Regional Industrial Commercial Gap Analysis Update

As reported in the December edition of Growing Your Business, the M.D. is in the final stages of the Regional Industrial Commercial Gap Analysis. Look for results in the next edition of this newsletter.

This extensive review will help investors take advantage of what the M.D. has to offer while also identifying gaps in investment attraction, labour force, and available land. The study includes a literature review, quantitative and qualitative evaluations, and action-oriented findings. The analysis will culminate in recommendations for the M.D.’s Economic Development team to enhance investment readiness and proactively attract investment to priority sectors.

While still in progress, there have been some initial takeaways identified which indicate the M.D. should refine the business development webpage, investmdbonnyville.com to improve the flow of information, add investor-ready content, as well as industrial/commercial real estate availability. Watch our webpage and feel free to contact the M.D. with any investment property information.

M.D. of Bonnyville Regional Airport Development Economic Impact Assessment and Master Plan

In May 2024, the Alberta Airports Management Association produced a document outlining support for long-term viability for Alberta’s community airports. The report highlights the economic, social, and emergency management value of Alberta’s community airports. It outlines challenges such as infrastructure degradation, financial viability, and regional air service vulnerability. Recommendations include revising funding programs, introducing operating support, and forming a working group to address regional air service issues.

Through a Northern and Regional Economic Development (NRED) grant, the M.D. is developing an investment attraction action plan. It will include identifying the best possible use of the airport and industrial land surrounding the airport, via the Airport Development Economic Impact Assessment, which is currently underway.

The Airport Master Plan is also ongoing. HM Aero, the consultants undertaking the master plan, have engaged with stakeholders, Bonnyville Flying Club, hangar owners and tenants, and the community. This will provide essential information regarding infrastructure and future potential commercial development.

Keep an eye on M.D. social media channels for updates.

Meat Processing Facility Feasibility Study

The M.D. of Bonnyville has been approved for an Alberta Community Partnership grant to undertake a feasibility study for a regional meat processing facility.

Agriculture is an economic driver for the County of St. Paul and M.D. of Bonnyville, positioned second and third, respectively, in poultry and livestock for market value across Northeast Alberta, according to the 2021 Federal Census data.

At present, the region lacks adequate ability to process animals within existing facilities/ businesses. Current operations are at capacity. While many animals are shipped for processing, marketing, and consumption elsewhere within the province, country, and across the globe, there is a demand and need for processing at a local level to encourage and facilitate a local food ecosystem. This includes production, processing, marketing, and consumption. This need has grown with an influx of newcomers calling the region home and wishing to source specialty foods or food prepared for cultural needs.

To support the region’s agricultural growth, this joint study will identify the current state of regional processing, desired state, gaps or barriers, and recommendations.

Once the report has been completed, it will be presented to Council. Keep an eye on this newsletter for updates.
