BUSINESS REPORT “Now more than ever, we’re connecting Meadowlands businesses with the critical news and resources they need to stay ahead.”

Forward

The Business Report’s theme to you last issue was ‘Onward’ because after speaking to so many business owners, a better future is too often not clearly in sight. I felt the need to help motivate members to think about how to pivot their businesses and to also let them know they were not alone. This issue’s report is a continuation of Onward, gaining the focus to see a better future by looking through the windshield. Looking Forward, as opposed to looking in the rearview mirror at where we’ve been. The future is what we will make it, despite the roadblocks and challenges of this pandemic. And I hope you will join me in saying there is no giving up. Forward is the only way!

The MC pivots Forward

As we move forward with the MC’s calendar, we have postponed and pushed some events forward – but we continue to advance and strengthen the MC in so many ways. As I write this note to you, the management team is preparing to implement a new virtual event software tool, Blitzr, which allows one-onone networking so members can still build relationships – even virtually. We will advance this platform as we take it through its Beta version in the coming months. Watch for information on the next Blitzr Monthly Networking Meeting which is scheduled to take place on Thursday, November 19. Despite pushing some premier events into the future, our committees and councils will continue to offer virtual programming – offering terrific and timely content at low-cost or no-cost. By the way, we are now posting all of our webinar content online for later viewing so members can take advantage of programs if they didn’t have a chance to attend.

We are also excited to welcome new Board members, who will help shape the future of the MC. Please join us for the important event.

Help us grow our membership

As part of our efforts to reenergize our membership, we will be hosting both an in-person Open House (Nov. 10) and a virtual Open House (Nov. 17). These sessions are aimed at providing prospective members with an opportunity to become part of Team Meadowlands. I am asking all members to help us identify business associates that can benefit from membership with the MC. Please consider helping by sending your lead to Angela Kubisky, Volunteer Leader, at akubisky@meadowlands.org or Alex Gulino, Manager of Member Success, at agulino@meadowlands.org so we can provide personalized invites to these sessions. If someone you refer becomes a member, you receive a referral credit of 10% of the paid membership dues as a Referral Reward.

Maximize your membership

We fully understand that members need to get the most value from their investment of time and money with the MC. On Tuesday, December 1st we will host a morning session talking about how best to maximize your membership. Members of our board along with committee chairs and theMC management team will be on hand to talk about how to use the MC as the great tool that it is. We will host this live at the MCHQ with a limited capacity and all safety protocols in place. Information about these programs can be found at: meadowlands.org Let’s go Forward together, wearing our masks! Respectfully and with great purpose,

Virtual Annual Meeting

On Thursday, November 12th, we will reorganize our Board of Advisors and Trustees of the 2040 Foundation by hosting our premier Annual Meeting virtually. We have two keynote speakers for this event: First will be Fletch Creamer Jr., recently retired CEO of J Fletcher Creamer & Son and current Chairman of the Board for the 2040 Foundation. Fletch will be joined by Bob Garrett, CEO of Hackensack Meridian Health who will talk about how HMH is helping businesses open safely and how the future of healthcare will affect economic development in the years ahead. HMH is also featured on the cover of this issue with a feature story on page 18. 4

LESSONS IN LEADERSHIP

Keys to Engaged Participation in a Virtual Meeting

T

his column has shared tips for leading virtual meetings but the best leaders also must understand how to be an active and engaged participant in virtual meetings, which does not come naturally to most people. COVID-19 has forced many of us to learn a new mode of communicating virtually using a variety of video platforms. Consider the following the next time you are participating in a virtual meeting: • Make sure everyone can hear you. Be sure the microphone is close enough to pick up your voice. Set up your laptop, phone or iPad in a quiet space without a lot of background noise, which can be distracting not only to you, but also to others in the meeting, when it is your time to speak in the meeting. • Stay muted: As soon as you enter a virtual meeting, mute your microphone until it is your time to speak. This will avoid background noise or activities like typing while people are speaking. • Make eye contact: Look into the camera, not at the screen, while you are talking. This is not at all natural, as staring into the little green dot near your computer’s camera feels awkward, but it is essential so that participants feel as if you are looking at them. Conversely, actually looking at participants on your screen while you are talking can cause your eyes to dart around. • Hardwire your computer into the internet: Sure, Zoom will work well via Wi-Fi most of the time, but a hardwire helps to ensure best quality and consistency. And, if your Wi-Fi isn’t working, get creative and hop on your phone using LTE. • Stay centered: Adjust your camera so you are equally centered on screen. Right before you enter the meeting, you have the opportunity to see yourself before everyone else sees you, so use that time to adjust the positioning of your computer so that you are centered and looking straight into the camera, rather than up or down. • Be polite: Hold off on eating and multitasking. Remember, everyone can see you so choose your actions accordingly. Also, if you need to step away, say so. Politely excuse yourself rather than just walking away. • Don’t fidget. Tapping your pencil, playing with your hair, looking anywhere but at the screen can all distract other participants. While you are muted, talking to people in the physical room you are in that are off screen sends the message that you are not truly engaged and in the moment in the virtual meeting. Keep movement to a minimum. 6

meadowlandsmedia.com

November 2020

• Dress to impress: If you are home, it is tempting to simply stay in your pajamas or a sweatshirt, but you should treat the meeting as you would an in-person meeting. • Get involved: If you are the host, it is your job to engage everyone in the meeting. Call participants by name to “force” engagement and to get them involved. If you are a participant, find an opportunity to offer feedback or ask a question. • Be on time: Jump on a few minutes early to ensure the internet connection, video and microphone are working correctly. • Get present. Be present. Stay present: Avoid distractions such as checking your text messages or e-mail. If you have to deal with one of your children or the family dog, just say so and then politely step away. • Finally, get engaged and stay engaged: Force yourself to listen on a deeper level. Remote communication at this level is very different than being face to face in a meeting. It requires a deeper level of concentration. REAL ESTATE

Vermella East

Putting Kearny’s Hudson Pointe on the map with an edgy urban vibe and chic industrial touches

T

he first of more than 40 residents have begun moving into Vermella East, Russo Development’s latest luxury rental apartment community, located in Kearny’s newly-established Hudson Pointe residential and retail district. Vermella East’s location in Hudson Pointe, a walkable neighborhood offering well-known retail and dining options and highlighted by the seven-mile scenic Passaic River Walkway, makes the simple act of coming home truly feel like arriving at a destination. The club room, the nexus of the community’s amenity offerings, sets the tone in what the developer is calling a sophisticated industrial aesthetic, enchanting residents and visitors with a boutique hotel vibe tastefully adorned with elements to respect its history as the site of a former factory. Vermella East is already 20% leased just weeks after the leasing office officially moved on-site, indicating that its opening rental pace could even surpass that of Russo Development’s other two communities in Kearny. Vermella West’s 280 units, also on Passaic Ave., and Vermella Crossing, a 230-unit community with a CVS and Investor’s Bank at Schuyler and Bergen Avenues, have both been consistently at a 98% occupancy rate since opening in 2018 and 2015 respectively. “Our Kearny communities are very appealing to people who might have once considered renting in New York City or Jersey City as here they can get a larger and brand new rental apartment, have more ways to enjoy time spent at the on-site common areas, and access to our expansive outdoor space,” says Adam Pasternack, President of Russo Property Management. “Our strategy to build mid-rise, highly-amenitized buildings in a campus environment long-precedes the COVID-19 quarantine, but is very appealing now 8

meadowlandsmedia.com

November 2020

that people are looking for their rental dollar to go farther while enjoying a less dense work-from-home-friendly environment.” Vermella’s signature amenity package includes a resort-style pool, multi-level fitness center featuring Fitness on Demand and a yoga studio, a game room with billiards and TVs, a clubhouse with ample coworking spaces, and other outdoor amenities including a dog run and spacious lounge areas complete with barbeque grills and firepits. Vermella East looks forward to beginning a robust community events program, which will include yoga classes, cooking demonstrations, and specialty curated events. Vermella East is also located within walking distance of the Kearny Commons retail corridor with Shoprite, BJ’s, Marshalls, LA Fitness, Ulta Beauty, Starbucks, Chipotle and a new urgent care center. Vermella East’s contemporary studio, one and two-bedroom residences feature gourmet kitchens where energy efficient appliances are complemented by custom cabinets, quartz countertops and ceramic tile backsplashes. All have nine-foot ceilings, spacious floorplans, ample storage space, in-home washer-dryers and convenient smart locks with leases starting at mid $1,700’s. “We want everyone who is considering living with us to feel comfortable from the moment they discover us online,” continues Mr. Pasternack. “We’re committed to Kearny long term and creating a neighborhood through our relationships with town leaders as well as our new residents. We are very excited to further develop the Hudson Pointe sub-market and look forward to growing our roots even deeper.” Residents are nearby to both Hudson and Essex County as well as the emerging entertainment and revitalized business districts in

Newark and Harrison. Commutes from Vermella East are especially convenient by car, via major highways including Route 280 and the NJ Turnpike, or the private shuttle service to the Harrison PATH Station, allowing easy access to major cities. Air travelers will also enjoy the convenience of being near Newark Liberty International Airport. 10 Ways Horizon Is Tackling the Cost of Healthcare

A

ffordable healthcare is needed today more than ever. But long before today’s crisis, Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey (BCBSNJ) has been teaming up with doctors and hospitals to work on lowering costs for our members. Here are 10 ways we’ve done it so far. While the pandemic raised the volume, cries for relief from ever-increasing costs have been part of the dialogue about the future of healthcare for decades. To help make sure a COVID-19 diagnosis didn’t translate into extra financial hardship, health insurers like Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey (Horizon BCBSNJ) stepped up to waive out-of-pocket costs for testing and treatment. For those unaffected by the virus, but in need of care for routine health issues, Horizon BCBSNJ eliminated cost-sharing for telemedicine. But, pursuing more affordable healthcare for its members isn’t new for New Jersey’s top health insurer. Horizon BCBSNJ has been at it for more than a decade and we come at it from every angle you can imagine. At the heart of Horizon BCBSNJ’s efforts is patient-focused care that focuses on improving quality as the path to lowering overall costs. By aligning its goals with like-minded doctors and putting patients first, Horizon BCBSNJ is able to help shift New Jersey’s healthcare system toward providing better care at lower costs. This is accomplished in several ways. For one, we make it easier for members to find the right care and access lower-cost options. And second, we help doctors better coordinate whole-person care – mind and body – while enabling them to share in the savings when they reach agreed-upon goals around quality, member experience and cost. Some of these initiatives directly lower costs for members, whiles others work behind the scenes to keep costs across the healthcare system from rising as much as they otherwise could. Together, they help Horizon BCBSNJ be more efficient and Horizon BCBSNJ members get more out of their benefits. Here are 10 ways we’re working with members and our healthcare partners to drive more affordable care in New Jersey. Member-focused efforts 1. No-cost care when it matters most. When the pandemic hit, Horizon BCBSNJ delivered relief to its members in the form of no-cost diagnostic testing, telemedicine visits and treatments connected to COVID-19. What’s more, Horizon BCBSNJ supports members through life’s challenges with many services that require no additional costs – from immunizations for children to customized health coaching, and regular screenings and annual physicals 2. Helping members find affordable care that’s right for them. Choosing the right place to get care can save members time and money. That’s why we educate members whether to have an urgent care or telemedicine visit vs. going to the ER when appropriate. And with our out-of-network cost calculator, members can plan for anticipated costs based on the type of care or procedure they receive

3. Lowering the cost of prescription drugs. Drug costs can add up quickly, especially for brand-name medicines. We help doctors choose effective, lower-cost generic alternatives, providing them with members’ benefits information and out-of-pocket costs. When doctors use this new software, patients could potentially save up to $250 or more with each prescription filled. While generic medicines generally cost far less than brandname medicines, there are exceptions. Horizon BCBSNJ has partnered with a non-profit that plans to work with trusted, FDA-approved drug manufacturers to produce quality medicines that can compete with these high-priced generics. This first-ofits-kind partnership is setting the stage for lower drug prices down the road. 4. Prioritizing mental health and substance use treatment to avoid costly consequences. Overlooking mental health and substance use issues can lead to poor overall health, a potentially dangerous and costly outcome. Over the past few years Horizon BCBSNJ has increased access for mental health and addiction treatment programs, an effort that was expanded and accelerated during the pandemic. Members can now easily connect with licensed therapists online or sign up for innovative medication-assisted treatment for addiction. In one program for members struggling with opioid use disorder, adherence rates beat those of traditional treatment by 60 percent, for one-tenth of the cost. 5. Building healthier communities to stop costly conditions from growing. Housing, affordable healthy food and access to reliable transportation – so-called social determinants of health – can impact a person’s health as much as seeing a doctor. Our Community Health model links members to community resources to overcome these barriers and helps them navigate the healthcare system to get the care they need for preventable or chronic health conditions. Catching and addressing health problems early on helps avoid costly complications later on. 6. Providing plan options with lower premiums. Members don’t have to choose between more organized, personalized and coordinated care and affordable care. With an OMNIASM Health

Plan, members who choose designated doctors and hospitals, while still having access to Horizon BCBSNJ’s large provider network, get the benefit of patient-centered care and lower out-ofpocket costs. Premiums for OMNIA programs are 15 percent less expensive, on average, than comparable plans. Healthcare professional-focused programs 7. Rewarding doctors for better quality to spread savings for all. To increase efficient, quality care, the healthcare system must move away from rewarding more tests and procedures over better health outcomes. Our innovative Episodes of Care program makes this move in a big way. It puts doctors in charge of coordinating all care for a specific medical condition or procedure, giving them responsibility for ensuring patients receive the best quality and most appropriate care possible. If the doctors successfully meet certain quality and cost targets, they share in the savings achieved. 8. Coordinating physical and mental health services for better, more efficient care. We help doctors easily identify patients with undiagnosed mental health or substance use challenges that may be tied to a medical condition – and then connect these patients to qualified, local in-network specialists. Patients get the right care at the right time, and doctors get the support they need to make it happen. 9. Painting a complete picture of patient health to promote cost-effective care. A flurry of doctor visits, diagnoses, prescriptions and lab work can make for a disjointed healthcare experience. We can provide doctors with a 360-degree view of all this information so

they can provide the best care to our members. This transparency helps ensure patients follow their doctors’ care directions, prevents duplicate procedures and tests, and holds doctors accountable for meeting quality standards and delivering cost-effective care. 10. Helping manage complex, costly conditions. People with both physical and mental health conditions make up a higher proportion of healthcare expenses, so it makes sense to treat them holistically. As part of our first-of-its-kind Integrated System of Care pilot program, we partnered with a local behavioral health agency to coordinate all kinds of physical, mental health and substance use care members need to stay healthy. This integrated approach drives down the total costs of care by, for example, reducing ER visits and hospitalizations. Most of the programs are available to all Horizon BCBSNJ members, but check your benefits to determine eligibility. Thomas Vincz is public relations manager at Horizon BCBSNJ. Horizon BCBSNJ, the state’s oldest and largest health insurer is a tax-paying, not-forprofit health service corporation, providing a wide array of medical, dental, vision and prescription insurance products and services. Horizon BCBSNJ is leading the transformation of healthcare in New Jersey by working with doctors and hospitals to deliver innovative, patient-centered programs that reward the quality, not quantity, of care patients receive. Dog’s Playful Antics Lead to Breast Cancer Diagnoses for Woman, Age 37, and Her Sister, Age 38 Amanda Tasca discovered a lump in her breast after her dog jumped on her, prompting her sister Amy to perform a breast self-exam that led to her own cancer diagnosis

A

manda Tasca, age 37, of Vernon is a married hairdresser and the proud owner of two fun, loveable pug dogs. But Amanda never expected that the playful nature of one of her pugs, Daisy, would lead to her breast cancer diagnosis — and prompt her sister Amy Niosi, a 38-year-old high school teacher who lives in Wayne to perform a breast self-examination and discover that she also had breast cancer. An accidental discovery One day, when Amanda was lying in bed, Daisy jumped on Amanda’s chest. “After Daisy jumped on me, it really hurt,” said Amanda. “When I checked my left breast to see if she scratched me, I felt a grape-sized lump.” At first, Amanda didn’t think anything of the lump. She has fibrocystic breast tissue, which can cause breast tissue to feel lumpy or tender. However, she decided to mention her discovery to her OB/GYN a few weeks later during a checkup. “My OB/GYN had a hard time finding the lump at first, but agreed that I should have it checked out,” said Amanda. “Because I was younger than age 40 and didn’t meet the criteria for routine mammograms, I needed a prescription for a mammogram and an ultrasound.” Imaging tests performed at Amanda’s local community hospital confirmed the presence of a 2.5 cm tumor and a biopsy revealed that it was cancerous. Amanda was diagnosed with an early stage invasive ductal carcinoma. “I got the call about my diagnosis the day before Thanksgiving [2019], and that was the only time I cried,” said

Amanda. “After that, I was OK. I figured that because I had no control over the situation and it is what it is, I would do what I had to do to take care of it.” Sharing the news: Amanda shared the news of her diagnosis with her family, including her sister, Amy — a married mom of a six-year-old daughter and a then-one-year-old son. “As soon as I found out that Amanda’s lump was cancerous, I had a sick feeling in my stomach,” said Amy. “I thought, ‘I

have it, too.’” On Thanksgiving Day, Amy tried to push the worrisome thought out of her mind. But that evening, she decided to do a breast self-exam — and sure enough, she felt a hard spot on the top of her right breast. “Because of my sister’s diagnosis, I made an appointment [at my local hospital] right away,” said Amy. “After I had my imaging tests, the radiologist came in and said that she was concerned because it looked like cancer.” Amy later learned that in addition to the tumor in her right breast, the cancer had spread to the lymph nodes under her arm. Starting treatment — together After being diagnosed, Amy and Amanda chose to receive their cancer treatment at John Theurer Cancer Center (JTCC) at Hackensack Meridian Hackensack University Medical Center. “Our mom demanded that we switch to JTCC for our treatment, and we thought it was a good idea,” said Amanda. One of the first steps in developing each sister’s treatment plan was having genetic testing. Genetic testing revealed that both Amy and Amanda — as well as their other sister — were BRCA1 and BRCA2 negative, meaning that they did not carry the most common genes that are associated with an increased risk of breast cancer. Since Amanda’s tumor was relatively small and lymph nodes did not appear to be involved the plan was for surgery first. She was given options of lumpectomy or a double mastectomy. Amanda said. “I decided that the best choice for me was a double mastectomy because I wanted to do everything I could do.” Amanda underwent a successful surgery performed by Marson T. Davidson, MD, on Valentine’s Day 2020. Amanda said she experienced a smooth recovery. “I probably shouldn’t have been doing this, but I was up and vacuuming a few days after surgery,” said Amanda. “My mom kept telling me to relax, but other than some tightness in my chest, I felt fine.” After recovering from her surgery, anti-hormonal therapy in the form of pills (Tamoxifen) was recommended to help decrease the risk of cancer

recurring. Tumor genetic testing revealed that chemotherapy was not likely to be of benefit and hence it was not recommended. “I was so relieved that I didn’t have to have chemotherapy because I am a hairdresser, and I didn’t want to lose my hair,” In March 2020, Amanda and her husband started IVF [in vitro fertilization] to preserve their fertility, giving them the option to grow their family after Amanda’s cancer treatment is complete. The medical oncology and reproductive endocrinology teams worked closely together to coordinate this safely. Care during COVID-19 While Amanda was preparing for surgery, Amy started chemotherapy to shrink her tumor. Because Amy’s tumor was larger than Amanda’s and had spread beyond into the surrounding lymph nodes, Amy needed a different treatment course, a combination of chemotherapy, surgery and radiation. Amy’s chemotherapy regimen lasted from January to April 2020, which coincided with the height of the COVID-19 pandemic in New Jersey. To protect her health, Amy took a leave of absence from her teaching job at Passaic Valley High School. “I got a fever at the beginning of

Dr. Marson T. Davidson, MD

April, so my medical oncologist tested me for COVID-19 right away,” said Amy. “Fortunately, my test was negative.” Like her sister, Amy also underwent a double mastectomy performed by Dr. Davidson. She had surgery in early June, followed by five weeks of post-surgical radiation. She is also receiving antihormonal therapy and is enrolling in a clinical trial looking at a novel therapy to help lower breast cancer recurrence. “Since my sister already had surgery, I had an idea of what to expect,” said Amy. “And just like my sister’s, my recovery went very well.” Reconstruction and survivorship Today, Amanda and Amy are thankful for the circumstances that led to their diagnoses. If not for Daisy — and all the events that followed — the pair agree that they may not have had such favorable outcomes. “The timing of all this happened for a reason,” said Amy. Amanda underwent breast reconstruction surgery performed by Janet Yueh, MD, in July 2020 and is now receiving hormone therapy with the drug tamoxifen to reduce her risk of recurrence. She is back to work as a hairdresser and is enjoying spending time with her husband and her pugs.

Amy is in the process of breast reconstruction with Stephanie Cohen, MD, and is planning to have breast implant surgery in March 2021. She is savoring her time at home with her two children and looking forward to returning to her classroom. Both women hope their story will encourage women — especially those under the age of 40, when routine breast cancer screenings are typically not recommended — to be proactive and advocate for their breast health. “I think the message here is that women have to be aware of changes with their breasts, and if something isn’t right, they need to have it checked out,” said Amanda. “I had recently had a baby and was having regular checkups with my OB/GYN, so I thought I was good,” said Amy. “However, my sister’s diagnosis inspired me to do a selfexam — something I haven’t done since high school — and I learned to be my own advocate.” Throughout their treatment, the sisters encouraged each other and remained optimistic, which they believe was critical to their successful recovery. “I took the view that my diagnosis was not the end-all. I figured, ‘Why get depressed? Why get upset?’” said Amanda. “Breast cancer is hard, but I asked for help when I needed it and was determined to stay positive.” “I never really worried about receiving treatment during COVID-19,” said Amy. “Going in for treatment seemed a little scary at first when everyone started wearing masks, but it was fine. Except for extra safety measures, all the staff acted normal and my treatment continued as scheduled.” However, because chemotherapy can weaken the immune system and increase the chances of infection with viruses in the community, such as COVID-19, Amy’s medical oncologist Deena Mary Atieh Graham, MD, took extra precautions. 20

ProCure Proton Therapy Center announces affiliation with Hackensack Meridian John Theurer Cancer Center

P

roCure Proton Therapy Center recently announced its new clinical affiliation with Hackensack Meridian Health. “It has always been our mission to make proton therapy accessible to as many patients as possible,” said Dr. Brian Chon, medical director at ProCure Proton Therapy Center. “Our new partnership with Hackensack Meridian Health will provide them with the ability to offer the most technologically advanced method of delivering radiation treatments to tumors available today by means of proton therapy,” added Dr. Chon. Unlike conventional radiation therapy, proton therapy delivers particles to the body at lower energy levels, and releases its energy upon impact with the tumor, so there is no “exit” dose. Thus, reducing exposure of radiation to nearby healthy tissues by over 60%. This is an especially important benefit when a tumor is located near critical organs or structures such as the brain, heart or spinal cord. As proton therapy delivers highly targeted energy or pinpoint radiation with less toxicity, higher doses can be delivered to the tumor safely.

ProCure was the first to bring proton therapy to the tri-state region and remains the only center in New Jersey to offer Pencil Beam Scanning (PBS). PBS is the most advanced form of proton therapy, which utilizes an ultranarrow proton beam that deposits a radiation dose more precisely within a tumor. PBS allows physicians to precisely “paint” the tumor with radiation, minimizing radiation exposure to healthy tissue and reducing the risk of side effects. Proton therapy is just as effective as conventional radiation therapy with much less toxicity. Additionally, proton therapy is a treatment option for a wide range of cancers, including: • Childhood cancers • Brain tumors • Head and neck cancers • Breast cancer • Lung cancer • Prostate cancer • Re-irradiation of previously treated cancers • Sarcomas • Pancreatic cancers • Lymphomas • Esophageal cancers

Dr. Brian Chon

“At Hackensack Meridian Health, we’ve long provided a wide range of radiation therapy technologies to meet our patients’ needs. The affiliation with ProCure will give our adult and pediatric patients direct access to every type of radiation therapy now available for people with See ProCure Proton Therapy Center’s ad on the back cover meadowlandsmedia.com
