Since then the programme has changed somewhat having gone from a homespun ‘Method’ to being, probably the most recognized home learning programme of anxiety recovery in the world and now, also, an accredited therapy. It was always Charles and his team’s dream to create residential programmes where people suffering from high anxiety conditions, like Charles once did, could enter, what Charles refers to as ‘an environment for recovery’. Charles endured the gauntlet of medical, psychological and alternative treatments for anxiety, including both private and NHS facilities and he vowed that the facility he would provide “wouldn’t be anything like any of those”. Charles knows how to lead anxiety disorder sufferers to full recovery, as is evident from tens of thousands of testimonials and supporters. It was with this in mind that in 2010 he and ex client Gareth Dore entered six months of research and development and created, what they called, ‘the perfect recovery programme’. The Anxiety Recovery Retreat is that programme. It combines, reassurance, knowledge, support and a perfect environment to bring about such wonderful changes in clients. Ok, maybe it’s not perfect, but we believe that what Charles and his team have created is as near to perfect as can possibly achieved and of that, we are very, very proud. The Anxiety Recovery Retreat isn’t just a holiday in a beautiful stately home, it is that too, but more importantly, it is four days addressing the root cause of your anxiety disorder and total immersion in a structured, ‘common sense’ and simple process that reverses the formation of the disorder.

During the Retreat programme, you will be able to enjoy the comfort and homely atmosphere of the Retreat venue whilst also feeling supported and completely safe. We will be available throughout the Retreat and you can move freely around the venue and interact with us as much or as little as you wish.

Charles wanted to create an environment in which every Retreat visitor would feel nurtured and comfortable in every way so that as little as possible could undermine the core process. He said once that even room temperature and the firmness of a bed can impact on a person’s ability to focus and learn effectively and it is to his credit that in researching the possible venues, that he wouldn’t settle for second best.

You will not be asked any direct questions and you never feel trapped or the centre of attention (unless you want to be) – you do not have to request permission to leave a session and someone is always on hand to assist you. You will never be requested to do anything that would make you feel uncomfortable or and remember, all of The Linden Method team have suffered from anxiety and so they know exactly how you feel. This is your time to take full advantage of our experience and knowledge and Charles has created an opportunity for you to do what he never had the chance of doing when he was anxious, to learn from people who know how to eliminate high anxiety conditions and who have shown many tens of thousands how to do it quickly, with permanent results.

From Rupert Young, Jemma Kidd and Vogue Editor Plum Sykes, to students, pensioners, CEO’s and artists, our Retreat clients are as varied as their experiences with their anxiety disorders but their recovery pathways and the process to reach anxiety recovery are always, absolutely, the same in every case. Anxiety recovery is a science, a science that we have mastered and all we need for you to do now is follow our lead. You will arrive on the Tuesday and be welcomed by our Retreat Host and Linden Method Specialist, Jackie Anderson and Retreat Director, Beth Linden. Buffet lunch will be served at 1pm followed by a brief introduction from Beth Linden. Darren Mason, our Posture & Relaxation Coach, will invite you into his session at 2.30e4.00 pm and then you will be free to settle into your room. All of our team have suffered from anxiety and so we all know how you feel and what you are experiencing. You will not be expected to say or do anything… just to listen. Wednesday morning sees the start of the Linden Method Coaching sessions. Our Linden Method Lead Educator, Life Coach & Psychologist, Jenny Brookes will lead you through the process which you will also start to experience as you progress through the Retreat. Each day will be punctuated by regular breaks, during which drinks, cakes, biscuits, fruits and other snacks will be provided. Each day, lunch is at 1pm and after lunch you will be asked to attend a number of sessions which teach you some of the techniques you can implement to expedite your recovery. Jenny and Beth Linden will conduct a ‘Parents and Partners’ session on the Wednesday afternoon. Your loved ones are encouraged to attend this session as it will assist them to understand your condition more deeply and to help them to support your recovery (as opposed to your anxiety!). Each day is structured to maximize the benefit of your experience and to immerse you in a process which, for some, brings about speedy recovery, sometimes, indeed, before the programme is over. We do not make promises about speed of recovery because every case is different, however, recovery times are directly linked to programme compliance, which is why we provide an environment and a process which goes as far as we possibly can to ensuring compliance. Friday lunch time is when we all come together for the final lunch and when the Retreat host, Jenny, Brookes, Beth, Charles and other Team members are available to talk with you again before you leave. For the Team, the experience is always emotive and for Retreat guests, it is always a revelation after years of suffering,

treatments. Hi Beth, I just wanted to email you having just had my first weekend at home with the family. Words can't really express my deepest thanks and gratitude for what you have done and shown me (and Tim) while at The Retreat. I truly feel my/our life is back on track, and if I’m honest I never would have thought it on Tuesday morning when I had tears in my eyes thinking I can't do this. I have been ‘rebooted’ and feel back on track and focused. I am really looking forward to starting new exciting things and having a fulfilled exciting life. Tim and I took the children for a really fun family bike ride today e which we all enjoyed! We have also had our first family meeting! So everyone has chosen a number of activities that they would like to do either with Tim or I or all together as a family. The Linden team are so so amazing, Beth. (but then of course you know that!) and I understand why you can’t replicate this programme across the world until, as you say, you find away of cloning your fantastic team. All of you are so kind and you just got me. Nothing ever seemed too much trouble and someone was always on hand if I needed it. As the days went on things just clicked and I had a bit of a ‘oh my goodness moment’ (in a fantastic way!) the penny's stared to drop and I felt like I had had such a revelation. I now know what anxiety is and I know I will be free from it very soon, and won’t have to be a prisoner (and my family) to my OCD behaviours. Jenny is amazing e how she explains and talks about everything. Jackie too keeping us on track and always being there if we needed to chat! Hi Beth, It was great to meet you at The Retreat last week. We have arrived back home in Singapore – the journey back with Charlotte was much more pleasureable than the journey to get to you! I found the loved ones’ session extremely helpful and as I mentioned when we spoke it aligns to all the current neuroscience and my own research. I am now able to support Charlotte’s recovery and NOT her anxiety! I am so relieved to have found your programme for Charlotte (and myself) as I know that this will work. After experiencing the affect that anxiety can have on not only the individual but on families and friends I am passionate about creating positive change in this area. People need to know that they do not have to continue to suffer, that there is a positive method that they can utilise to support them to lead a full and purposeful life. Good morning Jo, How are you? It’s been a few months now since I had my stay at The Elms and thought I should drop you an email to see how you’re all doing and let you know how I’m doing. Well I’ve never been better. I have confidence, am completely anxiety free, depression and selfeharm free (have not cut myself since being with you guys) and have completely stopped all of the Quetiapine and Fluoxetine that I was on. Now the withdrawal from Quetiapine has been a little brutal but I kind of did it almost cold turkey which is a reasonable bit faster than what is ever recommended, but I genuinely felt and still feel strong enough to cope with the sideeeffects. They may carry on for a wee while yet but I am strong enough physically and mentally to deal with it. I was due to start STEPPS therapy in April but told them I did not need it and to give my place to someone else. I’ve had one or two small dips but this has been to do with family struggles – it will be the 3rd year anniversary of my brothereinelaws death on Friday so it is a difficult time for everyone. But the way I am dealing with it is entirely different to how I did a year ago. The angle I look at life has totally changed and is infinitely better. Having had anxiety, depression (although I now know this was lowemood caused by the anxiety!) selfeharming and a bit of OCD in varying degrees since I was 11 I did not think there was a way out of it completely. Yes I thought these things could be reduced but not eradicated. How wrong I was! So you could say that my life has completely turned around and I am a different person. I guess I really want to say thank you very much to yourself and the team at TLM for changing my life. I do have a hunger to help people. This is not just in the mental health field but in all aspects of life. It gives me an amazing feeling as if I’m making a difference and fulfilling my purpose in life. I suppose what I’m asking is if there’s anything I can do for TLM in any way? The way that anxiety disorders seem to be perceived and treated by the masses is all wrong in my eyes. Yesterday I went along to what I thought was going to be a ‘talk’ on autism as my son does have a high functioning autism diagnosis – interestingly his ‘anxieties’ have pretty much stopped and his autistic traits have almost gone since I have changed. It makes me feel sad thinking I possibly made him feel that way and that my actions would have had that severe an impact on him. The first 35 minutes were basically listening to two professionals tell us how we must be anxious and its ok to be anxious. All 30 of us in the room were asked to raise our hands if we suffered from anxious thoughts. All but two of us raised our hands. The other woman was asked why she never felt anxious as if it was something alien and abnormal! She replied saying that she felt angry, frustrated etc at times but not anxious. This was treated in almost a joking, dise believing way. Again looking at how I affected my son’s subconscious thoughts it hit hard looking at the other parents in the room and seeing how their anxiety obviously was being showered on to their kids and their kids were really just reflections of them. How exactly are their children meant to be anxiety free if they are not and they do not know how to deal with it or overcome it? The hypocritical statement of ‘Do as I say and not as I do’ seemed appropriate. They basically were feeding anxiety and saying that we must all feel anxious. I did pipe up at one point to say that they were completely mixing emotions and feelings around – saying that nervousness was anxiety??? If that wasn’t enough we were asked to write down everything that made us anxious – I could not write down anything as I do not get anxious. They just could not comprehend that that was even possible. They were advising on managing anxiety not eradicating it further fuelling the notion and theory that we all must be anxious. It was all wrong so I left near the end when I realised the message was not going to change. I wanted to give my contact details to every person there and tell them that what we were being told was not right and that did not have to be the way life is. During the whole thing I felt like standing up and screaming ‘STOP!!!!’ at them. These were professionals in their field nursing and feeding the parents anxiety, and in turn nursing and feeding their children’s anxiety. It really affected me. If I could find a type of soap to wash my brain out of the mornings less than helpful advice I would have gladly sold a kidney for some. Wow sorry I went on a little bit of a rant theree I have a lot more written notes and could go on and on about yesterday but I’ll stop there and will be dropping the notes in my fire pit tonight.
