BLOCK SCHEDULE
Mater Dei High School is on a six day rotating block schedule. On a red day, students will attend blocks 1, 3, 5 and 7. On a gray day, students will attend blocks 2, 4, 6 and 8. Each block will be 75 minutes. The block schedule is helpful for students, as it allows them two days between classes to complete homework or prepare for a test.
OFFICE HOUR
Office hour is once a week at Mater Dei. It is at the end of the day for one hour. This is strictly used for academics. No practice, rehearsal or meeting can happen at this time. Teachers welcome students in for tutoring or will often have a review session before a test. Not every student must stay for office hour, but it is available for all students.
PAPER.CO
Paper.co is an online tutoring service that is available to all of our students. If a student is stuck on a question, needs help studying, needs someone to review an essay or get clarification about something discussed in class. Paper.co has tutors LIVE 24 hours per day, 7 days a week. Paper’s tutors can help you in over 200 topics and four different languages.

Our Values
As Monarchs, the words Honor, Glory and Love are a very intentional set of words. We find a way to honor the people we are with and honor God. We bring glory, not just to ourselves but to God and the greater community. And in everything we do, we do with love. Our colors also correspond with these words.
Honor
Gray, A color associated with wisdom, represents our rich tradition of excellence since 1950. Each generation of Monarchs understands the responsibility of honoring those who came before while lifting those who will come after.
Glory
White represents the spiritual life of Mater Dei High School through prayer, sacraments, and service.
Love
Red represents love, compassion, and the true pride of being a Monarch. Red is the signature color of Mater Dei High School.

Social & Emotional
Mater Dei High School strives to provide its students, families, and faculty members with as much supportive help as possible and is aware that today's stressful lifestyles make that support increasingly necessary. CHOC Psychology
Mater Dei is partnered with CHOC Children’s Psychology. We entered this partnership in Fall of 2020 as we felt that there were many opportunities for increasing wellness activities as well as addressing a range of mental health concerns. Mater Dei and CHOC’s partnership is comprehensive, with the focus on promoting the mental, emotional, and social development of students.
Be Well
The Be Well Mater Dei Curriculum is a Wellness Program that is being integrated and created by Mater Dei High School Catholic Educators and CHOC Licensed Clinicians and Psychologists. Our mission as Catholic school educators, dedicated to holistic education, includes as a key component, the integration of wellness. About Mater Dei’s Mascot –the Monarchs History
The first graduating Class of 1953 selected the Monarch (a lion) as our school’s official mascot along with the colors of red, gray, and white. Over the years, the tradition of the mascot grew to include a male lion named “Monty” and a female lion named “Molly.”
What Does it Mean to be Monarch?
The Monarch is a potent symbol of strength, teamwork, leadership, and confidence. As scholars, artists, athletes, and leaders, we strive to embody these traits while pursuing excellence and representing Christ and our Patroness with Honor, Glory, and Love.
Commonly referred to as the “King of the beasts,” the lion is an emblem of Kingly power and might. The Christ-lion, the Lion of Judah, is a beacon of light, courage, bravery, agility, and dignity. He is a fighter and signifies the line of David, descended from the tribe of Judah. Jesus is our lion who retreats before nothing – not temptation, suffering, sin, or even death. The lioness depicts our Great Mother – Mary, Mater Dei – our Protector, our Patroness.
What’s in a Mane?
The size and coloration of the Monarch’s mane signifies fitness, health, skill, ability, and might. However, not all lions develop manes of equal size or coloration. It takes sturdy genes and a very healthy constitution for a lion to live long enough to grow a substantial mane. The length and darkness of a mane are caused by the lion’s habitat. Lions living in warmer places have lighter and shorter hairs than those in cooler regions. Thus, the mane of the Monarchs represents the enduring legacy of our school and pays homage to our location in Santa Ana, CA, where we proudly stand as the oldest Catholic high school in Orange County.
Tradition Never Graduates
As Monarchs, we know that our bond transcends our high school years: “Once a Monarch, Always a Monarch.” As a community of faith bound by Mary, Mater Dei, we also believe that God is ever with us:
“I command you: be strong and steadfast? Do not fear or be dismayed, for the Lord, your God, is with you wherever you go.” - Joshua 1:9
