 patrons donated for the first time.

500 shadow puppets were stolen in San Francisco, necessitating the cancellation of Hamid Rahmanian’s Song of the North.

555 shared leave hours were donated by Meany staff to a colleague recovering from a serious injury.

62 degrees was the average temperature in the Development office until staff realized they were using the wrong thermostat.
