Visitors to the 51st Annual Colusa Farm Show, the Granddaddy of all Farm Shows, can expect yet another exciting agriculturebased exhibition this year. This year’s Show has something for everyone.

Farm Show patrons can stop at each exhibitor so that they can hear about the latest and greatest equipment available, as well as safety products, and many other items of interest.

The volunteers who make up the Colusa Farm Show Committee bring a vast array of different experiences and information to ensure that this show is always at its best.

As was the tradition of the show’s forefathers, present day volunteers continue to keep the Colusa Farm Show on the cutting edge of agriculture. Additionally, the show continues to grow, and new events are added to improve on each year’s program.

Colusa Fair Foundation The Colusa County Fair Foundation was formed in 2014 after the State of California reduced its funding to county fairs.

Since that time the foundation has accomplished and accommodated a number of upgrades and renovations on the fairgrounds.

Foundation member Allen Etchepare, with the assistance of former interim Colusa County Fair CEO Susan Clark was instrumental in establishing the foundation.

Etchepare approached Clark about his family contributing to the maintenance and repair of Etchepare Hall, the building named in honor of Allen Etchepare’s late father Leon Etchepare.

Officers of the Colusa Fair Foundations include president Ben Carter, vice president Patti Hickel and secretary/treasurer Shiela Etchepare.

Throughout the year the foundation hosts a number of fundraising events from which the proceeds benefit fairgrounds projects.

Allen Etchepare’s idea was to create a tax exempt charitable organization to facilitate community donations for future needs and projects on the fairgrounds.

Clark took the idea to the Colusa County Fair Board and the foundation was created.

“I’m a farmer so I know the value of planting a seed,” previously said Allen Etchepare. “Hopefully this project is a seed that will promote additional community contributions for the betterment of the fairgrounds and buildings. The Foundation is a perfect opportunity for the community to plant seeds for the future of our fairgrounds.”

Shiela Etchepare previously commented that the foundation is not the fair board.

“The Colusa County Fair Foundation is like a “friends of the organization,” she said.

The purpose of the foundation is to help sustain the viability and maintenance of the fairgrounds 55-acre facility. She also commented that the contributions made through the Colusa County Fair Foundation are a wonderful way to give back to the community.

Colusa Farm Show Expanding Vendor Spaces

Innovative Ag Marketing Workshop

The 51st annual Colusa Farm Show will have room for more vendors this year.

The Show; known as the Granddaddy of Farm Shows typically boasts about 300 exhibits but this year there will be room for more.

Beginning with this year’s Farm Show February 2-4 the northeast lot of the Colusa County Fairgrounds just off of 9th Street will facilitate more vendors.

Fairboard member Terry Bressler explained that because the grass in that area was already being lost to draught conditions it seemed a good idea to use the space as a means to fill the demand for farm show spaces.

Vendors who have been on the waiting list for spaces were contacted first. It will also be utilized for much needed parking spaces.

There will be a gate from the new vendor area into the north end of the Farm Show.

Bressler says this plan has the potential to add about 40 more vendor spaces to the show. “This year the area will remain as is, but in future years gravel will be added,” said Bressler.

The 2016 Farm Show will feature the “Innovative Ag Marketing Workshop” hosted by the Colusa County Resource Conservation District. The public is invited to attend this workshop free of charge. The event will take place at the Pacific Gold Agriculture Building (Stagehands Theater) on Wednesday, February 3rd from 1:00 pm- 3:00 pm.

The focus of the workshop will be to give farmers unique ideas they can utilize to increase the sales of California specialty crops. Specialty crops are defined as most fruit, vegetable, nuts, herbs, spices, floriculture, and horticulture crops. The workshop will feature presentations on unique and creative ways to market agricultural produce including onthe-farm events, social media, branding campaigns and will provide farmers with some basic planning tools that will help tremendously when considering implementing new marketing approaches.

Local specialty crop producers Dan and Barbara O’Connell will talk about the innovative methods they use to market their produce. The O’Connell are well known for their on-the-farm store, outside sales and educational events they host to increase sales and promote California agriculture to the public.

Penny Leff, the Agritourism Coordinator for the UC Small Farm Program will discuss how a growing number of California farmers are inviting the public onto their land for enjoyment, education and entertainment. Her presentation will share some innovative and successful models of agritourism

offered by specialty crop growers, including U-Pick operations, farm stands, pumpkin patches and corn mazes, farm stays, harvest festivals, wine tasting, tours, camps and more. Penny will talk about the challenges faced by farmers as they join the tourism and hospitality industries, and some resources to assist farmers in overcoming those challenges.

Anna Farrell and Kristen Staggs of Farrell Design Group in Chico will present material on how, when, and why utilizing social media and branding can increase sales. Farrell Design Group represents themselves as a firm that loves agriculture which is easily confirmed by viewing their creative work.

Q&A with James Gallagher What accomplishment were you most proud of last year?

I’d have to say working to stop the slowdown of our West Coast ports was something I am pretty proud ofa pretty big deal. I said on the campaign trail that we’d hit the ground running, and sure enough this was a major issue that we took on right after swearing in. We put together a bi-partisan effort in the Legislature and lIt’s probably just a coincidence, but literally the day after we held our press conference on the steps of the Capitol calling on President Obama to get the ports opened, he sentshipped his Labor Secretary to California. I’m not saying we were the only factor but we played a strong role in pushing the issue. Shortly after, the two parties came to an agreement and the port resumed normal operationsopened back up. Working with Democrats and Republicans, we drew a lot of attention to this issue that was otherwise going unnoticed by a lot of folks. There’s still a lot of work to be done to prevent future shutdowns, and I’m hopeful that Congress will pass some reforms this year and develop a long-term solution.

What will be the most important issue for agriculture this year?

I think it will continue to be access to a reliable supply of water. California has not built a major water storage project since the 1970s.

Since then, the state’s population has nearly

doubled, from roughly 20 million people to almost 40 million, and there is not enough water available to meet the demands of the state. We must do more to ensure an adequate water supply in future droughts.

In the last two dry winters, Sites Reservoir could have captured 900,000 million-acre feet of new water. The reservoir is one of the most heavily studied water storage sites in California. As of 2014, $52 million had been spent on studies related to the Sites Reservoir, but shovels have not yet turned. After nearly 50 years of discussion, it is time to build water storage in the North State. It is time for the Sites Reservoir.

What is the status of the Sites Reservoir project?

The Sites Joint Powers Authority (JPA) will be submitting an application next year to the California Water Commission asking for funding from the Water Bond voters passed in 2014. There is $2.7 billion set aside in Prop 1 to help fund the public benefits of new water storage projects.

Sites will be competing with several other proposed projects for their share of this $2.7 billion.

Fortunately, Sites Reservoir will be one of the strongest applicants because its benefits align nicely with the water commission’s funding criteria. I have been meeting with key state leaders on the issue and I have received very positive feedback on the Sites project. The members of the JPA board have been working hard to put all the pieces in place to have a strong application and it looks very positive going into this year.

How would your bill (AB 311) have helped Sites?

I introduced Assembly Bill 311 to streamline the environmental review process to ensure that projects like Sites Reservoir would not get held up by frivolous lawsuits. The bill would still require a project to do an environmental impact report, but would have expedited the review process and limited a court’s ability to stop work on a project. This would ensure that the process is not abused by groups seeking to intentionally stop or delay new water storage. The Llegislature previously granted this streamlining to the Sacramento Kings Arena. Surely, something as important as water storage, which benefits all Californians, should receive the same streamlining.

What can the public do to help make Sites a reality?

It is important that the California Water Commission hear from supporters of Sites Reservoir. Voice your opinion on how to spend the $2.7 billion by emailing cwc@water.ca.gov.

What have you done to help educate your colleagues about agriculture?

Last year, I teamed up with the Butte County Farm Bureau to host an ag tour that gave several of my Assembly colleagues a firsthand look at North State agriculture.

Six Southern California legislators; Travis Allen, Chad Mayes, Matthew Harper, Patty Lopez, Jay Obernolte, and Scott Wilk spent the afternoon learning more about the ag industry and meeting with farmers from Glenn and Butte Counties. Tour stops included Omega Walnut Inc. in Orland, Rich McGowan’s diversified tree crop ranch in Chico, and Kelby and Josh Sheppard’s rice operation in Biggs. The group discussed many topics including regulatory challenges, the drought, and the painful effects of the port slowdown. My goal for the tour was to help legislators meet the people and families that grow our food. I also spent a lot of time with my new colleagues talking about the issues farmers and ranchers face and how we can make California’s ag sector even stronger. I penned an Op-Ed with the chairman of the Assembly Agriculture Committee, which ran in the San Francisco Chronicle, explaining the truth about the water used by California agriculture and how farmers have experienced significant cut-backs and made tremendous strides in conserving water. This year, I plan on hosting more of my legislative colleagues in the North State to give them an inside look at agriculture and the people who make it possible.

51st Colusa Farm Show Seminars The 51st annual Colusa Farm Show February 2-4, will feature a wide variety of seminars and valuable ag-related information for its patrons.

Frances M. Etchepare Memorial Courtyard Colusa County Fair’s Etchepare Hall has served as a legacy to the late Leon Etchepare for many years.

Leon Etchepare served as a Fair Board member and president. After his death in 1976 the Board dedicated Etchepare Hall in his memory.

His widow Frances Etchepare, an avid gardener, was actively involved in planning the new landscaping for the building when she passed away in 2013. The Etchepare family continued the project and is now developing the Frances M Etchepare Memorial Courtyard in her honor.

The project is one of the ongoing projects being assisted by donations to the Colusa County Fair Foundation, which Allen Etchepare (Leon and

Frances’s son) was instrumental in establishing with former interim Colusa County Fair CEO Susan Clark.

The new courtyard which was opened with a Chamber of Commerce ribbon cutting during the 2015 Colusa County Fair features a large open area surrounded by raised flower beds and a presentation platform. The design of the gated courtyard will make it a very pleasant outdoor area where meetings and other community events can be held.

The renovations also include installing a drainage system which will eliminate any flooding issues of the area. “It is always important to keep water away from buildings,” said Allen Etchepare.

It was designed as an educational venue for the UC Master Gardeners and Colusa County Garden Club as well as a social and business gathering place for the community.

Contributions made by the Etchepare family through the foundation have provided painting of the building, a new roof and now the courtyard and garden plus new air conditioning for the building.

The interior garden plant design was done by John and Diane Vafis with a drought tolerant, low water use theme and will be planted by members of the UC Master Gardeners and Colusa Garden Club.

The Etchepares said they are very pleased to be honoring Leon and Frances with this project. They also commented that the contributions made through the Colusa County Fair Foundation are a wonderful way to give back to the community.

“Master Gardener, Diane Vafis has made considerable contributions to the project by selecting plants that will do well and are water wise,” said Shiela Etchepare. “These plants although water wise, are very beautiful and will showcase the courtyard area,’ she said.

Allen Etchepare explained this project originally came about after he had a conversation with fair board member Bob Vierra. “I noticed the area

Sheep Barn Renovation The Colusa County Fairgrounds sheep barn is a vital area for the young people who participate in the Colusa County Fair Junior Livestock Auction (JLA).

In what Fair Board member Terry Bressler describes as a multi-year project, the upgrades and renovations to the barn have begun this year with “seed money” provided by the JLA from auction sales.

Bressler said there is a lot of work to do in order to renovate the barn. “This is a good start. We should complete approximately one third (1/3) of the needed repairs and upgrades this year,” he said.

He also commented that it is great the JLA provided the seed money, but that more donations are needed to complete the project entirely.

The first project is to replace the cement deck. They also hope to add new fencing this year.
