01_INTRODUCTION Research Question Primary teachers are imperative to the fabric of our society; they play a crucial role in the education and social development of our tamariki, who are our future leaders and contributing citizens. Through positive engagement, primary teachers can change for the better the trajectory of many students’ lives. Worrying research suggests that primary teachers feel overworked and undervalued. If this trend continues in the sector, it will become difficult to employ high quality school personnel to deliver the best education and support needed for the well-being of our young tamariki.

The ‘overworked’ part of this issue I cannot personally solve as I am not a policy maker; however, the ‘undervalued’ issue is interesting to investigate and form solutions for.

Through research I found that appreciation is a wonderful tool to motivate and empower people and teams. If I created a campaign to engage the community to show their appreciation for their teachers, highly valuing them, could this in turn get policy makers to seriously review the heavy workload expectations primary teachers are burdened with?

In this report I will show how I utilised my graphic design skills to attract and inform the community on the importance of enhancing primary teachers status and wellbeing through the art of appreciation for the betterment of our tamariki and future generations education.

Target Audience #1 For this project I have two target audiences. The first target audience are the people I want to engage with the campaign showing appreciation to teachers. This group of people are - Parents of primary school aged children.

- Involved in their school community and child’s extra curricular activities.

Why? I have undertaken this research project as many of my closest family members and friends are primary teachers.

I have seen them tirelessly work for the children they teach without the pay, praise and respect that they and their profession deserves.

I have also seen the hard work and dedication primary teachers put in from a parent perspective as two of my three children are of primary school age.

I guess this campaign in a way is a love letter to all the wonderful primary teachers in my life.

02_PROFESSIONAL DOMAIN I have developed a campaign called ‘Primary Teacher Appreciation Week’ or ‘PTAW’ that sounds like an onomatopoeia. Words like Boom! Kapow! We now have PTAW!!

The campaign will feature a website for: sending messages of thanks to a teacher, completing a 5-day challenge to show appreciation to a teacher(s), resources and a place teachers can find discounts exclusively for them.

The website will gain foot traffic and visibility through a targeted marketing strategy which will include an advert, posters and social media.

Field Reviews PINK SHIRT DAY Kōrero Mai, Kōrero Atu, Mauri Tū, Mauri Ora – Speak Up, Stand Together, Stop Bullying! (Pink Shirt Day, n.d) This campaign is insightful. Many schools, workplaces, communities and whānau have got involved (Pink Shirt Day, n.d). It starts a conversation ensuring people feel safe, valued and respected (Pink Shirt Day, n.d). The website shares resources for schools including stories and ideas on how to celebrate this day. Communities have got behind this campaign and I would like the same for Primary Teacher Appreciation Week.

NATIONAL PTA

This UK website is for appreciation for teachers.

Supporting the national teacher day, sharing stories of wonderful teachers, allowing anyone to thank their teacher for free, showing incredible work schools are doing and it is endorsed by celebrities such as Dame Helen Mirren, Pixie Lott and Boris Johnson.

This is an American website. Teacher Appreciation Week is celebrated by thanking teachers, events where teachers’ voices are heard through the governing teaching associations, gift guides, self-care packages and teacher appreciation toolkits.

ELEANOR ROOSEVELT Eleanor Roosevelt, wife of President Franklin D. Roosevelt was an activist and diplomat (School Specialty, 2016). She convinced Congress in 1953 that there needed to be a specific day when teachers were recognised (School Specialty, 2016).

It would take another 27 years for it to be a national day (School Specialty, 2016).

WAINUIOMATA TEACHER APPRECIATION WEEK 2003 A NZ context for a teacher appreciation week This article appeared on a NZ government website in 2003. Education Minister Trevor Mallard was launching Wainuiomata Teacher Appreciation Week. I can not find anything to suggest that this initiative still continues.

NZEI TE RIU ROA - New Zealand’s largest education union Campaign – It’s Time 4 Tamariki - Wāwāhi Tahā This campaign to call for a fairer, better resourced primary education sector began in 2019 and is still continuing today (NZEI Te Riu Roa, 2022).

MAORI PRINCIPLES These three principles play a big part in Māori culture and encapsulate what it means to show appreciation (Daubney, 2020).

Manaakitangi - 1. (noun) hospitality, kindness, generosity, support - the process of showing respect, generosity and care for others (Te Aka Māori Dictionary, n.d).

Kotahitanga - .1 (noun) unity, togetherness, solidarity, collective action (Te Aka Māori Dictionary, n.d).

Whanaungatanga - 1. (noun) relationship, kinship, sense of family connection - a relationship through shared experiences and working together which provides people with a sense of belonging. It develops as a result of kinship rights and obligations, which also serve to strengthen each member of the kin group. It also extends to others to whom one develops a close familial, friendship or reciprocal relationship (Te Aka Māori Dictionary, n.d).

These principles should to be used more widely and weaved into every aspect of our NZ society. I hope to encapsulate them in my project work.

Tall Poppy Syndrome

World Teacher Day is in October and the primary school teachers I interviewed said they had never heard of it or they think they have but have never seen it celebrated.

In America they say thanks often. At Thanksgiving, at Teacher Appreciation Week and other such occasions.

In the UK they have just implemented a national Thanks Day campaign on 4th July.

So why don’t we say thanks in New Zealand more?

Is it because of Tall Poppy Syndrome? Tall Poppy Syndrome is “a perceived tendency to discredit or disparage those who have achieved notable wealth or prominence in public life” (Oxford Languages, n.d).

We pride ourselves on being really humble, but is this to our detriment?

Bodil Jane is an illustrator based in Amsterdam. She is best known for her handmade, warm, aesthetic. I really like her use of bright colour and scatter brushes to create depth in her work.

Concept/Theory Reviews Why are teachers overwhelmed and undervalued?

I combined with research, the interviews I conducted to make sense of what is happening in education from teachers’ perspectives. I found the information very insightful and was able to grasp teachers pain points and what keeps them in the job.

Primary teachers’ well-being is impacted by a variety of factors in their working environment. As Christchurch based Te Kura Kaupapa Māori o Te Whānau Tahi said

“Acute awareness that the wellbeing of our staff keeps the boat afloat. We won’t get anywhere as a whanau or our tamariki can’t be the best that they can be if we don’t have staff that feel valued and feel happy and are equipped to do what they need to do” (Christchurch-based Te

Kura Kaupapa Māori o Te Whānau Tahi, n.d).

This resonates in the research and interviews I conducted.

So what could be some of the things impacting on teacher wellbeing?

Teachers wellbeing and workloads were impacted negatively during this time.

Teachers, in the depths of the pandemic had a different workload to contend with. Implementing online learning, ensuring all students could access this platform and being aware of student and family well-being throughout this time, especially those who were difficult to contact.

Research tells us that the brain when constantly stressed is unable to function well. It needs the opportunity to calm and feel safe. COVID has seen teachers deciding on a daily basis whether or not they can stay in the job.

(Thomas, 2021).

In 2018, a survey was conducted to find out why primary teachers were leaving. 76% said workload/burnout, 81% said work/life balance, and 47% said pay is no longer attractive.(NZEI Te Riu Roa, 2019).

Teachers have to pay to register and this has recently increased from $220.80 every three years to $464.37 (Newshub, 2022). This is a 110% increase. To join the union, teachers’ pay a considerable fee which is why many do not belong.

MIKE ROBBINS Mike Robbins is an expert in the field of appreciation He states:

As a community we should show care and support for teachers (Robbins, 2013).

“Appreciation is one of the most powerful, yet overlooked, aspects of successfully motivating and empowering people and teams.” (Robbins, 2013)

We appreciate how hard you work. We appreciate how you come to work each day and try to do the best you can for our tamariki. We know how much you put into your day (Robbins, 2013).

THE HAAS SCHOOL OF BUSINESS The Haas School of Business did a study which shows that when people are recognised at work they are 23% more effective and productive but when people feel valued and cared about and appreciated for who they are, they are 43% more effective and productive. In addition to this, 66% of employees and interestingly 76% for millennials say they would likely leave their job if they didn’t feel appreciated (Haas School of Business, 2020).

THE GOOGLE ARISTOTLE PROJECT The Google Aristotle Project looked at the metadata on what creates the best conditions for performance in teams (Robbins, 2013). They looked at their organisation and others around the world (Robbins, 2013). After 3 years of investigation, the number one component is ‘psychological safety’ (Robbins, 2013). Essentially this is trust at a group level (Robbins, 2013). It means we know each other, we care about each other, I can be myself, we have each other’s backs, we can make mistakes and have conflict (Robbins, 2013). Those things matter.

Sharing what we appreciate about each other, what we are grateful for, creates more psychological safety (Robbins, 2013).

As a community member and stakeholder in primary education, I see the importance of developing this notion of being a team. We need to create psychological safety for school personnel and the wider school community so that we get to know one another, be ourselves, be comfortable to share and even make mistakes. Sharing what we appreciate about each other creates psychological safety.

03_METHODOLOGY Human Centred Design Human centred design firmly puts the ‘human’ (the teacher) at the centre of the problem solving process (Yell Creative, 2019). To understand them, their wants and needs, constraints, contexts and behaviours (Yell Creative, 2019). This is to build empathy and a design solution catering to the needs they discuss (Yell Creative, 2019).

There are different human centred design frameworks.

I will be adopting the Double Diamond framework (Yell Creative, 2019).

I interviewed 10 teachers. The interviews I conducted further backed my research.

Some takeaways from these were: that all the interviewees loved the kids.

They didn’t like the admin and paperwork and each one felt very undervalued.

Each one had a story to tell about clothes, shoes or food they bought for a child in need, the level of care teachers have for their students is really quite incredible.

They all echoed a similar sentiment to this quote articulated by one interviewee “In my classroom we are like a little whanau. I think and worry about them every day”. (Anonymous, 2022)

Changing Direction I initially proposed a website and an art installation inspired by the works of Michael Murphy. Michael Murphy is an artist based in New York. He is known for his perceptual artworks. After some time I realised that an art installation wouldn’t gain the traction I needed to get the support of the public to back the campaign. After some feedback I also recognised that the two didn’t necessarily make sense together. I then went back to the drawing board and decided to still do a website but thought an advert, posters and a social media campaign made more sense.

To the right was the experiment I did for the installation.

Finding Meaning

During this project we decided to open up a wall in our house. Upon doing this, we found these postcards to the left, put there by a previous owner. It got me thinking about postcards and how they are something you send to someone special. I started to play around with the idea and created the above. This is the format of how the thank you posts will be sent to primary teachers.

Whilst completing this project my daughter would often leave messages of encouragement for me as a surprise in my work books.

It made me so happy and gave me the confidence that the project could be beneficial for primary teachers. A way of showing appreciation for their hard work and dedication to their profession and its importance for the future of Aotearoa.

Colour Palette This is the colour palette chosen. It is vast and bright and works well with my designs. The key colours of pink and red are intentional. As well as being a nice, fun, bright colour combination they are colours of love and appreciation.

Logo Workshop The icons above are of an apple within a heart. The apple is representative of teachers and the heart is showing love and appreciation to teachers. Inside one of the apples are illustrations which embody teachers.

I added text, and after much deliberation I finalised these logos.

I sought feedback from teachers which was all positive.

Typography I established I wanted to use the fonts below. The first is Epicursive Script which almost looks handwritten and ties in well to the aesthetic I want to create. I have paired it with a simple font, Quasimoda.

User Testing To test the campaign ideas I would constantly ask for feedback from the teachers I interviewed. I sought feedback on many things including the style of illustrations, storyline for advert, usability of the website and the resources. They were all very positive about the project and forthcoming with opinions on how I could improve the project each step of the way.

I also asked my two primary school aged children about the website’s look and feel and they were very positive and told me what they would say to their teachers on a postcard if the project did come to life.

Advert For the advert I created a story which was mostly illustrated. I used Ken Burns effect of zooming and panning in on still images to simplify the process.

The story was narrated by my son. The background music is an acoustic instrumental of Six60’s track ‘Don’t Forget Your Roots’ which fits nicely. The guitarist is a gentleman called Nick Scott whom I sort permission from to use his rendition of the kiwi classic.

The story is about a group of students going back to their old school to remember their teachers and how amazing they were. It finishes with an image directing viewers to the website.

I used the Emotional Design Strategy to enhance my story. I have done this through memories, a young voice and the soundtrack.

Social Media Social media is an essential part to the campaign. It is where we can reach a large audience, build the brand and forge a connection with the audience.

The two platforms which will be used are Instagram and Facebook. It is here we can generate excitement through ideas such as a countdown, giveaways and real life stories of how teachers have made an impact.

Website With input sought from teachers I created the website for PTAW. It is free to all participants. Aotearoa has a diverse socioeconomic population and cost barriers had to be eliminated so all students and all communities, the targeted audience, could freely participate.

05_THE FUTURE In future I would like to see this campaign implemented in Aotearoa as I think it’s a really positive initiative for a group of hard-working people who serve our community.

There is a day to appreciate teacher support staff but not one for them, which more than one primary teacher I interviewed noted. They all said they thought this campaign would be a positive thing for the primary education sector not only for teachers but for bringing the community together.

If I had another two semesters, I would have liked to have looked further into the most problematic of issues that teachers consistently brought up which was their load of paperwork. It would be interesting to do a more in-depth analysis of this problem and look at ways perhaps to reduce and simplify this load. I did look briefly into this aspect and found paperwork expectations differed from school to school. It would take time and manpower to solve this issue including government backing.

I think the obvious extension for ‘Primary Teacher Appreciation Week’ would be to remove the word primary and make it ‘Teacher Appreciation Week’ as all teachers work so hard and it would therefore be more inclusive.

I could even stretch further and make it an appreciation week where we give thanks to all workers who serve our communities. Our teachers, nurses, firemen and paramedics are underpaid and undervalued in society.

Most of these workers have had it much tougher in these past few years due to Covid and the impacts of this.

However, making something so broad may not have as great of an impact as intended.
