The disciplined athlete develops strength on the field and in the gym. The experienced architect plans for strength through design principles and building materials. A community of people derives strength from the character of its members and their relationships with one another.

The communities of Aiken Prep, Aiken Day, and Mead Hall have long been known for strength of character and relationships. In the pages of this report, you will see the strength of the school community which is Mead Hall today. You will see evidence of faithful partnerships – many of which are intentional, some are delightful happenstance.

Each one provides testimony that we are stronger together.

LEADERSHIP at Mead Hall takes several forms. As an Episcopal school, we are accountable to the rector and vestry of St. Thaddeus Episcopal Church; we are gratefully indebted to this worshiping community for their support over the last sixty years. The Mead Hall Board of Trustees, representing many of our schools’ constituencies, works to continue strengthening our mission focus while wisely planning for strategic growth.

And I, as the administrative leader hired by the board, dedicate my efforts each day to supporting the school’s faculty, staff, and student body.

STEWARDSHIP – can there be a more important strength for an organization? A nonprofit organization, dependent upon the charitable support of donors, must demonstrate prudent care of all resources entrusted to it. View the “State of the School” report on page three to see Mead Hall’s progress in reaching the financial and enrollment goals established in 2012. These achievements are a result of responsible and committed stewardship throughout the school community.

A strong LEGACY was surely in the minds of our schools’ founders in 1916, 1933, and 1955. What greater gift could they provide for their children than a strong education, a solid foundation on which to build their lives? The fruits of this foresight are readily apparent in our alumni, across the years and around the world.

3 Legacy Schools - One Common Future The Aiken Preparatory School -

Established 1916

Aiken Prep was founded by Louise “Lulie” Hitchcock in 1916 as a boarding school for Winter Colony boys in fourth through eighth grades to teach them to be “junior gentlemen.” One of the original parcels of land assembled for the school came from the Episcopal Church, and, on Sunday mornings, Aiken Prep boarding students would walk to church at St. Thaddeus. Aiken Prep became co-ed in a merger with Aiken Day in 1989 and added a high school in 2000. Heads of School included Frederick Tabor, Harold Fletcher, and Bob Harrington. The history of Aiken Prep is captured in Forever Flourishing: The History of Aiken Preparatory School, by Donald M. Law, 1992.

The Aiken Day School - Established 1933 Aiken Day was founded by Mrs. George Mead, Mrs. Robert McKim, and Mrs. McCullough Miller as a Winter Colony school for their daughters and younger sons. The first tutoring classes were held in an apartment. In 1933 Flora Miller offered the Joye Cottage Squash Court as a home for the school. The first three students were from the Mead, Tower, and von Stade families. After third grade, the boys transferred to Aiken Prep, and the girls continued at Aiken Day. In 1967 Aiken Day moved to the former home of Mrs. George Bostwick, and in 1989 it merged with Aiken Prep. Former heads of school include Miriam Prentice, Margaret Radford, Bob Harrington, and Scott Lacher.

Mead Hall Episcopal School - Established 1955 Mead Hall was named for George Mead, Jr., who graduated from Aiken Prep in 1932 as an honor student, recipient of the Palmetto Award, and captain of multiple sports teams. His name is prominent on the Aiken Prep honor walls. When he was killed in World War II, his father, a trustee of Aiken Prep, gave his Winter Colony home, The Pillars, to St. Thaddeus Episcopal Church to form a parish day school in memory of his son. Mead Hall held classes in The Pillars until 1965 when it moved to its present location at St. Thaddeus. Before the merger with Aiken Prep in 2012, Mead Hall served students in preschool through the eighth grade. Former heads of school include Joseph Harris and James O. Martin.

Parents and community leaders came together in support of outstanding independent education for their children in 1916 with the founding of Aiken Preparatory School, in 1933 with the founding of Aiken Day School, and again in 1955 with the founding of Mead Hall Episcopal School. In 2012, a new group came together in support of the merger between these three legacy schools. The Mead family name and commitment to educational excellence is common to all three schools. George Mead, Sr. was an avid supporter and trustee of Aiken Prep, and his wife was a founder of Aiken Day. They educated their sons at Aiken Prep and their daughters at Aiken Day. Their son George, Jr., who was an honor graduate and star athlete at Aiken Prep, gave his life for our country in World War II. He is the namesake of Mead Hall, which his father co-founded with St. Thaddeus Episcopal Church. We are committed to preserving our legacy schools’ unique histories, historic buildings, and rich traditions and to sharing these with today’s students through our combined alumni association.

The Mead Hall Connection engages and celebrates alumni, faculty, leaders, and friends of Aiken Preparatory School, Aiken Day School, and Mead Hall Episcopal School. Our student body has grown to a record enrollment; our teaching staff is unparalleled; our administration is excellent; our financial performance is remarkable; our most beloved traditions are intact; and, most importantly, the legacy of providing the highest possible educational experience is secure and continuing. We enjoy a rigorous academic program, a broad offering of the Arts, and a comprehensive interscholastic athletics program. All of us, working together and working smart, have made Mead Hall not only a special place to learn but also a special place to grow from boys and girls into responsible young men and women committed to a lifetime of academic excellence, spiritual growth and moral integrity. Education is what Mead Hall does well, and we love doing it.

We continue to make remarkable progress in facilities and finances. We have invested more than $400,000 in a science lab, an art classroom, iPad technology, new recreational facilities, and infrastructure such as HVAC systems, bathrooms, plumbing and roofs. We project a positive operating cash flow. We have reduced mortgage debt by more than $500,000. Our Cornerstone Project continues to add new members who, like us, are committed to providing sufficient funds for any need, be it mortgage payments, “bricks and mortar,” or anything unforeseen. In short, our financial position is strong and improving.

Every day we appreciate even more the rich heritage and traditions that we have in our three legacy schools: Aiken Prep, Aiken Day and Mead Hall. Our combined school, now at a record high enrollment, offers pre-K to 12th on two beautiful campuses in downtown Aiken. We are extremely proud that 100 years ago, in 1916, the founders of the Aiken Preparatory School had the foresight to bring high quality, independent education to the Aiken community. We are honored to continue that great tradition.

As an independent school, we will continue to ask for your support, both financially and verbally. We strive for 100% participation in our Annual Fund and scholarship requests.

We have an ongoing capital campaign and a great 50% matching grant for all mortgage reductions. We have a strong leadership team committed to using our resources wisely and openly.

the School

This report is based on Mead Hall’s strategic objectives, established in 2012 immediately after the merger of Aiken Prep and Mead Hall and the expansion of our school to over 300 students in grades 3K-12 on two campuses. Our success in executing these objectives has been remarkable! We are grateful to our board, administration, faculty, staff, parents, and many supporters for their commitment to positioning our school for continued success.

With the transition to one school accomplished and financial stability achieved, work on planning for the future has begun.

Although space on our two campuses is plentiful, we are currently operating at close-to-capacity enrollment in Preschool, Lower School, and Middle School within our current facility configuration. Growth in the student body also brings demand for expanded academic, athletic, and Arts programs for all students. Look for more detail on our vision for the future during the 100 Years of Education Celebration in 2016.

Mead Hall encourages all students to pursue excellence in all aspects of their lives. Whether in academic, physical, civic, moral, or spiritual educational pursuits, we will continue to listen to and work with parents, students, faculty, and staff to find new and innovative ways to maximize the Mead Hall experience. Under the leadership of our administrators and Dean of Students, a new Honor Code and Code of Conduct have been implemented for the 20152016 school year. Assessing and strengthening our curriculum, integrating technology into all aspects of learning, and preparing students to succeed in the 21st century are at the heart of our commitment to academic excellence.

We are reestablishing relationships with the alumni of our legacy schools, and we are committed to preserving the Aiken Prep, Aiken Day and Mead Hall unique histories, historic buildings and rich traditions. Each year, more alumni tour our campus, reconnect with us online, and attend Alumni Weekend festivities in March. During 2016, we will observe Aiken Preparatory School’s centennial year and celebrate 100 years of education in Aiken. The year-long celebration will include four community events; a very special Alumni Weekend and 100th Anniversary Gala; a display of memorabilia from our legacy schools; and centennial iterations of Gold Bars, Declamation, May Day, Sports Day, and graduation. Alumni, parents, grandparents, board members, teachers, and friends are encouraged to support and advocate for our school by joining the Mead Hall Connection.

College, the Citadel, and Erskine; the Upper School math team placed first in the SCISA Division II Math Meet with three students finishing in the top 10; and a Mead Hall junior was named a National Merit Commended Student.  Mead Hall’s archers placed first in the SCISA State Tournament; the volleyball team advanced several rounds in the State

Tournament; and 14 swimmers qualified for the State Meet in their inaugural season. In addition, a Mead Hall freshman basketball player was named to the girls’ SCISA All-region Team.  The Mead Hall Minstrels, a 3rd and 4th-grade chorus, were repeat gold-medal winners at the SCISA Music Festival.  Student Council leaders developed an Honor Code for Mead Hall and represented their school at the Aiken Chamber of Commerce’s

 Students, teachers, and staff served the community through Mead Hall on a Mission, supported peers abroad through Hearts for

Haiti, and completed individual and group service projects.

Potential. Promise. Possibility. Like students running out of the classroom for recess under the pines on the spacious Aiken Prep Campus, we rejoice in successfully putting the transition from three schools to one behind us and looking with anticipation toward the future. We are confident that our legacy schools’ foundation of excellence in education will be the basis for an even stronger school in years to come.

Our accomplishments this year have been spectacular but less than glamorous. Completing three years of hard work to maintain excellence in education, combine our school communities, and place ourselves on solid financial footing has been our primary focus. The fruits of our labor are most evident in student accomplishment and unprecedented growth in enrollment.

Mead Hall’s enrollment for the 2015-2016 school year has reached an unprecedented 375 students in 3K-12th grade and is projected to continue to increase. Enhanced community awareness of our school has driven this growth, resulting in larger classes entering our Middle and Upper School and continued normal growth in our Kindergarten and Lower School. Your advocacy in the community can expedite our enrollment.

Small changes in facilities speak to the possibilities for our future: a renovated campus common area featuring a volleyball court and green space, heating and air conditioning units that make the radiators on our historic Aiken Prep campus charming reminders of days gone by, a garden to provide produce for our cafeterias and an additional experiential learning venue for students, new flooring in the Lower School cafeteria, and a security system to keep our faculty and students safe. High-speed, dedicated fiber internet infrastructure has been installed to allow students’ iPads, Apple TV, and other educational technology devices to function optimally for our growing student body.

During 2016, we will update our strategic plan and create a master campus plan in preparation for another century of educational excellence. We welcome your input in creating the vision. TOGETHER, we will make it a reality.

For the first few years after the merger, we projected an initial transition period in which operating margins would be negative.

As enrollment increases, as we implement operating efficiencies, and as our annual fundraising efforts grow to more normal levels, we project the annual operating margins to become positive.

Operating results to date are on target, with our 2015-2016 budget very close to breakeven with a positive cash flow.

Mead Hall goes beyond merely academically challenging students. Students are encouraged daily to grow morally and spiritually, excel in athletics and the Arts, and develop the character and skills that will allow them to succeed as adults in their personal and professional lives. As with most independent schools, tuition alone covers only a portion of the cost of operating the school. Mead Hall’s tuition covers about 85 percent; annual gifts fill the remaining 15 percent gap. No matter your gift size, we encourage you to stand with other trustees, parents, grandparents, alumni, parishioners, and friends to show strong support for our educational mission as we work to reach 100% participation in annual giving.  Annual giving impacts every student, every day.

 Financial support at or beyond budgeted levels allows Mead Hall to continue to offer the services that set us apart from other schools.  Exemplary participation in annual giving demonstrates a strong track record of support for our school to major donors and foundations.  Annual gifts are tax-deductible.

Annual Fund gifts make Mead Hall’s extraordinary education possible by allowing us to continue providing small class sizes, interactive classroom technology, expansive arts and athletic programs, leadership opportunities for students, and professional development for our dedicated faculty.

The Mead Hall General Endowment will provide revenue to support the operation of the school. Gifts are invested until the fund reaches a predetermined balance; then, a portion of earnings may be withdrawn each year to supplement the operating budget.

Unlike annual giving, capital campaigns occur only when there is a major event or capital need.

The 10K Club helps fund all aspects of the 2012 merger between Mead Hall and Aiken Preparatory School. 10K participants pledge $2,000 per year for 5 years or contribute a minimum of $10,000 through a single gift. Some donors opt to make multiple 10K gifts.

The Cornerstone Project helps ensure the preservation of the Aiken Prep Campus and tradition of independent education in Aiken. Cornerstone participants have an abiding appreciation for and commitment to independent education in the tradition of Aiken Day School, Aiken Preparatory School, and Mead Hall Episcopal School. They maintain an understanding of Mead Hall’s mission, operations, and plans for the future through bi-annual meetings with the Head of School and Board Chair. They actively advocate for Mead Hall in the community. Finally, they pledge $5,000 per year for 5 years or contribute a minimum of $25,000 through a single gift to support mortgage payments, facility repairs, and modernization and infrastructure.

MAGNIFY THE IMPACT OF YOUR CAPITAL GIFT The Williams Family Foundation of Georgia has graciously extended a challenge grant to Mead Hall. For every $100,000 raised to reduce long-term debt, the foundation will provide a $50,000 matching grant to support capital improvements on the Aiken Prep Campus. In essence, your gift is increased by 50% while the challenge remains active.

The Aiken Prep Campus Restoration and Repair Fund supports improvements on the Aiken Prep Campus.

Likewise, the St. Thaddeus Campus Restoration and Repair Fund supports improvements on the St. Thaddeus Campus.

GIFTS TO MEAD HALL Gifts of Cash. Most gifts to Mead Hall are in the form of cash, check, or credit card. Gifts may be mailed to the advancement office or processed online at meadhallschool.org.

Matching Gifts. Many employers match gifts made by their employees or retirees to educational institutions. The advancement office will gladly work with the personnel department of your employer to arrange a matching gift.

Asset Donations. Some donors prefer to transfer ownership of securities, life insurance policies, or real estate to Mead Hall.

The advancement office will work with your agent to process a matching gift.

Planned Gifts and Bequests. Mead Hall may be named as a benefactor of your estate or of a planned gift. Please contact the advancement office for more information.

Memorials and Honoraria. Any gift may be designated a memorial or honorarium to recognize a special person or event.

Gifts to Mead Hall are tax-deductible as allowed by law.
