I SEE FIELDS OF GREEN Castle Building & Remodeling partners with Field Outdoor Spaces to provide their clients with the best urban landscaping in the Twin Cities While many companies shy away from the tight lots and challenging yards in urban spaces, Field Outdoor Spaces has made an art of it. For the last eight years and counting, Field has worked with homeowners in Minneapolis, St. Paul and other neighborhoods around the Twin Cities to maximize their outdoor living areas. Most projects start with a design and the experienced designers, led by owner Jason Rathe, are especially good at listening and making sure that the end product gives you time to enjoy the space rather than just work to keep it up. Field design balances well-thoughtout living areas with plantings that give a sense of a natural and living environment.

Using the example of a typical 40’ by 30’ backyard – Rathe figures that they can come in take everything out, install a bluestone patio, restore the beds and lawn and plant the backyard with a couple small trees and natural plantings for between $12,000 and $14,000. Field offers thoughtful design, professional crews that build high-quality landscapes with minimal impact on your existing plants, structures and your neighborhood. Field projects are predominantly completed in typical urban front and backyards – spaces that are hard to get into and have layers of history and decay. A typical South Minneapolis or Mac-Groveland backyard is about 40’ wide by 30-40’ long. A project like this will often start with a patio and Field recommends wiping out the entire lawn and planting beds at the same time. This means that lots of compost can be added to all the areas and you can get a great start to your new lawn and beds. Field says the “hot” materials for patios are bluestone, clay paver and historic street brick. We also incorporate landscape carpentry like pergolas, trellises and raised planters – the elements really help break up the space and make it feel like an outdoor room. Field prides itself on being up front on pricing. During the free consultation, the Field designer will walk through the scope of the project and listen to what you want to accomplish with your renovation. They then describe how 14

By-the-Creek Full Yard Landscape 5336 York Ave. S., Minneapolis, MN 55410 Full yard landscaping for a Tudor-style house with front hillside and west facing backyard that was unusable due to blazing west sun. A small front wall and patio creates a calm sitting area to admire the wild area of nearby Minnehaha Creek. Plant selections throughout the property include many shrubs and evergreens that focus on foliage color and lower maintenance requirements. The curving lines of the back patio, walkway and yard make each part of the yard feel finished and intentional.

Modern and Natural 3841 Pleasant Ave. S., Minneapolis, MN 55409 Field took the design done by a friend of the owner’s and built this satisfying modern and natural backyard. The outdoor grill counters/ prep stations were created in combination with Mill City Steel. The steel frames and hot-rolled steel counter surface are a great way to create a cost effective and hip outdoor kitchen. The separate gravel firepit area bordered in bluestone stone interlaces with planted berms. There is ample room for annual flowers in the steel planters next to the patio and room for vegies in the planters near the alley.

Chess Patio and Rustic Outdoor Kitchen 5304 James Ave. S., Minneapolis, MN 55419 The design for this ultra small urban backyard includes a patio that doubles as a chess board and a chunky wood frame outdoor kitchen that holds a Green Egg and gas grill. The rough hewn wood look is carried through with posts for a hammock and two benches that sit on either side of a small firepit. Gravel and planting areas help get the most from every inch of this space.

Castle Building & Remodeling, Inc. is a professional design/build firm specializing in residential remodeling. Castle is a second-generation family business, started in 1977, with over 2,800 past clients. Marty Schirber started the company from his basement and watched it grow over the years. In 2005, Castle moved into its headquarters on Johnson St NE, and two years later Loren acquired Castle Building & Remodeling from his father. Since then, Castle has seen two more locations open, one in St. Paul and the other in South Minneapolis. The unique design studios allow Castle’s interior designers to help clients plan anything from a not so big project all the way up to a whole house reconfiguration. In June of 2012, Castle merged with Camelot Builders, LLC and Aaron Johnson joined the ownership team at Castle as Operations Manager. With the addition of the Camelot employees, Castle can better handle all sizes of remodeling projects. In March of 2014 Castle acquired The Natural Built Home Store and now works to incorporate eco-friendly materials in each project.

Designing and crafting is something that has been engrained into Ashley’s character through the influence of family and friends. The concept of DIY was taught to her early on. From years of practicing this, whether it be sewing clothes, sewing her comforter, making art, or upholstering furniture she developed a passion for design. Ashley recognizes that designers are given a great responsibility and opportunity to redefine quality. Interior Design is an outlet in which she is able to share this belief knowing how the layout, selections and aesthetic appearance of a space can truly impact people. Therefore she truly enjoys the opportunity to build relationships with clients and help them form solutions which consider both form and function and best accommodate their lifestyle.
Courtney got her start in interior design well before she had any formal training. She received a Bachelors of Science in Interior Design in 2011 from The Art Institutes International Minnesota, and has been with Castle since. She started out as a Design Intern and quickly worked her way up to doing her own projects. Starting out assisting other designers gave her the opportunity to really learn Castle’s process and observe the different design techniques individual designers at Castle use. With this strong foundation and the desire to always be improving she is excited to tackle any new opportunity Castle throws her way. When she is not at Castle, Courtney enjoys cuddling up with a good book and her cat, Carl or spending hours exploring the endless parks in the area.
Surrounded by DIY parents and a houseful of brothers in the woods; Janneke grew up with a penchant for the hands-on and the playful, as well as a deepseated respect for nature. At work, she resonates with crafting amazing spaces through creative use of resources and approaches every project with an excitement that shines through the final product. She believes beauty in design is best achieved through high-functioning spaces, and refuses to believe the two concepts are mutually exclusive.
Mark started remodeling homes in 1978 and operated his own design/build firm for 25 years. He has been a long time member of the National Association of the Remodeling Industry and served on the Board of Directors for the Minnesota Chapter of NARI from 19912007.

In 1992, Mark’s company was chosen by Remodeling Magazine as one of their ‘Big 50′ contractors of the year. As President of the Minnesota Chapter in 1994, Mark was honored with the Industry Leader of the Year Award. In December of 2007, Mark was named as a founding Director for Minnesota GreenStar and served as the Minnesota GreenStar Treasurer and Operations Manager through the end of 2011.

Emily Blonigen received her Bachelor of Science in Interior Design from the Art Institutes International Minnesota. One thing that she appreciates from her education is the artistic approach Ai takes to the Interior Design profession. Emily is currently studying for her LEED Green Associates Certification. Her main interest in the field is to find opportunities to create sustainable and healthy environments. Design may be achieved through trends, unique styles, colors and materials, but great design is found through considering the users experience and the continuing future within that environment. With knowledgeable design practices and smart material selections, she is opening the doors of design towards a prosperous and more sustainable future that she is excited to be a part of.
Alyssa graduated in May of 2013 with her Bachelor of Science in Architecture from the University of Minnesota- Twin Cities.

She studied abroad in the Spring of 2012 in Oaxaca, Mexico and came to appreciate the contrast in architectural style when comparing the courtyard buildings there to the high rises in the Twin Cities. Alyssa grew up in a family that enjoys flipping houses and was drawing floor plans in chalk on her grandmother’s driveway by age five. Alyssa loves skiing, hiking, camping and anything that will give a rush of adrenaline such as skydiving, white water rafting and zip lining. She has traveled to Europe and Central America, and foresees plenty of adventure in her future!

During her ten plus years in the remodeling industry Amy has worked as a drafter, designer, project manager and store manager. She has achieved certification as an Associate Kitchen and Bath Designer through the NKBA, as well as a LEED Green Associate through the USGBC. At Castle and The Natural Built Home Store, she pitches in wherever needed. She works on keeping the showrooms up to date, assists designers with projects, trains new employees and leads design work for the Save-A-Castle division. She develops, edits and maintains companywide processes and documents while also fostering continuing education among the design staff.

Natalie Hanson

Natalie received her Bachelor of Science in Interior Design in 2012 and has been actively working in the industry ever since. She attended an alternative high school at the Minnesota Zoo called the School of Environmental Studies, where she developed a passion for environmental sciences. Right out of high school, she decided to pursue a career in Meteorology at the University of Oklahoma where she spent two years chasing tornados and attending Sooner football games. While this was exciting, she knew that it was not a lifetime career path for her. She has been interested in art, architecture and interiors since childhood and settled on the field of interior design for her next educational adventure.

Normally, when we do a kitchen remodel, the kitchen is out of commission for a few months. That was not the case with this project! This client chose to move the kitchen to an entirely different room. We removed an abandoned chimney and moved the kitchen to the existing sitting room. Now, the kitchen is much closer to the traditional dining room and front living room. Rather than a single wall of cabinetry, this homeowner now has more cabinetry than they know what to do with. We maximized space by bringing the cabinets all the way to the ceiling and incorporated shelving in the closet under the stairs for pantry/small appliance/cleaning supply storage. The carpet was removed and hardwood floors were refinished in the entire 1st floor. Care was taken to incorporate and repair the existing antique light fixtures as well. Educational Feature: Kitchen Layout Basics
The kitchen is this 1996 built home, in an old section of NE Minneapolis, needed a refresh. Dropped soffits over the upper cabinets restricted storage space and the Homeowners needed an upgrade from the laminate countertops and basic oak cabinetry. In addition, they wanted to open up a wall between the living room and dining room and add a threesided fireplace.

The basic layout of the kitchen stayed the same, but Castle added a lot more flair with cherry stained cabinets and a painted island cabinet. Cambria countertops and a maple butcher block top over the island cabinet accent the unique tile backsplash with a handmade bubble tile detail over the range. The same custom tile is used as a fireplace surround to tie the entire project together.

Having a well built, classic design, this 1965 home has been a space which the homeowners have enjoyed for about fourteen years. To extend that enjoyment for another twenty plus years, this family desired a kitchen remodel which would be utilitarian, low maintenance, and an overall timeless design. Wanting the new design to provide a more open flow from entry/living room a wall, which had separated the two, was removed. In addition, the “everyday” kitchen table area was replaced with extended cabinets and a large center island. The large island provides a welcoming space for guests to perch and chat with the husband who loves baking. While making the kitchen space more functional for everyday use, the dining room was also updated by adding built in cabinets to store seasonal items and display keepsakes. A lower cabinet beneath the window will dual function as both a seating bench and countertop for setting serving platters.

1) Wood Species - There are many types of wood species available. 2) Manufacturing Process - A good starting point in selecting your cabinets is to determine the options, availability and specialization your kitchen project timeframe and budget requires, then decide if stock, semi-custom or custom cabinets best suit your needs. Stock – These cabinets offer economical pricing, a wide range of standard sizes, styles and finishes and are often available the same day or within a few days of purchase. Semi-Custom – These cabinets offer more flexible options for storage, design and style as well as a wider selection of wood and finish choices. Semi-custom cabi-
nets offer more functionality.
Custom – These cabinets are constructed by hand to fit your kitchen to your specifications. Custom cabinets make use of all available space and are an ideal solution when non-standard sizes are needed to fit irregular-shaped spaces. Delivery time can take up to nine or more weeks, depending on the cabinet maker’s schedule. Price varies based on size, materials and options. 3) Cabinet Box Materials - Cabinets are often constructed from other materials or combinations of materials. These materials are often combined to provide cost-effective, high-quality durability for the parts of your cabinet that are typically unexposed or behind the scenes. Materials commonly used for cabinet boxes and shelves include: Medium Density Fiberboard (MDF) – An engineered wood made from fine wood particles and glue formed into sheets, MDF is often used as a backing material for laminates and other finishes. MDF is very dense, resists warping and has a smooth surface suitable for veneers, laminates and paints. Plywood – This engineered wood is composed of layers of veneers stacked and glued together with alternate layers oriented at right angles, providing strength in its length and width. Furniture-grade plywood is used in custom cabinetry. Because heat and moisture cause wood to expand and contract in the direction of the grain, plywood’s cross-grain pattern makes it more stable and stronger than solid wood. 4) Drawers – Make sure to check out the drawers and the hardware on the drawers. Is it soft close? Does the hardware mount on the sides of the cabinets taking up space and making the drawers smaller on the bottom?
6) Accessories & Add-Ons - Get the most out of your kitchen cabinets with accessories that help maximize storage, provide easy access to cabinet contents and reduce clutter on countertops. Pull-Out Shelves Shelve - Offer the convenience of quick access to everything on the shelf. Pull-Out

This 1920 home had a beautiful master bedroom with large windows bringing in lots of sunlight… but it was missing one thing… A master bathroom! We were able to utilize space from the existing closet and only steal about 18’’ from the master bedroom. Although it has a small footprint, this bathroom is nothing less than luxurious. Running the floor tile into the shower with a frameless glass shower door helps create the illusion of space where there would normally be a division. The Kohler memoirs pedestal also helps achieve the open, spacious feel in the bath. The two recessed LED can lights in addition to the sconces on either side of the recessed medicine cabinet really brighten up the space. Finally, the marble basket weave patterned floor tile and subway wall tile stay true to the classic style of the home, while the gray grout adds a more modern touch. In addition to the bath, a new closet with double doors was also created alongside the bath.

Educational Feature: Factors to Consider when Choosing a Contractor
We touched virtually every room in this South Minneapolis home. All three floors received significant remodeling. The lower level was turned into a wonderful family room for the owners and their grandchildren, while plenty of unfinished storage space was retained. The main level work included a larger kitchen, new mudroom/laundry room and the creation of a more open floor plan to the dining room and living room. The upper level increased in size with an addition over the main floor to add a private office. The master suite was gutted, enlarged and features a custom ž master bathroom. To accomplish the items listed above, we built a two-story addition in place of an existing breezeway, modified the master suite space by enlarging the master bath and combining the master closets, and gutted the lower level.

We really wanted the space to be a place for the owners to entertain, enhance the pieces they have obtained from traveling and other personal dĂŠcor, be beautiful on their own, and last but not least be functional and unified.

The size of a company can affect the quality of the product. A company that has grown too quickly may not be able to provide the same quality, experience, and attention to detail as a smaller company who has retained the same employees for years.
Job Schedule
Reputation
The contractor has a good reputation with past customers, and his customers refer him to friends and family.
The contractor is in charge of the scheduling of the job so your home is disrupted as little as possible. This involves ordering materials and coordinating subcontractors to get in, finish their part of the job, and get out.

Educational Feature: Reconfiguring Your Home
The old kitchen was partitioned into two separate spaces. Sometime after this 1936 home was built, an old breakfast nook was converted during a large addition to the rear of the home. Some additional cabinetry made the space into an extension of the kitchen. The combined space formed a long galley, but didn’t feel like a complete kitchen. Also, the dining room was separated from the kitchen by a swinging door. The Homeowner’s wanted to open up the kitchen to the dining room and combine the two sections of the kitchen into one, new, efficient kitchen with lots of storage, countertop space and improved lighting. Castle exceeded those desires with a fully integrated kitchen, tastefully connected to the dining room with an open archway and peninsula. A large window scape over the kitchen sink lets in tons of natural light to accent the rich alder cabinetry and hardwood flooring. The entire kitchen is connected by a unique and playful backsplash tile complementing the Cambria countertops.

Reconfiguring your Home Reconfiguring the layout of a home can help solve a lot of problems. The typical problems we hear day after day are rooms being too disconnected or lack of mudrooms, offices spaces, family rooms, or enough bathrooms and bedrooms. Sometimes the solutions can be as simple as opening up a wall to make rooms feel more connected and larger. Think the relationship between kitchen and dining rooms or using two bedrooms to create one large master suite. Sometimes, relocating a doorway or window can really transform a space and allow for better flow and storage or counter space in a kitchen. Oftentimes, unfinished space can be captured and finished to increase the amount of living spaces, bedrooms, or bathrooms in a home. We are contacted daily with homeowners inquiring about using their attic space or basements. We also find that reconfiguring just takes some getting used to thinking about how you will use the house vs. how you do currently. Having a designer out to your home allows for a fresh perspective. We can typically come up with alternate ideas right there on the spot. And during the design phase, with the help of our design software, we are able to create realistic 3D renderings. We find that this is a great tool in helping homeowners see what the newly reconfigured spaces will be like. Visualizing it before you buy it equals no surprises and allows you to explore all of your options. Design fees at Castle are typically 2-4% of expected construction costs and include 3d renderings. Educational Feature: Castle’s Design Service and Process This very typical, 1947 built, story and a half home in South Minneapolis had a small ‘U’ shaped kitchen adjacent to a similarly small dining room, with a standard side entry access, no more than a landing at the top of the basement stairs. No place to hang coats or take off shoes, and very little space for an active family to prepare meals and to store all the items needed in a modern kitchen. Many years earlier, a small screened-in porch was added off the dining room, but was getting minimal use. With a new, spacious, family room addition in the place of the old screen porch and a 5’ expansion off the kitchen and side entry, along with removing the wall between the kitchen and the dining room, this home underwent a total transformation from small cramped spaces to a wide open great room containing kitchen, dining and family gathering spaces. As a bonus, a bright and functional mud room was included to meet all of their needs.

This mid-50’s suburban home, still had the original kitchen cabinets, countertops and appliances and it was very overdue for a remodel. The Homeowners however, wanted to do more than just update their kitchen. Between the kitchen and a large living room and dining room were the basement stairs. Fortunately, an earlier addition to the house included a second set of stairs to the basement, so this stairway was expendable. By eliminating the stairway, Castle was able to expand the kitchen and open it up to rest of the house. With sleek, contemporary walnut cabinetry, a built-in breakfast nook using walnut and hickory and unique countertop and backsplash tile materials, this is truly a one-of-kind remodel. These homeowners purchased their dated 1941 home for the phenomenal location and knowing they planned to remodel extensively. The home had seen some questionable remodeling in the past (ask the designer about the windows!), so Castle was brought in for design and construction on what became a whole-home remodel and energy retrofit, with special focus on environmental sensitivity to reduce the remodel’s impact. In addition to a dramatically improved main floor and reworked upper level master suite, the project included a brand new kitchen and master bath, whole-house triple pane window package, spray-foam insulation throughout, beautiful durable finishes, many of which were salvaged and meticulously repurposed, and an incredible energy-efficient European skylight that you just have to see.

An energy retrofit is a whole-building analysis and construction process that uses “integrative design” to achieve much larger energy savings than conventional energy retrofits. Why can’t I just get solar panels?
A home energy analysis is the first step in the home energy retrofit process and typically takes between 2 and 4 hours. A professional building analyst will walk with you around your home to diagnose the root causes of energy loss and make individualized recommendations for the most cost-effective measures that will improve your home’s energy efficiency. This analysis will help you and us understand how your house performs as an integrated system. What is a blower door test? A blower door is a diagnostic tool designed to measure the air tightness of buildings and to help locate air leakage sites. A blower door consists of a calibrated fan for measuring an airflow rate, and a pressure-sensing device to measure the air pressure created by the fan flow. The combination of pressure and fan-flow measurements are used to determine the building air tightness. The air tightness of a building is useful knowledge when trying to increase energy conservation or decrease indoor air pollution, or control building pressures.

Looking to add more living space for this growing family, Homeowners of this 1923 St Paul home made the decision to finish their basement. A full new floor plan was designed to include a long list of must haves. The new space included: a new bedroom, family room for the kids to play, an additional room for guests and/or study, new 3/4 bath, easy access for bicycle storage in laundry, low pile carpet that is comfortable for the kids to play, and warmth for the MN winters! A great floor plan was designed that integrated the family room and guest bed/study that also creates wonderful sight lines and a great flow. The basement was updated with all new windows including two egress windows. Beautiful rainglass pocket doors were installed to the bath and laundry to continue the flow of natural light from room to room. Custom natural oak millwork and beautiful door knobs by Rejuvenation Hardware were installed throughout. To match the charm of the home, subway tile and hex tile floors were installed in the new bath and shower. The bath was finished with a stock vanity, mirror, lighting, and Kohler plumbing fixtures.

Educational Feature: Planning with your Designer using Social Media
The main living area in this 1956 home in Mendota Heights needed some updating. The homeowners’ decided to go with the Mid-Century Modern design style that they love and that fit the style of their home. The most dramatic change happened when we removed the wall between the Dining room and Kitchen. After this was complete we installed new hickory hardwood floors in the Living and Dining room, and slate tile on the floor in the Kitchen, Entry and down the Hallway. We took advantage of the new open layout by adding a large center island with a cooktop, seating on the Dining room side and a heater in the toe kick that helps keep the Kitchen tile warm on cold days. Custom walnut cabinets by Nest Woodworking were installed along with Cambria quartz countertops and glass mosaic tile from Mod-Walls on the backsplash. The project also features a few custom pieces built by Castle’s carpenters that include a walnut and black iron railing and a walnut veneer on the loadbearing beam that drops down on the ceiling above the island seating.

Educational Feature: Master Suite Upgrades and Options
This attic project started from a blank slate. The home is a typical one and a half story Cape Cod that had an existing stairwell to the attic space. The floor plan was created accommodating city building codes and to maximize ceiling height and storage space. This new master suite offers ample closet and storage space – a luxury in an older home such as this. The ¾ bathroom offers a spacious tiled shower with bench, a large custom vanity, and plenty of lighting for a clean, fresh feeling. The bedroom is large and light filled thanks to the addition of a skylight as well as replacement of the 2 existing windows. The challenge was to create a space that was efficiently conditioned – so the space was spray foamed and a separate heating and cooling unit was installed specifically for the master suite to avoid overloading the current system on the main floor and basement levels. In the end, the space is light, airy, relaxing and functional for the homeowner to enjoy for years to come.

This kitchen project started out as a kitchen refresh with the intention of painting existing cabinetry. Upon further budget analysis, the client decided to do a full remodel in order to get the space properly insulated and get fully functioning cabinetry with all the bells and whistles. The client knew for sure they wanted a black countertop, craftsmen elements, classic tile backsplash and a splash of burgundy, since it is her favorite color. The end result is the same layout but with cabinets that utilize all of the space they take up and are more functional through features like lazy susans, spice cabinets and more. We were also able to add a bench and pantry area by the back door for more organized storage. In the end, there are traditional craftsmen elements that are made modern by splashes of color and a little fun by doing two-toned cabinetry. The updated lighting in the space enhances the updated but classic feel and makes the space much lighter and brighter than before.

This 1 ½ story home was ready for some updates. The family was looking for a bit more space, so initially looked into moving; After seeing options on the market that would also require remodeling, they decided to restore their home and add some additional space so it would function better for the family. At first, Castle worked on a few layouts for a full 2nd story addition with 3 bedrooms and a bathroom; however, after additional planning we decided it didn’t make sense to tear out two perfectly good bedrooms and only add one additional bedroom and bath. Instead, we kept the two original dormer bedrooms and added a dormer bathroom for the kids rooms. This saved significant cost and allowed for a 2nd small mudroom addition off the back of the home. Although the addition was small, it allowed for a much more functional kitchen layout and spot for the essential Minnesota winter coats and boots. The first floor bathroom was also redone, textured walls in the living room and dining room were sanded and skim coated for a smooth finish, and floors in the dining and living rooms sanded and refinished. All of these improvements have really brought the house back to life so it seems like new!

Educational Feature: What is a Professional Remodeler?
After years of making due with a mere 3’ of countertop on either side of the sink, this baker and chef craved a functional kitchen. The layout initially had a standalone stove, standalone fridge, and one small bank of cabinetry by the sink. There was a cute breakfast nook, but it was underutilized as storage for cookbooks and cookware that had no place in the kitchen. The nook was also home to the roll-away leaky dishwasher that the homeowner mentioned wanting to attach to a trebuchet and catapult out of the kitchen! By simply rotating the top two steps of the basement staircase 90 degrees and taking down the walls from the breakfast nook, we were able to create a new layout that accomplishes all of the homeowners needs. Not only were we able to gain about 14 lineal feet of countertop, but also added tons of storage. There was even room for a wine fridge! The homeowners chose more traditional cabinetry so the kitchen would fit the style of their bungalow, and added some more modern touches including recycled glass countertops and green accent tiles. The kitchen is now ready to prep hundreds of delicious meals!

This 1940’s Bungalow located in the Como neighborhood of Saint Paul was ready for a Kitchen remodel that not only improved the look, but also the function. To enhance the work flow in the room the refrigerator was moved and a peninsula was added for additional work/storage space. The back wall of the Kitchen was also opened up to the home office and new glass panel barn doors were installed. On the opposite wall of the office a new triple panel sliding patio door was also added which gave the Kitchen a great view of the backyard. All new custom cabinetry went in with a few modifications like upper and lower pullouts next to the range. Recycled glass countertops were then installed with a copper, undermount, apron front sink. The original hardwood floors were uncovered in the eating area of the Kitchen, so new hardwood was installed in the rest of the Kitchen to match and then all of the hardwood floors on the main level were refinished. Along with the Kitchen updates some of the original character of the home was restored when the arches were added to a few of the main floor doorways that had been modified at some point in the past.
