IT'S ALL IN THE FAMILY The History of Castle

Castle Building & Remodeling, Inc. is a professional design/build firm specializing in residential remodeling. Castle is a second-generation family business, started in 1977, with over 2,200 past clients. Marty Schirber started the company from his basement and watched it grow over the years. In 2005 Castle moved into its headquarters on Johnson St NE, and two years later Loren took over the company as a whole. Since then Castle has seen two more locations open, one in St. Paul and the other in South Minneapolis. The unique design studios allow Castle’s interior designers to help clients plan anything from a not so big project all the way up to a whole house reconfiguration. In June of 2012, Camelot Builder and owner Aaron Johnson merged with Castle to create a stronger business. With more overhead, Castle can now better handle more work and bigger projects.

When you hire Castle you will find that our tag line “The Best Value in Professional Remodeling” is our way of life. Our professional team strives to bring a luxury service to the masses. A clearly defined process, direct buying relationships, time tested systems, and efficiency allow Castle to provide a better value and guarantee a better experience. Through our three pronged guarantee we hold ourselves accountable so you do not have to.

There's a lot to consider when redesigning that new space of yours. Meet the team that will help you make all the right choices.

Katie Jaydan

Emily Blonigen

Alyssa Oleinik

Amy Hinck

Katie holds a BS in Interior Design. She has 3 years of commercial property management, construction and renovation experience and has worked in the residential remodeling field since 2003. She also possesses an NCIDQ (National Council for Interior Design Qualification) Certificate and is a professional member of the American Society of Interior Designers. With Castle, Katie has become a member of the NARI Green Remodeling Task Group, designed the first GreenStar Pilot Program Certified Remodel in Minnesota, and was voted as one of the top ecofriendly Interior Designers by Innovative Home Magazine. Katie is also one of 2012's 40 Under 40 recipient.

Emily Blonigen received her Bachelors of Science in Interior Design from the Art Institutes International Minnesota. One thing that she appreciates from her education is the artistic approach Ai takes to the Interior Design profession. Emily is currently studying for her LEED Green Associates Certification. Her main interest in the field is to find opportunities to create sustainable and healthy environments. Design may be achieved through trends, unique styles, colors, and materials- but great design is found through considering the users experience and the continuing future within that environment.

Alyssa received her Bachelor of Science in Architecture from the University of MinnesotaTwin Cities this May. She studied abroad in Spring 2012 in Oaxaca, Mexico and came to appreciate the contrast in architectural style when comparing the courtyard buildings there to the high rises in the Twin Cities. Alyssa grew up in a family that enjoys flipping houses, and was drawing floor plans in chalk on her grandmother’s driveway by age five. Alyssa loves skiing, hiking, camping, and anything that will give a rush of adrenaline such as skydiving, white water rafting, and zip lining. She has traveled to Europe and Central America, and foresees plenty of adventure in her future!

Amy Hinck has been around construction her entire life. She spent many summers pouring concrete and working on other masonry jobs with her dad in northern Minnesota. She moved to Minneapolis to pursue her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Architecture. She wanted to help bridge the communication gap between trades and designers. Amy began working as a drafter immediately after graduating in 2005, and soon became a designer and project manager. During her six plus years in the remodeling industry, she has achieved certification as an Associate Kitchen and Bath Designer through the NKBA, as well as a LEED Green Associate through the USGBC.

Elizabeth holds a BFA in Interior Design from Harrington College of Design in Chicago. She has previous experience working in commercial interiors and high-end residential design, as well as retail sales at a kitchen and bath showroom. She is also a certified AKBD (Associate Kitchen and Bath Designer). Elizabeth is an Allied member of the American Society of Interior Designers. During her undergraduate studies, Elizabeth participated in a study abroad to Greece, where she found her passion for historic architecture and design. Her love of old homes makes her a great fit for Castle's clients, who often have older homes in the city. Elizabeth focuses on helping clients create beautiful spaces that fit seamless with the style of their homes.

Cheri is the newest member of the Castle Design Team. Cheri is an interior designer with more than 20 years of experience. She earned a B.S. with high distinction from the University of Minnesota in interior design and has recently taught design there for eight years. Cheri has offered design services for residential and small commercial design projects that range from design only to large additions and complete remodels. Besides design, her skills include budget planning and implementation, project management, space and lighting plans, drawings, sketching and hand rendering.

Courtney Walker received a Bachelors of Science in Interior Design from the Art Institutes International Minnesota in September 2011. While in school she learned the importance of team work and gained a strong background in design fundamentals. Courtney is a student member of the American Society of Interior Designers. Moving to Minnesota from Iowa in 2009 to attend school, she fell in love with the cities and is now starting her design career with Castle.

Mark started remodeling homes in 1978 (about the same time he discovered Tab soda) and operated his own design/build firm for 25 years. He has been a long time member of the National Association of the Remodeling Industry and served on the Board of Directors for the Minnesota Chapter of NARI from 1991-2007. In 1992, Mark’s company was chosen by Remodeling Magazine as one of their 'Big 50' contractors of the year. As President of the Minnesota Chapter in 1994, Mark was honored with the Industry Leader of the Year Award. Mark also served for seven years on the NARI National Board of Directors. In December of 2007, Mark was named as a founding Director for Minnesota GreenStar and served as the Minnesota GreenStar Treasurer and Operations Manager through the end of 2011.

The first home is in South Minneapolis where we are displaying an in progress kitchen. Designer Amy Hinck is excited to show you at H8 our standard process in planning and executing a kitchen remodel without adding on. The decision was made to remove a wall between the kitchen and dining room - this new open floor plan creates the kitchen desired without going over budget. Another way the homeowners saved money is by doing their own demo, painting and trim install. While the kitchen is still underway you can check out their luxurious gardens, completed by Field Outdoor Spaces.

Save A Castle

Castle starts Save A Castle program to help restore charming homes to be move-in ready After several years of watching national homeownership rates fall Castle decided it was time to try to do something about it. Late in 2012 Castle formed a plan to “Save” 2-3 old homes with character in 2013 and either sell the homes to owner occupied families or help our employees to purchase a home through the Castle Employee Homeownership Assistance Plan. Our mission is to buy, remodel, and return these Castles to their former glory and make them ready for the next 100 years. When Castle first purchased this home, it was in terrible shape. The copper pipes had been stolen, there were major structural issues, the porch ceiling had collapsed, the house had been trashed, but there was still potential. On the main floor, a wall between the dining room and kitchen was removed to create a more open floor plan. The kitchen was completely transformed with new custom cabinetry and updated stainless steel appliances, as well as recycled glass countertops and butcher block countertops. On the second floor, the bathroom was updated and the

18 | Castle Educational Home Tour

www.castlehometour.com

bedrooms were made-over to match the charm of the home. Finally the yard also received a makeover with new sod, bushes, and mulch. While the house originally looked as though it hadn’t been taken care of in years this Castle is now ready for another 100 years. Castle has recently acquired two more homes in its Save A Castle program in St. Paul. If you would like to learn more about either home stop by our first Save A Castle on Selby. When you check in at 1260 Selby Ave be sure to ask for the handouts about both homes. You can set up an appointment at any time to visit either new home for a walk through and learn more about purchasing a Save A Castle home. Realtors and Homebuyers: Come to our first Save A Castle home and learn how you can purchase a home and have Castle remodel it all before you move in!

Educational Feature: What is a Professional Remodeler?

Designer: Amy Hinck

Owners of this Golden Valley home desired a more functional kitchen, reminiscent of the arts and crafts style. Major changes were done including removing a peninsula to create a free standing island, new custom cabinetry, new tiled flooring, and new windows were installed. The refrigerator was relocated to abate the bottle neck/lack of work space with a large pantry next to it for ease with roll outs and adjustable shelves. Great skill was used behind the scenes in dealing with an out of level floor, pipes, the very intricate cabinetry, not to mention HVAC discovered in the soffits that needed to be moved. This Northeast Minneapolis home is no stranger to Castle. With work starting in the basement, Castle has now helped these homeowners remodel on almost every floor. The kitchen was most recently completed in 2010. While the overall layout remained the same, new features include new bench seating, new Adler cabinetry and new Cambria Quartz countertops. This year we completely regutted the main floor bathroom and have plans to complete the 2nd floor bathroom in the near future. The homeowners of this 1945 Minneapolis home love to cook and entertain and were looking to expand their modestly sized kitchen. First, an 18.5’ x 6’ addition over a crawlspace was added to the rear of the home in order to enlarge the kitchen and dining room. We matched the existing vinyl siding, aluminum soffit and fascia, and 30 year architectural shingles. To help create a more open layout, the wall between the existing dining room and kitchen was removed. I SEE FIELDS OF GREEN Castle Building & Remodeling partners with Field Outdoor Spaces to provide their clients with the best urban landscaping in the Twin Cities While many companies shy away from the tight lots and challenging yards in urban spaces, Field Outdoor Spaces has made an art of it. For the last eight years and counting, Field has worked with homeowners in Minneapolis, St. Paul and other neighborhoods around the Twin Cities to maximize their outdoor living areas. Most projects start with a design and the experienced designers, led by owner Jason Rathe, are especially good at listening and making sure that the end product gives you time to enjoy the space rather than just work to keep it up. Field design balances well-thought out living areas with plantings that give a sense of a natural and living environment.

they would approach your space and for most projects try to give a sense of what the budget might be right there. Using the example of a typical 40’ by 30’ backyard – Rathe figures that they can come in take everything out, install a bluestone patio, restore the beds and lawn and plant the backyard with a couple small trees and natural plantings for between $12,000 and $14,000. Field offers thoughtful design, professional crews that build high-quality landscapes with minimal impact on your existing plants, structures and your neighborhood. Field would love to talk to you about your next landscape project.

Field projects are predominantly completed in typical urban front and backyards – spaces that are hard to get into and have layers of history and decay. A typical South Minneapolis or Mac-Groveland backyard is about 40’ wide by 30-40’ long. A project like this will often start with a patio and Field recommends wiping out the entire lawn and planting beds at the same time. This means that lots of compost can be added to all the areas and you can get a great start to your new lawn and beds. Field says that the hot materials for patios are bluestone, clay paver and historic street brick. We also incorporate landscape carpentry like pergolas, trellises and raised planters – the elements really help break up the space and make it feel like an outdoor room. Field prides itself on being up front on pricing. During the free consultation, the Field designer will walk through the scope of the project and listen to what you want to accomplish with your renovation.
