Court & West Community Art Centre Court & West is a community art center project located in Jackson, Mississippi, designed to offer comfortable learning space in the hot and humid climate. The design concept is simple and straightforward, a school with an art gallery at the front for students to showcase their work, attracting visitors from the nearby museum directly opposite the plot. The site’s strategic positioning allows residents to enjoy serene views of the creek that gracefully flows into the heart of the project, enhancing the overall experience of this unique community art center. First Floor Plan

The ground floor exudes a breezy and inviting ambience, characterized by three key building blocks that define its layout. These blocks house the gallery space, the restaurant, and the academic office.

The envisioned civic center in Barceloneta seeks to rejuvenate Plaça de Barceloneta, elevating its visual significance while seamlessly integrating it into the urban fabric.

wireframe model

Employing a design experiment, we utilized our prior semester’s concepts to craft an abstract wireframe model, allowing this innovative structure to inform the project’s evolution. Remarkably, the resulting design is inherently distinctive, shaped solely by the designer’s interpretation.

The wireframe model inspired the interior design and structural elements of the building, while the Kultural Drawing informed the layout of streets and landscape features. This fusion of influences ensures that the civic center not only breathes new life into Placa de Barceloneta but also reflects the rich cultural tapestry of Barcelona in its design and functionality.

Now, the wireframe model is scaled up to encompass a sprawling 30,000 square foot area, with a curvilinear envelope draped around it like a blanket.

The novel form crafted through this process subsequently dictates the function and program of the space, diverging from Louis Sullivan’s dictum of “form follows function.”

KALZIP - aluminium panels

To comprehend this intricate mesh, creating a model and experimenting with its functionality is crucial. Once I grasped the primary structure’s mechanics, I delved into experimenting with the envelope. Employing drawing papers, I scored them in a checker pattern to enhance flexibility and conform to the structure’s contours. The resulting dynamic shape was visually striking, serving as a blueprint for detailing my building envelope.

Utilizing the physical model facilitated a comprehensive examination of the structure, aiding in the translation of its intricacies into meticulously detailed drawings, mindful of real-world constraints. The primary structural components comprise 2’x3’ glu-lam structures complemented by 8”x8” CLT girders. For the roof panels, insulated KALZIP panels were chosen, ensuring both structural integrity and thermal efficiency. This iterative process not only honed the design’s functionality but also optimized its constructability, ensuring a seamless transition from conceptualization to realization while prioritizing both performance and aesthetics.

Fata Morgana Greenhouse - Expansion

Fata Morgana, situated in Prague, Czech Republic, served as the focal point for the semester’s first phase. Analyzing the structure of this aged greenhouse building required meticulous research and thorough analysis. Recreating floor plans and other drawings from the 1960s proved both challenging and engrossing. The latter part of the studio focused on expansion, seamlessly integrating new programs while maintaining the essence of the original structure.

The Fata Morgana has a Stigmoid-shaped structure, formed by the intersection of two circles with radii of approximately 70m and 62m. Inside, the botanika is divided into three zones according to botanical collections and climatic needs: Succulent collections, Lowland Rainforest collection, and Highland Mountains collection.

Selected Works | Fata Morgana

The greenhouse building’s semi-dome structure comprises 61 primary steel frameworks and a secondary framework running the length of the botanika. Its facade, covering approximately 2205 sq.m, is clad with 4mm thick polycarbonate sheets for enhanced thermal insulation over traditional double vacuum glass. The steel framework is securely anchored to retaining walls on both sides.

33

Mirnalini Divakar | Architectural Portfolio

The Fata Morgana stands as a self-contained ecosystem, suggesting any expansion should harmonize with the site’s natural contours. Scalability and organic development are paramount to maintaining integrity with the existing structure. Addressing pedestrian flow issues, a new entrance is proposed for linear movement within the building. For the new expansion segment, disconnection from the Botanika was crucial to reduce walking distances. This segment, while distinct, harmonizes with existing collections. Altering the site contour accommodates the new geometry. A proposed landscaped plaza directs visitors’ focus to the new entrance.

1. Existing part of the new Botanika 2. Expansion (Extinct plants and rock collection) 3. Site entry 4. New Botanika entrance 5. Proposed road expansion 6. Service entry 34

The expanded section now encompasses an Entrance Lobby, Extinct Plants and Fossils Collection, and a Classroom. The entrance has been relocated to the center, flanked by the Rock Collection on the left and the Botanika on the right. Each classroom has its own separate access. 35

Water lines for irrigation traverse a narrow basement corridor, supplying water to all three botanical sections. Drain lines run parallel to the supply lines. Water is pumped to an external treatment plant for purification before being recirculated.

Project Type: Hospitality | Professional Work Year: 2017 Office: AB Initio Architects and Planners Location: Hyderabad, India Role: Developing 3D Model |Floor plans | Presentation Softwares Used: SketchUp | Vray | Photoshop

In the ongoing construction of the W Hotel in Hyderabad, the façade underwent a reimagination. The design aimed to highlight the hotel’s logo, balancing elegance with vibrant colors that reflect the city’s rich cultural tapestry. Perforations in the façade were achieved using either Aluminum Composite Panels (ACP) or terracotta, with sleeves incorporated into the profile to accommodate LED strips. This strategic integration of materials not only enhances the aesthetic appeal of the building but also offers a dynamic visual experience, particularly during nighttime when the LED strips illuminate the logo and surrounding elements. The use of ACP or terracotta allows for flexibility in design while ensuring durability and weather resistance. By incorporating the logo into the façade design in such a prominent yet tasteful manner, the W Hotel’s exterior becomes not only a representation of the brand but also a nod to the vibrant and culturally rich atmosphere of Hyderabad.

Mirnalini Divakar | Architectural Portfolio

As part of the design proposal, the lobby space and suite rooms underwent a transformation. Introducing satuario marble flooring with gold metal inlay elevated the ambiance instantly. The incorporation of the jaali element seamlessly extended into the suite room design, ensuring a cohesive and luxurious aesthetic throughout the space. ground floor lobby

When receiving the project, the preliminary floor plan was already in discussion with the client. My task involved design and develop a 3D model with renders. After a couple of iterations, the building design was approved, and I proceeded with preparing working drawings and finalizing other details. The design aimed for simplicity, incorporating RCC slab projections and composite aluminum panels for rafters.
