FRAGMENTS OF UNIVERSE

I lived in Italy from 1991 until 2012. During my last years there, my home was a few steps away from the river Adda, which flows in a gravel bed from the Alps to Lake Como. A magical place about 15 miles from the centre of Milan, where I had my studio.

Sunbathing on the banks of the river, I admired these small stones with their apparently unreadable patterned messages, which became a cherished memory of a memorable time in my life.

Nature inscribes the history of the Earth on these small geological artefacts, creating veins and colours in a lyrical way that recalls the formation of the universe. Asteroids, planets, time capsules, mute witnesses of time immemorial, lie dormant on the banks of this Italian river, bearing the traces of past worlds.

Pebbles - tiny entities that perhaps dream of being planets - gravitating through my life in curious trajectories, carrying their secrets in eloquent silence, symbols and destiny.

When I returned to Brazil from Italy, I brought a box of these stones with me. Many years later, I photographed them against a backdrop as dark as the cosmos, its stark emptiness reflecting both my past and the past of the times in which these stones were created and shaped by the whims of nature.

FRAGMENTOS DE UNIVERSO

Morei na Italia entre 1991 e 2012, sendo os últimos anos numa casa a poucos passos do rio Adda, que escorre num leito de seixos rolados dos Alpes ao Lago de Como. Um lugar mágico a 25 km do centro de Milão, onde ficava meu estúdio.

Tomando sol às margens do rio observava essas pequenas pedras, cujas mensagens indecifráveis nos seus desenhos tornaram-se memória de um tempo inesquecível da minha vida.

A natureza inscreveu nesses pequenos objetos a história da terra, criando veios e colorações, numa poética que remete à formação do universo. Asteróides, planetas, cápsulas do tempo, mudas testemunhas de tempos imemoriais, adormecem às margens de um rio italiano trazendo consigo as marcas de mundos passados.

Seixos, seres que sonham ser planetas, gravitando minha vida em curiosas trajetórias, carregando seus mistérios em eloquente silêncio, sinais e sina.

Voltando ao Brasil, trouxe uma caixinha com algumas dessas pedras, e muitos anos depois as fotografei, num fundo escuro como o cosmos, cujo vazio reflete em si o meu passado e o passado dos tempos, em que essas pedras foram criadas e desenhadas pelos caprichos da natureza.
