Save A Castle
Castle's Save A Castle program helps turn dilapidated homes into dream homes. After several years of watching national homeownership rates fall Castle Building & Remodeling decided it was time to try to do something about it. Late in 2012 Castle formed a plan to begin “saving” old homes with character and either sell the homes to owner occupied families or help our employees to purchase a home through the Castle Employee Homeownership Assistance Plan. Our mission is to buy, remodel, and return these Castles to their former glory and make them ready for the next 80 years.
Our Favorite Types of Projects
• Homes with structural challenges or
that are small that can be expanded with a 2nd floor addition. • Properties not listed on the MLS. • Condemned or vacant properties in rough shape in above average neighborhoods.
Our Philosophy
We believe in doing things right the first time. Cutting corners to cover up problems isn’t our style. As a part of a larger remodeling organization, Castle Building & Remodeling, Inc. (www.castlebri.com) that works with hundreds of clients each year, we have no incentive to cut corners or do low quality repairs on our Save A Castle renovations. If you are interested in working with Save A Castle to locate and custom remodel a home please contact Loren Schirber at 612-877-8375.
Realtors and Homebuyers: Come to our Save A Castle homes and fall in love with with your future dream home.
We have several homes for sale on this tour as of printing date in August.

Gardens On Tour
Check out these 3 beautiful landscapes featured on our tour this year:
I SEE FIELDS OF GREEN
H11
Most projects start with a design and the experienced designers, led by owner Jason Rathe, are especially good at listening and making sure that the end product gives you time to enjoy the space rather than just work to keep it up. Field design balances well-thought out living areas with plantings that give a sense of a natural and living environment.
Designer: Field Outdoor Spaces
This St. Paul backyard offers many surprises. The buffalo grass lawn is low input and only requires one or two mows a year. The clay paver patio has a custom built stone bench and is surrounding by jutting rockgardens that hold a variety of plants that thrive is gravelly soils. In the back there is a “tuck away” patio only big enough to hold two chairs as a quiet refuge. The client has created an incredible roofed dining area attached to the garage that has a fantastic Italian landscape faux painting.
Castle Building & Remodeling partners with Field Outdoor Spaces to provide their clients with the best urban landscaping in the Twin Cities While many companies shy away from the tight lots and challenging yards in urban spaces, Field Outdoor Spaces has made an art of it. For the last eight years and counting, Field has worked with homeowners in Minneapolis, St. Paul and other neighborhoods around the Twin Cities to maximize their outdoor living areas.
408 Lexington Pkwy S. St Paul, MN 55105
they would approach your space and for most projects try to give a sense of what the budget might be right there. Using the example of a typical 40’ by 30’ backyard – Rathe figures that they can come in take everything out, install a bluestone patio, restore the beds and lawn and plant the backyard with a couple small trees and natural plantings for between $12,000 and $14,000.
H15
Field offers thoughtful design, professional crews that build high-quality landscapes with minimal impact on your existing plants, structures and your neighborhood. Field would love to talk to you about your next landscape project.
4139 Garfield Ave S. Minneapolis, MN 55409
Designer: Field Outdoor Spaces
This project makes the most of a small backyard with significant slope down to the garage. We tiered the yard and put a paver patio on the upper tier and a clean lawn area below. In between is a planted slope that is always in bloom with sliced stone steps that make for a natural transition. The property line is planted with small trees to create privacy. The patio has great paver work in a meandering design. The front walkway and front entryway stoop were completed with complementary materials.
Field projects are predominantly completed in typical urban front and backyards – spaces that are hard to get into and have layers of history and decay. A typical South Minneapolis or Mac-Groveland backyard is about 40’ wide by 30-40’ long. A project like this will often start with a patio and Field recommends wiping out the entire lawn and planting beds at the same time. This means that lots of compost can be added to all the areas and you can get a great start to your new lawn and beds. Field says that the hot materials for patios are bluestone, clay paver and historic street brick.
H17
520A Irving Ave S. Minneapolis, MN 55405
Designer: Field Outdoor Spaces
This eclectic cottage garden was installed and designed in phases starting in 2007. The small backyard features custom designed fence and deck with metal spindles, a mixed media patio with inlaid river stone and a “secret spring” waterfeature that percolates in an underground chamber. A bridge crosses the front yard raingarden that takes rainwater from two properties. The color palette of plants is boisterous playing off the wonderful annual combinations the client chooses for her upper and lower level window boxes.or sedi velibus.
We also incorporate landscape carpentry like pergolas, trellises and raised planters – the elements really help break up the space and make it feel like an outdoor room. Field prides itself on being up front on pricing. During the free consultation, the Field designer will walk through the scope of the project and listen to what you want to accomplish with your renovation. They then describe how 14 | Castle Educational Home Tour

Castle strives to provide the most educational topics: including a project that is in progress. The Castle process is very important. Not only does it define us as a company but helps maintain our reputation. Through our fourteen step process you know exactly where we are in your remodel and what is coming next. You can learn about the entire process and see detailed planning flowcharts at the home. Here at Castle we want to make sure you are included every step of the way. To keep you informed we invite you to stop by the project that is still in progress. Designer Alyssa Oleinik will walk you through this St. Paul home where we are transforming a story and a half into a 2 story home for a young family. On the main floor, we are reconfiguring the staircase, back bedroom, and bathroom. We will create a new staircase that meets code, a brand new bathroom/ laundry room, and a mudroom. Since we are doubling the size of the home, the family will now have 3 bedrooms and a bathroom upstairs. Quite the transformation! We began with reconfiguration of a portion of the main floor. Because the staircase to the attic did not meet code, we decided to relocate it. The staircase took the place of the main floor bathroom. The bathroom shifted to the back bedroom. Allowing space for laundry and a mudroom on the main floor. This was a high priority since the family usually comes in the back

door from the garage. With winter boots and coats, the small coat closet by the back basement staircase was not cutting it! Upstairs, we were able to gain 2 kids bedrooms, a bathroom, a master bedroom, and a master closet!! The family is very excited for their new home, especially the 3-yr-old who would exclaim, “Did you know I’m getting a bedroom upstairs?!?” at each design meeting. Stopping by this project will give you an idea of what an in-progress job looks like as well as a chance to learn more about how Castle goes about making your project happen from start to finish. It's a great opportunity to ask Alyssa questions you have about planning and executing your remodel.

Design Team
There's a lot to consider when redesigning your home. Meet the team that will help you make all the right choices.
Ashley Hansen
Courtney Walker
Janneke Schaap
Mark Benzell
Emily Blonigen
Alyssa Oleinik
Amy Hinck
Natalie Hanson
Designing and crafting is something that has been engrained into Ashley’s character through the influence of family and friends. The concept of DIY was taught to her early on. From years of practicing this whether it be sewing clothes, sewing her comforter, making art, or upholstering furniture she developed a passion for design. Ashley recognizes that designers are given a great responsibility and opportunity to redefine quality. Interior Design is an outlet in which she is able to share this belief knowing how the layout, selections and aesthetic appearance of a space can truly impact people. Therefor she truly enjoys the opportunity to build relationships with clients and help them form solutions which consider both form and function and best accommodate their lifestyle.
Courtney got her start in interior design well before she had any formal training. As a kid she started out rearranging her room and quickly branched out to her friend’s rooms as well. Following her passions for organization and good design, after finishing high school in her hometown in Iowa, she attended The Art Institutes International Minnesota. She received a Bachelors of Science in Interior Design in 2011 and has been with Castle since. She started out as a Design Intern and quickly worked her way up to doing her own projects. Starting out assisting other designers gave her the opportunity to really learn Castle’s process and observe the different design techniques individual designers at Castle use.
Surrounded by DIY parents and a houseful of brothers in the woods; Janneke grew up with a penchant for the hands-on and the playful, as well as a deepseated respect for nature. At work, she resonates with crafting amazing spaces through creative use of resources and approaches every project with an excitement that shines through the final product. She believes beauty in design is best achieved through high-functioning spaces, and refuses to believe the two concepts are mutually exclusive.
Mark started remodeling homes in 1978 (about the same time he discovered Tab soda) and operated his own design/build firm for 25 years. He has been a long time member of the National Association of the Remodeling Industry and served on the Board of Directors for the Minnesota Chapter of NARI from 19912007.
Emily Blonigen received her Bachelors of Science in Interior Design from the Art Institutes International Minnesota. One thing that she appreciates from her education is the artistic approach Ai takes to the Interior Design profession. Emily is currently studying for her LEED Green Associates Certification. Her main interest in the field is to find opportunities to create sustainable and healthy environments. Design may be achieved through trends, unique styles, colors, and materials- but great design is found through considering the users experience and the continuing future within that environment. With knowledgeable design practices and smart material selections, she is opening the doors of design towards a prosperous and more sustainable future that she is excited to be a part of.
Alyssa graduated in May 2013 with her Bachelor of Science in Architecture from the University of Minnesota- Twin Cities.
Amy Hinck has been around construction her entire life. She spent summers pouring concrete and working on other masonry jobs with her dad in northern Minnesota. She moved to Minneapolis to pursue her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Architecture. She wanted to help bridge the communication gap between trades and designers.
Natalie received her Bachelor of Science in Interior Design in 2012 and has been actively working in the industry ever since. She attended an alternative high school at the Minnesota Zoo called the School of Environmental Studies, where she developed a passion for environmental sciences. Right out of high school, she decided to pursue a career in Meteorology at the University of Oklahoma where she spent two years chasing tornados and attending Sooner football games. While this was exciting, she knew that it was not a lifetime career path for her. She has been interested in art, architecture and interiors since childhood and settled on the field of interior design for her next educational adventure.

She studied abroad in Spring 2012 in Oaxaca, Mexico and came to appreciate the contrast in architectural style when comparing the courtyard buildings there to the high rises in the Twin Cities. Alyssa grew up in a family that enjoys flipping houses, and was drawing floor plans in chalk on her grandmother’s driveway by age five. Alyssa loves skiing, hiking, camping, and anything that will give a rush of adrenaline such as skydiving, white water rafting, and zip lining. She has traveled to Europe and Central America, and foresees plenty of adventure in her future!
Design Manager, AKBD Save A Castle Designer
Amy began working as a drafter immediately after graduating in 2005, and soon became a designer and project manager. During her 9 plus years in the remodeling industry, she has achieved certification as an Associate Kitchen and Bath Designer through the NKBA, as well as a LEED Green Associate through the USGBC.

Educational Feature: Master Suite upgrades and options
Designer Emily Blonigen
Happy empty nesters, called upon Castle for help in remodeling their main floor for a new master suite. Staying true to the original era of the home, clean lines and modern touches were brought in. The new layout incorporates a new luxurious master bath, custom walk-in closet, master bedroom, new windows throughout, and a new front entry. The couple was eager for easy access into all spaces, including their bathroom. Pocket doors and a floor plan that incorporates function and privacy was designed. Bringing the modern flare into the bath was achieved by playing with one of the elements of design, line; 2 stacked floating vanities with custom Dakota surfaces recycled glass countertops, modern Kohler plumbing fixtures, gorgeous tile that runs long with the room, and a custom tile niche wraps two full walls into the shower. Innovative details were selected including a Solatube with integrated light/bath fan, teak flip up/down shower bench, Kohler hydrorail showering column, as well as a schluter linear drain.

Educational Feature: Kitchen Layout Basics
Designer Courtney Walker
What started out as a kitchen remodel in this Northeast Minneapolis home built in 1941, grew into a kitchen, den & bathroom remodel. Starting with the kitchen the homeowners wanted to get rid of the dated tile that covered the walls and part of the ceiling. They also wanted to open up the space as much as possible and add more counter space. By taking out the existing dropped paneled ceiling and removing the partition walls between the kitchen and den we were able to really open it up. We then added a peninsula for additional storage and counter space. While the rest of the Kitchen layout stayed pretty much the same every surface was updated. The kitchen now features wood flooring that tie into the existing wood floors in the home, Bayer Interior Woods custom inset painted cabinetry, Cambria quartz countertops &and gorgeous new pendant lighting that adds a bit of sparkle to the space. The kitchen opened up so much more on the den side the homeowners decided that the wall paneling/brick, old electric fireplace and acoustic tile ceiling had to go.

This late 1940's, Arden Hills ranch was getting very little use from an unfinished, unwelcoming basement with a concrete block wall that divided the basement down the middle and low duct work that made most of the space very uncomfortable to use. Castle Building & Remodeling transformed this basement by creating a large opening in the block wall, connecting the two halves of the basement. The new main open area has been divided into a family room next to a craft and hobby area. A new spacious 3/4 bath and a bright, efficient laundry room add to the overall functionality of the basement, which also includes a music practice room.

Discussions between Recovery Bike Shop and Castle Building & Remodeling, Inc. began through the Northeast Investment Cooperative (NEIC) in early 2013 when the bike shop found a space on Central Avenue. The interior was re-wired with new electrical service and required plumbing updates paving the way for two new, accessible bathrooms with low-flow plumbing fixtures, salvaged cherry doors and restored barn lights over the sinks. Castle’s carpenters built new mechanic’s workbenches wrapped in reclaimed wood, and also transferred and reinstalled a 250lb tin-clad fire door to the other side. The storefront was revitalized with new energy-efficient floor-to-ceiling windows and a brand new custom metal-and-reclaimed-wood awning designed by a Recovery employee and built by local artist Jeff Lohaus of Lohaus Metal Arts. The result is a beautiful, functional space that grew out of collaboration, using unique materials and rooted in the community that showcase Castle’s commitment to preserving the character of the urban fabric. The owners of this 1931 Bungalow were ready for a new kitchen. Limited storage and counter space was an issue, and the dark carpet was not ideal for a kitchen floor. By simply flipping the back entry doorway from the kitchen side of an existing archway to the nook side of the archway, we were able to gain additional cabinet and countertop on either side of the range. We also gained lots of storage by installing floor to ceiling cabinetry on either side of the window in the nook. Galley kitchens can prove challenging for two people to cook in without running into one another. As a solution, we created a space where one person can sit and chop veggies in the nook while the other works at the stove. We chose white cabinets with black granite countertops for a classic look, and then added a fun pop of color and pattern on the floor with 3 colors of Marmoleum!

A rear entry/powder room was added on to the 1st floor of this home. In addition to a major gut to most spaces of this home, we remodeled the kitchen, 2nd floor general bathroom, refinished hardwood floors, repainted the entire house, and replaced all windows. The existing sunroom space is now insulated/heated and part of the master bedroom. This home is in a great neighborhood and was in need of a top to bottom restoration. We saved this castle in the nick of time!

This 1920's home was brimming with character but was in need of a facelift. The footprint remained the same but changing the layout and adding cabinets to the back entry significantly improved the functionality of the space. The kitchen was torn down to the studs and rebuilt while keeping the home's original trim in tact. New EcoFusion natural bamboo flooring went in followed by beautiful Craftsman style natural alder Crystal Cabinets. The Element Surfaces recycled glass counter tops are a custom blend selected by the homeowner to compliment the Mercury Mosaic handmade clay tile backsplash. Every selection made kept the character of the home in mind while also using healthy and environmental friendly materials.

The biggest feat of this whole house remodel was lifting the house and constructing a new foundation. The entire house was gutted and remodeled. There are 3 bedrooms on the top floor along with a full bathroom. The first floor amenities include a rear entry, powder room, beautiful 4 season sunroom, updated kitchen, and traditional living/ dining room. The new basement has a spacious family room and laundry/utility room as well as a bedroom and ¾ bathroom. This is a turn-key home. Being in this central location the future home buyers will be able to spend their time enjoying the events and activities that the twin cities have to offer.

The owners of this home thought ahead when doing previous projects. A few years ago they added on to the rear of the home, in hopes of someday expanding their kitchen. We think other homeowners can learn from them and strive to think ahead and plan to do projects in phases. They even purchased extra tile so that when they did choose to do the kitchen and ½ bath remodel, they had enough to tie into the existing rear entry/mudroom. We didn’t do the addition, but were called upon to rework their kitchen and ½ bath layout. They decided on the option that gave them the biggest island and kitchen space. Some of the unique features in this remodel include locally made tiles used as a detail in the backsplash, a combination gas/griddle/induction cooktop, a reduced length toilet in order to maintain code clearances, and a recessed niche for the TV. These owners were also willing to do some work themselves to save on costs- demolition, acquiring many of the fixtures, and painting.

We turned this formerly un-kept duplex into a charming single family home. There are 5 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms, a formal living room with a gas fireplace, a large family room in the basement that incorporated existing built-ins, and a TV room with a custom entertainment center. The mudroom contains cubbies, pantry storage to compliment the new kitchen, and a key drop/tech hub. A two car detached garage exists. Energy efficiency was improved by adding insulation to the attic, replacing windows, replacing the boiler and hot water maker, and providing energy star appliances. The woodwork and built-ins were salvaged and reused. We also saved and refinished as much hardwood as we could. This was actually the first Save A Castle where the homebuyers were involved in a good portion of the design process and made decisions regarding layout, products and materials. They’ve added a lot of personal touches along the way and can’t wait to move in. Download our free app today!

This St Paul family with 2 young boys was in need of more space. They looked into moving, but just couldn’t find a home they were excited about. They loved their neighborhood and their home of 13 years, so decided a large scale remodel was the best option. Unfortunately, low ceiling heights in the attic and basement prohibited utilizing existing interior space. After weighing pros and cons of different floor plans, tearing off the roof and building a full 2nd story would give the family the space (876 sqft) they needed to grow. We began with reconfiguration of a portion of the main floor. Because the staircase to the attic did not meet code, we decided to relocate it. The staircase took the place of the main floor bathroom. Upstairs we were able to gain 2 kids bedrooms, a bathroom, a master bedroom, and a master closet!!

The owners of this 1919 St. Paul home were looking to makeover their kitchen, with this small kitchen we had to take advantage of every inch. We expanded into the closet behind the kitchen for more space. Adding custom cabinets and recycled glass gave this new kitchen a beautiful touch. Then, we matched the original existing wood floors in the kitchen with the Adura flooring in the entry and added LED lights under the cabinets and in the ceiling lights to brighten up the space. The home owners decided to keep the colors light to make this small space feel more open.

With this whole house remodel, we nearly tripled the amount of usable space by finishing off the basement and adding a dormer/finishing the 2nd floor. The 1st floor kitchen, rear entry, mudroom, and bathroom were remodeled and we also refinished the hardwood floors and painted the remaining rooms. A new 2 car detached garage was recently built. This is now a 5 bedroom, 3 bathroom house with a beautiful master suite. The open floor plan 1st floor and basement finish were designed to be family and entertaining friendly. This home now ranks high for energy efficiency with the new spray foam insulation, furnace and A/C unit, water heater, and windows. Since we touched virtually every space in the home- the homeowners will enjoy the very low maintenance for years to come!

Like most story and ½ homes in the Twin Cities, this Minneapolis kitchen was very cramped and closed off. After a few iterations of conceptual plans, the clients decided to go for the biggest change. In order to achieve the best layout, we removed the wall between the dining room and kitchen, moved the existing window on the side wall down a few feet, and changed out the dining room windows to a set of french doors. The homeowners are completely thrilled with the outcome. They are impressed with the way the hardwood floors were toothed in and refinished and they absolutely love the natural cherry cabinetry, Cambria perimeter countertops, and butcher-block island top. Details that were incorporated in this remodel were the wine rack, dishwasher panel, and bold tile backsplash. As

An unused alcove in the upstairs hallway of this 1917 built home was badly in need of a purpose. A door to a small rug-shaker porch was almost never used and became a small sacrifice to the grander idea of an additional bathroom to serve the three upstairs bedrooms. The space is large enough to accommodate a spacious shower with a built-in bench, transom window, enhanced shower faucet features and an open bright feel thanks to a frameless glass wall and glass shower door. Traditional white subway wall tile and 1” hex floor tiles are accented with Carrera marble details throughout. This is an efficient, but truly ‘classy’ bathroom with the added bonus of a radiate heated floor and polished chrome bathroom accessories. Special attention was given to the details to make this bathroom look and feel like it had always been a part of this home.

This kitchen remodel revolved around refinishing the existing cabinets and adding new elements to make it feel like a brand new space. The first thing to go was the original carpet flooring which has been replaced by a beautiful and durable Marmoleum natural linoleum. The original cabinets were revived with a lot of work and water based non-toxic stain and poly. The cabinets look beautiful with the handcast Element Surfaces recycled glass counter tops featuring pops of red. The color is picked up in the backsplash with the lovingly handmade Mercury Mosaic bubble tiles that pierce through the traditional off-white subway tile made from recycled porcelain. Much of the rest of the house has new natural wool carpeting to complete the eco-friendly update.

Marmoleum is made from natural, readily renewable raw materials. These natural ingredients give the flooring inherent anti-static properties that repel dust, making it easier to maintain a healthier environment for people who suffer from asthma and allergies. Marmoleum is also naturally anti-microbial, inhibiting the growth of many micro-organisms, including the MRSA and CRE strains of bacteria.
