power coupled with the disease of white supremacy resulted in 2016 election that highlighted gaps in our movement landscape.
ACRE and ACRE Institute have made real progress across our pillars of work. Our commitment to working collaboratively with movement partners to create and deploy corporate and policy campaigns, backed by our intersectional research and analysis, has given us on-the-ground wins and the ability to shape the narrative around progressive, race-conscious economic policies.
effort to reveal and redress the harm that Wall Street greed and political malfeasance have caused over the course of decades. Its partner organization, ACRE Institute, has provided the popular education, targeted research, and incisive analysis that fuel ACRE’s campaigns and help build a collective and sustainable future for all of us living in the United States today. Since launching, “ ” 2022
The idea of ACRE grew out of lessons learned from organizing and campaigning during the Great Recession. We understood that we needed an organization like ACRE to marry sophisticated financial and economic analysis and research with campaigns to build power in Black, Brown, and Indigenous communities. As the US economy hurtles towards another recession, this time manufactured by Federal Reserve Chair Jay Powell, we know that ACRE’s work in 2023 will be more important than 2022 marked a year of transition for the ACRE team. We wished founding co-director Maurice BP-Weeks all the best in his new endeavors after five years of hard work and dedication leading ACRE and ACRE Institute. We knew it’d be hard to fill his shoes, so we are delighted to have Bree Carlson join the team to serve alongside Saqib Bhatti as co-director of ACRE and ACRE Institute. Bree spent the last 10 years at People’s Action, first as the Director of the Structural Racism Program and then as its Deputy Director and Director of Organizing. Under Bree’s leadership, People’s Action undertook the creation of The LongTerm Agenda for New Economy, which inspired a slew of other organizations to develop years-long strategies for winning structural change rather than one-off campaigns. At ACRE, Bree will continue that dedication to comprehensive, structural victories and help lead an organization at the forefront of battles to secure racial and economic justice for our communities. The ACRE team is so grateful for everyone’s support along the way. We hope as you read through our 2022 impact report, you’ll be able to see and feel the difference ACRE has made. Thanks for coming along with us for the ride—we couldn’t do this without you. With gratitude, Christina Livingston Board Chair ACRE Institute Jonathan Westin Board Chair ACRE ACRE IMPACT REPORT 2022 The trajectory we’re on is now clear: the corporate concentration of power and financialization of the economy over the past 50 years has led to a slow but steady decline of worker power and the undoing of much of the social and economic progress of the 20th century. ACRE Institute has been busy. The unique challenges that 2020 has presented — including the spread of COVID-19, the continuing epidemic of police brutality against Black and Brown people, and an unprecedented economic fallout that is harming working-class communities — has required all of us to step up and step into our work with renewed focus and energy. Our focus has dramatically shifted to helping our partners and communities through these crises. It has been a nonstop, whirlwind year and we are excited to take a moment to reflect and share our 2020 Year-In-Review with you.

DETROIT PISTONS The Detroit Pistons community and social responsibility mission is to use the game of basketball as vehicle for change that will inspire and impact the community. The four pillars of focus are education, health and fitness, mentoring, and equality with the flagship program of Basketball for All serving as the primary community initiative. The Detroit Pistons are producing lasting change by investing in Detroit neighborhoods and the people who live there. The team is in the final phase of six-year city courts program in partnership with the City of Detroit that has refurbished 60 basketball courts in parks throughout the city. In partnership with Brilliant Detroit, the club helped purchase and renovate an abandoned home and turn into an early childhood/ family center. The project will ensure that families with young children have what they need to be school ready, healthy, and stable. Last May, Pistons owner Tom Gores, in collaboration with Pistons players and the entire organization announced a $20 million commitment to work with the City of Detroit and provide new community center at Brennan Pool and Rouge Park. The Detroit Pistons Foundation administers grants for charitable purposes in the areas of education and mentoring, health and fitness, and youth leadership and development. The Detroit Pistons Foundation has committed more than 4.3 million in grants to eight Metro Detroit charities with the goal of being stakeholder and contributor to the continued revitalization of Detroit and the region. Hemlock Semiconductor As the nation’s leading producer of hyper-pure polysilicon used in the semiconductor and solar industries, Hemlock Semiconductor (HSC) has been part of the Great Lakes Bay Region community for over 60 years, connecting and energizing the world we share through silicon technology. HSC’s 1,300 employees live, work and raise their families in communities across the region. That’s why every day and every year HSC takes action to improve the quality of life for all its neighbors through its corporate citizenship program and through its employees’ extraordinary commitment to volunteerism. In 2021, HSC employees contributed over 6,800 hours to more than 100 community organizations and initiatives across the region, from serving as volunteer firefighters to planting trees at community parks to distributing food and clothing to those in need. In addition, HSC donates nearly $1 million annually to support projects and programs that make GLBR communities more sustainable, equitable and resilient. By partnering with local organizations and providing grants that enhance community vitality, support public safety and promote STEM education, HSC helps build a sense of pride in both the company and the community. HSC’s Community and Regional Empowerment (CARE) Fund provides up to $30,000 for local projects and programs sponsored by schools, units of government and local groups with 501(c) (3) designation. HSC’s Fire Service Training Sponsorships help area first responders cover the cost of sending enrollees to local fire training academies and acquiring needed training equipment. All of these activities support Hemlock Semiconductor’s vision to be a family-friendly, communityoriented company whose employees and products have a positive effect on the world.

The day of service then expanded to week and continues to occur during the first week of August. In 2022, Community Week included more than 800 Barton Malow volunteers at 107 different volunteer activities in 14 states and two countries. The volunteer time totaled more than 3,500 hours, all on company time. In Michigan, 500 volunteers served in communities from Monroe to Midland and Detroit to Grand Rapids, giving 2,000 hours. The Commission works to leverage and catalyze innovation and the volunteer power of Michiganders to strengthen their communities, grow the ethic of civic engagement, and build stronger Michigan. Fundamentally, the Michigan Community Service Commission views service as strategy for community change. Alongside federal efforts through AmeriCorps, the MCSC and its community partners have engaged tens of thousands of volunteers of all ages, supported hundreds of community-based projects, and leveraged well over $200 million dollars for issues such as disaster response, education, the environment, veteran services, health, housing foreclosure, and many other pressing issues around the state. The Michigan Community Service Commission has four main initiatives it supports to fulfill its mission — Michigan's AmeriCorps, Mentor Michigan+, volunteerism and disaster services.
